The RockMiner R3-Box is the evolution of the short lived RK-Box and is definitely an improvement. 36 ASICMiner BE200 chips are distributed across 2 mining
in a blade style arrangement, compared with with the RK-Box's cube style. A Raspberry Pi, USB hub and cabling is included to produce a self contained solution.

0b) What You Need (top) (#post_contents)
You will need a few accessories and a power supply to get started.

1) Powering (top) (#post_contents)
R3-Boxes do not come with a power supply, and you will need a typical computer PSU with 4xPCI-E 6 pin power connectors.  We also need to tell the PSU to
always be on, as there isn't a motherboard to do this. Cut a paper clip into a U and insert it into the green wire and either black wire to the side of the green
wire. Tape it up for safety. The power supply will now be controlled by its switch on the rear socket.

https://i.imgur.com/AXm1t8k.png
2) Cooling (top) (#post_contents)
The R3-Box is self sufficient in cooling terms and utilises custom aluminium finned heatsinks on the front and back of the boards. A 120mm NMB MAT
4715KL-04W-B56 fan blows through the heatsinks and is rather loud. The second set of heatsinks are about 10C hotter than the first due to the layout,
which can be corrected by the addition of a quiet 120mm fan at the other end of the miner. Once we get software control of the original can, we can then tone
down the speed of original fan without impacting cooling performance. Its worth noting that the fan header is 4 pin but with a split pin configuration, and
so not all normal fans can be used.

3) Case (top) (#post_contents)
An open steel case is used as the frame, and comprises of just two end stands. Units are adding significant strength to the miner. Units are only stackable
when mounted on their sides due to the interference of the PCI-E and Raspberry Pi wires. Each miner measures 400 x 170 x 190mm, weighs 4.5kg and 5.5kg
when shipped and packed.

https://i.imgur.com/AXm1t8k.png
4) Configuration (top) (#post_contents)
R3-Boxes can be run using CGMiner on a host Windows PC, however as they come with a Raspberry Pi (http://goo.gl/g769Oy) the guide will concentrate on this.

Wiring:
  • Plug in the SD card into the Raspberry Pi.
  • Plug in mini USB to USB cable from the central USB hub to the Raspberry Pi.
  • Unscrew the two golden standoffs on the fan end of the miner and slide the Raspberry Pi onto it. Rescrew in the standoffs to secure the Pi in place.
  • Plug in the four green standoff boards (green rectangles with two rows of pins on the back). The texts on each board should be upright. Units
may ship with these already on.
  • Plug in the four white USB cables from the USB hub to the white 4 pin header on these standoff boards. Note, DO NOT plug the cable into the mining
board directly, it will not work (see pictures below if unsure).
  • Plug in the black cable from one of the 4 pin headers ON the mining board directly onto the Raspberry Pi's outermost six pins. The red wire should
face away from the Pi. This cable is acting as the power cable for the Raspberry Pi and no external power is required.
  • Plug in the four PCI-E cables to the miner.

Software:
  • Power on the power supply using its switch at the back.
  • Using a browser, navigate to 192.168.1.254 (http://192.168.1.254) - this goes to the R3-Box's configuration page.
  • Navigate to the page "Set IP". Enter your desired IP address if you want to change, and your gateway (router) address if it is not correct. Click Update.
  • Using a browser, navigate to the IP you have just set, or back to 192.168.1.254 (http://192.168.1.254)if unchanged.
  • Navigate to the page "Pools". Enter your pool information in the below format. Click "Update" and then "Restart".
  • Navigate to the page "Sync Time" and select your time zone. Click "Update".
  • Navigate to the page "Home" to check mining has started.

5) Troubleshooting (top) (#post_contents)
ProblemSolution
How.can.I.upgrade.to.the.latest.firmware?- Download an SSH client (http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe) and install it onto a Windows PC. Open it, and enter the IP of the miner (192.168.1.254 etc).
Press open, okay to any popup message and login with the username "root" and password "rockminer".
Type "nano upgrade.sh", and then make sure the following lines are as follows:

#!/bin/sh
cd /root
git clone https://github.com/rockminerinc/RockWeb.git
cp /root/RockWeb/* /usr/share/nginx/www/ -avpf
rm -rf /root/RockWeb

Press ctrl+x to save and exit afterwards. Type "chmod 777 upgrade.sh" and "./upgrade.sh" to issue the upgrade to
your miner. Do not interrupt the process.

Another excellent guide by Dogie.

He / She / They are the go to people on forum for setting up your new miner.

Will that firmware update work for the rk-Box also? They are basicly the same 4 blades.

