Title: Avatars re-enabled
Post by: theymos on April 01, 2015, 04:08:50 AM
It is now once again possible to upload an avatar to the forum. You must be a full member or above to upload an avatar. Go to this page (also linked in your "Forum Profile Information" settings):
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=avatar

You can only upload new avatars: you can't choose one from the server or use a link as you could before. (If you are currently using one of these types of avatars, the upload avatar page will say that you don't have an avatar.) Also, uploaded avatars are not resized: they are simply rejected if they are too large.

Can we have animated gifs?

No.

Sweet. In theory this should cut down on the number of scams when people create brand new impersonation accounts as it is difficult to impersonate an avatar without the ability to upload an avatar (as a brand new member)

Cool. I think it'll take some getting used to seeing people with avatars who didn't have them before. I'm not sure whether to have one or not now. I think it's a wise idea to limit then to Full Members too.

Hopefully, but some people can never be helped. Theymos also didn't have an avatar before so they could still impersonate him.

Doubt it'll happen. Too easy for newbs to abuse it by impersonating others. Besides, I think it's a nice additional perk to receive once you hit a Full Member status which doesn't take that long to achieve.

Good to see some fresh avatars on the forum. What is the reason though to limit avatar uploads to only full member and upwards? Why not add members?

Awesome, I can finally change my outdated avatar to something else :) Thanks for re-enabling this and hopefully it won't cause anymore issues like it did in the past.

Probably to minimise the possibility of abuse. You can achieve Member status in as little as 16 days whereas it's a bit longer for Full Member. And as mentioned above it's a nice perk to achieve with time. You're nearly a Full Member as well so not long to wait.

I don't think you can achieve member status in 16 days?

Yes I know but I'll still have to wait a week or two, which is painful. If avatars are disabled again, oh well...

Junior members still takes at least 42 days to make... 14*3 = 42

Nope. It takes 3 activity periods which can be achieved in 16 days if you time it right.

If you view their profile page then you can see what they actually uploaded.

edit: I actually like the idea of having a randomized avatar shown when you post and then a 'real' one shown on your profile. It will make it more difficult to impersonate someone while adding a little bit of fun to avatars

I'm sure they will be possible but doubt they will be allowed. I think they were banned on this forum previously because they were becoming too flashy and distracting. I don't mind gif avatars personally but maybe an option to disable animated ones could be added for those that do.

Oh yes please, pretty please, if our admin overlords ever allow animated GIFs for avatars, then consider the disable option as well. It's not that I dislike animated GIFs per se, but I've never liked animated graphics mixed into textual content as it's a distraction to my eyes indeed.

If you especially dislike the avatar you were given, uploading a new avatar (or reuploading your current one) will give you a random new one. If anyone has any ideas for more "fool" avatars to add, post them here and I might add them later today.

The avatar feature will work properly after April 1.

Now I realized that having so many colorful avatars are disturbing and so we may soon see a post "Disable all avatars" like we have "Disable all sig ad campaigns"  :D Just kidding  ;)

Normally SMF forum doesn't allow you to upload .gif extension files. (It may be changed now).
But if you rename the extension to .png you can upload it as animated gif. (It should be under or equal to 120x60 px)

Pretty cool great job, i dont know why this decision was made but its a good one and brings a bit more life into the forum.

I'm sure we'll get them soon enough, though you can disable avatars like signatures (though it probably won't stop people from complaining). I was wondering how long it would be before sig campaigns capitalise on this or people start renting/selling them individually:

You could do an avatar campaign, perhaps offer a bonus for people changing to a dadice avatar?

I doubt avatar renting will be as lucrative. The main reason for this is that you can't make it a clickable link like you can with signatures, it isn't really a proper ad. Also, I think people value their avatars more than their signatures.

Where's the clickable link on a Billboard or TV advert? It might not be as lucrative as a signature and link but an image is still very big exposure. If people pay for Personal Texts they'll certainly pay for avatars and for much more, but I agree people will be less likely to sell them, but if the price is right many probably won't have issue. I can see some campaigns requiring you to put it though.

