Title: Computer virus used to steal cryptos?
Post by: @oweljayr on July 12, 2018, 04:54:19 PM
As I have seen from a website about China's nabbing crypto thieves.  So, being a computer genius has a lot of advantages to get rich so easily with cryptocurrencies if they will not be caught.  Unlike us who makes clean living by trading, mining, investing and bounty hunting, they tend to get easy income in their professional thieves way.  Might be this is the reason why bitcoin's value is going down.  Just my thoughts..

Authorities in Shandong province have arrested 20 individuals for hijacking 3.89 million personal computers as part of a rogue cryptocurrency mining operation since 2015 that netted more than 15 million yuan (US$2.26 million).

It's not possible for such a low amount to move the price that much.

As bitcoin and crypto gaining more adoption and the price increasing, holders should expect more sophisticated malware to steal coins. So, anyone having anything with a value > 1000$ should invest in a hardware wallet, you'll sleep better knowing your coins are safe.

He just shared free downloadable plug-ins in group chats and public forums and used the host computer to mine virtual currencies without the knowledge of the owner, maybe it can be possible and yahoo had provided such information might be a credibility to really trust this news, And Ordinary computer users was an easy targets by yang because they don’t regularly check up on their servers which may be scanned by hackers for vulnerabilities, So it can be possible.

These thieves are annoying. They can't promote community development, but bring negative things to the encrypted world.

People are to blame for themselves, because they do not take sufficient protective measures for their computer and the crypto currency here absolutely at anything.

It's actually an interesting subjects of law and ethics. If you take advantage of someone's hardware without his knowledge, but at the same time you don't limit his abilities in any way, is it a crime? Many people whose computers were being used for mining didn't even notice and did not mine or plan to mine for themselves, so the hacker took advantage of their lack of knowledge and overall carelessness. He made money by using them, which is a bad thing, but he also did not make them lose money. Their computers were mining in the background only when these people were using them for other things, so they would be drawing power anyway at that given time whether they'd be infected or not.

Banks also have burglaries and clean accounts of money. Cryptocurrencies for a hacker are a tasty morsel. Especially since it is not an official currency and thefts are difficult to recover.

Yes that is right and we need to be too much careful and make some extra security to our wallets specially if we are using online wallet, where th chances of hacking your account is more. AS so many accident has already occurred, when all the exchanges are hacked, therefore they may be now providing extra security for their customers.

Bitcoin is secure currency but it depends on your transactions, while putting some personal information or a private key. Or there are other different ways to steal cryptos. Just remember basic things like be aware from phishing sites. And i suggest reliable thing for big investors of BTC. They should use hardware wallets. It's just an opinion.

After the largest Exchange in China (Bithum), now the Hackers use a virus by utilizing online game sites to mine coins on a home computer. this is very loss to people, of course, electricity costs will become very expensive when used to mine. hopefully this problem can be quickly resolved.

I think it's usually a crime if you access someone's computer without authorization. In the US (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Fraud_and_Abuse_Act):
Quote
The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) is a United States cybersecurity bill that was enacted in 1986 as an amendment to existing computer fraud law (18 U.S.C. § 1030), which had been included in the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984. The law prohibits accessing a computer without authorization, or in excess of authorization.

How much does CoinHive, etc. slow down your computer? Maybe they "paid" by suffering through slower processing times. :)

It will always be hacks to steal money. It's not just in the crypto world. There will always be scams, hacks, hijacks etc, with or without crypto.
Even banks (traditional ones) are targets of hackers to steal money. The reson with value has nothing to do with that, it's a mix of stuff.

Just for example of what i was saying

LOL that's an improper way of using your intelligence if you'll have this idea on your mind unless you really want to experience living behind the bars. You can say "IF" they will not be caught but not all the time you can flee from the authorities.

Unlike us who makes clean living by trading, mining, investing and bounty hunting, they tend to get easy income in their professional thieves way.
Better to eat with clean money. Don't get jealous if they become rich easily, fight a clean fight and work for yourselves in a clean way. Don't admire those people that are stealing others money.

Might be this is the reason why bitcoin's value is going down.  Just my thoughts..
More people selling bitcoin, value going down that's the reason.

It's possible but still the security of your assets depends on you.  That virus or any keyloger or malware can't inflict your computer if you will not click or download it to your computer. So always be vigilant not to fall in any free or giveaways and you need to install something on your computer.

For me, it is really possible for hackers to steal your wallet if your wallet is saved in your computer. If they have the access to your PC and for your wallets/keys with the use of malware/virus, therefore they can access your wallet easily. I suggest that do not save your passwords/keys (especially your wallet) in your PC. Maintain your PC and look out for threats that can make your PC vulnerable to hackers. Be careful and be sure in what website you are putting your passwords/keys for your wallet.

