Not very much, but I used to be sloppy with saving my older wallet files, which contained some small amounts that I considered dust at the time. Same story as the hard disk discard, but not as bad monetarily. Maybe 0.02 or so.

How do you not realize that the obvious answer to your question (in the OP) is yes? There are quite a lot of people that have lost Bitcoin through various events (e.g. theft, sending to wrong addresses, hardware failure, no wallet backups and ect.). However, fortunately I can say that I'm not one of them. I've successfully avoided a lot of problematic events such as (Mt.Gox, Inputs.io, Cryptsy) and have properly managed to keep my wallets safe and secure.

Here is a story where someone lost 7500 bitcoins.
A story.

Lost in what way?  If bitcoin lost because of scams counts, I have lost over 1BTC and less than 3BTC.  Even more on gambling, but I doubt that counts.  I've never lost bitcoins due to of hardware failure or bad memory.

A big part of people here are gamblers, and of course, they lost money. Besides that, many people lost because of no backups, getting scammed and other.

I do not get into that circle as I didn't lose any Bitcoins. If it counts, I only lost 0.0005 I on purpose when my Bitcoin Core wallet needed to download 60gb of data and I didn't want to wait that much since my network isn't anything special.

You dont need to synchronize Bitcoin Core wallet, just get the private key of the address inside Bitcoin Core and import it to any other wallet you use

the important thing is how to move on from the defeat. no matter how big your losses. The most needed is to move on so that you quickly forget the defeat. because it was very painful

Lose in what sense ? If its by losing access to waller or private keys , then yes. Close to 0.4 BTC after I made a new wallet sent money to it, and before my end of the day backup my laptop crashed. Lost it all :/

How, and how much did you manage to lose?

I don't prefer to declare the total amount that i lost because the number is pretty high in the recent years but i remember once that i lost around 0.6BTC on trading an altcoin which i was holding for a long time then the price crashed hard to few satoshis which was the stupidest thing that i made trading an altcoin which was not so much popular.

I've recently been trying to guess the password to my old Bitcoin wallet from 2014, but no avail :( I guess I will try earn some Bitcoin from a signature campaign. I stupidly encrypted it with truecrypt, so I don't know how much is in there, but there must be at least 1BTC.

How, and how much did you manage to lose?

Every day I trade but I counted loss from trading was very small because it will come back in the next day. But I count the loss of the vast majority were from gambling sites and hyip total of about 0.1 BTC , and the money is not returned in contrast to trading. Loss today, profit tomorrow. thank you

i can't say i have never lost bitcoin but the total bitcoin lost by me is not big. i have lost some small amounts in one of my addresses that i have created with brainwallet and forgot the password :D

other than that i have only lost some in gambling and  some in trading.

and i think i should mention this huge topic about List of Major Bitcoin Heists, Thefts, Hacks, Scams, and Losses (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=576337.0)

Well aside from losing Bitcoins to gambling I have forgotten the passwords to several Blockchain wallets when I was first starting out with Bitcoin. Also on top of that because I was testing out different online wallets in order to find the one that would suit me the most I missed out on getting a lot of CLAMS because I didn't keep the login details for the different websites I had registrations at :D It's not such a big loss I have to admit but it left a sour taste in my mouth and nowadays I am taking a proper care of all my important login details by using a good password manager. You never know when you will need to log in to some old Bitcoin wallet haha  ;)

Yes, there are many ways in which one can lose the bitcoins. Like Loan repayment not done. Someone scammed for Bitcoins, lost in gambling and the list goes on. If we see it in depth, we realize that the loss is due to our own negligence.

It depends on what you mean by lost. I've never been hacked and I've never lost Bitcoins by forgetting the passwords to my accounts/wallets. But I've lost a good amount by investing in altcoins and projects that turned out to be scams. That was a couple of years ago though, I not losing Bitcoins these days, lesson learned  :)

I've lost a ton of bitcoins on gambling, around 3 BTC in total. But now I don't gamble anymore. I only go for the promotions that sites give out which are pretty much guarantee wins.