Newbie please ;)

Doubt it'll happen. Too easy for newbs to abuse it by impersonating others. Besides, I think it's a nice additional perk to receive once you hit a Full Member status which doesn't take that long to achieve.

I do not abuse, because I want to hope this happens for Newbies [only me] I will pay it, if you want :'(

I want to use this photo :-[

I'm sure we'll get them soon enough, though you can disable avatars like signatures (though it probably won't stop people from complaining). I was wondering how long it would be before sig campaigns capitalise on this or people start renting/selling them individually:

I don't want to sell my avatar else people will start ignoring my PMs as well  :D I won't be able to even sell my gift cards or exchange money due to that. Selling my signature space is enough  :)

BTW, did Theymos actually play a prank? I don't like this man in my avatar. He looks awful  :'( :-\

If you especially dislike the avatar you were given, uploading a new avatar (or reuploading your current one) will give you a random new one. If anyone has any ideas for more "fool" avatars to add, post them here and I might add them later today.

The avatar feature will work properly after April 1.

It will most likely stick around, but the avatars are randomized, so you can't really choose what you want to as an avatar as another user will view you differently as you can see for yourself.  ;D

I actually half-hoped that people will have to pay a small fee to put on an avatar. but I guess it's fine as long as there's a rank restriction  ;D

Please also note that 2nd April onwards all troll avatars will be hard-coded to your profile and changing avatars will be disabled again.
So all 'April Fool' avatars will stay permanently on your profile.

If you don't want this to happen, immediately remove your avatars before start of 2nd April GMT time!

i don't think there was ever that large of a preimum for accounts with avatars, maybe 10% at the most and less for higher ranked accounts. It has also been known for a while that avatars were going to come in the new forum so the preimum has been shrinking towards almost nothing.

There's a bug, i upload one avatar and end up with another. View your profile from another account to see the difference (the main profile shows the correct avatar but that is not the case..)

read the previous posts, it is intentional.
sorry for this, kinda feels I had to

your avatars will return to how it should be once the April Fools day have passed

This was the best time to return the avatars. Like I've said in a previous post, a lot of people will get confused and the pictures that are being generated are awesome.

People are still confused or oblivious to it if you read some of the replies above. Just goes to show you what a great/clever joke it was. Most April's Fools are lame and cliche but this was very well and intelligently done. I think it could be dragged out much longer than just today and half the people would still be none-the-wiser months down the line especially those who don't have alt accounts.

If theymos has made it so it was not possible to tell what someone's uploaded avatar was without being logged into their account then it probably would have gone on for a lot longer.

I think a lot of people are just spamming who are confused as they clearly have not read this thread and it has been explained several times that this is a very clever April fools joke.

I think it is a lot of fun to get to have your own personal avatar, it should make each person more unique. I think it is somewhat strange that so many people have spongebob avatars though. I wouldn't think that so many people who are into bitcoin would be into spongebob

If you especially dislike the avatar you were given, uploading a new avatar (or reuploading your current one) will give you a random new one. If anyone has any ideas for more "fool" avatars to add, post them here and I might add them later today.

The avatar feature will work properly after April 1.

I am seriously a TUBELIGHT  :-[. I read the above message over 5 times but I am still blank. I don't know whether theymos is going to disable the avatars on April 2nd or this post was serious that the feature will work tomorrow. I don't want to have my current avatar for the rest of my life. Should I remove my avatar?

Edit: I removed my avatar  :'( :'(

It seem from reading this thread that somehow people see their avatar differently if they use a secondary account. Why someone would want to use more then one account is beyond me.

I am using an avatar that represents my favorite football team. Does it show as a houseplant when you look at it?

Maybe having avatars enabled isn't such a good thing or we could allow a once every 3 month change?

