Hello everyone.

When I see there are too many ICO and shitcoins on novaexchange. I keep asking myself: do we really need blockchain technology?

In case of Bitcoin. Of course, I agree.
What about ETH? I agree too.

But, have a look at the others on the market. I don't even know why should people use their service. There is no real use in real life.

An ad management system on blockchain? - We already had Google Ads & Facebook Ads.
A social network on blockchain? (steem) - Do we? I don't see anything but a centralized forum hosted on a random hosting using its currency to pay for the writers.

There are too many projects  that we don't really need it on blockchain.

Sometimes, I think there is a black swan (Blockchain is useless in real life) lurking around.

This is not so. Blockchain technology is an essential step to real democracy. Of course the government would be against it, but it all depends on people. For example, based on the blockchain, you can build a system of elections and recall of politicians. And much more.

We need blockchain technology it is something new unique and beneficial. Do we need all shitcoins and useless project based on blockchain technology? Not really.
But market and life will verify everything, worthless projects will be abandoned and die out, there is no need to worry.
I am sure that people were asking the same thing about the internet - why do we need it when there are so many useless websites around?

Even if a project is similar to something that really exist in real life that doesnt use blockchain tech, it would be easier for crypto users to use the one with blockchain system on it. An ad management system on blockchain would put ease to those who would like to advertise on faucets or crypto related blogs. It also applies for others although you are right that many shitcoins are just shit projects not ever worth using and has no use in real life and one great example is your example on social networking on blockchain because like you I think cryptoworld does not really need it.

The Bolckchain technology has shown to us that it is universal technology for use not only by digital currencies' projects. I heard that some ordinary companies start to use Blockchain technology in their activity, such as garbage utilizing fabrics and banks. I think if the technology would not show itself from better side they all would continue to use old methods in their work. But Blockchain is not just a fashion word, it is a really progressive thing which can be used in many process around us and our life.

Of course we need blockchain technology.
I really do not know much about coding, but the blockchain technology is something that makes storing information safer and protects it from being altered.
That is something very important in the IT business.
Many businesses try options to use this technology for their purposes, sooner or later we  will see it in many forms in our every day life.

There are indeed a lot of coins (with their own blockchain), a lot of tokens (which use established coins' block) indeed.
Many are useless indeed.
But some bring innovation. Some are good projects. Some are just competition to existing projects. All these are good. Innovation will bring some blockchains closer to perfection, competition between projects (businesses!) is good since will bring you a better "product" or a better price.

You said there are FB ads and Google ads. Why not more? Some will pay better, some will bot be so intrusive, I don't know.
If there would be only one bakery chain in your country, you'll buy the worse quality and most expensive bread. Is that what you want?!

What we need the most is a decentralized store of value. We are going to need this specially on times of total chaos when it comes to fiat money in general. The geopolitical situation is tense. World War 3 isn't that far fetched at this point. I hope it doesn't come down to that, but it's a possibility.

What we need is decentralized gold, not a way to buy some starbucks coffee. Bitcoin is our decentralized gold, and we must protect it, by fighting the Roger Vers, the Mike Hearns, and the Jeff Garziks of this world, and anyone that wants to hardfork it into a mess for that matter.

All this ICO bollocks is very new.  A year ago, most ICOs would at least be vaguely legitimate projects with a real goal.  Currently due to crypto's massive rise, people are trying to hop on and make loads of money from lazy looking whitepapers and simple projects.

This current mania and unnecessary bull market does in no way detract from the importance of blockchain technology.  The following are just a few ways in which its decentralised verification can be useful:

-Transparency in banking and the creation of money

-Oracles (smart contracts which check publicly available information to create conditional payments, safe P2P gambling and other use cases, see Byteball).
-Cloud storage (not strictly using a blockchain, see MaidSafe).
-Storage of ownership records such as gun ownership which are important to be publicly available.

It's not because we already have similar services for certain blockchain solutions that it's not a good idea to do those things via blockchain instead.
It's far better to have an honest decentralized system in place, instead of relying on some centralized authority, like Google.

Most of these blockchain solutions might not even get off the ground, but in some cases they will replace those services that are now being provided by companies who are just in it for the profit.

We need blockchain to keep governments honest. A lot of the time we CANNOT see where the money is going, if it was spent, how much left there, how much we need, shady deals given to contractors who get paid wayyyyy to much.

IFbtc was involved in this we could easily know and see government corruptin, publically and in real time.

This especially needs to happen in the USA where lobbyists and crony capitalism happens every day

For me, without the Blockchain, there will be no digital currency. Blockchain prevents the double spending. If we will be putting bitcoin without the BLock chain, there will be a lot of people not using bitcoin maybe no one because it will be just double spent. Also, there are a lot of new technologies that making use of this Block chain, I think it will be really cool.

Most of these projects will fail anyway. In a lot of cases blockchains wouldn't even be necessary to allow for decentralization, but obviously there's more money in issuing more or less pointless tokens. In addition to that we are seeing the beginnings of centralized / federated blockchains such as JP Morgan's Quorum, so we're at a point were blockchains are not even necessarily decentralized anymore.