I've also lost a private key that contained around 0.05 BTC in it... It was a paper wallet, probably threw it out as trash some day, lol.

That's pretty shitty man, I hope you reported that guy so he cannot scam more people on here. Also you should always look for reputable members with impeccable feedback scores when trading big amounts. If there is no one around just head over to LocalBitcoins, there are plenty of 1000+ traders (even a few 10,000+) who offer Skrill.

Hopefully everyone that did lose coins, managed to recover from it.

I never heard about case when someone lost bitcoin (for example by sending it to the wrong address) and then managed to receive it back.
Cases like these simply aren't happening. If you mean someone - managed to recover bitcoin - there is only one solution - he earned bitcoin again - no received it back.

While exchanging or trading, there are several users who keep losing their bitcoins as they get scammed. I myself lost 0.15 BTC due to a fraudster and 0.03 BTC for a task that I completed in December. I fortunately never invested in ay project/hyip/gambling website to lose more coins.

I have made bad alt investments and lost BTC. I guess there are many who have lost much more so I feel for them.

I'm really glad that I haven't lost a single Bitcent so far. But a few times I was really lucky, withdrawing my coins from a site that shortly after went into "hacked" mode. These experiences have significantly confirmed my already cautious stance towards dealing with Bitcoin.

Although I've comparatively few to loose, I've switched to storing 95% of my "Bitcoin wealth" as secure offline paper wallets. I also stopped my experimental investing in Bitcoin projects, because I came to realize that the potential risks are much higher than the potential benefits. Now I'm primarily just hodling on to my tiny stash. Now I'm feeling very calm and relaxed by knowing my coins are safe and just doing nothing... :D

ya.ya.yo!

I got scammed/conned out of 10BTC in 2012. I staked a guy for that amount in poker and the short story is that he disappeared with my coins never to be heard from again. At the time it was only around $120 US so I wasn't bothered too much. But thinking about it now and considering how much bitcoin is currently worth makes me Grrrrr...

From then on, my number one rule when it comes to gambling/poker/investing has become never, lend or stake anyone and never borrow or ask for a stake from anyone.

Just as Polonius advised his son Laertes in Shakespeare's Hamlet, "Neither a borrower nor a lender be..."

Do you really depend on the passwords for you wallet ? That's not exactly a security measure ,you should probably back up your wallet keys and phrases the very first time you create an online account for a wallet. They'e never safe.

There is a bitcointalk post about lost coins.. can't be proven, but there are plenty of stories of unspendable coins.. I sent 0.1btc to a vanity address last year.. saved the wrong key and a reboot of my computer lost the key.
Do you still have access to the vanity address ?How did you manage to save the wrong key anyway ? Actually you could have recovered the key you know the data isn't deleted or over written until cleared from the cache.

I lost around 0.08 that day, and it was because I'm too greedy to buy a good steam wallet with low price.
The site (http://btc-market.net/) offered a low price Steam Wallet, and after I paid I never get the code.
That's not losing coins. That's being getting scammed. You lose coins to an address which no one has controls of or an address you on but lost access to it.Your case is different, being scammed does't count.

Half a bitcoin...

I decided I would memorize the passphrase.. wrote it down and burned the paper each night for a couple weeks then forgot about the coins...

found the wallet 3 months later...

attempted to figure out the passphrase for hours..

they are gone.

Always write down your passphrase and keep it safe.

Oh an cryptsy... fak... that was 2 bitcoins... *sigh*

Id highly reccomend mycelium wallet if you use an android phone. Your phones probably not the best place to store them but mycelium has a seed that you must write down so recovering your wallet is a doddle.

380 BTC that's a huge amount now at $700/BTC its $266,000!!! What happened?

Lucky are those people who buys btc at cheaper price. They are now smiling to the bank :)

I lost my bitcoin in some cloudmining site, I invest around a total of 0.3 BTC, the cloudmining site shutsdown with my remaining investment, i can say i received a return of around 0.07, the payout decrease as time goes by until it shutdown.   Another scenario is a hardrive failure, well its not that big, just around 0.03 so i let it go rather than fixing my HDD that cost more than what i lost inside it  :D

Definitely, I think the majority of bitcoiners have lost bitcoins in the past because there are so many casinos around. But this also proves how good bitcoin is, how convenient it is to access any merchant/company.

