Title: Do you actually understand Ethereum?
Post by: TimtheYoutuber on January 01, 2018, 09:38:47 PM
If you dont understand Ethereum, check out my free article Ethereum 101 (http://www.goo.gl/6Cqt1g)

Most people really dont understand Ethereum, which is going to be damaging to the market. I have heard friends and have seen posts even on here with people who are investing that dont even understand smart contracts, proof of stake etc

Did you know their are 2 Casper's?

When you invest in a coin, how much time do you spend researching it? I normally spend at least 3 hours learning everything I can from it before I attempt to make an investment of even $1. It is important to understand the coin from a general level, and if you can understand it from a technical level that is even better.

Kinda this is how many people value the coin, most of them just skim through with decision being less than 3hours.... because they form opinion of other people, who in fact are looking to promote their coin because they all want to take profit at end thats why it could be seen as ponzi specially for many shitcoins out there. Or for instance you look some coin say like "we are private coin" and people will buy without taking their time to even read the whitepaper.

Thank you for sharing this course I will defenetly check it out. I understand basci concepts behind ethereum but it will be worth it at least if some this course point out some valid information for me again to understand or even if I learn something new. Thanks for sharing.

I will put this video course https://www.udemy.com/your-first-decentralized-app/ which is free on Udemy for developers who want or are looking to develop smart contracts for ethereum network. It really gives nice overview of how to code so you can continue your first steps and your journey.

I also suspect that you are person behind these tutorials really appreciate that you are trying to raise awareness of cryptocurrency and because you are making these to introduce people to this new tech + courses are free :o!

This is a good work. I remember how I tried to understand ethereum. I read many articles and a lot of information before I uderstand what does it mean technically. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, I usually don't know much about technical aspect of coins and it is really hard to understand ethereum completely.

Literally the worst thing to do is base a decision off a an article that titles " X coin 100% rise, Moon, HODL". I love news sites and there are some legit ones, but you need to do the background research first. Some of the technology of the coins are not even really feasible, but it is easy to market to non developer people ( like myself ) so I like to gather information from many different sites that may even offer an opinion from a developer. After I have actually read the whitepaper myself.

If you have any questions you can always let me know :) I love helping the community and I see you are helping as well.

"Check out my free" Yes I am, and thank you very much I appreciate the comment.

It is sort of sad though that people really dont take the time to understand and read whitepapers ( although some may be long ) you can literally make hundreds of thousands if not millions on it.

This is a good work. I remember how I tried to understand ethereum. I read many articles and a lot of information before I uderstand what does it mean technically. Thanks for sharing.

I found it hard in the beginning because there are a lot of different aspects of ethereum, that are not all covered in most tutorials etc so I think the course helps people get the main information right away and then gives them a chance to reflect with the quiz. I appreciate the kind words, thanks.

I think a majority of today's digital currency investors are throwing blind money left right and centre. Just take a look at the John Mcafee scenario. What a circus of clowns he has for followers. I mean do people even know who this man is? He is a raging drug addict obsessed with anonymity who has been strongly accused of homicide in the past. Those accusations carry some very compelling evidence btw. But yet, masses of people are throwing large amounts of money into anything he says.

It's a great time for smart investors looking to carefully place there money in the market.

Exactly which is why I think we need some ICO standards, and I totally agree. People need to learn exactly what to look for in ICO's and actually put in the time to research

Instead of understanding the whole thing, i guess i only has like 30%+- of understanding on Ethereum

The Word "Blockchain" is already huge and technical to understand the framework and details.
Ethereum is much more than a Blockchain, it has Smart Contracts and it allows token to be built on top of its chain instead of Forking to create a new coin.

Less than an hour? I don't really take much time on understanding the whole thing but the first layer like what it does, does it has use case and is it feasible.

However for project that i invest, i guess more time will be spent :)

Yeah your absolutely spot on. Speaking of ICO's, I'd be interested in your opinion on this company I am currently looking to invest in. I have missed the pre-sale but I like what they are doing and think I might keep a very close on them. They are called BullToken. I don't have anything to do with them, I would just love your personal opinion on them.

