I think they will, just have to learn how to minimize the risks of volatility.

I think investing as soon as possible is the only way to really do that
So that losses can be subtracted from market gains

Does anyone(coinbase, bitpay, etc) offer a service where you can pay at the point of purchase with BTC and the merchant receives USD?

I'm sure there's going to be more and more places starting accepting bitcoin next year; in fact, I think 2014 is going to be the year of BTC  ;D.

After the recent attention in the media in the last few months, I would expect definitely a more widespread acceptance of bitcoin in the year of 2014.  It doesn't even matter if another crypto-currency wins out in the end, bitcoin will be more widely accepted first because it was the first of its kind to grab the attention it grasped so, and will in the future.

Altcoins currently believe they can "win out" but that is not possible

Bitcoin is the standard the same way we picked gold for its malleability we have chosen bitcoin for its stability People call it volatile but "still growing" and volatile markets are different things that need to be recognized as such

Altcoins are going to be like a field of corn around the bitcoin farm house ...or maybe altcoins are the golden geese... Bitcoin is not going anywhere

I think it will be more widespread but the likely hood of all malls in general accepting bitcoins seems very slim. I think it will take more than a year for that to happen. Certain stores might accept bitcoins, but the mall itself will likely take a lot longer than a year, probably closer to at least 5 if even. Malls do not even accept Paypapl yet.

Did you read the email? If that happens then most malls in America will have a store that accepts them

Once one store in the mall is accepting them the other stores will start and if that happens we could see Apple start accepting bitcoins via the apple shops in early 2014 so please support please send and email to brookstone

Automatic conversion to the merchant's favorite national currency is like 60% of the point of services like Coinbase and BitPay.

They will have to accept them if every other store in the mall around them starts accepting them It would be bad business not to

Apple is the center of tech for non techies so if they accept it then everyone will think it is ok to buy btc

I don't see why we don't see more gas stations doing it already maybe soon Everyone should start asking about that when they go in to pay for gas.

Any major adoptions would only be happening in top 5 countries. Third world countries are far-farway from it, and we need them push its value to da moon.

Well I think fairly soon we will see a bulk of coins in the market similar to China coin I do not see why there is not already a Brasil coin and Argentina coin Both of those economies love bitcoin And eventually we will see things like AIDS coin Cancer coin and Africa coin I heard that IGotSpots and some others are working on perfecting the devcoin script so that charitable coins can be made extremely simply.

Altcoins will forever be worthless, there's just no way you can get a large amount of shops to accept dozens of Altcoins. At the most they'd accept bitcoin and lite coin. (And lite coin is a stretch already)

They're not worthless, as people are obviously using them and are prepared to accept them in exchnage, but their mainstream use depends on whether they become accepted by merchants. You can buy stuff online with Feathercoin and Peercoin etc. You can also swap them for BTC easily enough, so they're not worthless per se.

Like a said there's no way a merchant will accept Altcoins, there's simply no added benefit of accepting dozens of different coins of the same kind, most aren't even compatible with each other.

Why would you have euros while living in America? You can swap euros for dollars before you buy something, and euros have value, but it's not handy to use a currency that is not accepted anywhere near you.

Altcoins are just trash

There are merchants that accept alt coins, and there will be a lot more coming in 2014. Sure, it doesn't compare to the amount of Bitcoin merchants, but they're not trash if people are willing to trade with them.

And one man's trash is another's treasure.

Nice! ,the volatility issue can be overcome by using a website for immediate conversion like bitpay etc... and they get there money in the bank. another difficulty is confirmations,it takes about 10 mins to confirm currently and I doubt they will accept non-confirmed payments.

And the mall has fast food so it could effect those markets as well

If their customers start asking them to accept seashells for payments do you think that they 'll do it?  :P

Like a said there's no way a merchant will accept Altcoins,

You're already wrong there is a place that accepts multiple altcoins for silver, copper and gold

A place , like in 1 , one single store.

You said that no one ever would So all it takes is one store for you to be completely wrong

Make it a habit whenever you purchase anything from anywhere simply ask " can I pay in Bitcoin ".

I 'm socially awkward enough already. I don't want to ask people to pay them with cryptos on top of that.

Someone should make a shell coin with 5 second blocks 1 coin per block and infinite coins

Sea shells that you could go down to the beach and find every 5 seconds were traded at one time Why couldn't the model work for coins

Most businesses won't take BTC unless it can be easily switched on using their existing POS system. As much as I love buying stuff IRL with bitcoin, at the moment, it doesn't make business sense to spend time learning about Bitcoin, drop cash on a parallel POS system, and train employees, all in an effort to appease a minuscule fraction of their customer base. What needs to happen first is to make Bitcoins easier to comprehend, secure, and use online.

This.  I think we'll see slow adoption "in real life" physical stores because of this.  The costs are too high the moment for all the reasons mentioned above to only capture a small market.  With time and greater adoption though, it will happen...eventually.

To the original poster, you could use bitcoins in the mall right now! Through gyftcards! :)

In Canada there's a virtual exchange that offers a debit card...

- You trade bitcoin for Canadian dollars
- They send you a debit card with the Canadian dollars on it
- You can spend in a store

Ok, you're not spending bitcoin directly but it's really close - here's a video that explains it...

That's already happening with payment processors like bitpay. Just give things time. 6 months noone new about bitcoin and you expect for everyone to jump on the wagon already?

I think you're exaggerating the cost or problems of implementing Bitcoin as a payment system. It would be no harder or difficult than training an employee to use the current chip and pin card devices. 'Contactless' card payments are now being rolled out and I can't see how paying with Bitcoin would be any different from that. In fact, paying with Bitcoin will be cheaper and quicker for the merchant as they don't have to pay creditcard fees etc. Obviously it's still early days for Bitcoin, but the benefits are there to be seen by all and all we need to do is wait for gradual mainstream acceptance which is happening slowly but surely already.