Probably lost around 0.2 BTC in total.

There are of course many people that is losing some Bitcoins and that is because you are making some mistakes so that will be not that bad.
But as you can see it will be now bad if you are losing coins because it will be more worth also now around this time.

I lost bitcoins in gambling and when it was my first time at trading altcoins. I almost lost 0.2btc from gambling and 0.05 from altcoin trading. I think all of us already lose some bitcoin in many different ways. Some are scammed by hyips or ponzis, and cloud-mining sites. It is not bad to lose some of it as it teaches us an important lesson to ourself and never repeat it again.

Of course people have lost bitcoins. In 2010 I threw out a server with a wallet.dat file containing 100 BTC that were CPU-mined while I was playing around with an early client. To those who weren't around back then the Bitcoin core client mined/generated coins by default in pristine 50 BTC blocks straight into your wallet.dat. I had installed a node on an old 8-core server just to play around before the server was decommissioned a few days later. I noticed it had mined the 2 blocks before shutting it downed for the last time and sending the drives off to be DoD3 wiped.

It was only the next year when I got serious with BTC and realized how much value I had thrown out.

Well fortunately I don't have any experience about losing coins in a general way like steal coins, private keys have been gone or any related.

But if we will divert this to gambling, I already made a loss but only for a little amount since Im not doing it regularly and even I do so only betting for a small amount.

gambling is far more worth than a ponzi scheme, by gambling at least we can win with using strategy and knowledge.

when the past I have also ever invest in the site ponzi, because the last 2-3 years there are still many laymen about the Ponzi scheme. but this time the forum has been intensively to tell for not investing in ponzi site. but if they still do, they must bear the risks are great and do not complain.

People are of course making mistakes with Bitcoin and that would be not that bad because you can learn a lot if you are making mistakes because you will do next time better.
But many people are now holding their coins and wait for the right moment to sell it and that is nice

I was newbie at the beginning and didn't know how exactly bitcoin works and i was scammed for $50 (can't remember the exact amount, it was few years before). How i was scammed was that i sent first the money and then expected to get a digital item(CD key) so i tried to chargeback i thought that it was like paypal but once bitcoin are moved they can't get back. Being scammed is a good lesson to secure and protect your money and dealing in a safer way in the future.

I think it is inevitable to lose from it because we all try the differrent ways to earn bitcoin and two of them is gambling and investment sites which are a really big risk to put your money. We are attracted at investment sites because they offer a big amount of return from our investment in a short amount of time. And gambling as we all know that no one wins from it.

The good thing about doing these things is just that, you never make the same mistake twice. I never keep much on exchanges at all (next to nothing) and i always backup my wallets. Apart from that , the main thing you need to keep an eye out is for the scams which are everywhere.

I lost about 65 USD in bitcoin in September 2014 when I was using the blockchain.info wallet, old version hackers stole my coins although I had 2fa, maybe with some keylogger they got me, was using Windows back at that time. I have switched to Electrum since then and never looked back, not lost a single cent since the start of using Electrum.

However I have to say the new legacy blockchain wallet has added a substantial amount of security to its wallet, being HD with a Seed, 2FA, Mobile code, and Email verifying and I have one of this new wallet for testing purposes only, this new one so far so good, but is because I have also upgraded my knowledge in bitcoin and general PC security thanks to this forum.

How, and how much did you manage to lose?

We should manege it when we get lose, because everyone have face the lose, but everyone's way to get the lose is different, and also the way of manege it different. But in bitcoin, truly i have not a lot of lose, but sometime, but only in gambling. In Gambling i can't earn it more but i can  manege it, and signature campaign always help me.
Almost all people are experiencing loses because its normal to be lose in gambling because its gambling they are made gambling to give entertainment not to give people to win and get money for free..
Thats why many business man are success in gambling site..