Maybe, would take about 10 minutes to try if you've got an RK (which I don't), if we can track down an image file for this. I might have to rip one.

Could you add a step on how to image an sd card for an R3 please?

Will do if I can get an official copy of the SD card from somewhere. Cant find it on the repositories yet.

dogie,

thanks for another great review. Any idea what the upgrades are compared to the rocket box? Seems by looking at the pictures they cleaned up the design a bit. Any other real world things?

Steve

Can we not use normal USB mini to usb cables or do we have to use USB-MCU cable to connect up the boards?

They have done something because these babies are tons more stable. No need to wait 1-2 hours to warm up. Straight out of the gate i am getting 490 - 500 gh/s on mine with no configuration. Simply plug and play. Here are some pictures:

Screenshot of cgminer in webUI:

infact i think these will top 500+ GH no problem. This is the real Antminer S3 Killer right here!!!

Dogie, sorry i know my camera is not up to much but i had to share this!

Not if you want to use the onboard hub. Strictly the unit is already on its side as pictured, so its not really a problem at all. Look at the end pieces and where the screws are for the correct orientation and stacking.

I'm not sure, I can't see any reason why you couldn't use the mini to usb directly (not tried it) as that's all its doing anyway. You do need the little green standoff PCB though, it doesn't work directly to the mining card.

infact i think these will top 500+ GH no problem. This is the real Antminer S3 Killer right here!!!

Look at your reject rate, you won't be getting that at the pool.

It doesn't mean anything at this point given the 10%+ rejects...

I'd be willing to bet the S3 doesn't have this problem when it's released and actual hashrates will be comparable.

Anyone know if the RK/R3 miners can be connected to a Windows PC via USB?
I guess it couldn't hurt to try eh?

Yes, they can.  There's info in one of the other rockminer threads...will dig it up for you when I get a minute.

Awesome, thanks mate!

I was able to get MultiMiner to detect my RK-Box and it is hashing away (only 80 Gh/s per blade but I have yet to move my R-Box miners and test a higher FREQ-currently 290)

Either way, stoked to have the rocket-miner hashing in MultiMiner!

I am more interested in what the pool says it sees from this.  When the error rate is that high the pool tells you more about what the effect is on the number of shares you are getting.
For the cost difference over the Ant S3 the Rock R3 is going to need to be at 580+ Gh/s with 2-3% rejects to reach parity.  Assuming the S3 performs as advertised.  Although, even with that if your a bigger a miner you would have to consider the increased power draw of the R3 before slapping 10 on the shelves.

510 - 10% is 449 at the pool, which is what I'm seeing here.

I cannot confirm Windows 8 but I have R-Box and RK-Box both running on Win7 x64, though they are hashing WAY lower than they should be (60Gh/s per blade currently  :'( )

The proper driver is available here...

OK, I got the 4 r3rockbox blades recognized and 5 rbox miners. When I start cgminer 4.4.1 they all come on and the rbox's get up to 30gh/s but the 4 r3 blades only show 6-10 gh/s and keep restarting, after about a minute cgminer closes. Now it wont start, unplug the r3rockbox and the 5 rbox's work fine. Don't know what to do...
I dont have a clue what to do......

Actually I am using MultiMiner (www.multiminerapp.com)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=248173.0

I just heard Windows/CGMiner/RK,R3,R-Box miners DO NOT play well with the SiLabs drivers I linked

MultiMiner uses BFGMiner for the backend so the SiLabs drivers work great with MultiMiner but for CGMiner I was told to use the Zadig driver when using CGMiner/Windows combo

Update:  Firmware upgrade instructions for r3 does work with rk-Box with pi. On my two units(each has a pi) I had to ssh with pi then exit, then ssh a second time to allow for update. The first time you ssh to pi a corrupted dadabase error comes up, but once you fully exit and go back in everything works fine and update is applied. You can now adjust freq's at bottom of pools page.

Just pull the lan cable out of the pi (stops hashing) for 3-4min to see if the fan speed reduces

Yes, or just a simple linux whether arch/debian/ubuntu, that provides a solid miner in which there aren't issues following the instructions :(

I've tried configuring others through compile and I end up with icarus options not being enabled. I am sure there is many people who would prefer their own raspbi running whatever they want instead of forcing rock's webui to take over one pi

I'm pretty busy at the moment, and haven't as these come with their own Pi and OS. If you want to make your own CGminer, you can combine the noncetech guide with the cgminer part of the r-box guide, skipping over zadig.

Dogie, by any chance could I motivate you in creating some form of additional cooling to the R3 Box guide? :)

Maybe compiling a list of different types of heatsinks (purchased cheap) that can be applied all around the different things of the miner, such as mosfets, to provide additional cooling and possibly prolong the life of the unit?

