Wences Casares claiming that Bitcoin will be bigger than the internet.

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-bitcoin-may-have-more-impact-than-the-internet-2015-2

Quote
WC: It's exactly like that. And look, if bitcoin continues to grow at the same rate as it has for the last five years, we can expect to finish 2015 with 50 million users. That's a fivefold increase in one year.

I didn't know that Bitcoin has so many users.

Hey, BTC sits on the Internet. It wouldn't exist without it.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

You need internet for Bitcoin to work. By definition, Bitcoin cannot be larger than the internet.

An economy based on endless growth is unsustainable.

That is actually wrong. Only the current implementation needs Internet.

In Finland somebody is already broadcasting the blockchain and transactions over a subchannel of the terrestial TV signal. Jeff Garzik (IIRC) was working on a satellite broadcasting of the Bitcoin blocks and transactions.

One could send own transactions to the uplink center for broadcasting via a slow POTS modem, carrier pigeons carrying microSD cards or even printed as a QR codes on a postcard.

So the Internet requirement is just a current implementation restriction.

Edit: couple of years ago we were discussing here multicasting via a moon bounce (EME). Search for it.

I can't see other way of scalability other than using internet
That you can't see is your problem and your limitation. People who understand the technology actually know that Bitcoin protocol is somewhat inefficient emulation of a global broadcast medium using peer-to-peer gossip protocol. Immense amount of bandwidth and energy could be saved by the technically more advanced use of the well known broadcasting and multicasting media.