They are  creating a community of ICO investors and basically implementing some standards into ICO's on a decentralised p2p basis.

Its an interesting subject, like do you think 30% of Ethereum is general or technical knowledge. To me, 30% means you understand transactions and a small knowledge of smart contracts and dapps from a general standpoint.

If you can learn everything in 1 hour then thats cool, I just find it hard to believe you understand everything in 1 hour. Every day the market changes and it changes quick, so you constantly have to research the new developments, while keeping an eye on the individual coins and their road maps.

Yeah I mean I skim through whitepapers etc and dont spend 1 hour, when I first look at a coin. This is too just find easily spotted scams so I dont waste more time etc. However if it passes my easy scam test, I will spend around 3 hours researching it and then possibly making an investment or just keeping it in my radar.

Good info Even i gone through same issue while trying understand ethereum and smart contracts even i spent weeks of time to understand and started experimenting with lots of fear and tension. But your article everything made easy .

Right away I find it upsetting they use the word "investor" in their promotional video. You are buying a token without any equity in the company, so I dont like there start already.

Let me continue diving in....

It doesnt sound like something I would buy tbh, because its like "Buy my token, and it will increase because we are profitable" However, you dont get an equity in the company, and so their profitability doesn't make a whole lot of sense to trickle down to a token holder. Yeah you can vote and thats cool, but this seems like another coin trying to pray on people that wanna be "entrepreneur investors". It really doesnt make a whole lot of sense for me to buy into it, and its not something I would recommend. You cant use the token for anything, from what I understand. And I read about 10 minutes of the whitepaper. I saw all the Karma stuff, and it doesnt look very good to me. I am more interested in tokens/coins/projects that are going to change the world. That doesnt seem world changing to me.

Actually i am new here so i dont understand how you did this so you have that state.
But as i know as trader or investor eventhough small trader, i only need profit. If etherium profitable then i will be investing in there.

Being a trader is something I am interested in, but not something I can allocate a lot of time to (such as your 3 hours). So what I do and what I'd recommend for others like me is to find some traders whose recommendations you believe in and who do their due diligence and then follow their advice and suggestions. In some cases, those traders may have actual analytical departments working behind their recommendations, which will do more work of better quality than an average individual can with three hours.

Yes, I think the whole cryptocurrency market is really a speculative market, and sometimes I even think it's a ponzi scheme, but it still doesn't affect the way we make money.

I only knew about ethereum that it is an open-source, public, blockchain-based distributed computing platform featuring smart contract (scripting) functionality. It provides a decentralized Turing-complete virtual machine, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which can execute scripts using an international network of public nodes. But since you shared about this ideas I have learned much now.

I don't think I know much about ETH, and I don't even know how the ETH's smart contract is used, but I know that it's a bull market and that investing in ETH can make me profitable.

If you dont actually understand it though, it brings a lot more problems and your risk management will be off.

Yeah man :) The more aware you are of what is going on in the market in general , and more specifically with the potential token/coin the better off you will be.

Taking the time to actually understand it is 100% worth it, I mean think about it. If you invest $1k and 5x your money and spend 5 hours really learning i. You made $800 an hour.

Thanks for sharing this thoughts and ideas I learned a lot of things about ethereum.

I posted a lot of different coin courses if you are interested in those. PM me if you need help.

If you cant allocate a lot of time, I would recommend investing smaller amounts. You can follow others, however it is best to really learn it yourself, but if you follow then you dont want to invest as much.

I don’t think that i completely understand the whole thing. You know, mostly it’s complicated and hard to understand whole details. But of course people should do more research & reading before invest in to anyhing.
Thanks for good info  :)

Nobody, except crypto experts, understand the whole concept of a given coin or projects. We know only the base things about them. The rest is much more complicated than we can ever guess. This is same for ethereum as well. Complicated to understand it.

It is important to understand the coin from a general level, and if you can understand it from a technical level that is even better.

It's not easy to understand Ethereum fully, it might take few years to understand. As far as i know it is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts, these contracts may be the several applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of fraud or third party interference.Ethereum is an open-source, public, blockchain-based distributed computing platform featuring smart contract functionality.

