Can somebody explain how to decide buying an altcoin?

Let me write what I know;

• Check the coinmarketcap.com and choose ones with high volume
• Check the projects
• Check the chart, if it is pumped, don't buy, wait
• Check the chart, if it is dumping, wait low volatility

Please correct and/or add other ideas to help noob traders like me :)

I will try to give merits to good posts as much as I can.

I think it's very hard to actually do that but of course there's ways to actually get one but not super accurate  but it's worth the risk but of course you can both loose or gain.

I think the best reasons to buy an altcoins is mainly to consider their project whitepaper and dev team because there are lots of altcoin with similar project and shady developer. However there are also many project that doesn't seems to help making human life easier and mainly focusing in maintaining their price after ICOs and after entering the market.

High volume doesn't mean that coins will last long or the project will continue in the long term, if you're a short term trader then this might help you however if you're a long term investor then this doesn't make sense at all since coinmarketcap volume only shows the last 24H.

You should know that a rise happened when the price is pumped, if you're waiting then you should underline how long you will wait until you want to buy. Is it after the correction? Is it when the price created a new high? Most people tend to buy when the uptrend already over and considered a new dowtrend as a corrections. Its better to follow the whales then to swim against it.

You can't predict a pump and dump just by looking the chart, a dump in lower 5M timeframe doesn't even mean a thing when you consider 1D volume, each chart has their own volume and volatiliy. You should consider what kind of investor you want to become, is it a trader with lower timeframe (5M,15M,1H) for trade or an investor with higher timeframe(4H,1D,1W). For the record, if all you do is waiting when the price is pumped and dumped, then its better to wait in the sideline and not try to invest at all because there is no perfect time to do an investment unless you already created a plan to overcome the lack of information.

The major point that you still left out is what do we know about the project for which the altcoin was made. I mean does that project is making any good progress or is there any recent good/bad news about it. If yes/no depending upon the answer you can choose not to invest or invest heavily as the result would depend on that considering its future.

Rest of the points that you have mentioned are correct one and there doesnt need any additional facts to be considered before you can buy any coin.

If you want to check it using chart, technically you need to mastering trendline drawing. If price hits the line, that could be a signal to buy or sell. But note that, it is not always valid signal so we should use other supporting tools like indicators and news.

You should learn how analyse the trendline, and identify 2 basic things:

• support levels
• resistance levels

This is not an easy skill, but just these two things alone can help you figure out when to buy and when to sell.

As a general rule, you sell when you've hit a resistance line and buy when you've hit a support line. (the problem is you have to identify them and you can easily mix them up in real situations, especially because, for example, a resistance line can be breached from time to time)

To look at whilst to invest. There are hundreds of altcoins. There’s no manner they’ve all been going up constantly for 30 days. What occurs is that they pass up for a while then drop back a piece then move up again then drop lower back once more and so forth. the general trend is probably up however there’s peaks and troughs on the way. research the cash to look if it’s some thing you’re satisfied to invest in then buy in whilst the price is on a downturn, preferably simply before it starts offevolved to rise again despite the fact that obviously this isn’t always clean to predict. There are books on chart patterns which could assist to perceive tendencies.

There is no exact answer for this question but the common rule is buy low and sell high so you have to buy when the prices are low.And as you said don't buy when the price chart is in rapid increase because the chance for price falling after the rapid increase is more.But no one can say when to buy only you need to understand from that your experience if you are a noob in trading start with low capital and then once you got familiar with the trading increase your capital amount.

Well, this should help noobs who may want to trade long term and for any one who may want to use this, please try to learn how to use MACD and RSI for divergence, oversold and overbought market.

With that being said, here is how I go about long term trading with the altcoin market. (This should be for those who want to take advantage of the bottom and peaks, not the HODLers).

1. Since it is a large space, you can make use of this site to look for oversold markets (https://rsihunter.com), but please be careful the coins or tokens you choose as not all coins should be traded (that is my own opinion) and in that case you may want to be sure of the coin by trying to check the team, project and idea, before going ahead, except it is a coin or token you are already familiar with. You can search the particular coin market on coinmarketcap.com to get some information such as website, history and stuff.

2. Also, you should consider time frame that suits you best, but for long term and this pattern, 4hr and daily time frame is perfect. You can make that decision after trying both time frames on your first few trades.