Mosfets and vregs are designed to operate up to 125C so it won't make a difference. I'm also not a fan of adding hovering metal components to a PCB when not required (hence I never recommended 32 of them on the S1...).

What will make a difference is adding a 4 pin fan onto the other end to get rid of the huge temperature difference between the front and back boards. The header is split pin so you can't use any old fan.

indeed, the fan I agree with, the rest not so much.

Just because something is rated to 125C doesn't mean it performs at it's best or longest when pushed to the limits. These units don't have 2year warranty or even 1year warranty so my goal is not having to repair popped/melted/oozing capacitors or burnt mosfets. Same goes for using 1299w on a 1300w power supply. There is a reason people use good thermal adhesive ;) I wouldn't want a heatsink falling on my board creating some fireworks!

I do appreciate you responding I will just take the guide for what it is and keep the rest towards the community

Get yourself an infrared temp probe and have a look at some of the board temps. I'd be surprised if you saw components over 70C. In terms of failure rates, that's statistically insignificant compared to 50C. You're probably more likely to cause damage trying to mess with them then letting them do their own things. They will not be the source of your failure.

You are right, I should probably get a probe and see what is running the hottest so I can apply the proper heat sinks and proper adhesives.

Any chance you know of the safe/recommended/max temperatures of the chips themselves?

Yea I just power everything down and restart that usually fixes it. I have been having more stability problems lately they seem to be getting worse. I have a pi on each unit and they crash a few times a day. I have not had the time to load cgminer on raspian but Im going to try tonight.

My R3 has been running for a while, and I have tried some different setups via Rockminer web. (Btw, is v0.94 the latest firmware?)

My stats: 469 GH/s average (about 430 GH/s poolside)
It's running at freq 320M with 8,15 % reject rate. At 300M the hash is a bit higher but the reject rate goes up to about 13% if I remember right.

Any suggestions for a better setup? Can I cut down the reject rate somehow?

Any suggestions for a better setup? Can I cut down the reject rate somehow?

.94 is the latest I've been using. 470 is a bit lower than 490 or so I'd expect, what PSU are you running? Reject rate of 8% is pretty standard, 13% isn't.

My R3 has been running for a while, and I have tried some different setups via Rockminer web. (Btw, is v0.94 the latest firmware?)

My stats: 469 GH/s average (about 430 GH/s poolside)

I'm using a Corsair CX750M. One blade is a bit slower, may be caused by the 6-pin extension, haven't tried to switch.

Hey dogie, just thought i would say keep up the good work mate, you make life a bit easier for alot of people out there, and dont often get thanked for it, so cheers mate

Seperate issue, has any one else noticed that rockminers web interface has done nothing but remove information, there was a problem with HW errors so they removed that stat, and said it was fixed, then specific blades where outperforming others in terms of rejects, so they removed that stat, then the Rasp pi kept rebooting all the time so they removed the uptime clock, and said that was fixed, i personally think it a bit strange that they say our problem is fixed with the new images but we cant check and see because they remove the info related to the original problem, i would kike to make it clear at this point that even if i cant see it on there web interface, i know it is still happening, according to my pool stats nothing has changed at all over 3 image updates, any one else seeing this happening

I used the upgrade.sh feature and am now on .94, i had the first image released for the rk-box though originally which has tons of info compared to what i am seeing now, i should also note i have 2 sporadic crashes over night, they are only momentary by the looks of it, but enough time to register on the charts, which has been the case since the originals, this is an issue with the pi or its software though as i have another smaller unit (just 2 rk blades) strapped together running on a computer, and they do great 2 percent rejects max around 240ghs average with no overclock and no random crashing, so i am going to assume (in my noobiness wisdom lol) that its something with the pi software being used, as the pi themselves are great little things

On .94 I still have reject rate and individual blade hash rates, can you show me a screenshot?

Yeah the total reject is still there up the top, but it used to have another box next to the hash rate of each blade telling you the HW and Reject rate for that individual blade, ill load up one of the old images i still have on my computer and show you a screen shot of it in a while, just sorting through some other stuff aswell trying to get some software to run correctly, but yeah all i can see is stuff being removed from the image so you cant see the problems, which i would once again like to point out are a problem with the software on the image, and not the miner as my computer runs them like champions
(dont want people thinking im bashing a perfectly good bit of hardware, its the half done software im having issues with lol)

Got an R4 box, which came with the PI, but no image.
I tried to DL the image from the rockminer website, but it's corrupt when I try to unzip.
Im looking for an image for the PI to run this on.
Can anyone point me to a link?