Actually, Ethereum have some aspects difficult to understand at conceptual level (but I admit that the first time I tried to understand the blockchain I was lost in fog :-) )
Btw, you can work with ethereum even if you don't understand completely the matter (I'm pretty sure that 90% of people don't understand at all money, but they can use it daily!)

It is quite complicated . But for now just learn about smart contract, gas price, sending and receiving tokens and if you can program bit, create your own customize tokens and sent to your friends, who knows  you can even make ICO of your dream startup from the tokens .

From my side and folks I have seen... Many don't even know what is cryptocurrencies... Or the Blockchain technology.  They only know there is something called bitcoin and etherium but the knowledge of the technology behind them is  lacking in many people.

Getting into crypto.. I had to study to know lots of things.

It my surprise you that many people haven't even read the original bitcoin whitepaper. That just goes how much people know about these things..

Once folks get into crypto because of the hype... They start asking questions like When Moon? When Lambo and other similar disturbing questions.. And If they don't see significant growth soon.... Scam is the next word....  Truly as someone said.. The latest people onboard the crypto community..some are toxic..

In summary... Folk need to learn how to be better in crypto.

I think the biggest problem for a new comer, is the feeling of being overwhelmed. If you already understand bitcoin, it can be an easier transition but still can be hard. Lots of new terms and technologies with Ethereum. Which is why I created the course in the OP, to put everything together in one area with lectures that you dont have to take all at once. Plus the quiz helps you comprehend what you learned.

It will certainly help you in the long run, because if you understand it you can make an evaluation of the coin. Only after you understand the coin and evaluate it yourself should you look at some of the popular people in the industry and hear what they have to say. Then you can compare and will do much better.

Ethereum is actually one of the most usefull projects. It is more than just a cryptocurrency. Bitcoin and most altcoins only function as cryptocurrencies. Ethereum's team describes it as the worlds smart computer. It has smart contracts and many other tokens are also based on Ethereum's platform.

It has so many uses.

You can perform credible transactions without any third party. You can create complex platforms and systems on top of Ethereum.

ETH based smart contract projects are most efficient support of ethereum market. There are many erc20 tokens have been launched and gas price also very little. This is most attractive part of bitcoin and other all crypto market.
If all the Cryptos survived with the same value week an before also fine for me to invest and make money in different alts.
I expected ETH may touch the 1800 USD before end of this year but crypto market dumps made me heavy heart about it.

me either. For Ethereum professional technology I do not understand. Because that involves a field. And understand it very difficult. I think I know that Ethereum is enough. No need to learn the same professional stuff as a scholar.

There is never a greater time to understand it than now :) If you click the link in the OP you will find a Medium Post I wrote discussing Ethereum.

Understanding cryptocurrencies is a must for anyone who wants to be involved with such industry and eth is indeed one of the most fascinating coins despite it being always the second one on the list always back to back with bitcoin , it is having a rush time scaling but will always be a sure currency to invest in .

It sounds logic to read a lot of information before buying Ethereum. However, I don't have time to read everything, it is too much, so I just follow the market. You know what they say: the market is always right.

However if you just follow the market, you wont really have a good understanding of why things are the way that they are. Better to research, and less risky if you do. However if you just wanna dive into cryptocurrency and assume the most risk generally, then that is okay as well.

I think 90% of the people in crypto now doesn't know what exactly they are buying and how they work and that is very worrisome.

Naturally, a person is just paying attention to profit. Sometimes do not pay attention to risks and what is used as material for investment. Without studying and getting to know more about the investment.

This is why so many people end up losing money. Someone needs to lose money for us to make money.

I think that such a question can be asked about any currency. A huge number of people especially now are trying simply to speculate exchange rates and are not interested in what is behind them. I hope that similar educational projects will appear more.

The fact is that the huge popularity of crypto-currencies for today is due only to the strong ability to earn money. Few people understand the obvious opportunities or advantages of crypto currency. But this is not the fault of the people themselves, but of those countries and governments that have brought peoples to the point that they are dragging out a miserable existence and are trying to earn wherever they can. I believe that Bitcoin and all of the Crypto currency gives a very good and positive opportunity for every user of the crypto currency to improve their financial condition and improve the lives of their families.