It's actually kinda saddening that people only care about decentralization to the point where there's money to be made. I don't see many people hosting their own mail servers or supporting decentralized social networks such as diaspora (I think they actually closed shop anyways).

Either way, while most of these ICOs will turn out to be nothing more than money sinks, there might be a blockchain use case somewhere amongst this cesspool of hype that may actually revolutionize the world in the way that Bitcoin did. I wouldn't bet on it, but this alone may make all the experimentation that is currently going on be worth it.

I think blockchain technology is essential, it served as a powerful record keeping of all the events and transactions.  It also save important sign message that is can only be verified by the address that created the sign message.  In short blockchain tech prevents fraud and fake or counterfeiting.  With this i believe we need blockchain technology to address trust issues.

Have you heard about blockchain voting? Or maybe about blockchain provably fair system for gambling? There are so many nice and useful projects out there.
The reason why so many projects are started on blockchain is brainstorming. People are trying out different ideas, testing the system to find what is interesting and what more can be developed. It's the same with all new technologies.

Ad system on blockchain could be good (if it gets popular) btcause google and fb have retarded policy but yes, there is nothing about benefits of blockchain.
A possibility to create your own shitcoin is good because it is simple af and maybe one day some small country will establish their own one and stop using fiat.
But yes, hype is real and a lot of people trying to use blockchain where centralized systems are working fine.

On this matter here, I don't have no doubts that digital currency is the reason why blockchain existed for long years and now the networks got more stronger in terms of IT capability particularly on it's privacy. Bitcoin really needed blockchain, and without it everything will turns out to non sense and maybe there were lots of problems on the network might possibly occur. So in conclusion to that, bitcoin and blockchain can be considered as partners whose being together on both good times and bad times.

Everything is changing with blockchain technology. So yes we need blockchain.
Today we are using for economic purposes but later we will see blockchain on every stage of our lifes.

Blockchain is not just limited to running the ICO projects but it is more than that. It has evolved recently during the repeat active developments. The crypto credit cards, debit cards, instant payment system are the new development going which will help us use the crypto currencies directly from the blockchain to our real world. Then you will see how important it is. If blockchain is not there then there it's like "having universe with no stars, galaxies and life in it", the empty darkness and nothing else. Just imagine blockchain the same way, it has many usage but the fact is it's not evolved to your and mine expectations yet. Just hold tight until we discover this universe for something more intelligent.

you are confusing two different things here:
- the technology
- shit pretending to be technology ;)

the blockchain technology is actually something that many are interested in. many big corporations are currently working on it. many good coins like bitcoin are using it. and it is pretty useful.

but what you have been seeing as ICOs are that shit that is pretending to be "technology" but it is a cheap rip off, created for a quick profit making and nothing more. they don't care about anything, it is the simple copy paste of code around an abstract idea with no real usage.

Yes we do. Why would you think that we don't? Because there are many things being developed in connection with BC and some of them end up being failures? What about all those that end up being gamechangers? I think we do need every technology, because it can always be used as a base for future development.

For big businesses with an internet presence, one of their biggest concerns may be downtime. Amazon.com being down for a few hours can represent millions in lost revenue. The blockchain technology is a very innovative one and can have many applications. In fact, there are now many governments or regimes that are looking at blockchain to improve their services to the people and yes one day they can be adopting blockchain to improve transparency with elections.

Instead of calling them shit projects, we should call it experimentation. Forget about blockchain. Everyday tons of startups come. Not everyone is successful. Same is the case with ICOs. People experiment with blockchain technology in many ways that might sound BS to you. But there might be customers for that. In starting, many projects sound shit but many have been successful later. You never know. There is no harm in trying though.

I believe that indeed we need blockchain tech as a whole (the network or protocol), which has many uses (financial and non financial) with many companies and groups of talented individuals already amazing building products on it.

On the financial side, and on top of whatever implementation of blockchain one fancies, we have the "tokens/coins". Those "currencies" actually represent different financial instruments, traded at exchanges, with different liquidities, valuation swings, some going bust other surviving (like the counterparts in the "real world").

When it gets really interesting (and tricky) is on the venture investment side of things (on top of tokens), with ICOs. Those are actually unregulated venture capital on steroids, with insane risk and insane payoffs. Here, like the real world of ventures we have everything...scams, shitcoins, good ideas and interesting projects to invest (yep, there are some :P). Unlike the real world counterparts however, there is a very low barrier of entry (aka: everyone and their dog can ICO) and sketchy due diligence, with few trusted information brokers.

Many people call it "shitcoins" but even in the stock market there are "penny stocks" which are the same garbage.

There are many things that don't need to be decentralised, but that doesn't mean that these things shouldn't. Also as long as there is liquidity in the market for these coins, they will never die making them useful to traders.

There are some other projects that are necessary, we need decentralized exchanges and so some have appeared, there is also a project about a decentralized internet and if successful that is a game changer.

