It is probably cause you need to download all the transactions in the bitcoin-qt (assuming your using it), before yours will get confirmed.

8 connections isn't a lot i am assuming your using bitcoin-qt since what you described. There are websites where you can download the transaction history and just pop it into bitcoin-qt so look into that, but if you keep open frequently it will not be that bad after the first time.

8 connections (3 bars) is normal if your firewall doesn't allow incoming Bitcoin connections, but you don't need incoming connections to download the blockchain or send or receive transactions, so this isn't the problem. The spinning icon indicates that Bitcoin is still downloading the blockchain (or trying to), it will change to a green tick when the blockchain is fully downloaded and up to date. What block is it up to now? As long as it's not stuck on one particular block then there should be no problem, you just need to give it more time.

You need to pay a miner fee. If you have more than four outputs you should pay 0.001 BTC.

This is thanks to satoshidice, before I had no big problems sending no fee transactions, now even if I pay I often have to wait.

Today is happening to me for the first time after 1 year I am sending BTC with no fee when not requested.
I sent 5 BTC to my GLBSE account 12 hours ago and it is still at 0 confirmations.
I wonder when (and at this point: if) they will reach their destination.
So what is the minimum fee to get a sure and relatively fast tx? 0.005?

Perhaps it's because there are way too many transactions waiting to be confirmed on the network?  Huh

I just checked http://bitcoincharts.com/bitcoin/txlist/, there are 1580 unconfirmed transactions (749099 bytes), which is the highest I've seen.

Probably your block database is getting corrupted for some reason. Maybe due to an antivirus or a bad disk.

wow, i'm used to it being 300-400... they might have to start paginating results!

also for some reason, the thread title reminds me of:

there are online sites that you can download the transaction history thru http and just put it where your bitcoin-qt can get at it

ok if you do that then you would still need to download all transactions, the reason for this, is cause it needs to see if that address has any coins or balance or what is the history of the address and the only way to do that is to look thru all transactions. There is really no way of getting around it that isn't secure.
