I think the best way that Bitcoin can be spread is by doing public demonstrations, and giving free BTC small amounts around 0.02 to those who take an interest.

The only people who could do this is the ones who brought when the price was incredibly cheap and are now BTC rich, this will be a great way to give back to the community and intern help raise BTC popularity and usage and of course making it widespread.

Giving money away just for the sake of trying it out is insane, especially giving away 0.02, which is pretty costly as well.
I think it would be better to fund businesses that would accept bitcoin, or to encourage existing ones into accepting it, and therefore give a chance for
those customers to actually have more places to spend their coins.
You can't get global acceptance by force and all at once, taking baby steps is way safer and in the end result far more reliable thing to do.

There was a place to get small amounts, and there still is ; it's called bitcoin faucets, but the amounts that are being given away are quite small
to ensure the faucet can remain active and not generate loss to it's owner. There is no way someone could maintain give away of 0.02 for long.
On 1 person that would genuinely be interested in bitcoin , you would have 100 people that would just sell it right away.

I only see them dumping it and people abusing it in all possible ways.

giving away $9 just so people can see it move from your wallet to their newly made wallet, alone is futile and expensive.
what you need to do is find local shops in your area to accept bitcoin. or encourage new ones. and then use maybe just a couple $ to let the person you gave that funds to, buy a coffee or a snack.

the reason is.

i can make an app that sends bullshit value from one phone to another.. in milliseconds.. but if that person cant do anything with bullshit coin.. you might as well threw a brown shirt button on the street (looks like a penny from a distance) and wait around to see if any passers by pick it up. and what they do with it once they realise they cant see it as a useable currency

yes, us bitcoiners know what it is and know its value. but if a stranger accepts it and cant even buy a coffee or toilet roll with it.. they will never think about using it again.

remember bitcoins ease of transfer, is not the same as:
ease of use (lack of retailers)
ease of obtaining (registering with exchanges and buying)
ease of understanding (converting 0.00x into common fiat)

so try not to throw $9 of bitcoin at random people without having a bigger plan

think about where people once they become fascinated with your demo can easily and legitimately buy bitcoin.
think about why each person would have a need for it.
think about where people can use bitcoin.

the 'need for it' is more about the demograph of people you are speaking to.
EG.
foreigners - talk about remittance to their home country/family
investors - talk about the asset holding(hoarding) or day trading on legitimate exchanges
consumers - talk about the shops in your area they can use it with

try to think of as many uses/solutions as you can, and then when asking people what they do in their daily lives you can tell them how bitcoin can help them

Giving away 0.02 is too much for anyone to giveaway the most I will likely give to people on normal circumstances is 0.001-0.005

Ripple had giveaways here back when they were allowed. Early on there was a giant ripple giveaway, and it must have encouraged some of the people who got coins to get involved and buy more. Whatever your view on its centralization there are people who invested in it for years. Not everyone given free coins dumps, some buy more coins.

Most people will still dump and even worse, some people will find a way to abuse the system and start claiming tons of them.
If the payout is quite high, it is even worth the effort for people to create fake acounts and such. We should not help them in acquiring a stash of coins in this way.

there is only one effective way, big and well known merchants should adopt bitcoin previously regulated for that country, and add a discount if you buy in bitcoin

Giving small amounts away was a great idea a few years ago.  i am unconvinced now tho as to how effective it is, most people i know would just forget about it if you gave it to them.  as has been said i think using in those stores who currently accept it and convincing others to do the same is the way forward.

It is good that we may provide a platform where bitcoin will be able to grow. people need to start seeing the importance of the bitcoin and its trading. Giving back to the community is a very good thing, However. we need not to lock this whole idea to the persons who are super rich only. First of all it is too much to give away for free to anyone, with current price of bitcoin it would come to $4-$5 and secondly even if someone decided to do it, there is no way to differentiate between bitcoin newbies and veterans on-line and because of that it will get severely abused.

Also, anyone who is interested in bitcoin will ultimately find some giveaways on either this forum, social media sites such as twitter/fb/reddit, if they really have interest in Bitcoin.

Most important thing is education, if you really want to spread the word out, teach people around you about Bitcoin, make them understand the concept. If you bring in people by luring them with a giveaway, they won't stay in for long, they'll just look at it as easy money and will most probably leave when they see no other easy way of getting it.

Telling your friends and family is definitely not a way to spread Bitcoin effectively. Advertising is a decent way, but other than that, there is really no good way to spread the word of Bitcoin.