I never lost any BTC due to scam, no one steal it from me either and I am very cautious about where I deposit my money.
I have seen so many too good to be true services, investing options and blatant scam attempts that I become very incredulous.

The closest I was to losing my wallet is when one of my devices was infected with ransomware CryptoWall.

Yup that is a fact and most people have already gotten the loss or defeat. This is a risk we have to accept even though we do not want to accept it, so do gambling well in order to get maximum results. Yeah she can succeed because he is the owner of gambling sites.

The only thing we need to keep in mind is that house always wins, everyone has lost their coins in gambling which has made the owners of the site richest person.

I did loose many times in gambling but at that time price of bitcoin was very low so it was affordable, but at this stage we cannot make the same mistake to put money in gambling as price is high now.

coins having low value back in the days doesn't really matter since 1btc is and will always be 1btc. if you look back at how it is right now, then the value will be much higher of course. gambling in general is bad. the house always wins in the long run.

Exactly gambling will make only owners of the sites richer and it will take away money from users like us and we will be left with nothing in hands at the end of the day.

I see most of the losses are here in gambling sites only, Even we all are doing investment and trading but we all get lose only in gambling, why?
Because we can't play gambling or we can control our-self, but i realize gambling is more lose able thing instead of others like trading and investment.

Gambling is the only place where you loose more and earn less and there is no guaranteed that you will earn from there and that is true that majority of us have lost our coins in gambling.

In actually, gambling is the biggest motivation who drive people to buy Bitcoin, gambling industry has improved a lot under the effect of Bitcoin, because Bitcoin has provided anonymous and fast payment method, and considering the high number of Bitcoin Casinos, everyone is able to gamble and bet on sports matches using Bitcoin.

That's true, many people are buying bitcoins so that they can use them in gambling as bitcoin has made their gambling addiction easier as it gives them high level of privacy without any involvement of third party.

I still don't understand why you would use bitcoin to gamble. The only aspect is privacy, who cares? Just go to a casino and it'll be fine. The worst they'll do is ask you for ID verification.

Yeah if we loose in gambling then we loose everything at once and there is no chance to recover them, but in trading you always have an opportunity to recover your loss in next trade.

Apart from gambling losses whcih shouldn't be taken into account I guess, I've lost around 0.04 BTC when a dice site had just disappeared I don't remember the name of the site now. A part of that money was my winnings on the site but more than a half was what I deposited there.

They ran away with people's money because their target of scamming people was achieved and that was their main intention and most of the people have lost their money in those scams.

As he  said  their intention is to collect sufficient amount of bitcoin from their  investors and when they achieve the decent amount  then they would  run away for sure. I don't think this is what OP meant, losing Bitcoins in gambling is not the same as getting coins stolen or being scammed.
You're prepared to lose when you engage in gambling, at least you should be.

I'm lucky enough to have never been scammed and I've not had any coins on an exchange that went down with all funds.

I have my bitcoin lost when I invest in cloudmining.  The operation seems legit that time, the first three weeks is doing fine, but in the later weeks, the payout is not coming out until the company shut down.  Well, I never learned and invested in some cloud mining that turned out to be a true scam.  Lol, I lost my investment of bitcoin there of course.

Everybody who did gamble, trade or invest in shady activities like cloud mining for sure have lost bitcoins at least 1 time. The problem is that bitcoin is so (don't know how to say) sexy that it makes you things you don't want to do normally. For example buying a premium porn movie, making a bet, and all this kind of things that makes you lose your coins , some lost are in a good way (when you are buying something, maybe it's not a loss at all) but some lost are really bad , i.e gambling.

I've lost about 0.02+ (copay wallet. I'd backup, still i cannot recover) + 0.006 (multibit, Don't have backup). Because of HDD failure and another 0.006BTC lost due to a pendrive lost where i kept my backup! That's all i've ever lost.

i have lost a highest of 0.25btc till now but if i see on total then i have lost upto 2btc till now from the day i started using btc its a huge amount but thats all worth now because those mistakes taught me to stay aways from some stuffs like ponzies and gambling
Yeah you should stAy away from ponzi and gambling. You will lose your money in a blink of an eye. I used to invest in ponzi and got scammed for many times. And then I realized i can never make money by those ponzi scammers. So I decided to work and work with my job to earn bitcoin.

