Ive read an article about Bill Gates saying that cryptocurrencies kills people. He explained that crypto provokes people to hide thier financial transactions from the government, and revolutionizing terrorism, financial crime etc. Some people use crypto to buy drugs, bombs, guns that are use for drug dealing and terrorism that kills people 'in a fairly direct way'

I think Gates is somehow right about this. But i think it depends on the people who are using cryptocurrency, if they will use it in a good way or in a bad way. What do you think?

Accepting that that was said by Gates it would be a silly article because the same could be applied to $ and nobody is saying that US dollars kill people.

He has a point because cryptocurrency with the current setting could easily be an avenue of hiding fund that could fuel all these bad vices. However, I believe you don't throw away the baby with the bad water. It is high time the government step in and have a measure of control without stopping the freedom we currently enjoy in the world of cryptocurrency.

Many people are using BTC as a currency in their own way and we can't hide the fact that it is also being used in numerous bad ways. Anyone can do whatever they want to do with it. But, it is also a huge misunderstanding that it can only be applied to cryptocurrencies. These things (different type of usage of it) can also be applied to any fiat that exists around the globe. I was really surprised and disappointed on how hypocritical Bill Gate's statement was.


"Bitcoin kills people". Is he pretty much saying that bitcoin and or other cryptocurrencies like Monero is the only currency for buying drugs and other illegal items/products? If that's the case then the US dollar also kills people; "kill" would probably an understatement, probably massacre or genocide would fit better. It's the "Guns kill people" fiasco again. I expect statements like these from old, technologically illiterate people; definitely not from a huge name on the technology industry.

Bill Gates might have some point in what he says but is he gonna pay for our daily needs if in any case we depart from cryptocurrency? He is killing the cryptocurrency because he know he will have little profit if many people will get rich and buy on other software other than microsoft. To some degree, Bill Gates is right, but you shouldn't blame the technology for people misusing it. Good technology is always abused and turned destructive, e.g. Nuclear fission was used to create nuclear bombs, now it is used in nuclear power plants to generate energy. Don't condemn the technology, condemn the people.

Yes I have seen that article, it is featured on coindesk too. Immediately he was responded and I fully agree with those responses, that crypto kills people as much as cash does, and in all Gates' accustation you could replace crypto with cash and they would remain true.

Gates probably has his own agenda and he sais things that he sais just to get to his own goals.

I have slightly different opinion in this matter, I believe that there should be some form of efforts from the government's side to make sure that cryptocurrencies are used in a right manner within the country, I agree that we see bloodbath in the crypto market regularly but again, it is all about risk factor of the trader, if he is not comfortable with it then he should not get in to it, it doesn't make any sense to blame water if you don't know how to swim.

Yes anything can kill people and gates statement is quite normal and we should not make it a big deal.Like what this guy said there are people that's been killed by gates software so he shouldn't say something that makes  a relevance to his creation.Bitcoin is an amazing creation the people that using it is the one that should be blamed not bitcoin itself.

Yes crypto currency is used by criminals. knifes kill people. Drinking too much water kills you. There are many things that can be used to kill people but how bad is the issue and is it enough of a problem to bad the thing being used to kill. Far more drugs have been bought with cash and through bank transfer than bitcoin since its arrival.

Even FIAT money can kill people if you use it to fund terrorism and purchase guns for bad entities. Any currency whether FIAT or crypto can be used in illegal activities. It's just that bad people are taking advantage of the anonymity of cryptocurrencies. That is why some countries are banning crypto specially those cryptos that are decentralized just like bitcoin.

Government should not focus on these disadvantages when it comes to crypto. They should look at the brighter side of this new technology that we are in right now.

The mere fact that trading platforms and exchanges asks for validation of identity before we can transact or exchange our bitcoin to any currency to protect each country from using bitcoin as a vehicle to money laundering.

I know this totally defeats the purpose of DECENTRALIZATION and  ANONYMITY but its the only way that the government can monitor illegal activities and the only way that they can tax people who's hoarding lots of cryptos.

This is on to a degree. The whole point of crypto is to not have to trust that the money you have coming to you wasn’t blood money.  Well fuck that’s a little hard next to impossible. Eventually all cryptos except for those in long term cold storage will be “tainted” if you will.  What we must focus on as a human race is not giving too much hype to those that have more than others.  We have to learn to work with each other not against. There are few very good comments in this thread, its interesting how far can some people go, I expected more from Bill Gates! I saw that article this morning and after few lines I stopped reading! Headline intrigued me, but after reading first lines "Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, whose recent takes have included that Apple should just build a backdoor into the iPhone because the government might demand it anyway, is now warning that cryptocurrency is killing people." Some people don't have what to do then they blame crypto for all problems in the world. I believe that we had many discussions about it here on forum, just idiots can see this article and believe in what Bill f. Gates said. He who made billions on technology said so stupid things in one interview, I'm a bit shocked. Who knows why he did this, and what can be his long term plan? To be against crypto? Maybe he feel jealous because he isn't creator of crypto?

