no one is talking about wiping CPU mining... they are talking about removing the 'generate' option from the GUI of bitcoin.exe.. but it would still be there as a commandline option.
But if you are generating 1.7Ghash through bitcoin.exe... holy shitshingle XD you could increase that to 5Ghash easily by using another CPU miner.

There is separate mining software... it can and should be removed from the wallet software. Also, I don't believe you unless you have a cluster. Even my phenom II can only pull out 12 MH/s.

Which company is paying your electricity costs? Or school? Sounds like a sysadmin decided to try running bitcoin until his bosses notice.

I'll give you an alternative answer as to what happened: 4chan.
Bitcoins got mentioned on 4chan, specifically on /b/, and on some threads with a lot of viewers.

Hi, after reading that reddit post I started mining yesterday with my HD5850 OCed to 850/300 mhz @ 314Mhash/s and received my first 0.56 Bitcoins this morning (BTCmine).

I guess we're all a lot alike, I too just read about BitCoin on Reddit this morning at 11:30 AM, spent 2 hours reading about it (and watched that youtube video by that startups show guy), and then spent my entire day off trying to make some coin I started at 7500 khash/s with the 4way CPU miner, and now it's turned into an obsession! It's now after 2:00 AM and I have: 15400 khash/s (bitcoin-miner.exe produces double the output of rpcminer-4way.exe) on my Core-i5 Nehalem 24000 khash/s on my living room's 8800GT 113500 khash/s on my main computer's GTX570 176500 khash/s on my girlfriend's/son's computer's HD5850 (all in a mining pool of course) I'm going to bed now, but I still have a Wolfdale e8400 and a single-core Conroe Celeron that aren't digging for coins yet, I have to figure out if it's worth the power cost [highly doubtful] I'd love any suggestions on my modest little setup, and I think it will be very interesting to watch what happens in the very near future now that it just had a sudden surge of exposure/popularity Happy mining!

It was also on Slashdot.
I saw that. I think reddit is the cause of the spike though, seeing as it gets orders of magnitude more traffic than Slashdot.

SO we allegedly have Reddit, /b/, slashdot, and others. If the point to bit coin is growth, how come this hasn't happened earlier? The bored neckbearded internet children are just what we need!!

That can definitely account for a lot of traffic, but unless I'm mistaken, it didn't hit the frontpage of Reddit. As far as I know, r/technology is not part of the standard Reddit frontpage. So you won't see it, unless you subscribe to that subreddit specifically. I'm not 100% sure about this, but it seems to be confirmed by http://redditsnapshot.sweyla.com/ which archives snapshots of the Reddit frontpage and a search for Bitcoin reveals nothing.

I'm one of those Like above, I found out about bit coin last night, did a couple hours of almost obsessive reading, and like what I see. I think this has very interesting potential. 'Course I can't really generate much on my dinky laptop, but every bit counts, I guess Buy some through MtGox and spend them on things you might have bought with dollars, anyways. That's the biggest contribution you can make. Agreed.

Who would have thought that Jason Calacanis's sensational, over the top form of journalism would be one of the best forms of exposure this project has ever seen

that's how the internet works, no matter how many well-argued scholarly articles appear it'll always be the linkbait with titles like [ DO NOT POST SESC LINKS ]'ARE YOU READY FOR THE BITCOIN ARMAGGEDON?'[/url] that will get all the traffic. you clicked on that link right? see

So I decided to have a look at the stats and they are quite impressive.
Is there any way for normal users to see these stats (uniques/hour and uniques/day), or do only Reddit moderators have access?