The features of eth is much that you can't understand all...

I tried to do more research about it...

Its quite a pity that not everyone who invest in crypto actually understands the technology behind it. I saw today that an airport in Brisbane would be accepting crypto currencies as payment in its terminal. that alone is news for some people to get into crypto and start throwing money around. But come on, the blind followers who normally or naturally fall off the rail.

I think the recent correction in crypto  is also attributed to the blind investors who throw their money around anyhow.

folks should learn about the technology and how it would impact lives.

In fact, no coin is stable now, but this is how crypto market works: dynamically and changeable.
It has lower transaction cost than BTC, it is an advantage.

Ethereum is a platform. It is an open source platform, which exists to build and distribute decentralised applications. These decentralised apps are known as “dapps”, and many are excited but the potential they offer. The value of the Ethereum platform increases as more apps are written for it.

Fully agree. ETH is not intended to be as BTC it is more platform for dApps.

If you are a long term holder of a coin you can do a background research about the coin and know what it is created and if it is worth your investment. But if you are a day trader Do You Really Need That? I don't think so, if you know how fast markets move by the time you will spend time and research and come back a position might be closed for you to enter. So in my own opinion, Day traders doesn't need research about the coin rather they should research upcoming news about the coin.

Agreed. If you are "investing" for a long hold, then it's essential to understand what the unique attributes of your coin are.

But for day trading, why even do it in cryptos? The standard markets (SP500, forex, futures) are much more liquid and efficient for that. If you don't care about the underlying, then just open a futures account at a brokerage and day trade those.

Ethereum is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts: applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third-party interference.

These apps run on a custom built blockchain, an enormously powerful shared global infrastructure that can move value around and represent the ownership of property.
and I still learn a lot about the ethereum itself. that's my explanation.

I am understand also too about the etherium, Actually i just sometime in what the etherium uses and how it works and the security of our token if we need to deposit our token on there. So that's why i really like etherium and easy to use.

I understand it partially, not totally since it's very complicated. My job is not understanding it but my job is understanding the market value of the ethereum. If we look into the thing from more realistic vision.

That’s a big problem we share as community. We all invest in something but we do it without searching and analyzing it deeply. We just hear that coin will moon from a friend or even from a Twitter post of a stranger and we directly jump in it. That’s too risky from my point of view. We should know what we are investing in.

This is very true, however, a lot of other things are being developed. If it was only being used as a platform to create ICO's it wouldn't be successful in the future. Right now the price is reflecting the speculative future of the other implementations. We can only hope other things are added and successful.

Nah---- Many of us was studying on how to earn ETH and how to make this coin more useful in their daily life, rather than researching its background and how does it grow, since you will know it someday. An honest answer.

ETH is indeed one of the best coin amongst all other coins who are there in the world of crypto currencies and is considered as one of the best coin when it comes to that of trading or short term investment of money.

It is though not an easy thing to understand any of the coin and it actually requires lot of efforts and hard work to know well about any crypto coin. You should only invest your money once you have some fair idea about that coin.

I think it is hard for me to do that. I only spend severl hours to make the research but I will make a change in the near future.

Honestly i know their concepts and technology roughly and how its network could potentially impact the cryptocurrency industry, still technically how really solidity works and executing those contract are yet too much for me. I might just evaluating Ethereum based on its current usability, popularity on the market, maybe that's sufficient for just a simple trader.

It is indeed sufficient for a simple trader to know such things , since it's main interest is winning money and his knowledge doesn't necessarily needs to contain all the technical stuff . Yet knowing the Blockchain technologie and smart contracts 101s is a must since that can drastically control the future / usability of any cryptocurrency and affect it's longevity and use cases .
At least knowing how does it work , what smart contracts and which teams are behind it is a must , even what pools are controlling it and the ERC20 tokens concept that makes Ethereum for example a coin that'll always have demand .
Such infos could make you have a much better evaluation of the coin and know what strategy of trading or holding you'll take in consideration when dealing with .