I think it will not again the forum rules to "rent" our avatar, but I am not sure. A moderator (or maybe better an admin) should express his opinion about this "situation". I think the payrate will be very interesting.

Yes it is an april fool :

:)

If you especially dislike the avatar you were given, uploading a new avatar (or reuploading your current one) will give you a random new one. If anyone has any ideas for more "fool" avatars to add, post them here and I might add them later today.

The avatar feature will work properly after April 1.

Ahh ok, I thought everyone was just using the same photos until I realised that it was a joke. The feature is good though, an avatar adds a lot to the user, makes it much more distinguishable between users.

I thought it was an April fools joke. Is it only available today? :)

Only today (April Fools Day) are the avatars switched to the random joke/meme/Spongebob avatars. After today everybody's avatars will be switched back to the ones they have uploaded, and apparently from now on all members above "Full Member" status will be able to upload/change avatars at will.

Sweet! An animated gif! I believe that's the first and only one I've ever seen. 8)

Before you start spreading that as fact remember today is still April 1st and he said "after April 1st" he didnt say "starting April 2nd" so it very well could be memes for a while yet

Thanks for avatars. It sure is good option to have... again. Better later that never. Too bad we can't have animated pictures and I think I would be better if avatars would be available only for Senior members and above. This way you really will have to earn it.

No the fake avatars (the joke ones) are avaliable today but the new avatars will be avaliable after today is over. So its partially a joke.

I like how its when I was checking my PM's and see a weird looking pineapple that I realize this function is BACK!
About TIME You Fool XD (Apr 1 I see what you did there)
I mean out of habit I'm keeping mine lol but good for everyone else this deserves a party

No. I think it is great that lower rank members do not have the ability to pick avatar. It should be a privilege to have one and not fundamental functionality. I am so used to have this forum without avatars that is almost a sad moment for me... People keep complaining about signatures - now they will probably start complaining about flashy avatars as well.

Not entirely correct. It's partly a April fools, but after today. The avatar feature will work like normal as theymos said.

:)

If you especially dislike the avatar you were given, uploading a new avatar (or reuploading your current one) will give you a random new one. If anyone has any ideas for more "fool" avatars to add, post them here and I might add them later today.

The avatar feature will work properly after April 1.

Nah its not an elaborate prank, he just chose to launch it on april fools day so he could launch it with a joke (replacing all of our avatars with some funny ones from then).
It will resume normally tomorrow as theymos has said.

Avatars were turned off due to something and yea I think it was some attacks. I don't know exactly but I seem to remember someone talking about doing malicious things with the upload button and somehow exploited something and therefore they disabled the function.

I've logged out of my account and my avatar hasn't changed.
Theymos has said that this will be a permanent implementation after April Fools's, so maybe it is after April Fools's day in theymos' timezone?

Thanks theymos for re-enabling avatars! Sorry if this has been asked before, (I don't want to read through all 16 pages) but why has this been re-implemented so suddenly? (I'm not complaining.)

Could be. I'm not sure where theymos lives but it's already April 2 in Europe, Asia, and Australasia. It's still April 1 in the United States though.

EDIT: I just checked your profile and it's still different. This is what I see:

That's pretty much it. Basically someone uploaded a malicious file into the avatar directory and used it to hack the forums. This was the result:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKrOHAfMdxI

The ability to upload new avatars has been disabled since then.

Avatars are working normally now.

There are a small handful of people who had an animated avatar before this new system. I'm not going to remove those, but if they update their avatars then animation won't be possible.

That could be true, also maybe he was planning to change it at a certain time but then there was a ddos attack and he went to bed or something.

That's what happened.

I have to admit I was actually fooled by it. I was a little annoyed by some of you "morons" to pick the same stupid avatar. I worst part is that upon rereading the whole thread today I could have known what was up yesterday.

So buy a full member account and after you will be able to put the avatar to that account, it is not against the forum rules buy & sell the various accounts (remember to ask a signed message for the ownership prove and use always the escrow).