I am having problems with the r3-box restarting very often and every 1-8hrs it hangs on restarting and just shows "cgminer is restarting" at the top in of the interface in red three times but it never does and just hangs and never starts mining again. Has anyone else had issues with this?

I found this when translating rockminers site:

Quote
Raspberry send frequent restart

1 ambient temperature is too high lead (above 37 degrees), please try to keep around the mining machine ventilation.
2. SD card is faulty, by re-programming the mirror or replace the SD card solved.
3 with a USB data cable shorted lead to instability, check whether the USB cable OK.

nr. 1 is definitely not a problem, And if the sd card is corrupted should it  not be not mining at all?

Has anyone succesfully ran it on a windows pc with cgminer? (can you use a stock cgminer 4.5.0 (which supports r-box) or do you need their fork?) because then i could use cgwatcher to reboot when no shares are accepted or perhaps identify if the problem is in the miner itself or in the pi.....

That isn't true about the SD card corruption, sectors can have errors and it partially work. You can try running with 1 module for a while and see if you still get restarts. Monitor the temps before a restart.

Just go to rockminer.com then downloads, I don't want to give you a direct link because it will sit here forever and eventually not be the latest one.

Thanks, that is much better. The rockminer website took me to the first link, all in Chinese, so that's why I was stuck on what to DL.
It would be nice to place a link to the sourceforge directory (not the specific file) in your guide.

Multiple attempts to download ZIP file on home and work machines always resulted in corrupt image.
Tried 2 different PI's, but couldn't get image to boot.
Then I tried to plug into a Windows host and made some progress, but it's still not correct.
While I don't see the USB device showing up in the list of available devices, the cgminer instance is telling me that it sees somthing out on the USB bus. It looks like maybe the incorrect driver, but not sure what driver I should be using.
Any suggestions on how to get cgminer to recognize and run the R4 miner?

I installed the driver, and it's working better now.
Each of the 4 blades is showing up, but at a much slower speed than anticipated.
Ive tried 2 different pools, but not making a difference.
This should be around 450GHs, but instead im getting:

You need to update your cgminer. Use version 4.5.0 from the official cgminer website here:

http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/

Also it will be around 500 in my experience with the R4. What power supply are you using at the moment?

Ill try the new cgminer today. Just woke-up right now...
The PSU is a Seasonic X1050.
Neither the R4 nor the Seasonic are even getting warm. Staying quite cool due to low hashrate.
Another question. I have 2 drivers installed, one is for the CP2102, the other CP210x.

hmm...weird, that power supply sounds like it can more than handle the power requirements of the R4.
It really looks to me like it is being recognised only as a R-box, hence the 30+ gh/s speed.
What does your bat file look like? Do you mind posting it here, just to make sure there is nothing missing or wrong in that.

Another question. I have 2 drivers installed, one is for the CP2102, the other CP210x.

strange again, there is definitely something wrong with the configuration of the drivers or cgminer. Are these two drivers in the device manager. I would uninstall CP210x as this might be causing problems. Could you possible post a screenshot of your device manager please. Also when you open zadig and select list all devices, can you see 4 x CP2102 and do they all say WinUSB driver installed? I would uninstall all the drivers and start again from scratch. Also try it with cgminer 4.5.0.

Great! As your PSU is running cool, i would suggest setting your freq to 350, that should make the speed increase.

Add --rock-freq 350 to your batfile. Mine looks like this:

cgminer.exe --icarus-options 115200:1:1 --rock-freq 350 -o stratum.d7.lt:3333 -u iloveppcoin.2 -p 12345

something to do with the chip. I was told to use it by ckolivas so throw it in. Like i said, every R4 i test has been between 480-520 so i will be surprised if yours can't go that high too.

The best frequencies in my opinion are 320 or 350

Be200 chips in this design are rated to 280 (250 is ideal for this chip) max on the frequency, anything more results in more HW and rejects than actual accepted shares, klintay has a stake though as owner operator of eyeboot (who resell these units) in making sure you all think these units can do over 500gh, go to rockminers official site, even they advertise them as 400-450 at max, and they provide alot more information about the units aswell, stop telling everyone to dangerously overclock there units klint, it doesnt matter to you as you will use the crap out of a unit and then sell to it some poor sap like me, but we actually plan on keeping and using the equipment so jacking up the freqency to 350 and the power consumption to 1200 watts and beyond is not a good idea people

And the icarus options are for CPU communication i think brother, i remember it having something to do with the CPU, the way these guys are set up they use a good bit of processing power from the controller to actually work, hence the icarus options added there, i think it is what was causing the problems with the rasp-pi controllers, cause they have very tiny cores