3. Do not rush to buy even after a market is oversold. Forget about the short and quick pull backs which is why for a beginner, I would actually advise you get use to the daily charts before even going lower. Monitor the market, turn on your RSI and MACD indicators (in this case I want to believe you have learned how to use them - there is a lot of resources online to make use of, just search for how to detect divergence on MACD most especially). RSI can also be used for some sort of divergence, but to know if a market is overbought is when the line is above 80, oversold is when it is below 20, depending on your settings. I love using RSI length 8 for some reasons, but the default is 14 and that should be good enough.

4. Now, this is the tricky part but not that hard. When the candles keep going down and the MACD are moving up, that is a divergence and some accumulations already going on. To be in a good position, you may also want to learn price action with the candles, and in this case watch out for those bullish candles. In some cases, you can actually see the market going sideways, that can make it easy, but watch out, just in case you see some break down below historical supports (I forgot, you should learn support and resistance as well).

5. Now, assuming all things have worked pretty fine, as mentioned above, just have patience and wait for it. Now, buying is easy, but selling is another hard part. Firstly, never get greedy, as you can just stick to a certain percentage and if you are lucky to have that, then fine. However, the same way you watched out for the bullish divergence to buy in, you can also watchout for bearish divergence or once you see FOMO and an overbought market on the RSI, sell and be happy with the profit you have made. Sometimes, the market may move up the more, but remember, greed is what has led most traders into losing what they have gained. So, look for other potential markets or wait for another dip.

6. To add to number 5, you can also use price action on the candles to know when a price is being rejected. However, I would advise you to always sell bit by bit as long as the value is becoming too good to be true. At least, get out your initial investment, when you have reached a stage, and then play with the rest.

I really tried as much as possible summarizing this but not easy. I have given enough clue, so do not rush, learn how to use some of those indicators, be sure you know what you are doing, and this should be a safe way for anyone who wants to trade. I hope I did not end up confusing anyone the more.

Its very difficult to tell but you should analysis it when coin price is up and down then you buy some coin

seems like youre bright enough to ask some question like this because we can see that you know every fundamentals of buying good coins..i guess i dont have something to add,but to tell you that just follow your instincts because you already have the skills.

I think your list is enough and very valuable for newbie like me and I can say you're technical trader. There's also method to decide when to buy and we call it fundamental, meaning depend news ( rumors ). For this one, you should search many news about altcoin and create calculation if the news comes up what will happen into crypto market. This is good method for opportunist trader create income, do that and good luck to you.

I know there are many people around like me, so I decided to help them and myself collecting good signs of buying in a single topic.
I hope we can create a nice list for that.

Of course nobody can predict 100%, but traders are people too and they have some accurate predictions as well, so what they do?

It cannot be that easy to explain in 4 steps.

We need to buy when the price is low but it is hard to find the bottom line of the price level that is why people are saying do your own research.For me I will start buying bitcoin when there is a positive news about bitcoin and sell when there is a negative news about bitcoin because normally the price will dump and bump according to the news about bitcoin.

There are ways how to buy alts, depends on certain events of the the alt itself and the market status. The total market volume and most probably the price of Bitcoin. Here are some tips that I got from the beginning when I was just practicing. Pay attention to Bitcoin, most alts are pegged or correlated to altcoins, most of them drops when BTC price drops. Never put your money in one alts only, diversify it to the most alts that suits your taste and you believed in. Losing is an option, don't drag yourself with it and accept it. Set a stop loss, that way you can start again with less damage and try to learn from you mistakes. These are some tips that are useful for me, hope it might help you too.

We either buy when the market is down or we buy in bulk. The reason is that when the market is red, the purchasing power of the money we have is more and we can buy more goods and servises that we could before. Secondly, even if the market is not down, if you purchase in bulk, your average cost is redused as a result of which you spend less than you would have spent if the amount of the goods bought were not huge.

Trading discussion isn't the worst board for this conversation, but I just feel there are people with better expertise on the subject of Altcoins.

That being said, I rarely find myself purchasing an altcoin, because they are rarely a good investment from what I've gathered. Altcoins, I have found are rarely a good long-term investment when compared to bitcoin and seem to be more of a short-term opportunity.

Your criteria are a bit off I believe, because high-volume does not always mean good things and can very often mean that you have missed the bus. I would argue that it is very difficult to find a coin with High-volume that is not currently pumping(rising) or dumping(falling). The only criteria that I can seemingly get behind is to check out the projects, because that will normally tell you the longevity and success of a project, all things being equal. You have to verify that the project is offering a creative solution, if it is not then it will gain no traction.

