I agree with the other guy that below $500 doesn't seem likely.  There's other large exchanges (larger than gox in fact) out there. I would expect the price to drop if gox has bad news, but also i would expect people to quickly buy back in at cheaper prices.

Huge plummet tomorrow (today here, already)?  Well no.

I believe the only things that could make the value of bitcoin plummet are a fatal exploit in the design or a concerted effort to cripple and/or shut down exchanges.  The latter is possible, as over the past year we've seen the freezing of MtGox's funds and other exchanges being investigated for money laundering.  Cutting off the supply of money to exchanges would also be an effective way to make the price plummet as panicked investors and speculators battle to sell and withdraw their funds before the exchanges collapse.

Unless the OP has inside info about upcoming police and/or other government action, they're really just trolling.

As someone who works on trading systems, the idea that the transaction ID cannot be used to ID transactions is ridiculous.  Using timestamp/quantity/price is not at all reliable.  So, this is a major problem for Bitcoin service providers.  Moreover, it is likely that many of them are now vulnerable to a "double withdrawal" attack that has been hitting Gox.

Say what you will, but I suspect Coinbase is going to announce a pause in their activity, and the news that Overstock and TigerDirect are not accepting Bitcoins, even for a week, is going to drive this market to $100 - easy.

I haven't read enough to get a clear grasp on it, but if the one sending BTC writes and broadcasts the txid, how does the receiver alter it before it hits the network?

They've all known about this type of double withdrawal attack for well over a year. Gox is the only one suffering because they have shitty software and poor accounting.

Also you don't counter it by using timestamp/quantity/price. You use tx outputs/inputs which can't be changed.

So after reading over his comments I believe something's afoul. Not with the OP; but with the circumstances surrounding this market.

Unfortunately the OP is asking for payment for further information; that's not a donation and even though a donation may very well be deserved in this case there's a major difference between the two. It's amazing that he accurately predicted an unpredictable event and also predicted that it would be Gox responsible for igniting it. Nobody expected that to play out in this manner and in this moment so soon...

So he has credibility in his statements...

Now, to further examine this scenario...

Gox is allowing USD withdrawals now but not BTC withdrawals. They previously were insolvent and only offered Goxbux rather than USD. It's extremely likely that it was Gox selling off users coins to reduce the liability of a lawsuit if they do close down the exchange. Those with BTC balances will be forced to sell at low prices and Gox will profit from the difference left over in USD remaining afterwards. Remember that the BTC in user accounts aren't the actual BTC; just an entry into a ledger that indicates how many BTC each user has in a particular user account. They aren't actual wallets (the deposit a user makes  goes to a Gox owned wallet) and user accounts aren't linked to the blockchain...

The OP's sugestion seems like a logical chain of events and knowing that Gox now has about 50,000 BTC left (Assuming they just sold 20,000 of the coins contained within the wallets owned by the exchange) it could bring the market temporarily down to double digits across the major exchanges when they unload the rest instantly without regard for anything else. I can also conclude that even if the OP has insight into events yet to unfold; the fact that he's asking for payment in BTC is EXTREMELY Bullish. It can be concluded that the OP believes BTC will return to higher values after the strong buying waves clear away the blood in the water.

It's also plausible that Gox might have an arrangement with a third party to crash the price in exchange for financial relief as a bailout/get out of jail free card. This hypothetical third party would need to be some major institution or large investor and it's likely they might buy everything available very quickly up to an unknown amount.

I think there's some actual merit to what he's claiming and I'm a Libertarian perma-bull.

It's not a factor of how quickly the price restored; it's the $100 claim. Obviously the price will correct itself insanely quickly in that type of arbitrage situation... The recovery was within a matter of minutes.

I wouldn't have thought $100 was a realistic number. That type of movement is unprecedented...

Oh come on, someone simply dumped too many coins with a market order in a thin bid side on one exchange. Mistakes like that can happen sometimes especially with all those bots running wild. The OP claimed that MtGox would halt all trading indefinitely and that that would cause the price to drop to $100. That didn't even happen at all, MtGox just made up some crazy FUD about a bug in the bitcoin protocol and people started panicking like crazy. The price also didn't really drop to $100, a bot or a leveraged long just went awfully wrong on BTC-e. So, to summarize, OP is full of shit and just made a lucky guess about a huge plummet. I wouldn't even say it was lucky, a drop was to be expected if MtGox would come out and state that they would keep halting BTC withdrawals. And it wouldn't be a bad bet to make that MtGox would not resume BTC withdrawals this soon.

