The point here is to profit. Excluding the initial 15 or so participants, who were all equally matched and wouldnt require a starting balance column, it's pretty clear if someone started now at $90 and got to $100, they did a hell of a job compared to the person sitting on $100 USD for the past 10 days.

This absolutely is not true. There was a bull-trap at the begging of the game when price fell, stalled for a while, almost all of us actively playing bought at that moment, and then price fell again sharply. You would have been caught in it almost sure, and claiming that you would not is just empty bragging. You have no proof that you would do better.

And if the price rose...? I bet everyone who started would love new joiners getting $110.

If prices rise then people will have much more than 110. But it still possible that some keep making bad trades and stay in the under 100 level anyway

Trading is much like poker, bad players can beat professional players in the short term due to high variance and luck, but in the long term professionals will rise to the top and the bad players will be broke or have quit due to losses. It's not so interesting to see who is on top right now only 11 days in this game, but in 6 months from now we'll have a much more interesting picture I'm sure. Smiley

Thought about it some more and change my mind, the way it works now is good.

Once you consider the potential of the price halving or doubling, it's clear that starting at a set amount doesn't work that well. A static starting amount goes well with a percent loss/profit model, but this method works well in it's own way. Sorry for the thread crap.

Am I wrong or out of 53 people trading 2 have made a profit , 10 didn't trade and have the same amount and ...... around 40 have lost money?

You wrong.

Some people, like me, entered later in the game and received less money(9X dollar, the median)

I made some profit so far

that's a fair point actually, a column should be added to the spread with what everyone's starting USD balance was.

good point, maybe I'll add that column when I have time.
Not much people joined after the first of January yet, so it's still manageable to look up those people.

Why is that relevant? Do you suggest that those who entered late would not fall into that bull-trap in the beginning of the game like almost all of us? I thought it was a mistake to let people that were late in the game, and median result to start with was very fair, and now latecomers claim their $ is better than the $ from the rest of us?

TL;DR they shouldn't be let in the game in the first place.

column would only be added for bragging rights. I think the median thing is very fair for new people.

I would like to join.

Mean now is 91.21

I would like to join too if possible.

Thank you

I can't verify the median anymore, because these messages are more than 24h old, so I just add you both with a 91.21 USD balance

TL;DR they shouldn't be let in the game in the first place.

The only reason I didnt get a starting balance of $100 is that when I saw this thread, I thought the price was too high. When I came back to buy, I had to take the median balance. I didnt realize you could reserve the 100usd (that makes no sense to me at all)

The point here is to profit. Excluding the initial 15 or so participants, who were all equally matched and wouldnt require a starting balance column, it's pretty clear if someone started now at $90 and got to $100, they did a hell of a job compared to the person sitting on $100 USD for the past 10 days.

those inactive ones with 100 USD will all soon loose money. Activity check is happening Wink

and I understand that it doesn't feel 'fair', but in the long run, this will be the most fair way to add new people to the game.
I repeat: how would you feel if BTC took of on jan 1st to 500 USD and you would get 100 USD as starting balance while others made a lot of money? Wink

The reason behind the "reserving" of 100 USD is that a median is very volatile when you only have a few players.

it's updated, but you don't need an update to trade.
You can just post BUY or SELL and the exchange rate. Updates are done in chronological order, so it's always correct Wink

I have updated everything. Rank numbers are colored.
I want to give people at least 48 hours the chance to post something here, so I extended the activity check with 18 hours.

I'll now send all members marked as "inactive" the following message:

Quote
Hi speculator!

We implemented a new Activity Rule in the Trading Simulator Game.
You are currently marked as "inactive".

Don't worry, you still have 48 hours to post something in the game topic (this doesn't need to be a trade, just post something).
This will be the only reminder. In the future, you are required to check the scoreboard. It will tell you if you are required to post something.
These "activity checks" will be conducted on a regular basis.

Link so scoreboard: bit.do/speculationgame or http://goo.gl/lKcDLa
Link to game topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=890086.0

friendly greetings,

dnaleor

This message will only be send once to every player who is marked as inactive for the first time.

Incrementing penalties work great, if the overhead isn't too much.
1% for first violation, 2% for second, 3% for third, etc.

Inevitably, a quiet period will come where little trading is done.
It might relieve your burden (and reduce the signal-to-noise ratio of the thread) if some sort of voluntary "I am still active" toggle were flippable, say via an automatically cleared, and re-checkable by users checkbox on the leaderboard.

The way you have it, with no changes, will work in the long run - usually once someone goes idle, they're gone for good.
The only place that the % amount will really matter will be for someone that lapses and needs a nudge.  In that case, ascending penalties is a stronger motivation to re-start today, and not tomorrow.

Thought it would be a fun game to check in every once in a while on certain highs and lows but I have enough things going on to need to check into a thread every other day.

it's not every other day, just one post in 10 days is enough.