Large purchases are never a good idea, regardless of the market we're in, and especially not if the market hasn't been tanked to the bottom. You are either a bit confused with how you want to explain yourself, or just completely miss the target. Either way, buying and selling should always be done in smaller fractions -- bulk purchases, as you like to call them, make you too dependent on one particular outcome, which is never a good thing in this market. I like to work with 5-10% buy or sale fractions per time, which gives me enough freedom to catch up on a decline, or unload more coins in case the market keeps going up, all to maximize my profits. In this case it's largely a matter of logical thinking....

Bitcoin has just hit a strong fall and broke the $ 7900 level and will return to the downtrend. This is an example of why i said that many investor tend to buy when the uptrend already over and considered a new dowtrend as a corrections, you should differ your point of view when the market is down. A correction has different meaning with a trend switch. You should upgrade your trading knowledge using either technical analysis or fundamental to gain a new reason to buy or sell. Buying in bulk when the price is cheap will surely upgrade your quantity of coins however if the price keep decreasing then you won't have enough money to do another buyback while maintaining your losses. Therefore all you can do is doing what most common investor do, waiting and hope someday the price will reach your initial buying price.

I agree with some of your idea such as checking volume and the project. There are several additional idea from me:
1. If altcoin is in ICO position, check the project profile including the roadmap, project team core and advisors about their expertise, experience and capabilities, and also the benefit provided to people. If understood that the services will be demanded by lot of people, this project has good prospective.
2. If altcoin has finished the ICO means the project is running and the coins had been distributed, then below to be checked:
   a. Do technical analysis covering: seeing the chart including sufficient indicators such as Moving Average, stochastic, volume, etc.
   b. Do fundamental analysis covering: search current progress of the project achieved by team, seek the information about global news specially bitcoin and other crypto as a whole, and also check current opinion of people to the altcoin targeted.

Those above are general idea when we should buy and also sell our crypto.

Wow.... You really deserve applaud for even taking your time to state all these, no matter how long it looks, it is resourceful and informative. This is more like the summary of how I trade altcoins for the long term and this would really help anyone who is actually ready to learn. To add to this, I would say sticking to the 24 hour (daily) candle is always the best, but no one should expect a huge increase quickly as all these takes time for those looking forward to a bull market.

Most times, you may need to wait a long time to get the best result, but that is the idea of long term trading anyway.  You have really explained almost everything to make any one start trading long term easily. Good one bro!

By the way, the OP has stated enough as well and how to check the coins to buy so as not to end up bag holding shit coins, but I would like to add the Ichimoku cloud strategy to what haroldtee has stated. Ichimoku cloud has always been good to trade markets that are changing trends easily. I cannot start giving all the details as it would require some graphical representation, but there are lots of articles online to help anyone to trade this strategy for both short and long term.

We all know that we are still experiencing the blood bath in digital crypto currency and for me I think it is the best opportunity to invest in crypto. But it is still depends upon on you. The best way to know when to buy is having a target price. It would be a big help for you to decide if when are you going to buy. Actually, I never use my own money to invest in digital crypto but I use this strategy when I am selling all the coins that I am holding. I swear that this strategy is good whether you are a beginner or not.

Since you are already truthful to yourself that you do not have any idea of trading, the best thing is for you to hold. Trading is better for sure as you can use the fluctuations to make some pretty good profit, but you will not be making any profit if you do not know how to trade, and with the market being always faster most of the time, and with the way the alts always respond to dumps, you may end up not having a good decision making technique for your trade. Since you are eager to learn, there are so many resources online you can make use of and that would help you.

Practice means experience I think,but there is no definite way available when to invest on crypto currencies we just have to make our own decision,that is why people saying crypto currency investment is risky.But if we are going to hold that coin in long term then current price is the best you can get huge amount of profit if he can hold more than one year.

How to read charts correctly? I know the news are important but ignore it for now.

if you can analyze, analyze the market you use for trading then you can buy the coins you want to buy. but if not, you could just use your feeling and see the coin that is going down drastically, then you can buy it.

For this, you must have known the better and best features of the coins that you are investing or trading in. you must be knowing as well the ups and downs of your coin, how they propagate and how they behave in different situations. If these basic information is in your mind, then you can know it better that what to buy and when to buy and when to sell as well. Learn first and then practice.

I think that the logic is prety much clear. You buy Bitcoin at the phase when the price is falling, when the market is in red. Depends also how much funds in what period you have available but to my opinion it's good to have some funds alocated for such situations to use the opportunity to react when the price is low.

