An observation:

Traverse the flames in this order:

outer top, outer right, outer bottom, outer left
inner left, inner bottom, inner right, inner top

If you number the flames starting at 1, then every even numbered flame's length produces this consistent pattern all around the image:

0 1 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 ....  (short = 0, tall = 1)

The 011 pattern repeats 25 times but only for the lengths.

The odd lengths (the bits between the 011 pattern) seem random and all color bits seem random too.

So the information encoded in the lengths cannot possibly be part of a private key (at least not the even numbered ones).

This suggests to me that the bits of the private key have been interleaved in the inner/outer colors of the flames.  Perhaps the pattern is there to indicate how to rearrange the bits back into order?

Also note that if you take the first 6 lengths of the outer top in this
order:

 2 4 6 1 3 5

You get: 0 1 1 0 1 0

Which is the same pattern we see in the lengths of the 6 ribbons in the image. (2 4 6 5 3 1 would also work)  In fact, the ribbon pattern also has the 0 1 1 pattern for it's even numbered ribbons.

This suggests a length of 6 is significant.

I count 456 bits of information in total (98 inner flames + 54 outer flames each flame carrying 3 bits of information : length, outer color, inner color)

But 456 bits is much more than is needed for a private key.  You need either:

 1) 256 bits for a raw key; or

 2) 296 bits for a wallet import formatted key (uncompressed); or

 3) 304 bits for a wallet import formatted key (compressed)

If we omit the pattern which we know can't be part of the private key, that leaves 380 bits.  However, the color encoding part contains 304 bits which is just enough to encode 38 bytes (the right number for an compressed wallet import formatted key).

My guess is the lengths are there to show how to un-jumble the color bits back into place.

So I'm not sure if a group of us stumbled on to an old puzzle or if we discovered a new one?  Amounts are similar (5 btc vs 4.87).... I think we may have just stumbled into the middle of an old puzzle but not sure. :/

Some clues we found:

Haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere yet. Coin Artist has posted two new paintings with different prizes, and a possible third:
The hidden messages use characters similar to the ones found here:
    https://www.nsa.gov/public_info/_files/cryptologic_spectrum/unsolved_puzzle.pdf
But the image quality is too poor to clearly make them out:

I have run it through a few scripts and cannot get anything useful out of it.  If you break it up into groups of 4 and assign letters to them, I still don't see anything useful.

0101 0101 0011 0000 1111 0000 1101 1010 1011 1111 1111 0001 0000 1111 0111 1110 1011 0000 1101

I I N E F E V V T F F S E F A R T E D  <--- This is the best one I got.

There has got to be something hidden in the odd flame heights.  It wouldn't make sense to use the colors because you need those for the private key.

I converted the 0's and 1's to morse code and tried that as well.

[UPDATE 4/3/2015]

@Coin_artist has finally released the last part of the puzzle to the public via twitter.

https://twitter.com/coin_artist/status/583979278238359552

There is 4.87 BTC contained within the image shown below via private key.  Follow through this thread to help navigate yourself through the start to finish of this elaborate puzzle! There are a lot of cool crypto techniques used during this journey...

------------------------

I was just catching up on Coin_Artist's puzzle and came across a cryptic message with a link in the comments, the comment is 10 days old. Doesn't appear to be from Coin_Artist, the message is a bit puzzling.

http://bitcoinmagazine.com/14850/coin_artists-latest-dark-wallet-puzzle-32-page-solution/

Screenshot of the comment incase it gets deleted for some reason...

Who is WR?

Im sorry for the possible inconvenient post, but I found this puzzle very intriguing and would like to join. But I would like to know first who guarantees that this prize is going to be handled to the winner?

This is an old puzzle that is still ongoing. Many have tried and many have failed.
The answer to the puzzle is the private key to the address that contains the bitcoin prize.

This is the address in question: 1FLAMEN6rq2BqMnkUmsJBqCGWdwgVKcegd

If you are successful, you yourself will take your prize.

Good luck.  Cool

I translated the Morse code and have got RKRWSWGSGGKWOOGUSWGOORGSGT

Which has lead me to http://c0d3.attorney/0.1?m=140

Think there's a link here. This is to do with the red ribbons and the butterfly lock. There's a key in one of these programs.

Yeah I've tried all those the actual programs listed need decoding before they will run. Invalid characters etc.
Interesting that there's also a book about chess and the circles of hell training. The more I look at the moves in chess the closer a key looks likely to be generated from certain moves.

seems bizzare website though what the hell is hidden in that code Huh
Think this Malbolgne lead isnt the key and a dead end.

Yes the date rules it out.

have generated new binary code and morse code using the key colour ribbons as reference.
Count the red flames only as 1 and any others as zero.

I got this on the inner...
1110101111111010001110001110101000011110001110111010000000110100111011010010101 0000011001011110

converted this to morse 1=dash 0=dot above binary equals ---.-.-------.-...---...---.-.-....----...---.---.-.......--.-..---.--.-..-.-.-.....--..-.----.

Translate to text using three morse code inputs and I got
OROOKSOSORDUOSOWKSSWRWKKURDSGROD

maybe something maybe nothing Huh

Hi all.

Been following this alongside hammers400 and may have found a few things and crossed some stuff off the list as no good.

The key having ribbons short-long-long-short-long-short has prompted me to start there. As perhaps this is the key to deciphering the code.

So far with the 011010 I've tried getting the Hex color code for that R1, G16, B16. But couldn't find a single pixel in the image that had that color.
011010 is also 26 in binary to decimal, which could mean in the short-long patterns we're looking for letters of the alphabet.
Coin_artist's friend, Tyler, mentioned the original players gained access to a high-definition version of the image. Can any of these original players confirm whether or not the twitter image coin_artist shared is good enough to follow, or is there a higher-res image that makes things easier to work with?

Additional findings, or major coincidences:

Counted the flames in total = 152
The inner flames = 98.
152 in decimal is 98 in Hexadecimal, so thinking we have to use Hex in here somewhere for sure.

There are 63 squares on this alternatives style chessboard, and 63 long inner flames. Does anyone see anything we can do with that?

coin_artist has confirmed The Pheonix and the Turtle helped to inspire the piece,
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45085/the-phoenix-and-the-turtle-56d2246f86c06

So we've started looking to that for clues based on the poem. On the Dove's wing we can read what appears to be "FO" (square A6), and on the Phoenix neck there appears to be an "Ld" (Square C6/C5). Combining these we get "FOLd". We're wondering if this could mean anything to anyone? Like do we need to fold the image over on itself etc. Or are we just finding coincidences in random brushstrokes.

Hoping these ideas can get some people thinking.
I have limited coding knowledge, but very keen to help solve this. Smiley

wow... quite impressive thread.

I made a steemit post about it and will be following now and then
but solving it with all the code and programming is probably beyond my capability

you can check the post here:
