Another 10 Thps increase in the average weekly network hashrate this week. I fear my batch#2 Avalon  may come too late to pay for itself in BTC - the "View Order" page is still empty.

Thank you to all who completed the survey (mentioned last week and introduced in this post). I've had 135 responses so far, which is fantastic, and I'll leave it up for a while yet. Thanks also go to DrHaribo of BitMinter who posted links to it in various social media.

BTCGuild is now down to 23% of network blocks, and 50BTC.com and ASICMiner up to 20% of network blocks. Nice healthy competition between 50BTC.com and BTCGuild. As for ASICMiner, where will the meteoric rise in hashrate end?

The network hashrate is increasing, with 1157 blocks solved in the past week. The network does not appear to be slowing any time soon.

BTCGuild still has the highest hashrate of all recorded pools, but due to some bad luck this week solved fewer blocks than ASICMiner - now the second highest hashrate entity. Either way, 50BTC.com has dropped to third highest hashrate.

HHTT got another big hashrate boost this week - the top hasher there has 700Ghps. It seems to be mainly an ASIC pool.

Pool hopping:
The might have been some pool hopping at Deepbit earlier in the week. It might just be coincidence though.

The network solved 1092 blocks solved in the past week - 60 less than last week. I don't think this indicates any significant slowing of the network hashrate though.

Eclipse had a large hashrate boost this week. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a user hashrate API for this pool, but I'm guessing that a large number of high hashrate ASICs joined up. Polmine has an interesting change to their user hashrate distribution. In figure 8 there is a large bugle forming around the 10 Ghps area - perhaps a number of single blades added?

Figure 4 shows Bitminter, Eligius, Itzod and Slush all saw constant gains in hashrate during the week; Deepbit's hashrate gradually declined.

Is ASICMiner renting hashes to DiscusFish?
This week I noticed something quite odd. If you scroll down to Figure 3 and compare the two yellow lines, you'll notice they look quite similar. The lines are for ASICMiner and DiscusFish. Here's a second chart comparing their block solved per week:

The relationship between the two is really quite suggestive. Taking variance into account, it does seem that DiscusFish and ASICMiner solo started signing the coinbase at about the same time and have been increasing their hashrates by about the same percentage rate.

I had a quick google but couldn't find any posts that described a working relationship between the two. So, can anyone tell me if it there is a known relationship between ASICMiner and DiscusFish? Has ASICMiner been renting hashes to DiscusFish and if so is it being paid to investors?

Polmine's ASICs are mostly blades, and HHTT user's are mostly ASICs.
In Figure 8, most pools show a bulge around the 65 Ghps mark - lots of single Avalons. Two pools are unusual in that they don't: Polmine has had a bulge around 10 Ghps for the last few weeks, which might indicate a large number of ASICMiner blades. HHTT shows little variation overall, showing a very high percentage of ASIC hashes.

This week I want to point out Slush's pool's consistency in terms of proportion of the network. It has been at around 10% of the network hashrate for well over a year now - consistency unmatched by any other pool. Well done Slush!

Silent achievers Ozcoin, Eligius and EclipseMC have both been increasing their share of the network consistently for the past couple of months, and BTCGuild's share of the network is once again on the rise. Oh no, the sky is falling! etc.

There are lots of new ASIC miners around, and if you're not tied to any particular pool already I have a suggestion. Look at chart 8, which show the user hashrate distribution for each pool. Look for pools with the largest density of user accounts above 50 to 100 Ghps - those will be the pools that have happy ASIC owners and few GPU owners. If they are small pools, why not give them a try? Ozcoin and HHTT are the pools with the largest number of ASIC users at the moment.

Also, congrats to p2Pool - really picking up steam. The ASIC problems there must have been solved.

Finally, anyone else noticed that the network hashrate has increased exponentially (linearly on the exponential scale) since February this year. Why could that possibly be, Avalon? Anyone game to guess when the increase will revert to linear?

    Blockexplorer.com hasn't updated since block height 250458. Since I use Blockexplorer.com for the network's hashrate every 144 blocks, that statistic is incomplete this week. The weekly average hashrate, blocks solved and so on I calculate using my own data so that is unaffected.

    There's a new coinbase signature I noticed:  "bghash.io". Does anyone know if this is a pool's name or just the name of the pool's software? The following blocks were solved by this entity:

        250205 250226 250329 250354 250393 250433 250486

and the generated coin was paid to this address:

        1CjPR7Z5ZSyWk6WtXvSFgkptmpoi4UM9BC

which has been actively solving blocks since the 6th July.

Pool hopping:

    Nil.

1. Unknown hashing sources at 1.9% of network

Blocks solved by unknown  sources are now down to 1.9% - that's only 25 blocks out of a total of 1323 for this week. That total is 31.25% more than it should be, so I don't see the skyrocketing network hashrate start slowing down anytime soon - especially with all the new sources of hashes recently available.