These kind of dirty business was running pretty much in the same way when crypto was not even in existence. After crypto came into existence, it just provided a different method to finance such things. The span and scope of such businesses didn't change, just expanded the payment method.

So it surely depends on the people who are using cryptos. These kind of dirty business will go on. Even if crypto got banned, they will continue the business with fiat. Nothing will change.

So it is not correct to term it as "Cryptocurrency kills people", it is a very negative term and not theoretically right. If this is the case, then it is also right to say that " fiat kills people", which is actually not. We need to change the way we look to cryptos.

People kill people, do not blame guns or cryptocurrency. Anything can be used for good or bad. If a person chose to use crypto or bitcoin to buy drugs or guns then it is the persons fault, not bitcoin. We should start taking responsibilities for our actions, and do not blame technology for things we've done using technology.

Yes, Gates is just giving his opinion about people who uses crypto in a negative way that would harm some other people. However, i think there are more people who uses crypto in a positive way than in a negative way. Crypto currency was made to help people not to harm other people. Bad persons will always be a bad persons, even without crypto they will really find ways to get what they wanted. First time I'm hearing that, and normally Bill Gates favors crypto, so maybe that's out of context, or the source is not valid. Anyway, it doesn't really matter because fiat is still by far the most used system to support terrorists, so no point in blaming bitcoin for that. Even the FBI has already reported several times, that the bitcoin txs used for criminal actions is minimal, compared to fiat, or even other cryptos that are more private than BTC.

I do not think so, Cryto is only a tool to pay, if you buy bombs, guns ... etc. You have to transport them, you will be caught by police on the way. You can not blame the crypto market for killing people.

yes you are right, it is not entirely a bitcoin error but also the bitcoin user itself.

Every technology that have been invented have the potential to kill people same also to give life. People travelling have accident then got injured while an ambulance is used to convey them to the hospital with which without the timely intervention a lot of lives would have been lost which then says mean that the same vehicle that led to some peoples death also led to sustaining the lives of other. Its true that those things he talked about are actually happening which no doubt people have been 'killed'.

He might have a good point on that but why don't we see this in a brighter side, I can see that cryptocurrency also has a great advantage like helping people to step out of the poverty and etc. Even before crypto takes over the market, killing is getting worse so I cannot see that this will might cause that to happen just like what Bill Gates said. I agree that to some extent cryptocurrency can kill people in a way that it can be used as a mode of transaction to pay for those terrorist attacks and other illegal activities but then all other mode of payments can kill people as well because as long as it is accepted in the market and maybe untraceable then the people behind those activities will use it like dollar, euro, and even precious metals.

Bill Gates put emphasis on anonymity of the transaction why cryptocurrency is used for illegal activities but there is still more anonymous than crypto and it is cash. You cannot easily trace cash if you transact it physically with no trace of online transfer.

People dont die because of bitcoin, they die because of the terrorists or drug dealers that are killing them because the police or army cant stop them. Bitcoin may be just a way to hide their money and transactions but do you think that if bitcoin disappears no more people are going to get killed? No, because terrorists are still going to do their job and they are going to find a way to buy guns. Same with drug dealers, do you think they are going to stop selling if bitcoin would disappear? Of course no because they can also make and hide their money in other ways.

I dont think there really is a big problem with bitcoin and terrorists or drug dealers probably only for the big guys who make serious business of millions of dollars(because I dont think a small drug dealer would waste his time selling drugs for 50$ with bitcoin) but even they have to exchange their bitcoins into cash so that the transaction will appear on the bank records.

Bill Gates was right. It could be used to support terrorism and other things that's illegal. It doesn't actually kill people, people kill people. Even with how much money you have if you don't use it for something bad then it does not become evil. But when a person used it, then it is the most evil thing that kills people. But because bitcoins are easily transferred unlike the real currency, it would be easy to use these coins as what Gates stated. For this reason many feared its usage could end up bad and into the wrong hands.

The illegal acts you mentioned like hiding their financial transactions from the government, promoting terrorism, used to buy drugs, guns, etc are and were being done with currencies like dollars also. So does it mean that dollars kill people? This is the fault of people that they are not looking at the advantages of the cryptos but rather using its disadvantages for illegal acts. if you and bill gates have empirical data related to crypto abuse I might agree a bit, but the reality is not just crypto that is the mastermind of any form of criminality in the world. even conventional money used long times ago, until this time has a gap to be used as a means of payment of criminal acts. crypto would be a new hope if it continues to be developed, able to suppress the number of abuse, because the technology is completely independent without any intervention.

From what I know, everything in this world has some positives as well. Every good thing can be abused and it doesn't only happen to crypto. Even without the existence of cryptos, crime was going on as it is now and fiat was still used to perpetuate crimes.

There have been many unfortunate cases in the world where many people invest in virtual currency but have been stolen or somehow caused their psyche to feel unnatural. From the world to free their sorrows. It is still possible that these cases will happen again.

I don't know how cryptocurrency are killing people. I think, if someone has mis-invested in cryptocurrency, because of not having the maximum knowledge about their market.