It seems that the mutated transactions attack is intensifying, and is not limited to MtGox, but spread to the whole network.
May I ask how could someone know in advance that the price is going to drop so sharply (on BTC-E at least), and because of this attack?
If this attack continues / worsens, then maybe the OP knows who is perpetrating it, or even he may be involved.

I'm not worried about a collapse; I don't think it was a mis-click; it was more like a "self destruct."

So lets look at our current situation...

This is fact:
- Gox is insolvent ever since the FBI grabbed 9 million USD.
- Gox price hovers far above other exchanges for USD withdrawal issues related to insolvency.
- Gox offers Gox Bux for withdrawals instead of USD.
- Gox halts all BTC withdrawals claiming a bug in the BTC protocol.
- Gox admits to knowing about the problem since 2011.
- Gox somehow re-enables USD withdrawals despite previous insolvency.
- Gox exchange prices plummet.

This is speculation:
- Gox was the source of the coins unloaded on other exchanges in an effort to gain fiat liquidity.
- Gox is allowing USD withdrawals because they expect the price to fall on their exchange as people cash out in fiat
- Gox can profit from the arbitrage as their members will sell BTC for relatively low USD amounts reducing the financial liability for Gox.
- Gox has no intentions of enabling BTC withdrawals but will allow users to cash out in fiat.
- Gox is using the Bitcoin protocol as a scapegoat to scam it's members by selling their coins at a profit through arbitrage.

Some additional info:
This "bug" is not actually a bug but rather a caveat that the exchanges are well aware of and have already designed their automated payout systems appropriately. The payout systems rely on wallet addresses and confirmations rather than TXID's to prevent this situation.
Gox enabled USD withdrawal the day after the major dumps on other exchanges.

You don't have to agree with my opinions on the speculation but if you look at the well known history and put the pieces together it really looks bad for Gox...

Not a fact. This belongs under speculation. They also didn't grab 9M USD but 5M if I remember correctly. I doubt that would make them insolvent.


The only thing I agree on is that MtGox is done for, they can only delay the inevitable. But this is something I and I think a big part of the market with me has been very much aware of since June 2013. The only thing that surprises me is how long MtGox has been able to keep being in business, I actually expected their lights to go out somewhere last year. I would be really surprised if they survive this year as well. But for me personally MtGox is already dead and has been for quite some time.

You're right on the $5 million USD. I was mistaken... It did make them insolvent, however. They had to disable USD withdrawal because the accounts that were seized were used for customer withdrawals according to the FBI warrant used to appropriate the accounts.

I agree with you that the death of Gox has been priced into the market sentiment; that doesn't mean Gox won't unload tens of thousands of BTC on other exchanges as they go out.

OP was right, how did he know about the bitcoin tx ID bug? We're done I'm afraid. Once people understand the full impact, we rewlly could see < $100 prices, huge sell pressure coming. This is going to cause major trust issue with the protocol because it's going to effect everyone. We need exchanges. One falling is no big deal, but it sounds like many if not all are being effected. This could be really bad.

Here's the thing; non-participants in Bitcoin can worry all they want; they don't participate so their concerns do not impact the exchange rates, period.  Only participants in Bitcoin can impact the exchange rates by buying and selling.  If some weaklings got into Bitcoin and don't take the time to understand Mt. Gox is blowing smoke then they made a mistake getting in in the first place.  Investing in Bitcoin is not for weaklings.

I think we're still just now absorbing the impact of this. People laughed off Gox's statement at first, maybe because they didn't want to believe it. We're probably going to see more exchanges suspend withdrawals one by one. If it's not resolved soon, we'll have a few more sell offs i'm afraid that will test historic lows. People will be rushing for the exits, it's a mixture of a legitimate bug and mass hysteria. This is shaping up to be the "worst case scenario" I always feared but hoped wouldn't happen.

