The best antivirus is not having one at all and knowing how you get infected in the first place. If you don't know what you're downloading and running, don't download it and run it. The only real thing you can't protect against is if someone does a MitM attack or something similar and changes your data stream to download something they're pushing to your system instead of what you tried to download. If you do an ARP spoofing attack, you could poison the routing tables to go phishing. LANs are unsafe, so never hook into someone else's LAN, especially not internet cafes for this reason. Another reason not to hook into an open LAN is because someone might use WireShark to spy on all of your traffic and grab your passwords if you aren't using HTTPS, Tor, or the like. Someone could also create a honeypot open WiFi hotspot in your neighborhood. This could potentially make things even worse if they know who you are and they're after your identity or some such.
If you aren't skilled in the ways of the interwebs defenses, I recommend Comodo Antivirus. It has everything you could ever want in an antivirus and it's completely free. It even comes with a HIPS. (Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System) I don't know of any other antivirus that has this much power. The only drawback is that it isn't open source. Try ClamAV and possibly Snort if you're looking for something open source.

The best anti-virus on a windows machine is a boot image. If a virus is on your machine, you simply load back the original image.
there is so much machines using boot-image programs such as DeepFreetz, but when running anti-virus scan they found a lot of virus, trojans ..

have you ever tried malwarebytes, is really good and can give you a protection in real time, not just the pc also browsing, and can find any virus in a short time. I''ve been using it for a while and in my opinion is good you should try it.