Hard and honest work will always give you good returns no doubt the process would be slow but it will give you sure shot income and earning it slowly is always better then loosing money.

That is a bad sign better to stop since the price is increasing slowly and i think just play that you can afford to lose. ponzi is not working anymore almost all are scam better to stay away from them.. if you have a plan to make a good profit with bitcoin better to collect more bitcoins and stay holding it for a long time and sell them for a right time.

Seems that most people here are not doing well in gambling,I've lost only a few when playing dice but I won much more with trading  ;D
Fortunately, I never lost or got stolen any Bitcoins from my wallet cause I am always very careful with my money I use cold storage to keep them safe,I never deal with people who I don't trust,I never visit shady sites and I am always double checking before I send money.

Yeah right if you can stay away in gambling you will not lose anymore instead focus in earnings so that you can save more bitcoins and if you can hold it for a long time you can gain a good profit if you can sell your bitcoin in the right time..

yes I often lose at gambling and losing in gambling will never recover.

then I lose on trading and it's easy to recover it for me, but it certainly takes time.

Yes even I never invested my bitcoin anywhere, in that case I was lucky that I didn't loose anything there but have lost with my own mistakes many times in gambling.
I've been losing money for some sites to scam, yeah I've been investing in various investment sites such as gaming, cloudmining and so forth,
they will all be a scam before I get ROI, oh it really pisses me off

Yeah its really painful to loose our hard earned coins to the scammers and everyone of us would have committed that mistake at least once in a life to invest at a wrong place.

I have lost Bitcoin before because of gambling and I suggest that you do not spend to much of your money on gambling because in the end you are going to regret it.
Now when to stop before it is to late and you have lost everything.

this is not surprising at all.

gambling sites have to earn money somehow, and if you really think about it you see that these sites earn only when the players lose so in other words the players have to lose in order for the site (house) to win.

besides most people here who are gambling enthusiastically think gambling is an investment which can make them rich if they try real hard!!

Yeah, I have lost bitcoin before. My first experience was when I first know about bitcoin. I bought bitcoin and put it on doubler site. Unfortunately, that site turned out to be scam. Though the amount wasn't that much but it still made me regret. So I don't trust any doubler site since then.

Genisis mining have hardwares but they are giving so low roi for their investors and i think the long month years profit is to long for us and actually if we invest it to other things like finding good ico well actually we can surely earn with that and possiblt we could get more profit from the bunos, cloudmining investment even if they have real hardwares are not worth it for now since they are ponzi/scam and i already experience being victimize for that kind of modus/scheme.

In those cloud mining sites , there are maintenance fee will be cut off from your earning everyday and cuz we're have been in halving day so the reward also cut off to 12.5 where the previous is 25 btc and most likely your contract would be ended early without passed the ROI . Just stay away , for those some kind of cloud mining even they're have hardware proof we don't know where they gets a picture maybe from google Image or edited itself.

I've never lost Bitcoins before because I got scammed by someone when having a deal or a trade. I also never lost Bitcoins because I wasn't careful when sending so I sent it to the wrong address. The only time that I lost Bitcoins was from investing in HYIP sites. I got so lazy and wanted to earn money without that much work so I invested in HYIP sites. That was a mistake. I also lost some Bitcoins in gambling.

Oh i did it twice, I'm so disappointed till now. it so heart breaking, the bitcoin that I have been working for so many days has been gone so easily.
That's why, I don't trust any hyip programs now. They made me realize that earning so easily can be harm so hardly. That's a life lesson.
There comes a time, that I lost my interest with bitcoin because of that, but look at me now, I'm back and earning step by step and even little amount because that little amount  can be a big amount someday, because every big amount comes with a little. And it is better to reap what you sow, harvest all the things that you had worked hard for.

