You need internet for Bitcoin to work. By definition, Bitcoin cannot be larger than the internet.
That is actually wrong. Only the current implementation needs Internet.
In Finland somebody is already broadcasting the blockchain and transactions over a subchannel of the terrestial TV signal. Jeff Garzik (IIRC) was working on a satellite broadcasting of the Bitcoin blocks and transactions.
One could send own transactions to the uplink center for broadcasting via a slow POTS modem, carrier pigeons carrying microSD cards or even printed as a QR codes on a postcard.
So the Internet requirement is just a current implementation restriction.
Edit: couple of years ago we were discussing here multicasting via a moon bounce (EME). Search for it.