I signed up on August 1. So if you think about it, I waited 7 months to have an avatar, others might have waited way longer than me. 4 months will pass very fast and see it this way, you have 4 months to choose an avatar :D

Probably not angry about this, but probably a bit ticked off. Now accounts with avatars are going to be devalued, but avatars don't REALLY add much to the price, I have experienced this and didn't get much more than the average price without an avatar.

But when people need loans and put there accounts up as collateral having an avatar used to increase the value of the account. I think the biggest thing is going to be getting used to seeing accounts with avatars all over the place it used to be a rare thing.

avatars was first disabled after the site was hacked by someone back in 2013. if I'm not mistaken, the attacker was able to upload a script in the avatars directory, so theymos disabled until he could find a way to fix it, which he did

Don't worry, the new forum should have avatars for everyone.

I think the reason why theymos disabled avatars for members and lower is that SMF is still SMF, and no matter how hard you try to fix it, there probably still is a vulnerability.
Members who have been here for a long time probably have no interest in hacking the forum.

It's so colorful now, with different avatars for everybody. It's great! Thanks theymos!

It still cuts down on account impersonation. Monbux is talking about fake accounts that try and make their usernames look like a more trusted member. None of these accounts will ever make it to Full Member, so there is no fear of them being able to set an avatar.

You have already acknowledged that the question has been asked before (by using "again" in the first of these posts).

Still, even if it's the first time you ask this question, or any other, chances are that someone has already asked it in the past, and it may have been answered already. Always search before asking questions.

It's coming. Data migration + server ops setup these days.

The configuration for this would be much desirable for the creator of the theme. As the development of the forum is progressing, we are on the Admin and Moderation side of things now. This is good input and it would be a decision from the Bitcointalk staff.

I can't really say but I will say that we're close.

It's a general purpose forum that's intended to compete with others. Once the theme engine is in place, we'll be able to get more involvement from the public. For now, you can check out the source. On top of that a beta is being evaluated with the staff at this point so please sit tight.

Even though we're all eager to see the forum come that is completely off-topic here.
I'm more interested in final rules for Avatars. We can't have people posting around with NFSW avatars and such.

Here are the rules if you were looking for them -
Quote
1) Is nudity allowed? If so, to what extreme? To a non nsfw tag?

No.

Quote
2) Is NSFL allowed? [NSFL = Not Safe For Life]

No.

Quote
3) Is other adult content allowed?

Maybe.

If I receive (or anticipate receiving) several complaints about something, it's probably too much.

Quote
4) Are paid avatar campaigns allowed?

Yes.

Quote
5) Is copyright content allowed? How should copyright holders request deletion of infringing content?

You are not allowed to infringe copyright, of course. I have no way of knowing whether you have a license to use particular images, and it's additionally sometimes difficult to determine whether fair use applies, so I will not be proactively removing possibly-infringing images. The DMCA process is used.

Quote
6) Is racial / sexist content allowed?

Probably.

Quote
7) Is there a limit on 'annoyingness'?

Animation is not allowed, so I feel like it'd be difficult to create an avatar that is sufficiently annoying that I'd want to remove it.

Quote
8 ) Are 'imitation' avatars allowed? Ie wearing avatars of specific companies to give the false impression of representation.

Copying someone's avatar in order to impersonate them or cause confusion is not allowed. But if you both use some generic picture of some famous person or something, that's probably not going to count, and using elements of someone's avatar for purposes other than impersonation will probably be allowed. Same for companies.

Quote
9) How should users report those with infringing avatars?

DMCA takedown notices or any other legal thing must be emailed to me. For other issues, post about it in Meta.

Thanks theymos!

And i think the avatar page should state that no animated gifs are allowed. I spent time to make one only to find the error message that i cant upload animated gifs. The website claims one can use GIF, PNG and JPEG. So a warning would be nice that animated gifs arent allowed, only normal gifs.

I guess PNG and JPEG arent able to animate something?