What needs to happen first is to make Bitcoins easier to comprehend, secure, and use online.

Yes, using Bitcoin will become simpler and easier. With every new technology it takes a little while to get used to.

Eventually, the businesses might realize they should keep the BTC instead of turning it into fiat. This is impossible until other businesses that they rely on start using fiat, etc. hmm...

Bitplastic has a few fees involved:

Quote
5% conversion fee from Bitcoin to send cash to your card. ATM usage fee is minimal, about $1.50 per transaction. No other fees.

I reckon it'll be easier just to print out a paper wallet or make your own bitcoin debit card with a QR code on or whatever. I'm sure there will be all sorts of services and gizmos for Bitcoin coming out in 2014 to make payment easier.

Been in contact with lamassu since i'm interested in buying one. Sells bitcoin for cash. Put cash, scann QR, confirm btc arrives, very simple. 5000 $ for one, cheaper if you buy many, they prefer Bitcoin but accepts Fiat. Can deliver about mars/april. For future versions they consider two-way and Lightcoin. Haven't checked out the other manufacturer yet.

Does anyone(coinbase, bitpay, etc) offer a service where you can pay at the point of purchase with BTC and the merchant receives USD?

Pretty sure both bitpay and coinbase and offer this.... no ?  I thought they did and I thought they also eat the losses themselves on things like double spending instead of the merchant having to worry about it.

Bitcoin-hotep for sure you should be able to use bitcoins in malls, restaurants and every other place you may think of. And these bitcoins won’t be used in one single country but they would be accepted worldwide so next time you won’t have to go for exchanging your currency before travelling to other country

Selling bitcoins at stores is a recipe for disaster. If bitcoin were sold "digitally" at a store, as in you would give the store cash and the store would send the bitcoin to an address that you provide then you would have instances where near minimum wage clerks accidentally send the wrong amount or send it prior to confirming payment.

If stores were to sell "physical" bitcoin then it would be very difficult for scammers to somehow empty addresses without actually buying the bitcoin. They could do this by revealing the private keys, taking a picture then leaving the store then transferring the coin out of the address being sold. If the store were to sell something that somehow displayed private keys upon purchase of the bitcoin then the private keys would be vulnerable to an attacker watching the printer that the private key is printed on, taking a picture of the private key as it is printed, and stealing the coins from the customer.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few stores throughout the country that will accept bitcoin. I think the mall would be a great place to place a bitcoin ATM - a lot of foot traffic, generally low crime, indoors.

If the store were to sell something that somehow displayed private keys upon purchase of the bitcoin then the private keys would be vulnerable to an attacker watching the printer that the private key is printed on, taking a picture of the private key as it is printed, and stealing the coins from the customer.

No, I mean being accepted at stores.

And if they were going to sell them at stores it would be an ATM.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few stores throughout the country that will accept bitcoin. I think the mall would be a great place to place a bitcoin ATM - a lot of foot traffic, generally low crime, indoors.

Someone should definitely start putting them in malls. They have security and everything.
I think the only downside to putting a BTC ATM at the mall is rent. AFAIK rent at a mall tends to be much higher the elsewhere because of the amount of foot traffic in malls, as stores do not need customers to go to the mall to go to their specific store but rather to go shopping at the mall. As a BTC ATM would likely create a good amount of foot traffic, it would be plausible that a coffee shop may actually pay the BTC ATM owner for keeping it in their shop as it would generate additional customers and press.

Please add emails if you want us to send them out.

The best way to do it would just be to find a store that would let you put it in their and ALSO create themselves a wallet and put a bitcoin sticker in their window, then you can get in to paying them in Bitcoin.

With all the big brands embracing bitcoins, i don`t think it is unrealistic to believe we will be able to use bitcoin in shopping malls soon. 2014 ? can`t tell for sure. same time next year ? HELL YEAH

I made this thread at the end of 2013, lol.
And I got a reply from Brookstone saying they might start accepting them. They just didn't get enough emails :(
If they would have started accepting it, everyone in the mall would have.

All it takes is one major retailer to open the flood gates. Keep emailing.

The ATM is something the store owner can't do themselves. The sticker is just to let the people know that they can exchange their money for coins. And you just have to pay the guy or lady rent (for the space) in Bitcoins.

Lol nothing I suppose, Overstock might've helped a bit, but basically nothing. I suppose if the Xapo debit cards actually come out, since they're supposed to soon, would increase public attention, but I'm not sure.

There are not any major retailers that are in the public consciousness accepting BTC, so there is literally nothing to say that about.

Besides the email I received from them, I haven't seen any mentioning of Xapo anywhere. I doubt it would affect public's awareness of Bitcoin.

IIRC both overstock and disk accepting bitcoin both helped the price (it when up the day these were announced) and both generated a good amount of news by the MSM. I would say that overstock probably had the biggest impact as they were the first.

Agreed, If we could get a store like Macys or Sears to except bitcoin I think others would follow. However I am not sure that with the confirmation times of bitcoin that this would be a feasible option for retailers.

Doesn't this solely depend on the store itself?

I could easily see a store like Brookstone being the first to accept BTC.  Or heck who knows...maybe the Microsoft store will try to beat Apple to the punch and have their brick and mortar store accept BTC...

Like a said there's no way a merchant will accept Altcoins, there's simply no added benefit of accepting dozens of different coins of the same kind, most aren't even compatible with each other.

There are merchants that accept alt coins, and there will be a lot more coming in 2015. Sure, it doesn't compare to the amount of Bitcoin merchants, but they're not trash if people are willing to trade with them.