This is one of the main problems for all owners of crypto currency. Each user should have a high level of protection of their savings. But many are too lazy to make an effort to learn ways to protect, but there are a lot of them. and you need to use all these tools.

Hacking a computer to steal your bitcoin, as long as the computer is connected to the Internet, this is inevitable, we should put the wallet in a safer place.

This is nothing new actualy..
Unfortunately many Bitcoins were stolen with the help of different malwares and lack of protection on users side.
Especialy vulnerable are web wallets but mobile wallets could be endagered too.
Also it's not advisable to keep your coins at exchanges. They are not configured as wallets and are vulnerable to different attacks, malwares and threats.

It is possible to steal your Identity, Crypto and Other account informations by hackers by puting a malware on a file that you've downloaded that's i put some 2FA security on every account that i have, Hackers are very smart now they can steal your informations within a second so be careful what website you entered for and check if that site has a https:// and do not trust people who sends you a link or making a clickbait, Especially online bitcoin wallets are very easy for professional hackers to hijack it so we need to put so many security options to it.

many ways that hackers can do to steal user data by spreading infected viruses on computer networks. this is certainly not strange anymore, let alone cryptocurrency is worldwide and can easily invite crime to get results faster.
lately there is news that hackers can steal bitcoin in large enough quantities, it can justify the decline in bitcoin prices to date because of hackers who deliberately dump the bitcoin in large enough quantities so that the price continues to move at the lowest point

They weren't accessing it. They added the virus to commonly downloaded programs, like the bones featured on freeware download sites and set the programs to connect to a pool with the hacker's login. Technically he was never accessing their computers.

I'm sure it slows them down significantly, but that's not the case. They were mining for weeks or even months without knowing it, so either they didn't notice or they did notice and didn't care.

This restriction will just make themselves cannot learn more from the internet about this as per my thinking back in year ago, but its happening now.

Of course. I'm agree with you. Hackers can easily hack our computers using different methods. And they can steal our database very easily. They will get our Keystrokes, passwords, screen shots,etc.. Nowadays there are so many apps and software in the internet. Some of them are fake and hackers use them to hack our computer or mobile. Most apps asking about permissions for calling, gallery, camara, etc.. After that without looking up we Allow every single permission request. So finally we got hacked. Best thing is for our safe, we should use good internet security software and we must keep it up to date.

These are some of the reasons why you have to take good suggestions on how how take care of your tokens/coins seriously. For example many experts suggest desktop wallets and more especially hardware wallet like Trezor to ensure the safety of your funds. 2FA authentications at trading sites, bookmarking the official websites of exchanges are all very good ways that make it hard for hackers to steals your crypto.

Yes , a virus or malware can steal your info . Install keylog on your PC , etc . There are lot of thing a virus can do , so be wary when venturing the internet . i suggest you get a pc dedicated only to crypto transactions that is if your a bigtime player . Use a different PC for browsing or doing your day-to-day stuff in the internet , for you might not know it you already downloaded a virus embedded on some random files out there

The overall bitcoin system is non-hackable. Bitcoin security is more than any other banking system. In my opinion,  scam projects are the main factor behind the failure to grow bitcoin.

Well rhat's a fact. Anything you have online can be compromised with hacker becoming more and more sophisticated with the times. I agree in investing in an offline wallet since that's basically your best option to secure your coins. Spending for an offline wallet that's a lot more secure than an online wallet is logical if you keep a lot of btcs.

Where there is money involved there will be scams involved too. There are hundreds of phishing websites out there which steal people's data in order to steal money from them. Some softwares replace the copied address with theirs and some browsers are coded that they automatically start browser mining in your PC. Some websites also start the browser mining process in the background. We have to be careful in what we do when it comes to crypto  or else we might loose all that we have.

It will worsen as bitcoin gets mass adoption. Better keep a percentage of your hard-earned bitcoin for a purchase of a hardware wallet. Believe me, it will make things easier and safer for you.

I just bought a Ledger Nano hardware wallet,I am also alarmed by those viruses, malwares or keylogger that steals your info/private keys. I think its good to have a hardware wallet for security. Last year it was the ransomware that scares many. This people will ryto exhaust all means just to steal our crypto assets, be always mindful of it.

So many cryptocurrencies stealing methods by the hackers. That is why I don't click on any link whose source I don't know again. I received so many attractive emails directing me to click on links but I refused, no matter how attractive. Some airdrop are also used for this stealing nowadays because the forms ask for personal information that can easily help the hackers.

Regular computers are easy targets by those because they don't regularly check their servers that may be scanned by hackers for vulnerabilities, so that's possible.