We were seeing large companies give discounts to people using Bitcoin not long ago; newegg was giving 5% discounts, if I remember correctly, Dell was giving a similar number in discounts, and a few bullion dealers I saw were also offering 1% discounts.

It has happened in the past, but I'm not sure if its had any impact.

There are already people spreading the word about bitcoin it just don't get much attention though. Headline like "Earn 2-10K through bitcoin" might just caught the eyes of newcomers especially on the webmasters forum.

0.02 btc is a bit much to just give away. Maybe 10.000 satoshi would be okay if people were up to it and then they could start doing faucets and see where it goes from there. Faucets are easy to do and you may earn not that much but it could give people somewhat of an understanding how bitcoins work.

Public awareness maybe is the key, I'm planning to come up of a sticker that I can put in my car like "eat, sleep, Bitcoin" something like that or a a bumper sticker. A gift can be a good idea like a physical coin loaded with a few Satoshis that will allow them to buy something online that accepts Bitcoin.

Giving free BTC wouldn't be that ideal but giving BTC for the effort done in anyway would be the better picture in helping spreading Bitcoin right away. I started in someway and the effect that I've seen in the past week from the people around me is their really eager to understand how the system works and how great it is into easing money transfers while online.

Just help people near you understand what is bitcoin about .
If you give them bitcoins free and they dont know this will be waste of your money because they will throw it because they dont know the value of it.

You are talking only to tell something good because any of your proposals, according to me, cannot be verified in reality. If someone which is rich will begin to spread such amounts of bitcoin to everyone new with it soon will become he himself to ask the others that amount. On the other hand, no one who own normal amounts of it cannot do such thing. The price of bitcoin is high without having reason to be so. Who know how it will be its price when will have reason to go higher (for example the halving). Having such things in mind no one can give as a gift not that amount but even much few. Anyhow I don't want to ruin the good atmosphere tha can be created with this post. So I am not going ahead with my thoughts.

What people should do make a poster in the street about bitcoin or something that people will see it everyday.
Maybe hire some people to make a advertisement about bitcoin in the television or in the internet like YouTube.

I think it's pretty effective to just use Bitcoin around your friends without pushing it in their faces. They will notice the benefits eventually, like the ease of use and low fees.
When I'm ordering pizza with some friends for example, I pay using Bitcoin and my friends notice that I don't have to pay the 1 euro transaction fee that they have to pay (Using online banking/CC).

That's a nice option instead of pushing it into their faces. I might try introducing bitcoin to my friends this way. Everyone loves pizza and it's nice to show them how it all works.

that is good idea,and i also think that we can do demostration on some college or university,we can explain about bitcoin,and itroduce bitcoin as future payment,i think its will be eficient,because any student of college have many knowledge,esspesially they who take engineering faculty.

Giving Bitcoin away for free is fine, but give to people who will actually use the Bitcoin, not just dump it for fiat or forget about it. The best way is to demonstrate how Bitcoin can be used in everyday life and how easy it is to use it if one follows several simple rules. I have demonstrated to a few friends how to send and receive coins and it could be used to purchase gift cards, or even purchase electronic goods at a discount. These are things that draws people into Bitcoin, not just "free money".

Exactly this. Only people who are really interested, this includes they understand a bit of bitcoin, will appreciate it if you give them some free Bitcoin and show them where else they can use or spend it.
But giving it away to any persons, in hope to convince them, will not work.
We can not force the people to adopt BTC and pushing it agressively makes no sense as well.
The idea companies and merchants accepting it and giving a nice discount is an option we already have.This doesn't seem to help that much.

Social medias can be good, but I definitly think that meetings are better. There, people can ask questions, and see it answered in a few seconds by a physical person, and this is really something good. There, people thta want to learn go, and interested people then spread the informations.

I think whats happeneing in the media at the moment is certainly good for bitcoin, wheather or not its good or bad media at least it gets bitcoin out there. it seems like the last few months since all the extra coverage has really kicked bitcoin into overdrive. Of course i still think we should be pushing bitcoin to family and friends as well as advertising in your online store if you have one. Theres a lot that can be done still for bitcoin as we obviously arent quite there yet. Hopefully as more users start joining the knock on effect will cause more and more to gain trust in bitcoin and start using it themselfs.

we know ur british.. so imagine having an american 10 dollar bank note. you went around london and just hand over $10 to random people.. thinking it would convince people the dollar is better then the pound

Contrary to what many people here are saying here, I think small tips definitely spread awareness. Tipping a friend on Twitter through change tip for example will definitely make him interested in Bitcoin.