2. Gigavps' Semi-private pool

I added Gigavps' Semi-private pool this week, starting on the charts with a massive 7% of the network. Interestingly, Figure 8 shows the pool has a much higher minimum hashrate than for other pools. Specifically, the minimum hashrate is ~7Ghps, and the top four user accounts have between 1.2 and 7.8 Thps. This is an all-ASIC pool (or at least very close to it). I think most pools hashrate distributions will look similar to that in the future.

3. Lest we forget

Also this week we say farewell to Coinotron's BTC pool and MaxBTC, both in a planned closure. Coinotron seems to want to focus on alt-coins, and MaxBTC's pool op will concentrate on Kraken.com, a very nice trading platform - give it a try, if you trade. ABCPool.com  has also closed but being a proxy pool they were not included in the weekly statistics.

Bitcoinpool.com is still offline with a 404 error from an nginx server somewhere. They haven't solved a block since May, so I think they won't be back.

In honour of the pools that have gone to the God of the Blocks' happy hashing grounds, I've produced a chart of the percentage of hashrates of all the dead pools for which I have records, in order of the last week in which they solved a block.

I'll update the chart when the next sad occasion arises - which I think will be when BTCDig.com arises phoenix-like from the ashes of btcmine.com, or perhaps it will be Bitclockers.com, which have had payment and website issues recently and today were down to a total pool hashrate of 1 Ghps.

So, with sadness and nostalgia I present the Dead Pools.

Please take some time to think about the pool operators who ran these pools, loved them as if they were their own children, and did their part to help secure the network. Also, don't forget about the many other pools that didn't make it -  Arsbitcoin and Continuum pool (the first pool to use the Geometric method of reward distribution, the progenitor of DGM) come to mind, but there have been many others, especially those that were unable to change from a proportional reward method.

1. bghash.io
The entity signing "bghash.io" in the coinbase has stopped adding that signature since last week. They still seem to mining, as their payout address shows:

The current blocks belonging to them no longer hasve coinbases signed with an obvious unique identifier.
2. 1320 blocks solved by the network this week.
No sign of the network hashrate slowing any time soon. Even with some reduction in the increase of additional hashing sources, the network could be at 500 Thps by next week -  and at that rate, 1 Phps in 4 to 6 weeks.

3. BTCGuild luck
BTCGuild had enormous luck this week, with a CDF of 0.02. This is about a once in a year event, so I hope the BTCGuild miners enjoyed it.

1. Deepbit is at 0.29% of the network
Only a year ago Deepbit was one of the top hashrate pools with 20% of the network. 18 months ago it was at 30% of the network. Now it is one hundredth the size at 0.29% of the network. The are many reasons for this drop, but I think the main thing for pool operators to keep in mind is to constantly innovate, keep ahead of the competition, and only use a non-exploitable reward method.


2. bghash.io
I turns out that the entity that had been signing "bghash.io" in the coinbase and paying out to 1CjPR7Z5ZSyWk6WtXvSFgkptmpoi4UM9BC is none other than bitfury's private pool, GHash.io. Bitfury is a manufacturer of ASIC mining devices, and if this pool is his test bed it's been running at 83 Thps for the last day or so (according to his website). I'll be contacting Bitfury to see if he'll give me access to any data for the weekly pool stats. The recent increase in the number of unknown blocks solved is mainly attributable to this pool - it has around 18% of the network at the moment.

3. 1360 blocks solved by the network this week.
Up from 1320 last week - the network's hashrate continues to rise exponentially without break, as it has for the last month (see the log-linear chart, figure 2). This is not a good time to have invested in mining hardware.

Last week I estimated we see an average network hashrate of 500 Thps this week. At 490 Thps, we're almost there.


4. BTCGuild luck
BTCGuild had enormous luck yet again this week, with a CDF of 0.00. I have to derive the data in an unusual way for BTCGuild, so I'm a bit concerned that this luck may be incorrect. Indeed, if you look at Figure 5 for BTCGuild, you'll see that recently the CDF's have been grouped at very high or very low values. If I find some time I'll try to figure out why.


5. The Google "+ 1" button
The best form of feedback I get about the posts I make is from the "+ 1" button clicks at the bottom of each post. The more "+ 1" a post gets the more likely I am to post something about that in future - not much point taking the time to publish something no one finds useful or interesting. 1. BTCGuild luck
So there was a problem in the way I'd been calculating BTCGuild luck since around March. I fixed the error I found and the result for this week is much more normal.

2. The Google "+ 1" button
Thanks to everyone who "Plus 1"'d the post. I hope I'll be able to use the "plus 1"s to judge which posts get traction (and are the sort of thing you find interesting) and which are not. Otherwise I just end up posting thing which I find interesting - and not everyone shares my taste in "interesting"!

Not very hidden.  Most of that speed is ghash.io, BitFury's solo mining operation.  http://blockorigin.pfoe.be shows the actual unknown part of the network is still extremely small (~3%).

However bitfury has granted me access to ghash.io's pool stats and "unknown" should return to it's previous low levels.