All your list of what to do when you trade is all correct. At some point if you want to be a trader then it means that you're doing a short term type. Some prefer holding but holding is for long term and short term but since you are a trader it will depend on you if you want long term or short term. Both long term and short had risk of losing profit but it is another experience of trading. Just be careful because there are scammer waiting for their chance to fool someone and steal their profits. About checking the project you mention you should also check the background, knowledge of cryptocurrency, purpose of their project and their experience in their own skills of each members and the developers in the project especially the founder unless you already know the information of every member in a certain project so that the risk of losing profit will be lessen and earning profit may be more that you have.

For buying, we have to consider many calculations and chart reading because we have to check the previous price of the coin because if we buy them at the high value, we have to wait long to sell them in the market. So it always good to check their previous high price and previous low.

First of all you need to know what kind of coin it is. It is necessary to study the project well, the project team, also the project product. Much depends on it.

If I were to be asked with that question, I would likely say that the good time to buy is that when the price is low, or when the orice was high but was lowered due to the market crash. Based on what I have analyzed in the charts, it seems most of the first quarter every year is where we experience the bearish market, so I believe it is a good time to buy them at lower prices and wait until the market explodes again after the April tax deadline.

Of course when there are bad news about given coin this is another story. The news are a bit off the topic for my questions, I'm aware of following the news is important.

You'll never know when to buy, you're never going to be able to know when the market is going to swing one way or the other -- if you did you wouldn't be posting here and you'd be out making massive amounts of money. People wish they knew how to do this, but NO ONE KNOWS, warren buffet also doesn't know folks!

Just buy, even with traditional investments, time is always your friend.

I think you can know when is the right time to buy a coin from the trip of the coin you want to buy, when the coin has good news then it is certain that the coin price you will buy will increase, so better find the coin information you want buy before buying coin.

I believe that at the present time you should buy and trade altcoin, you can see that bitcoin prices in recent days are showing signs of strong recovery and this has made the market become vibrant again, lots of altcoin are pump strong. Those strategies might work, but I think you also have to find out the reason something is being pumped or dumped. This is especially true for a less established cryptocurrency that could have some major issue that is causing the dump in which case you shouldn’t buy. That may be what you mean by “check the projects”, but I wasn’t sure.

I'm not a professional trader but IMO I think to find out good time to buy we need to take a look at price chart and trading volume as well. I don't know how to analyze the price chart so I only often focus on trading volume :)). If there will be a suddenly changing in trading volume of any cryptocurrency in any exchange, I think it's a good signal and it might be the right time buy ;D

Altcoins have different price behaviour so it might not help to just rely on those you mentioned above. Checking also the chart won't help especially in altcoins as they are more proned to manipulation than bitcoin. Some coins also are not yet listed on the coinmarketcap.com

So how to deal with this? You must have guts to face the risks. As long as you understand the risks, you are good to go. One step you can consider is if there's any ANN thread related to that certain coin. Upcoming updates for a certain coin might result on a hype. Also don't get carried away once there is a sudden large pump as instead of getting profits, you will be wrecked.

Honestly there is no direct advice that literally you will try. You must find your winning stratgey by your own as we have different approach on when to buy or to sell.

I think that the only strategy that can be applied by both a professional and a novice is the date of a price fluctuation of plus and minus 5; 10%. But this applies only to the case when the trader is trying to make money on the difference in price.

There must be a reason why you should invest into a projects as investors and you must not invest into any projects if you did not know the right time to buy. Your buying decision is what actually makes you good money and to buy into a coins you must buy at the accumulated time and always buy at the bottom and sell at the top or distribution times.

No one say the right answer for this question because the crypto market changes every second so you can't judge the power and value of it , the only thing is if you want to invest in a currency just do it quickly.

A lot of people that have been victim on this kind of situation wherein they just invest but not making sure for if this is real and lefit one so knowing when to buy must make a startegy and study on it.

When the low is conspicuous and the over reaction of the market of selling  a particular asset is illogical and uncalled for, you should know that is the best time to buy. And if there is new lows then you should by more!

The easiest way to know when to buy is precisely in circumstances similar to the ones we are in, after a huge growth in the price of bitcoin we saw a crash and for some time we saw a very low price, that is the perfect point of entry into the market you're basically buying at the very bottom, the only problem with such a strategy is that many people get very afraid that the price is going to continue to go down but if you can overcome that feeling you will see that buying at that point is the best thing you can do.

All I do is look at the charts, look at buy wall and sellwall and do not choose a coin that is climbing or has gone up high.

Look at the Bitcoin movement, if Bitcoin goes down then we'll see altcoin also down, that's the right time to buy the coin.

But what I like is when Bitcoin and altcoin are opposite, if Bitcoin goes up then altcoin goes down.

