27th January 2013 weekly pool and network statistics

Welcome, miners.

Not many surprises this week, so I added a new chart.

Figure 1 is a pie chart of the percentage of network blocks hashrate by pool. "Unknown" combines those pools for which I can't scrape statistics, solominers and private pools. The percentage of network hashrate will only be approximate since the exact network hashrate is unknown.

As usual, please post comments if there's anything you don't understand or if there's something think is wrong or just disagree with.

3rd February 2013 weekly pool and network statistics

Welcome, miners.

A few things happened this week that are worthy of note. First, the large spike in the 144 block average network hashrate. Although there is some uncertainty due to the estimated nature of the network hashrate, this peak started around January 31st,  peaked February 2nd, and was back to around 22000 Ghps by today. Anyone hazard as guess as to the reason for it? Or was it just a peak in luck?

Slush's pool saw a major influx of hashes - since the start of the week about 600 Ghps has been added. Most other pools have lost a proportion of the network hashrate, and the "unknown" portion of the pie has increased since last week - solominers, dark pools, or just a lucky week for the network? It's hard to tell, but at the moment I'm working on a method of determining an estimate for the network hashrate which seems to be a bit easier to interpret and possibly more accurate than current methods, although more computationally expensive.

Since the first Avalon units arrived this week, I'd say many more surprises are in store for us next week. Stay tuned.

As usual, please post comments if there's anything you don't understand or if there's something think is wrong or just disagree with.

10th February 2013 weekly pool and network statistics

Welcome, miners.

The network hashrate continues to increase, as does the unknown proportion of the network. Keep in mind that the pie charts are based on data published by the pools, so very few known pools are included in "unknown" - approximately 1000 Ghps at most. That means ~ 3000 Ghps are completely unknown, and are now the largest source of hashing in the network. I'd be interested to find out who they might be. Perhaps some Chinese pools of which I haven't yet heard? Or is ASICMiner already hashing away?

The increasing in hashrate provided by Jeff Garzik's Avalon miner on p2Pool is obvious in chart 4, while not so clear on Slush's pool - which is still being consistenly pool hopped. DeepBit doesn't seem to be pool hopped at all.

I forgot to welcome btc.p2pcoins, who were included in the stats for the first time last week. This week we see the return of Coinotron, who have seen some massive and quite interesting swings in hashrate over the last few weeks.

As usual, please post comments if there's anything you don't understand, with which you disagree, or just think is wrong.

Nah, at 7.5 Thps even if you have really crap luck you'll be above 5 Thps on the charts. In this context, "really crap" means a one in one billion level of crap luck for the week.

17th February 2013 weekly pool and network statistics

Welcome, miners.

Two interesting happenings this week:

There are as yet no confirmed reports of Avalon ASIC hashers apart from the two known ones.

In other news, Ozcoin is back in the top five and look set to overtake Deepbit if current trends continue, both slush's pool and DeepBit continue to be pool hopped,  and Coinotron's webpage was down today.

As usual, please post comments if there's anything you don't understand, with which you disagree, or just think is wrong.

organofcorti,
I usually monitor the Network hash rate by using Bitcoin Watch.  They have a link on their page which leads to Bitcoin Charts.  These two sites have very different hash rate estimates and I had thought that they both got their estimates from the same place/method.

Bitcoin Charts says 34.683 Thash/s
Bitcoin Watch says 27.46

At this moment.

I was wondering which one was the most accurate, in your opinion, and/or if there were another estimate somewhere that may be a better source of Network hash rate?
Thanks,
Sam

Good question , Sam. I would use the "7 day window" line on the graphs at http://bitcoin.sipa.be (Pieter Wuille's site) - it's a far more useful estimation than those I've seen elsewhere, and it's how I judged the usefulness of the estimations I produce for myself (and which I might share one day if I can get around to figuring out how to autoupload my estimations to a website).

Based on the chart below (at the time I looked) the 7 day window estimate is ~ 30 000 Ghps. Because of the method Pieter uses, this is IMO a good estimate of the actual current hashrate of the network.
