I haven't touched Facebook for years; is it still the same Farmville-spamming dramallama it was when I left?

I've never used Facebook but from what i can see it is in no way dead or dying.

i love to use facebook but one is really happening  so many users use other social media site rather than Facebook

For me Facebook is dead and is a useless timewaster long ago.

Facebook is fun back then when everyone around you play the mini games like warbook and so on. But none of my friend is playing them anymore and went for MMORPG.. :(

Of course I use it. The funniest videos I ever watched was on facebook. It also help me find awesome videos on youtube that I never knew about. I use facebook for laughs. On the business side of things, I use it to build brand awareness.

reddit is way, way better for that. what makes hte top is crowdsourced, so if people like it then it will reach the frontpages.. on facebook, i get annoyed when people preach.. so i usually turn off feeds (of people who are excessive).

The only reason (or at least the main reason) why facebook is retaining people is that because most likely their friends are using it and it is a convenient way to know what they are up two and to communicate with them, and this is the sole reason why I'm still using it tbh, I just check it from time to time that's all for me

yeah, the thing is, once you have so many people locked into your ecosystem, people will become less likely to give up your service. i don't know what it's called, but a lot of sites let you log into your account via your facebook info.. because facebook accounts are almost as ubiquitous as e-mail accounts.

I only use facebook to lurk like a creeper, and see if there is any cute friends within mutal friends to fuk.

exactly and websites allowing you to log with your facebook credentiels goes both ways, because FB made it that way and want to make people more dependant on their system and those websites want the informations from your facebook account, which can be a tresor for some companies and I'm sure the facebook is the biggest gift to the NSA could ever dream of

Yeah, I would really like to delete my Facebook account. (I only use Twitter now :P) but over the years it's accumulated some good pictures and such so I really don't want to :/

You can deactivate your account in there settings. But not sure about completely deleting it.

You`ll eventually come back since it owns instragram, and almost everything now lol.

The dilemma I have is the fact that I have so many years of pictures and video saved up that it seems like it would hurt deactivating the account :P

Facebook is a decent political aggregate. It's also how I found out about bitcoin. I use it almost entirely for vacation pictures, kids pictures, and as my political soapbox. I consider it a personal victory when conservative friends share posts from libertarian pages. There are many instances where it was very likely they only found that page because of my posts.

I only use facebook so my lost friends can find me. I do not have any photos on there, just my simple profile. There was a time I had it installed on my phone and I can keep up with some of my friends' updates. Ever since they start putting ads in between the posts, I uninstalled it.

I do think facebook has reached a plateau and it is extremely difficult for it to hit another peak in the future, but it does have a massive global fan base which is impossible to ignore. It is may not be growing, but not dead, or dying.

look at their revenue. that's rock solid growth. they are getting rich by acquiring other companies and selling user data.

Hardly.  There are so many people addicted to social media its disgusting!  I have facebook and I keep certain people on there just for a good laugh.  They facebook everywhere they are, take pics of their foods, etc. 

I see more and more young people glued to their phones while at the pub instead of socializing with those around them.  Sadly social media is here to stay I'm afraid.

yeah, i think it's BS. social networking will continue to grow because we live in a society where everyone wants to be famous for the sake of being famous.. if facebook does start facing attrition, another guy will pop up and the game will be more level... that, or facebook will buy them out, kind of like instagram.

I disagree Facebook is alive and kicking. Facebook came to be part of our lives now which allows us to know the real time update on the persons we know. It is just like a news that gives us update on whats happening in the world.

I've noticed a dramatic drop in reach over the past year. I believe that people aren't spending a lot of time on Facebook, and those that do spend a lot of time there aren't looking at content, they're playing games.

I agree.  I have a few people on my friends list that have hundreds, and some, thousands of "friends" on their lists. I always think of this comic when I see them act on facebook like they are all real friends.

You see it all the time in pubs and restaurants.  Groups of young people at tables saying hardly anything to the group but they are on their phones (I'm assuming facebook) the entire time.  I'm even noticing that a lot of younger people have very few social skills when it comes to human interaction.

It's only going to get worse as more aspects of social media are introduced.  The Zombie apocalypse is coming, it's just in a different form than what we thought.

Well there is still no other location that people use to connect with people they know like facebook that said people did migrate from myspace and other locations a few years back so if someone builds a better communication system and can get people around the world to use it then we can see a replacement ^_^

I try not to get too conspiracy nutted out, but this is pretty much accurate. It makes people zombies and is really quite sad. Everywhere I look, people are glued to their phones. Hardly talk to each other. Every once in a while I see them get that sick smile (they just got a notification!) It's pretty sad that it seems so many are so contented by these social media interactions, so they will neglect the rest of their life (really keeping in touch with friends and family). And for sure, the fact that Facebook stores all information forever -- even unfinished search terms that you never entered -- is pretty scary.

It all depends, if your a social whore and have 4,999 friends, then your timeline is full of crap. But when you have like a realistic number of few dozen friends, and some family, good tool to keep up with your people. Also make sure to check your security and privacy settings, that is key.