I left Gox way back around end of April 2013 after the big crash, I pull my 0.05 BTC toward BTC-e. Could not be anymore happy to do so now. Also a friend tried to withdraw USD into his bank account and it took 4 to 6 months.....

I actually think that it is likely that he has come across these attack rumours on some hacking darknet site. To pop up with his spiel when he did, and say what he said only for it all to be played out the following day and then for a shit-storm of real issues with Bitcoin institutions being defrauded, DDoS's, and a general shit-storm of FUD worse than I can ever remember, to transpire across the following week, is a bit much to be left to coincidence. I mean, BitcoinSteve is not Edward50 or revans who are saying this stuff all the time, and by sheer law of averages, are going to get it right sometimes.

However, In the same way that when a country goes to war with another country, the projection that the country has upon their neighbours future and how they will be destroyed and brought to heal, isn't necessarily what is going to transpire in reality; whatever the community that BitcoinSteve was tuned into were stating would happen with Bitcoin, isn't necessarily what was going to happen, or what might yet happen.....

I read through his posts as he was making them. Yeah, he is chancer, but a chancer that has come by 2nd/3rd/4th hand information on DDoS attacks and exchange defrauding attempts that did actually occur.

...if not, then is a chancer who has lucked out in a 1/10'000 kind of way.

For me the question is: those hackers that the OP was somehow close to, have they finished their attack?
They expected to take the price down to 100$, and even on MtGox it's looking very unlikely to happen (happened on BTC-E though).
Do they have another ace in their sleeve, besides the malleability vulnerability? And if so, will they deploy it
today or tomorrow, after the exchanges allow BTC withdrawals, to spook and crash the market again?

A hypothetical third party/major institution such as the FBI perhaps?

I think there's probably some merit to to the idea.

Gox value will make a comeback, it always does...I think there is still enough trading going on there even though withdraws are frozen.   I bet they are still getting deposits from new people that haven't done their homework too...

history will tell :) luckily enough I went "only" 2/5 of my fiat at 700's, and used the other 3/5 today at 340 @ gox.. hopefully it was a good financial decision, yet risky since the market is crazy right now.

I will keep buying whenever I can, and personally I consider everything below $5k cheap at this point.

If thing goes wrong at least I will be happy to say that I "invested" in something which I believe, even if Bitcoins goes to cents. Should I be worried to be full in? nop, I think I should be happy because I am following my heart, and I am! :-*

I believe he will find a solution for their software problems and I believe in his intentions to keep his business working. I saw really bad things happen with MtGox, yet he never ran away.. and if there is something I have learned over the pass 4 years about the Bitcoin's community is that people usually run away pretty easily.

I don't like MtGox, but they are important for Bitcoin so I hope the best for them.

I agree with you.  I may be a little biased because I don't have any money stuck on there.   I know I would be worried/upset if I had a lot of coins stuck on there, but the fact that Karpeles has not run away is actually a decent sign that they are really trying to stick it out to make things right.   Their explanations for their problems were terrible, but typically owners of companies that are planning on just eating all of the customers money, are usually to a place with no US extradition by now...

People are quick to jump down Gox's throat, but they are also a big factor in bitcoin even reaching the triple digits.  Again, I don't have money stuck on there, and i feel really bad for those who do...

To be clear your other prediction failed.  You didn't predict an exchange would have a temporary fluke with their order book.   Then you tried to use that fluke to get people to send you BTC.   Most consider that type of thing a scam.    Now saying the BTC will trade below a $100 in the future isn't a prediction, any more than predicting that any given stock will go to zero.  Given enough time, it is sure to happen.

It wasn't even a lucky call.  Pretty much everyone was expecting a update from MtGox and they have a history of causing huge movements in the price of bitcoin.   The only luck was a fluke at bit-e that cause a bogus price print.    BitcoinSteve was only trying to squeeze the weak minded, 100% scam.    At the time I posted he would try something else if the call worked, and this thread is proof of that.

BTW if he says it is still Friday that means he is living on one of a few islands in the Pacific.

I've seen this scan so many times ... For example with stocks a guy will send 20,000 emails predicting something .... 1/2 one way 1/2 the other.   Then he will send 10,000 emails to ones it got right, then 5000, then 2500 will get an email telling they have to pay to get his next prediction.   I can't believe people fall for this.