Now Im still losing bitcoin due to trading loss but it doesn't mean Im experiencing it on regular basis. Already built a good trading experience today and loss is part of trading journey.

it is common to lose at gambling, because no one has never lost at gambling.
because this is our fault to take a risk on gambling and to recover the gambling is very difficult.
as you trade, it will also lose. however I think it is easier to recover on the trade. because the price could still rise so we would not lose everything in an instant.

I seldom gamble but when I gamble I often win.  One of the thing that make me lose bitcoin is the wrong decision on trading.  Patience with a mixture of greed makes me end up bag-holding worthless coins which are I see funny.  But well that is part of my wrong decision that is trying to correct for me to avoid losing bitcoin.

I lost bitcoin once. It was a long time ago when I met bitcoin for the first time. I had some satoshi in blockchain and didnt realize that my account was vulnerable to theft. I use very weak password and never put 2fa in it. Someone got an access to my wallet address and withdrew it. He also got my cex.io password but fortunately by default that site forced me to use 2fa so the hacker cant steal my money on that site.

Its a big amount to be lost , but where or why did you lost it ? There's a big difference in lost and lose cause i read some replies they lost on gambling i think thats not lost its a lose amounts.

Losing that 2btc amount is so depressing especially if you do hard work in bitcoins to earn it even you invest and you are rich status in life .

As i am lost only on scams but its too small amounts when i am starting on bitcoins .

Mostly the mistakes that we do are in the early stages when we first learned about bitcoin and how it works.

I have lost bitcoin one or few times maximum can't remember well but how I lost them was that I forgot the password of the freebitcoin faucet.

Lost also the email access don't know how maybe my pc was infected few years back but the amount wasn't large but it worth a lot to me at that time because faucets are very time consuming.

and the funny part is that i am ok with it, because i have had fun playing the games and also the important part of it is that i did not lose more than i was planning to lose.

For 'LOST', due to corrupted wallet, hardware failure, no wallet backups, then thankfully,
I haven't encountered a loss in that area.

For 'LOST', in thefts, scams, schemes, and such, again, I have luckily managed to avoid those.
This is because I don't involve myself on sketchy, shady and otherwise unreal schemes. I stay away.

Now for 'LOST', due to trading and gambling. Well. I've managed to make a bit with trading in the past.(But I no longer trade)
and for Gambling, That is my biggest source of losses. There were wins, but probably more losses.(Typical)

I lost about 0.8 BTC between January and April last year through gambling but I was a novice and didn't know much about management regarding betting so I fell prey to the bookies. In general I wouldn't say I lost because all that I lost I won them back with the recent pump.

I lost 0.003 on Christmas Eve through sports betting. Prior to that day I did spend a lot of time faucetting because I was new to this community and wanted to get as much bitcoins as I can but I ended up losing all of them. I'll be starting work next week and I hope I could do some more faucets before then.

How, and how much did you manage to lose?

Unfortunately I've been there and panicked too, first i lost access to my freewallet back in 2020, it had about 3.8BTC in it. I regained access luckily, found my login information in my dropbox account on a day i was looking for a particular document then boom i saw the login details. To make the story worst, a few months after i got introduced to an investment platform through an online advertisement where i could double the bitcoin in my wallet so i decided to give it a try, that was when i first knew about Bitcoin scam, all the money in my wallet was gone after i signed up with them.

I filed a police report but it ended up a futile effort. A friend who knows more about crypto than i do then adviced me to report my case to Vaultech Recovery Services so they could help me get my money back, at that point i was helpless so i reached out to them through  vaultechservices @ protonmail . com , i provided the necessary information they requested for about the scam company and the transaction details. Eventually i got more than half of my money back after paying some fees. The crypto world is a minefield, you better watch where you step or it might be too late to regret. I'm never touching anything crypto again!

The amount is not important, but I can say that I lost a very valuable amount of money for me. People experience them. You learn to win as you lose.