I created my Facebook account due to pressure from some of my friends and relatives but I hardly login. When I login (probably twice a month), I quickly check for any pending requests or notifications and then log out (within 5 minutes).

Im still seeing people passing 5 hours a day at face, so its not dead

Well me personally opened a account way back before everyone did in my country(holland)
Because i have family in aruba and some other country's that already used facebook.
So i like it, because i can see what my family is doing in the picture's how my nieces and nephews are growing up.

Couldn't agree more. The platform that once was best for connecting consumers to products/services that they value, now makes the businesses pay double to find, convert, then retarget to drive conversation. Now, it's all about targeting and driving traffic directly to your website, not buying likes than buying to put your product back in front of the people you paid to put in the pool.

I think it's still very much alive for people who use it but they can't grow forever. I mean myspace was huge for a little while and that's gone now basically. Facebook has probably hit its max popularity, I mean even my 65 year old dad is on it.

Twitter seems just as crappy to me. Like FB, I was into it for a while. But it's overrun with advertising, people are just trying to gain a following and promote their crap products, etc. In the end it is just another shitty feed....

I have almost 2000 FB friends and using FB for quick communication and sharing news with my friends.
Great tool also to find friends after a long time, even after 20 or more years :) (My own experience).

The data seems to agree, they are at 2011 in terms of popularity. They are losing a lot, time will tell if they will be the next MySpace  :)

It all depends on who you follow. I follow mostly bitcoin sevices and crypto traders. Twitter is actually a really good scource of news. It depends on who you follow. And on the ads. I really don't see too many, and they aren't as intrusive and in your face as FB ads

facebook is still alive. Me myself i can't live without opening my account every single day. Facebook is a source of communication specially to family, friends who are in distant places. Facebook will remain for a long time unless the owner will give-up.

It's also worth nothing that facebook is used by intel orgs to map your social network.  Also what value is it in talking with people on facebook? I find it to be very superficial most of the time, it's also a time killer. So I stopped years ago.

Usually people just brag on facebook. Most normal people never tells about their problems, so while Aunt Jolly and Uncle Tom posts pictures of nice holliday vacations, their nice home and their new car, the fact that Jolly sometimes cries when going to sleep because she doesn't get the emotional connection she craves with Tom, i never posted.

The young bodybuilder posts a sixpack pic, and pics with girls at a party, proving that he's good looking and popular. You don't see the pics from when he tests positive for clamydia and needs to alert his sex partners.

You see when your distant friend receives a promotion. When he gets fired for acting unethically in his workplace, you don't hear anything.

You see your cousin going to high school, and you see pics from various events at his high school, but you never get to learn about his insecurities, his social fears, his lack of success with girls

On facebook, we're safe - we can only like stuff. Hate and dislike is unheard of. You can direct your own life, to make it look perfect in the eyes of others, you can seek approval and build a status among your friends. In your life, there's never bad days - everything is fantastic, so let everyone know it! Then you can rejoice with the other perfect friends, and when the occasional bad thing happens, you can give your support by writing: "I hope you heal up soon!" but not really meaning it, or just ignore all of that and hope you don't get bothered.

You can control your emotions online, nobody can see what you feel, so you can hide behind the keyboard. Nobody sees that you're crying when asked: "How are you?" You answer: "I'm ok" - like any robot.

The shades of grey, the wonderful things in life, it's not shared on facebook. Only shallow empty mirages that's not life, it's all fictional. Life's not petting Tigers, going to exotic places, jumping from a plane or sitting on an elephant or taking a picture with a monkey on your shoulder.

Life's so much more - and the most interesting place - is the mind of a human - most humans you get in touch with - you will only be able to learn a fraction about how they really are - the rest is hidden, and when you see them online you barely see anything, they're even more hidden.

If you want to be with a friend, why not call that friend and invite him or her over? Why not just go and visit that friend?

Why not leave the computer completely, leave your phone at home and just go fishing?

i have a few people on my facebook from elementary school and high school that I haven't seen since.  Through those friends I have been reconnected with friends that I see and talk to on a regular basis.  I met my current girlfriend through that process. 

My one buddy lives in England now, I can use the facebook chat to talk with him for free.  Since he is in a very different time zone, we can chat at our own pace when we have the time to comment back. I can also chat with multiple people at once while doing other things.

Through group chats it's very easy to organize large gatherings without trying to get everyone together at one time.

I agree that there are many issues with facebook, but it can serve a good purpose.

I'm not one to have 100's or even 1000's of friends on facebook though either.

Thanks, it was a crazy chain of events that likely would not have happened without facebook.  I only say that because oddly enough we live about 10 minutes from each other.  So I guess it is possible we could have ran into each other without facebook.

I do wish people would learn when to turn it off and use some sort of real contact though.  I have a couple buddies that I rarely hang out with now because they can't stay of facebook while we are out at the pub or wherever we end up.

Social media has it's uses, but in the end, I believe the bad parts of it will far outweigh it's good parts.