As with any new innovation (especially a financial one), there will always be pimps, hustlers, thieves, etc. It comes with the territory. In the digital age, it is to be expected. Whenever there is good done, always expect the bad to be not so far away. It is the truth, but an ugly one. Some people just want a fist full of dollars,  while others just want a few dollars more.

You mentioned here about virus attacks, we should provide our pc the strong security it needs to make your system more secured. Checking can be a good practice for us so that you won't be able to commit any wrong inputs and avoid errors or funds lost. The possible intrusion of hackers will be opened during virus attacks send by malware programmers, and through security softwares it can be prevented.

Sure, the thieves are annoying. However, that is a problem a lot of people have - Even the biggest companies.

It's not something only about the Crypto world, but turns out Hackers are not stupid(obviously) and they know the value this kind of currencies have, not only know but for the future. Really effective way of retiring.

I do recognize a job well done, especially when the company with a lot of millions don't take properly security measures due to greed, they deserve it. However, i personally prefer the long path towards goals and i encourage others to learn and improve personally while on the way. Getting rich too quick can lead to bigger problems.

The best thing to do is to have a two-way authenticator or store these coins offline . Even virus in your computer cant penetrate if you use these kinds of method.

Here are some method on where to store it using offline method. This is the safest way though.
1. On a USB drive or other storage media
2. On a Paper wallet
3. On a bearer item such as a physical bitcoin
4. Use a offline Bitcoin Hardware wallet

Step 1 — Create a bootable USB flash drive.
Step 2 — Create a cold wallet.
Step 3 — Create a “watch-only” wallet in the main OS or mobile phone.
Step 4–Spend Bitcoins in a secured way.

I summarized the context from this blog : https://goo.gl/aZn2kg

Its a real possibility. most keep their profits in paper wallets , offline or in tight lockdown to be protected from viruses. some lose their profits in minutes due to lack of security. so its up to us to keep our information and profits as safe as possible

Well, if you don't take care of the assets you have, of course you will find them. well, for now I have rarely heard of the case, and the biggest case at the time was a virus that would erase all the data you have if you didn't pay using bitcoin. so, be careful.

If you really want to avoid being robbed by thiefs/viruses then you can invest ~100$ to buy a Nano Ledger S and you will definitely sleep better during the nights.

When I started to earn more and more tokens I felt that online Exchanges to not offer sufficient security and I bought a Ledger. Every time when using it you have a different feeling regarding the security of your funds.

Yes, I think this is also the reason for the decline in bitcoin prices, but there are also other factors that cause the price of bitcoin to decline, namely: the state prohibits bitcoin, banks prohibit bitcoin and there are also social media that prohibit advertising about crypto currencies.
investors have been reduced because they have suffered huge losses this year, therefore investors are afraid to invest again.

in my experience, blockchain can't be hacked, blockchain security is very strong, and they hackers can only hack victims' wallets and can't hack the blockchain system, so maybe Chinese keep their asset wallet in an easy stolen place, and if the price drops all assets because of hackers' problems they might succeed in hacking the wallet of rich people in China, or they managed to hack lots of rich Chinese wallets and make asset prices go down

Well, what I can conclude know what you have said is that, it only shows that we can actually protect our self and get rid of these thieves or computer virus if self neglect or carelessness is avoided. If someone is not that attentive to his or her account and suddenly these things happens, this is because he do not care enough or protective enough to his property. This must be a warning for other cryptocurrency users that they must care about their accounts and check it regularly.

So, the security of our computers is our own responsibility and always updates the anti-virus at all times so that our computers are always protected.

The network itself is safe but the accessibility is the one that would be the target of the hackers so that they can steal the cryptocurrencies. They would take advantage of those newbies who would easily believe what they are saying so that they can get free coins or perhaps free services.

Always be careful when someone asks you to download something to have free coins because most likely it has a virus that would have access to your gadgets and then take away your hard earned coins. Always be careful and do not attract the attention of the people by posting how much coins you have in social media and forums.

I think hackers who use the technique of spreading viruses on personal computers to steal cryptocurrency assets do not have a significant effect on price reductions in the crypto market. the most influential thing is when a big exchanger is attacked by hackers, but obviously it's not as simple as just spreading viruses and is very risky for the hackers themselves. the fact that the risk of hackers is already part of technology, there is no safe system because the system itself is made by humans, conventional banks that use digital / internet technology are very vulnerable to hacking, the most important thing now is how developers are able to contribute to solving this problem , minimizing internet crime.

phishers and hackers are the real problem when dealing with our cryptos because they are many reports about them that users lost hundreds and thousands of coins every single day which is verry alarming .