For example i tried to make the QR code even smaller. It works if you use interpolation but the smartphone has a hard time to read it. So that size is the minimum. But that means i cant write much and its not very good readable. A possibility to at least have 2 frames, maybe only working after a moderator approved, would help in these cases.

Maybe you can think about that theymos?

Thanks anyways... :)

Im happy to use them! This enables faster searching for posts (of mine) in a thread, because every avatar is unique.
Not such a great timing though, I really thaught it was an April fool... But then I realized that I could really do it.
However, THANKS theymos! Best admin ever!

This may have been answered already... If the new forum software doesn't support animations, will current animated avatars carry over to the new forum software as long as they are not changed?

This is going to be an issue. I also identify many posters by their avatars. I really hope this won't get abused too much, but I can't see how it won't really.

I don't think it's an issue, people are going to copy avatars and there is no rule that stops them from doing this. But it is for the best to have a different avatar if you see someone already has it.

@redsnow, found 2 avatars for you. See if you like them:

Exactly, I am copying the redsn0w's avatar but you are right every user should have a different (and personal) avatar only for differentiate. However thanks for the avatars, but I am fine with the actual one.

Yah, hillarious that it was reenabled on april fool's day. Nevertheless, you were bound to notice avatars being back sooner or later.  The accounts on here went from only a special few having one, to nearly everyone having one.  A real explosion.

farming accounts is something like making 1 (or 14 for some) post every two weeks without missing any of those two weeks. AFAIK nobody even sell bitcointalk accounts back in 2012.

I believe it is related to animated png's, not gifs. At some point in time I remember making the determination in my head that animation had become allowed again but I believe it was just because I had seen some other users with one.

Good to see some fresh avatars on the forum. What is the reason though to limit avatar uploads to only full member and upwards? Why not add members?

Probably to minimise the possibility of abuse. You can achieve Member status in as little as 16 days whereas it's a bit longer for Full Member. And as mentioned above it's a nice perk to achieve with time. You're nearly a Full Member as well so not long to wait.

I don't think you can achieve member status in 16 days?

Yes I know but I'll still have to wait a week or two, which is painful. If avatars are disabled again, oh well...

You are absolutely right Monnt it is difficult to reach Full Member in 16 days of period for any newbie unless he is an expert in using bitcointalk as well as writing good content about the topic/subject - I have been trying my best to get few Merits to become a member which is still a dream for me as of now

Wish me good Luck and I am inspired by seeing your activity and merits - you must have done a great work to achieve more merits than the activity - A Big Cheers for you.

Would you please suggest a method I need to follow to get some merit please

All these days I have been writing about different coins on different server - As per my observation the people who does make their bitcointalk bounty (Coin owner) themselves  are new to bitcointalk and they are starting with newbie role though we write some contest on their bitcointalk topic there wasn't any appreciation for that in terms of Merits

Yes i agree apart from coin owners there are some Legendary/Members/FullMembers and Heros are there in those topics but they barely give merits to others - I am 100% not sure what they think.

Anyway this is just my observation on bitcointalk from last few months - felt like sharing with you Monnt

I would love this option of allowing users to have Avatar and good to protect it from being misused. As a members those who start Journey with bitcointalk should also have some Patience to get to those Ranks like FullMember.

LOL can you locate the reason for you that is holding you back from ranking up? 130 activity and yet no merit, still a Jr. Member.

Mate, No disrespect - have you checked the dates of those posts? It was on April 01, 2015. there were no merit requirements. Only activities I guess. So it was comparatively easy to rank up.

Just stop posting blindly on everything. Before posting anything do a little reading on the comments made, and notice when and why they made.

Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. If I am not wrong then the use Monnt hasn't earn any single merit yet. All these merits are from the free airdrop.

@LoyceV: I have noticed for some users the merit data shows nothing. i.e: this http://loycevsbasement.privatedns.org/Merit/history/393987.html
Is there any specific reason? Thanks mate in advance.