I think giveaways to the general public won't work that well. Not only will you waste a lot of money people will simply cash in their BTC for, say Paypal or fiat funds and learn nothing in return.

In my opinion we should probably get rid of the negativity around bitcoin that it has right now, such as the purchase of drugs, assassination, prostitution etc. etc. on the dark web. That is not good for BTC at all.

Probably need to be on the news headlines a bit more as well, right now all BTC is making news of is the founder Satoshi. We need to promote it more to able to let people actually get engaged and use it.

I tried to explain how bitcoin works for some people, but they just can't understand how something "generated out of nowhere" can have any value. They don't understand any fundamentals of economics also, so it's even harder to explain that fiat money also has no physical attachement anymore (since at least 1973, if I'm not mistaken).

So it's pretty complicated to the overall people, and that's the greatest barrier for the popularization of the technology. Start-ups are investing in making it "newbie-accessible", and that's a great work for crypto coin community.

When I saw " demonstrations", giving free... I stop to read further. I think bitcoin will do that by itself. We will  be witnesses of that rising, like we are now. I believe bitcoin is here for us, to make some thing easier, to make some things more simple. When other people find out about it they will joing, and they will pay to join if it needs, there is no need to give someone bitcoin to come here. Like Chinese proverb says : Give fish to a man and u will feed him for today, learn him hot to fishing and he will have food for the rest of his life.
So its better for people to come here, get involved, and learn how to " fishing".

As I read, half amount of the available bitcoin as of now belongs to like 10 to 20 individuals/organizations and other half amount are those circulating in the market around the world. If these individuals/organizations suddenly dump their bitcoins then it might be very bad for bitcoin price. To cut it short, one should not hoard a huge amount of bitcoin, it should continuously  circulate in the market to be spread effectively.

i got that,effective or not deploy bitcoin depending on where and what method you use to do a demonstration or introduction, if you do it in an office environment, you probably do not need to hold a giveaway, but if you do it in high school or college, giveaway will greatly help those interested in bitcoin.

Or mostly in the first top 3 in google, another way are bitcoin startups which could spread very efficiently.

Only advertisement would not serve the purpose as people would not trust it unless we introduce them personally to bitcoins, as people have more faith in people around them who are already into bitcoins, as it is said that mouth publicity is the biggest publicity and people would have more faith on the word shared by their peers or family so I believe that personal guidance can make a great level of difference in promoting bitcoins on a larger scale.

I would suggest mass marketing as that is the only effective way for it to be known world wide and in a positive way to gain viable market recognition.
Having it's value drop sudden does not help it's case but that is the way bitcoin and the other cryptocurrencies are. That in my opinion is what is holding it back from being accepted on a broader scale. People want stability in there currencies if they are going to invest completely into them.

Learning is an ongoin process. People would no jump onto something just by hearing about it for the first time.

The most effective way is introduce and ask you family to use bitcoin,than tell to your friends,and than to your girlfriend and your work colleage,and if you have acces,try to demonatrate bitcoin to junior high school and university.

For bitcoin to be spread better, there should be made strategic alliances with some news outlets.
They control the public opinion and when needed they can help spreading the word, with information about bitcoin etc.

Nowadays, bitcoin is already spread accross the world. Many people are already using it as a means of exchange and in 2016 it will go mainstream.

The best way (as shown on the bitcoin website) is to mail your favourite webshop and ask them to accept bitcoin as payment gateway.

If webshops get a lot of request, we can be sure they will accept it eventually since they don't want to lose out on customers.

The media in most countries are opposing bitcoin in any way they can, which makes it very hard for bitcoin entrepreneurs to get foot on the ground.

We should talk a lot about bitcoin, on school, at work even when waiting at the bus.

Just looking at how the amount of misinformation is spreading around, the focus should be on telling what bitcoin is all about.

Giving out free coins isn't a good way of advertising it actually as people would just claim the coins and cash it out. Instead, public demonstrations, advertisements on television, newspapers and magazines would make people aware of this currency and more companies would adopt this currency as their primary payment method. Currently, the media has ruined its image and hence only bitcoin users can explain its use in a more effective manner rather than media sources. Banners too can help to give the currency necessary publicity.

Giving out free coins is something there bitcoin foundatoin can't fund. Simply too many people should be given free bitcoin. For that matter we already got faucets, which are meant for that.