If you invest at the wrong time, you will become a loser. Before investing in the market you need to gain good knowledge about the market and you need to have a lot of patience. You should always wait for the market to come down and then invest. The lower the price you can buy, the more profitable you will be.But if you buy the highest price, you will wear it at loss . So first you know about the way to invest then invest. Then you won't wear at loss so much.

The experience is not funny though. Losing bitcoin as a result of wrong market and trading calculations is a kind of feelings I do not want anybody to experience. I have had friends whose wallets were hacked of btc which is not funny. These hacks took place at at December 2018 and 2019. It was a terrible experience and period for them as their whole investment we're all gone. They still can not explain how it happened if really their wallets were mirror. I enquired from them to know if really they linked their wallets online but they still can not explain. I myself out of inexperience I lost my btc while conducting transfer from one wallet to another years back when I got onboard blockchain newly couple with poor timing and wrong market calculations, I have lost bitcoin numerous times in the past and that has served as a lesson to me which I would not forget in a hurry.

Your question is not complete but I will say that loosing Bitcoin and crypto is a part of life if you are a trader. I have lost my money and that was very hurtful to me.
First time I lost money as it was 2017 when I lost 2 Ethereum in a single time and it was very very exhausting for me and I cannot bear that I can loose such hard Money. After that I lost almost 1500 Dollars in 2021 in May. And it broke my heart and I tried to quit but now I am able to do something good and now in future I might be able to earn something hefty money.

Here is a story where someone lost 7500 bitcoins.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/nov/27/hard-drive-bitcoin-landfill-site
This story has been featured a number of times that it has become a classic cautionary tale amongst us bitcoin enthusiasts over the years. Basically warning people to always be mindful of where you store your assets and to never be complacent especially when it is hard-earned assets like your bitcoins that is at stake. I myself want to root for the guy, but it's been years already and there's almost always a good chance the HDD is already compacted and gone for good. Would highly suggest he move on at this point if he's still actively looking for it.

Losing bitcoin could've happened with every user atleast once.  Most of the time this happens through scammers. When we're new to the market we easily fall to the scammers as we don't know much about the market as well as the risks. In this way I've lost bitcoin on untrusted trading platform as well as on using a wallet that scammed the funds and ran away.

I have been deceived by others about Bitcoin, that is, someone in the wallet will send you coins with an address you often use, and then you will mistakenly think that this familiar address is your own, but in fact that address is not yours at all. The letters are very similar, but still different.

That's quite funny as i have never ever lost any satoshi in my wallet ever but on the side, many many times have lost alts and forgotten where i stored them. Bitcoin losses are not affordable but for now, i think many of us are already holding or bearing the loss situations in bitcoin. But its worth waiting and maybe it won't last soon. Cycle moves keep in mind.

But I think this is very rare, whether through hacking or something else. but I'm sure this will be very impossible to happen if someone really keeps their assets in the safest point, and if this happens that someone loses Bitcoin this could be caused by fraud, I think this is very rare. and unless you are affected by platforms whose certainty is very unclear.

So far I have never lost any satoshi that I have stored well, Be it Bitcoin or Altcoin, the key is only one, you have to save it very well and remember the password of a Wallet, very simple way But very valuable. guaranteed safe. maybe what often happens is losing Bitcoin satoshis, or this Altcoin happens because of an error in a transaction, and forgetting to save it in which Wallet.

Luckily I didn't lose my bitcoins. I won't click on links from strangers. Every time I send to the other party's address, I will check both sides and confirm to the other party whether it is correct. I think you need to be serious and careful with money. Otherwise your money may be cheated by others. The scammers are now highly skilled. Don't trust the words of strangers easily.

Well explained. I mean people learn from their mistakes only. I have also lost some of my Bitcoins, actually I didn’t remember the exact amount but, around 4-5 years ago, I remember when I was transferring a little amount of Bitcoins to localbitcoins account, I sent it to wrong address. My pc was probably infected for which I made this mistake. I copied the address and pasted it, but at the time of pasting, the address got slightly changed due to the malware and I lost my BTC after I sent them. Now everytime I make a transaction, I thoroughly check the address.