The other possibility is that BitcoinSteve is involved in the DDOS attack.

because it was hardly known that Bitsamp had the problem too, what was widely known is that Mt Gox has the problem in a major way and that BTC also claims to have the problem.


Here's the thing, all during the time that Mt. Gox is suffereing with the problem if BTC doesn't go about $800  it will have major losses to make up from once the withdrawals are able to recommence.

Unlike others, I don't think MG simply let the funds stay in place but gambled them in other markets in an effort to earn some funds on the depressed market, but now that the market is stablied under $700 and often flirting with $500+ numbers, MtGox is in major trouble and will likely suffer a solvency issue.

so what crazy prediction is on deck for today/tomorrow? $1 LTC?

I think he meant last Friday...although he looks to be correct on the Gox value at least.   Bitcoinsteve was implying $100 btc straight across the board though, not just on one exchange...

Why do you imagine there are actually 500,000 bitcoins?
1) Many of the "coin" (gox balances apparently backed by bitcoins) will be being traded backwards and forwards to increase overall balance of gox-USD or gox-BTC)
2) Many of the coins may not have any real bitcoin behind them.

For months gox could have been creating fake balances on accounts, trading, taking out BTC, and leaving people with fake BTC or USD balances backed by nothing.

People are gambling with balances which may or may not symbolize real currency. They either accept they have nothing, or try and increase one of their balances in the hope they do correspond to real currency.
They are essentially gambling on whether GOX will live or die.

I think we can safely say that Bitcoinsteve knew something about what was going on with Gox.

Whether he was privy to meetings from inside Mtgox (he alluded to "the meeting I just had" in another post) or got wind of the double spend attack from the arse end of the Internet, he knew Gox was in deep shit.

Yet, he tried to milk this knowledge, and bitcoiners, fall all it was worth. And he definitely implied that ALL exchanges would hit $100, and not just for three brief minutes.

I think he's a small time dude who got lucky with info, but may yet be proved right nonetheless.

I will try to help from now on without asking for donations etc.. I really do not want them as btc will be virtually worthless within the next year.

People who own 2 BTC, having bought their first under 2 months ago, generally do not have insider knowledge.
The fact they are trying to "get behind" coins which have already been pumped and dumped openly by several thousand percent, also gives the impression of no insider knowledge, or even any ability to do simple sums and research.

He wasn't one of the hackers or cyber-criminals (state/institution sponsored or otherwise) who have been attacking Bitcoin, but he had word that it was in the pipelines at the very least.

Maybe not one of the hackers but he did try to use the BTC-e price fluke to milk bitcoin out of people that believed him.   That is how he honestly earned the scammer title.    While I do think it is possible that he also somehow knew of the hackers I don't have any proof of that.   ;)

You also don't have any proof that he wasn't one of the hackers. The hackers may have believed that their actions would destroy Bitcoin and destroy it within the week. But as with many battles, the outcome doesn't always turn out quite as one side envisages it will, regardless of how confident they are.

However, the very fact that he is on here trying to squeeze Bitcoin out of users on this forum, suggests that he was merely someone who heard rumours of what was in pipelines for Bitcoin. If this wasn't the case and he just 'fluked' it, then he may want to try playing the lottery as he clearly has the luck of the devil with him.

Possibly true....I had a dream 3-4 weeks ago now that Bitcoin was facing a 'death' event. I also dreamt about the funds in my Bitfinex account being funds that would just be stolen from me....I dreamt this twice and stopped trading there after second dream. The following week or two seen a BTC = $10K Bitcoin hack in Bitfinex (would my short position have been liquidated?) and then the $100 flash crashes on Bitfinex and of course BTC-e....those exchanges are infested (or perhaps run) by cyber thieves.

Every night, when I go to bad, I bet, the price will be 50$ higher when I wake up in the nex morning. A few times I was right.

But BitcoinSteve was not right. The price was never below 500$, but he said it will go under 100$. Gox does not count. He did not say "price will be below 100$ only on Gox". And he said it will be below 100 until 14.2. At this date the low was >300$.
