LoyceV's Legendary Small-scale 10 Month 10 Person 10 Altcoin Investment Experiment I want to try something new, just for fun: 10 people each put 0.01 BTC ($18.80 now) in a pot, for which I buy 10 different altcoins. Every participant can choose one altcoin to buy. After the tenth person joined, I'll buy the altcoins at bittrex.com. 10 months later I'll sell everything, and return the pot equally (after fees taken by Bittrex and miners) to all participants. Every month I'll give an update here of the current values. I would prefer to create a new Bittrex account just for this, but since they're implementing KYC, an anonymous account might not work anymore 10 months from now. So I use my existing account. After joining, you agree to stay in until the 10 months have passed. You also agree to any altcoin the other participants pick. Note that the altcoins have to be available at Bittrex. Also note that you can lose (most of) your 0.01 BTC, but we can hope it goes up. Update (September 26, 2017): It took 10 weeks for 10 people to join. I don't expect it, but it has happened with other exchanges in the past. If this happens, your money is gone, just like my money. That's why I limit this thread to 0.01 BTC per person, consider it play money. 0.01 BTC of an altcoin can drop lower than 0.0005 BTC value, which is too low to sell it on Bittrex. Small bump in the road: My browser's autofill turned the 0.01 for Waves into 0.01086598. That means I got 0.7434546 Waves too much, I sold them again. Some orders were filled at different rates, I tried to make up for that in the last buy, but overlooked the 952 satoshi from XMR that I didn't use. I can't buy for that low amount, so I'll neglect the difference. Later addition: I now remember I had some Eth-dust left on Bittrex, that makes up for the 952 sat. Bittrex takes 0.25% fee on all trades. Note: it is a pity that we didn't get to buy at today's bargain prices. But 10 months is a long time, can't wait to see the results. Off the top of my head: Bittrex can delist a certain altcoin if it's no longer worth anything. I keep the altcoins on Bittrex. Bittrex can disappear. I don't expect it, but it has happened with other exchanges in the past. If this happens, your money is gone, just like my money. That's why I limit this thread to 0.01 BTC per person, consider it play money. Quote 0.01 BTC of an altcoin can drop lower than 0.0005 BTC value, which is too low to sell it on Bittrex. I have had the same (temporary) issues across several exchanges, but these seem to go away very quickly if you always go for full enhanced verified status (or whatever they're called on whichever platform). I travel a lot and don't always reside in the same place but find that using my permanent address, with a regular bill and a very old verified bank account works. My trust in any of these exchanges can't be any lower, but since I still use them as well (generally the only place I can buy alts easily)... the devil you got to live with I guess. I probably won't be too mad if worst-case scenario happened (you lose access to your Bittrex), but maybe just confirm with the others. I'm glad my pick (Byteball GBYTE) is in profit again, but in retrospect (after 3 months) I should have picked my other favourite altcoin: On October 4, 1 XLM (Stellar Lumens) was worth about 0.00000290BTC. 0.01BTC would have bought 3448 XLM. One XLM is now worth 0.00006135BTC, which means this would now have been worth 0.2115BTC. The big winner in the past month is XRP, which went up about 10-fold and is now the best performing altcoin in this experiment. It has reached more than half of Bitcoin's market cap. In general, I assume altcoins pump&dump against Bitcoin, which means most money flows in and out of Bitcoin, as Bitcoin moves in the other direction away from the pumped coin. If my theory is correct, I don't think XRP can go up much more: if it would be much bigger than Bitcoin, there isn't much money left to pump into the coin. I'm very curious to see if XRP can keep it's value in the coming months. The All-time graph (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ripple/) shows a typical pump&dump pattern. Similarly, if one or more of the participants has one of the alt coins in the latest round they could provide a part public key, have a vanity wallet generated (which is held by the escrow) and at the end of the round the generated key is sent to them to send the alt coin to Loyce's exchange address (eg Cryptopia) for that alt coin who will then sell up and divvy out the funds. The loss to the group if that person walks away with the altcoins is they have only received their own share back * - if Loyce doesn't receive their alt coins held then they don't get a cut of the rest of the group. QED. * and we get to splash the Red Paint TM on their Trust Wall Loyce would be buying the alt coins on an exchange, so he wouldn't be sending any alt coins to an address unless he was satisfied, the protections were in place ( part pub key and escrow holding part secret key etc) For practicality sake, only one alt coin can be held by one participant per round. When I joined this experiment I thought it would be a fun bet to make, but I realize it is just that - a bet. I was thinking of simply reserving say 50% of the coins on an order at about 100% of the price bought and forgetting it for the entire duration. It is an extra step but would possibly take advantage of spikes in altseason, not uncommon as has happened at least twice to some of my "for fun alts". But yeah, leaving funds on the exchange is always an unacceptable risk if you're looking at the same 10-month period. I wouldn't go after you if anything happened to the wallet/exchange, though I suspect others might not be as nonchalant. Still looking forward to joining all the same. I must admit I forgot all about Aug 4th, but I just noticed now the 0.005+ BTC or so to my wallet came and I instantly knew where it came from. Like billgator said, positive experience to be gained. I'm sure we all knew the risk of alts, and personally am prepared to lose everything in an experiment. As OgNasty says too, we generally know what to expect with USD gains and BTC losses. Just a shame about the timing. But we're all free to go on and buy our chosen alts and hold on to those anyway (which is probably what I'll do, beef up a few more PPC ;)

I think I'm a bit concerned about the fixed term for the investment. Crypto is so volatile, that I think one needs to maintain flexiblity to take advantage of market movements. I'd also like to be able to choose between different risk:reward ratios, and this is not possible with a single portfolio.

This section of the forum is probably a little quiet, even I forget to check in for weeks, but entertainment value quite high as you can see;) We actually started a second round which you can follow here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4597341.80)... there's definitely been demand for it. I don't envy Loyce for having to keep track of everything, even if there's a bit more automation now in the 2nd round. My new pick isn't doing too well either. It'll probably be replicated by someone else, if not a 3rd concurrent round. There's just something about watching your pick (fail to) perform against others. Some competitive element maybe?