Ethereum is not an institution. It is an underlying system that can realize smart contracts and open source in the blockchain. From the birth of Ethereum to May 2017, there are more than 200 ethers in the world in just 3 and a half years. Square application was born. Ethereum is a platform and a programming language that enables developers to build and publish next-generation distributed applications. Ethereum can be used to program, decentralize, guarantee and trade anything: voting, domain names, financial exchanges, crowdfunding, company management, contracts and most agreements, intellectual property, and smart assets that benefit from hardware integration.

Ethereum is a blockchain-based decentralized platform on which decentralized applications (Dapps) can be built.
Remember, blockchain is the structure the vast majority of cryptocurrencies run on. It’s a database with no central server that keeps track of every transaction and exchange.
We’ll jump into decentralized apps—referred to as dapps–in greater detail later, but just know they are applications that serve a certain purpose to a user. Fasten your seatbelts, some of these dapps are amazing.
Ethereum’s appeal is that it is built in a way that enables developers to create smart contracts. Smart contracts are scripts that automatically execute tasks when certain conditions are met. For example, a smart contract could technically say, “pay Jane $10 if she submits a 1000 word article on goats by September 15, 2018,” and it would pay Jane once the conditions are met.

Yet, in the event that you are an informal investor Do You Really Need That? I don't think in this way, on the off chance that you know how quick markets move when you will invest energy and research and return a position may be shut for you to enter. So as I would see it, Day dealers needn't bother with look into about the coin rather they should explore forthcoming news about the coin.

Yes, lately the speed of ethereum transactions has slowed down. I think the blockchain is designed not yet quite scalable, to handle massive traffic from the system which is there. So that in its utilization, it becomes uncomfortable especially for those who are accustomed to using it.

knowing when prices are high so seeing low prices we panic and fear because it falls dramatically. but we can see people, they still believe and trust Ethereum so they are still waiting for Ethereum to rise and at this time Ethereum is green and maybe early next year it can go up so that people who are patient will get good results from patience.

For most people, it is not necessary to know about technology. In many cases, it is more people's input and attention that promotes the development of COINS. Sometimes it's pure chance.

Although I know very little about Ethereum, I know that Ethereum has a large user base, which is enough to support the price of Ethereum not to return to zero. I think this is enough.

I guess %90-95 of people who are in this market haven't understood blockchain, ethereum or other some important things. They are just looking to eth prices and when it dropped below 100 dollar, they just thought eth will die we saw topics about it, but we mustn't think just prices everybody should look to their technology and developments.

I still continue to study the characteristics and specifics of Ethereum. The more I learn about the features of Ethereum, the more I believe in its excellent potential for successful development in the future. It is very important for me to see that the project develops thanks to the efforts of an excellent team of developers who truly understand their goals.

Yes, most of the ideas and principles in the work of Ethereum I understand today. This is really a promising and powerful platform with excellent development potential and great value for the crypto market. Similar ideas are offered by the Waves platform, but I believe that Ethereum has more chances for success.

I don't think you would need 3 hours only to find which is the best investment to invest with your money. That will wasting your time if your investment was not gettig more profits in the future.

I am very confused by all the opinions of people about ethereum, some say well but some say otherwise
Could it be that I really don't understand ethereum so that until now I still think that ethereum is a good coin and has an important role in crypto and also the market, although the supply is too much but the market needs for ethereum are also high therefore I think ethereum will not damage the market

I believe that Ethereum today remains one of the most successful and efficient technologies in the modern digital society. This is a reliable and convenient cryptocurrency, a functional platform for launching new projects and coins, as well as an excellent option for long-term investments, while the Eth price remains at a minimum level.

I really don't understand much about them. I am a trader, I rely solely on news and signals to buy and sell. I'm not a long-term investor, so I don't want to learn too much about it but i still have a daily profit ;D
right, I myself have not known much about ethereum but, I have believed that ethereum waves will produce benefits for me so I also became very interested in using ethereu because there are also many mysteries that are still hidden and seeing coins in the market is ethereum lah which I think is suitable for purchase.