Do you see these two lines? once they have crossed each other at the bottom the price will most probably go up anytime soon - and that is, for me, the best time to buy... Another tip: look for a coin that is sleeping for a while, buy as many as you can, and then wait for a pump.

It is hard to define at what time are we going to buy some coins that have a potential to grow up immediately, for me if there is a dip price i will go on background check that kind of coins if there is a potential to pump there value at any moment before i buy on it.

Sometimes in a bad market it is too stressful and tiring studying charts so most experienced people will just do it long term or put everything on standby unless they can see some signs. In a bullish market I just usually use stoch, rsi, macd, cci and some other simple checkings like updates and some rumors which I think have sense.

Follow some experts like ohheymatty, Ianbalina groups on telegram and understand the hype coins. After then, complete your own research before investing in any altcoins. These days, many of the ICOs who are raising Millions of millions are turning to be scam. It is very important to complete a research before investing in any of the ICO, as it is not established, we cannot invest on any of the coin just blindly.
I will check the below things before I invest my time and money in any of the Coin:
1. Their team strength
2. Roadmap of the project
3. Marketing strategies in improving the project
4. Market demand on the project they doing it (whether the product they come up with is unique or just copying the existing one)
5. How the support of the team/ are they available anytime- which helps in understanding their customer success, which will be a backbone of the project.
6. Follow the conversations they are doing in their community for few days before purchasing the coins.
7. Recent news about the project
8. Reviews about the project.

Another thing I would also recommend is paying attention to media.
Reason I say this is because:

- feedback is important whether positive or negative
- critical reviews by professionals
- using certain things such as telegram, Facebook, Twitter and various other tools play an important roll on how a project is coming along.

Afterwards comes down to your own judgement whether you want to invest or not.

There is no specific time to buy bitcoin, because it depends on the need and if you need to invest your money in bitcoin then every time is the right time. Don’t be panic to wait for the right time. The price is growing and it reached almost 9k. If you have money, buy some bitcoin and hold them for some time if you want to make money against your investment.

Well, that is if you want to go with the fundamental analysis aspect of trading but I would not recommend just that since you cannot do with it alone to be able to get the best of the market. As far as I am concerned, it still makes more sense making use of technical analysis with your fundamental analysis to be able to make the best decision in your trade.

I really do not always use most of the time fundamental analysis though, and I have been doing hugely well. As long as you have great knowledge on how to analyze the market and do your thing effectively, then I see no reason why you should have a problem at all, no matter your style of trading.

Moreover being a long term holder, I do not worry on where I am buying because all the prices are good to buy and hold when you are targeting millions of dollar value for your bitcoins. This is what exactly I am doing. I am not deciding my buying just by price levels of bitcoins but by the available excess funds for that month.

For this, definitely there is nothing right now that can measure and tell you best time for buying or selling. This is all about your thinking and observation you made over the market. Everything comes with experience so whatever you do in the market, try to grasp best possible analytics over different conditions and situations. Only then you would be able to become a good trader.

It is good but not necessary that when then price is low you should buy coins because if the price is high then what will you do/ will you never invest in crypto? I think it is the right time. I think it's just examples and references only dude, because we know that there are lots of good coins but not listings on coinmarketcap, but I agree to them for when to buy, the charts will be helpful because you can see the volume and marketcap to determine when to buy . eg price decreased and volatility low and volume rose, maybe I will buy it right then..

Yes. That is what I have noticed also. Bitcoin dump then Ethereum then all the tokens under ERC20. How come there is no stand alone market for one token? I believe it should be changed. Well, it is not about high or low volumes. You can buy a coin which has a low volume but you can still earn a good profit. It depends on most of your skill and your analysis. If you are a good trader, you can make money with any coins on the market, even when it is traded with a low volume. The projects do not bring you much information. Try to follow the news. Most of the news are created by whales or group of rich investors. If you can follow the news, you can easily make profit from their activities

I set rsi alerts for over bought/over sold around the 20 or 80ish range. I dont set the alerts for coins with a low volume though. When I get the alert I go in and check the macd. If those things look good I determine if I want to try and scalp or hold it for a while.

If I decide to scalp I will check out the 5 10 15 and sometimes 30 or 1 hour charts. I will also check for news (the best I can) to Try and make sure I don't get in the wrong side of a pump and dump. If everything looks stable I'll usually go in and set my stop loss and either take a profit or take the L. I always try to keep my bank in btc. I dont really trust the usdt stuff yet.

Same here , Im buying some coins when I feel that there is a panic selling happen because it is my way to get a chance to buy crypto on a low value. Waiting for months to have the coin pump will be worth it because of the profit I gain from the coin that I bought.