There's always two sides of the coin.

One negative side with social media is that it seems to favour entertainment and quick and easy stuff, it does not really go in depth. And people are very quick to jump to conclusions, and rumors spread fast. On the other hand, the most interesting thing with news articles is often the comments.

In the end, I think it's like anything else - use it responsibly. For some, it can become an obsession, and that's not healthy.

I still think facebook isn't dead, since facebook allready has tons of users, it only needs to use that fact in a good way and there you go, another 2 years cycle is around.

This is the only reason of their existence the huge member base and this is the reason they will not die overnight , but within next 5 years I can say 80% of the existing user will quit it not only fb but most of the social networking websites and we will see something new can't say how much different it will be compared to what we have now.
 
 ORKUT is officially going down on 30th of sep as the news confirmed by google itself , it was one of the first social networking website that i joined ..? and I know how Facebook took over it and made it obsolete. I won't get surprised if Same thing happens to facebook. the only question is " Who's gonna take over it .? " keep trying maybe you are the one.

twitter has no use for me.. no use but to watch famous people tweet shit. facebook, on the other hand, is a good way of getting in contact o your friends. that's all i use it for.. it's basically a glorified AIM for me.

Twitter is widely used by crypto traders. New developments are usually seen first in somebody's tweet. It is a great way to stay up to date.  :)

But facebook has way better user interface and IM included in it with video chat avaible.

Can anyone tell me some particular reasons why Celebs prefer Twitter over Facebook .. the only logic i feel applies is that twitter has a 140 character limit to every post , and celebs can use it to their advantage by linking external website for further information , on the other hand facebook has a character limit of 63,206 you can share a book in your post in facebook, does this make facebook more annoying compared to twitter .? besides that the only reason that I can think of is that twitter is a better marketing platform and has better marketing tools  compared to fb [just my opinion]

facebook pages are pretty irrelevant -- the interface is bad for reaching out to fans, but more importantly FB messed with the algorithms so that pages (without well paid promotion) would no longer show up in people's feeds very often.

i've heard they may be dipping their toes into the remittances market. could be a gold mine of a niche for them, having such a large, robust international network of users. for now, their business model may not be sustainable, though.

that's possible, but this isn't like Myspace. the network and data that FB has is very valuable and robust. if they play their cards right -- and they might be by potentially entering the remittances industry -- they could continue to be quite successful.

to me, it seems like facebook is more of a two-way social interaction.. twitter is more like one sided, where you are checking out a celebrity's page and postings.

twitter's also a good idea because of the 140 characters as you said.. in this day an age, people like to process their information short and terse.. otherwise it's too much thinking.

i personally have over 1 000 friends on FB, from school, job, clubs etc. everybody are there :)
Thanks to FB I was able to reconnect with my old school friends after 15 years.

Yep. It's cool, because when you're tired you can get on facebook and read about stuff happening in your community and watching your friends grow up and become father's/mother's. i think its pretty cool in my opinion, however it is definitely spyware, and they are selling your info to the highest bidder without a doubt.

I think everybody doing this, any online company as Google, Apple, Microsoft etc.
So, only way to prevent sharing of your private info is to be offline and never use Internet.

Facebook has become a part of my life. I think i won't be able to spend a week without Facebook. So i don't think Facebook is dead.

Well I only use it because I have a private group of a project I work in with some friends, and it seems good for that. And I still get some interesting things on the feed, from some pages I like, so it's not that dead I think.

I have only secret facebook with about 10 people who knows who I am, but I really hate it, Im there daily because of updates from websites i like, so it is good for infos, like RSS feed..but I feel like it is less and less lively, what makes me happy.

More than 10 people know who you are, they figured out who you are based on your data.

Facebook just bought Occulus Rift a couple months ago, I reckon their power is insanely high to buy that thing and they plan future interesting things for social networks. Im not gonna be part of that shit tho.

Many people are leaving Facebook again, true. But for most people it's simply the go-to location and means of communication. I don't think it will go down anytime soon, to be honest. There really needs to be something that goes fundamentally wrong first.

You have any proof to back up the claims?  Facebook is a money making machine and it's stock is hovering near an all time high, and it's users are still increasing. 

It isn't about to die anytime soon.

Whatever facebook does, people will stay frustrated for a little while and then will just take it. They are complaining about the new messenger but they're using it. Yes, it forces them to download more apps. Yes it invades privacy. But they're using it. Because they're aready addicted. Soon all the buzz will be over and people will get used to it.
There is also no good alternative where people could switch from Facebook.

Actually there is. I could've googled "facebook alternatives", but i already know one. It's Vk, russian-ukraininan facebook. You can hit on ladies there, they are often willing to talk. ;)
It doesn't force you to download stupid messegers, which is also and advantage. But, c'mon. We know that people not gonna start moving there when they have all their friends on FB already. Who's going to like their pictures?

I don't think Facebook is dead. I am a regular user of Facebook. It is the best to connect with friends and family for me. In my point of view Facebook is not dead yet. It is also a good platform for business.