IMO if everyone try to tell his co-workers, friends or people who listen to him it would help spread BTC fast and effectively and can be useful to these people too.

Yes spreading the awareness and advantages of bitcoin to merchants would help for bitcoin getting accepted in many business. That will simply give people some idea to get bitcoin and to use in those business.

Giving away money/btc to advertise btc is a stupid idea! People will just convert it to fiat, or will just do nothing with it.

For people to use btc, they need to see why its useful for them and, most importantly, cheaper. The only thing that comes to mind is transferring money overseas.

I tried that with few friends who were sending money to family oversease. I said, I can send it in instant for virtual free with bitcoin or litecoin. The follow up question was, what the receiver should do to change into fiat, as they need fiat. Telling them that they need to go to exchange, probably register, hook their bank account details, provide personal info to the exchange, pay exchange fees off course, was a bad idea. And off course they chose bank transfer. Less hassle for receivers.  

At least either one of buyer or seller if using bitcoin debit card or saving bitcoin or spending bitcoin directly would have made difference to you above overseas money transfer scenario.

I believe that there is no way to spread Bitcoin "effectively". As much as you try, most people won't be interested in using Bitcoin. There is just not enough Bitcoin related things on the face of the Earth. More people need to start using it before it becomes mainstream. People have to realise for themselves that Bitcoin is the way to go.

It is a very stupid idea to give people free Bitcoin. You will be losing your own money and they will either spend it and never use Bitcoin, or convert it to fiat and never use Bitcoin. That is not the way to do it.

Yes, my way of spreading bitcoin would be showing people the way of making free money. Because many people are getting easily attracted to free money providing sites, like faucets and PTC sites. When they are slowly growing with their little free money they are asking me about bitcoin and its advantages over other payment processors. This way effectively helps me to spread bitcoin.

I agree that this is a great way, but you need to ensure the people you are giving free BTC to are going to need to come back or want to come back for some reason after the free bitcoin has run out.  Getting their attention at the beginning is the easy part, keeping it is the hard part.

Doing this would be hard to do and may put a small business venture out of business quicker than it took them to start.  There needs to be a network for others to be part of so that there are no issues getting your pay converted to your local currency to buy things that are not offered under the same payments.

I do not know if anyone has had this thought but online application gaming is huge, and people spend ridiculous amounts of money on games, imagine the £850M spent on Candy Crush alone in 2014, if there was a 20% discount for using Btc then that would be your market penetration ballistic missile right there, and that is just one game.

Word of mouth does help in spreading the word but when I tried referring bitcoins to my friends, the first question they asked me is where can I use it. I couldn't recommend many websites as there are barely few websites that do accept bitcoins and hence when I explained to them the trading feature, they did take interest. That's the only positive factor that I can explain as of now.

This is not the ultimate Bitcoin goal. The true point of Bitcoin is the fact that it's money itself, that's what makes it special. As a payment network, it can also be superior if we scale thought the LN to global levels, but that's not the main point, which again, it's the fact that Bitcoin can make the goverment issued currencies obsolete.

Education is the most important.  Having informative resources in the form of websites and apps would be ideal.  There are many great information sites out there so you could simply tell those you know to check out certain websites to read and educate themselves

Giving out a small amount of bitcoin so people could practice with a wallet, exchange, and vault would be helpful but maybe not 0.02. 

Mainstream press is not something we can control but something that will certainly help in the future.

There are some very good suggestions here.  I was just at work tonight, and I check bitcointalk every now and then.  I told one of my coworkers what a signature campaign is and that I'd joined one, and kind of what bitcoin is all about.  He sounded interested, but he's definitely not a tech geek and I wouldn't expect him to jump on board.  I think people can kind of lead by example, which is what I was trying to do with him.  However, I have a hard time explaining why anyone should exchange their fiat for btc in order to buy something.  For the average Joe Blow there's just no reason to.

A bit of what I was thinking - there are 10 kinds of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't. In several years though when they are in mainstream usage that will not stop those that scoffed at the idea from whinging that prices are too high for them and they do not have any, which is why I am buying mine slowly now :)

Signature campaign owners are doing a great job in spreading Bitcoin into a lot of people, but Bitcoin will nature even itself out across a lot of hands because whales will sell a ton of times with every price peak we have. For every 100 dollars we go up, at least a couple big time whales are going to sell out of fear, which means a ton of new different people owning Bitcoin every time that happens.