It is true that viruses that steal crypto enter via e-mail or links that we follow when browsing the internet. Hackers are very smart and they take advantage of our negligence when surfing because without realizing it on a laptop or PC there is a crypto wallet. My habit before closing the laptop is to activate the anti-virus and check whether there is a virus entering or not.

The virus can be of any type and direction, and given the current trends, the virus that steals the cryptos was only a matter of time

crypto virus? i never heard of it before , afaik there is no viruses that attacks our wallet or crypto account . besides , every pc or laptop owner do always have antiviruses installed on thier devices so its almost impossible that a virus can penetrate .

phishers and hackers are the real problem when dealing with our cryptos because they are many reports about them that users lost hundreds and thousands of coins every single day which is verry alarming .
Then you are probably ignorant about it and should gain more knowledge about securing your wallet or else you will end up losing every coins you have. There are viruses that can steal all your coins from your computer. This is one of the reasons people tend to use hardware wallets instead of desktop wallet, to keep their coins secure from getting hacked. The virus is another prime reason why people so isolated computers when storing huge amount of coins.

Is it only because of cryptocurrency theft that almost all cryptocurrency prices have decreased like now, maybe this is deliberately created to reduce the price of bitcoin and altcoin. at the moment I'm not sure Bitcoin can recover quickly as before, I prefer to sell rather than hold it

This hacker, thieves etc. They are the one that can down cryptocurrency in any ways, they just have the ability to create a virus that simply stole the acounts, so we must be sure that our acounts are safe, not to be able to supply any viruses to our computers and the security acounts must be securely for security that can not be easily taken over by others, hackers make everything to steal in any cost.

Sometimes it needs to be careful, that thieves can also use applications embedded in their own devices, they can control our devices with their applications embedded on our computers, if they download applications from the browser, then if instructed to install them on their devices itself, of course it will cause all files to change to be similar to the file that was downloaded before. So be careful downloading lots of files from the internet.

Crypto is a future digital currency. And we can use it anywhere. Because of which the risk of hacking our accounts is very high. That's why we need to be careful and if we are using online wallet, then we need to have some extra security.

You should understand that currency theft and fraud is not only a privilege of the cryptocurrency market. Such incidents occur everywhere in the Fiat market, as well as in the securities market, real estate and even precious metals. But as you can see their value from this is only growing, so your theory is fundamentally wrong and not logical.

Now Telegram is a big target for viruses and hackers, spammers, cheaters. They ar lurking everyone where on the internet and this is why we need more cybersecurity and more people to be brought to justice were stealing our money is concerned. I have been hacked and had lots of funds stolen from me since joining crypto and if I still had that money now I wouldn't be in such a low ebb of a place. I feel sad that these people are relentless to get away with hurting people and goes to show that too many nasty people are in crypto that need to be taken out. How do peeps expect mass adoption when you have too many nasty people in crypto that give it a bad name. Your average investor won't touch it with a barge pole until these peeps are cleaned out. Ethereum and Bitcoin, for example, has no mechanism to take out the hackers. There needs to be a way to put this in the code to recover funds back.

Unfortunately, there are same types of viruses written to steal crypto. Actually, in most cases they steal data that enable log in to your wallets or added places you save your coins and that enables perpetrator to steel your crypto. That is why is each and every one important to save your antivirus tool updated and be utterly cautious how safe is your entry to wallets, exchanges and linked.

Sometimes it happens that a person accidentally somewhere inserts his private key and without knowing it gives the opportunity to fraudsters to use your wallet. And when fraudulent actions begin to occur, a person accuses the antivirus or the unreliability of the system, instead of being more attentive.

I see this happening very often, and I have experienced it and recently my friend also experienced the same thing. and after I learned this will not happen if we use our device properly. because this virus will enter when we download something that is not clear, besides being careful when trying to connect the device with a WIFI network.

It is not so easy to hack a computer with all its corresponding security measures, if someone is so talented usually are much more comfortable and safe working for major technology firms such as Microsoft or Google, if you have all the security measures in place, you should not have problems.

Of course this will makes investors doubt to buy bitcoin, but one thing that must be concerned here is hacking itself is not an easy job, if you safe your coin in thrusted and strong online wallet such as blockchain.info then you don't need to be worry or if you have hardware wallet with full sync client then it is better. In this case, the dropping price is too extreeme so I don't think that it is the only one reason why bitcoin price fall this much, most probably is because many ICO project who sell their collected bitcoin to buy fiat to funding their project. But I think it's actually not a bad thing because the effect will be only for short term, the development that they do for cryptocurrency will increase the number of bitcoin adoption. Enjoy the fluctuations price, this is the time to buy bitcoin at low price, many people want to buy bitcoin at low price but when they have the chance then most of them are doubt and worry ::) ???