You lost it through your own fault, which means you can't get it back unless the recipient is very wholesome, in which case he or she will return it, but mostly not, so it was lost and gone forever in your wallet. That is why you should double check it before sending it, but my question is: why are you mistakenly sending it to the wrong address? Do you type or write the address and don't copy and paste it? or you just sent it while you were drunk? since it is difficult to send it to an address that you don't own.

Yeah I've lost money and in a very sick way which I always have regret everytime I remember it.
Crypto generally is a very risky business and this I've come to attest to in a very hard way and I guess one if the things that contributed to my failure was the fact that I didn't take my time to learn the necessary does and don't of crypto before jumping into it and that took a big turn on me and I hard to pay with hard earned money.
I lost over $200 and then the money was intended for my rent and the lost had a very great impact on me but it gave me the courage to follow up more now.

How, and how much did you manage to lose?

Oh yeah. I have lost a lot. I am not sure how much but when I first got into Bitcoin, I was sending back and forth between a couple of my own wallets to learn how it works and I lost like $10 worth which is like .1 BTC or something. I have also lost some by locking myself out of paper wallets using the BIP 38 encryption.

I have learned all of my lessons and now I know that the best way is to keep things simple and have lots of backups. Experiment with small amounts and don't do anything stupid like messing with lots of complexity.

Keep it simple until you have a larger stack and really know what you're doing.

I don't really know how much I have lost but I do remember losing Bitcoin or crypto because of losing my private key.
If we would also consider the amount that has been lost due to scam then there would be huge amount for it.
I hate to recall those memories but they are part of the past and they are the best lesson that I've had.
Because of those event I learn some valuable lesson to always save your private keys and don't easily trust any investment.

I don’t have the worry of being afraid of losing at all, not just because I have to be cautious about money, mainly because I can’t buy bitcoins yet, so scammers won’t come to cheat my assets.

It mustn't be Bitcoin at all times at time paper fiat currencies are lost and you can't forgive your self for being so careless.

Since it's something of value to everyone it is sure going to hurt the person it's almost as someone lossing his family friend.
I loss some though but alot of Bitcoin has also been lost to exchanges lately both long term holders and pensioners and holiday planners
That alone shouldn't sound good, have you also lost any of your bitcoin share yours

Bitcoin scam is common in today's space and I'm usually used to it and able to detect the scammed coins in the market. The entire market is all about information and getting the recommendable tools for projects available. Losing bitcoin to scammers presently is either a big mistake or ignorant of the right information, so I blamed the victims for not gathering solid information and also their greediness will lead them to been victims of malicious scammed projects in the space.

just like you I have also lost altcoins in my wallet, as far as I remember that incident was in 2017 when the token token airdrop boom, At that time I had some ETH and various kinds of tokens in my wallet, for some reason suddenly eth and tokens could switch to another wallet in a matter of seconds, I guess because I clicked on a phissing site link while taking part in the airdrop and that's a bitter memory that served as a lesson for me.

if I lose btc, I have never experienced it because I keep btc on a different tablet/laptop so I never open the computer on other sites except to only see btc price movements in trusted markets like binance.

indeed to prevent this by storing btc in a wallet that we have the key and never trust third parties such as exchange.

Well no, nobody has ever lost Bitcoins before. They may have had them stolen or they lost their key, but lost? Nope. Those coins are exactly where they were put last. :P And before you ask, yes, I have lost a key before but the amount of coin was very negligible. So suffice it to say, I have lost maybe... 200 USD worth in Bitcoin which would be worth around 2k or more at today's price.

Lesson learned: do not lose keys.

This comes back to myself it seems when it comes to scammers because if we are careful then things like this will not happen, I have been in crypto for several years, especially in bitcoin but until now I have never felt that way because I have always taken good care of myself regardless of seed or my portfolio stuff. I don't want something like this to happen so I'm more careful with it, while maybe some of us have still lost because of this, then chances are you still haven't done your best in guarding your wallet.