Everyone keeps writing about blockchain and how important it is. I agree that without blockchain our world of cryptos would have probably never appeared. And yet is this technology really essential for any kind of cryptocurrency? I don't think so. I mean, just take a look at IOTA project. I don't know whether it is awesome but we can say for sure that it is an attempt to make something absolutely different. It is built on graphs, not chains of blocks. Graphs aren't really new to the world, they are used in logistics, for example. I believe iota is or soon will be able to show that cryptocurrencies can really be made in different ways.

Many people who can not see it because the level of its use is still limited potential and cannot be applied to real business, this makes sense because the virtual mode is still included in the era of development, I think blockchain technology can help the world economy, peer-to-peer system is still illegal in various businesses but this can change the economic pattern verbally.

I think we do need blockchain technology. The perfect scenario for this use is a coin that specialize in hosting (so we can have decentralized hosting), a coin to pay the writer (we have a lot of it) and a coin that specialize in advertisement.

What do you mean it has no use in real life? These are just some of the links I've pulled in just a few seconds of scrolling on the cointelegraph website and as you can see, the blockchain usage is spreading outside bitcoin quite quickly.

yeah Blockchain is a foundational technology: It has the potential to create new foundations for our economic and social systems. But while the impact will be enormous, it will take decades for blockchain to seep into our economic and social infrastructure. it just i think.

Lets be honest with ourselves. The big reason why we are interested in blockchains and cryptocurrencies is because we could sometimes make easy money with it. These markets are very volatile and the volatility makes them profitable to trade if you know what youre doing.

I think every business on service industry and providing online sale can grow better their business by this blockchain technology. blockchain technologies is a very important technology for a lot of the people because it is not the technology of the bitcoin or the crypto currency only but the currency of the whole world so it is the reason blockchain is very important for us. I respect your opinion but I beg to differ with your statement, I don't think that Blockchain is useless at all. We might not see the practical use of it as of now but banks are trying it to use blockchain to reduce their transaction cost. Blockchain has a scope in most of the sectors,

I am optimistic about this technology and I believe we will be using Blockchain in multiple sectors in the coming years. It might take a decade too.

The market will decide what is needed and what is not when it compes to blockchain apps. Right now lots of altcoins in their ICO's have some big value given as a credit to them, but very few present any real working results, and many of them are far away from 100% realization. Take even ETH for example - do you know any working smart contract apps? The first time they have tried to build something with it, the DAO fiasco happened. But what it is even worse is those private blockchains - they have almost nothing in common with Bitcoin and just trying to steal it's brand.

what is this statement there are so many ways that blockchain can only provide and we all know that without blockchain all of the btc holders will be crying by now, the altcoins are different but also we all know that without blockchains altcoin can do their own system.

on point here. Blockchain technology is not all about currency, it offers a brand new technology that is feared by some politicians and bankers. From Email to currency to social media and other systems like agencies and programs ,blockchain technology can coexist there. This is a trillion worth technology and we must not underestimate this. Its true that some are taking advantage of it and making some promising overview of project but in the end what they really want is the money that's why they are making some shitcoins or a coin that is once a gold but left out alone by its supporters.
On the other side of the moon imagine a very big company like Microsoft Giant build a really big platform that is using the blockchain it would improve their system exponentially especially when they've created a coin that can be mine.

We need blockchain technology because in the future it will play a big role because we can use it to do things virtually and we don't need to set things physically like payments because with blockchain technology it is now very easy to get things done because it is already in the internet and the hassle is not a problem anymore for the future generation.

Why should I not think blockhain technology is a very good breakthrough for the progress of a project. but it all takes a process and I do not think it will be as easy as it sounds. blockhain technology is a process that uses internet network and I think not everyone will accept this quickly. because not everyone can understand about the technology need to realize about blockhain technology to all circles, especially among the parents who are very much who are not so interested in systems that use technology.

It is nowhere written that blockchain technology is limited to cryptocurrency projects.
Let me give you example of most used and famous financial institution - BANK.

Starting with total expenditure. In one study it is proven that if bank transfer their data from random softwares to blockchain and operate completely on it, expenditure will decrease by 80-90%. If so happen just imagine interest rate, they will shrink within 5% or less!!

Coming to lack in accuracy and paper work. Both will become history if banks completely switch to blockchain.

I believe blockchain already exist even before Bitcoin were created, it was been used by banks and other offices for record keeping but the first decentralized blockchain was used by Bitcoin.  Without blockchain technology, I do not think that institution will properly record the information they had gathered.  So yes I believe that we need blockchain technology in order for us to move forward and information and technology to evolve.

I think the answer is that we only need a coin if it provides something beneficial that other coins cannot. Some coins have faster transactions or serve a different purpose or have lower fees. So the blockchain technology is not necessary.

Blockchain technology is groundbreaking technology but not all coins need to be built on it. They can come up with a new innovation or purpose and still be just as useful as Bitcoin.

Blockchain technology is a must, because it's been a confirmed statement that it's an innovative technology that has given higher efficiency. Just based on the perfect functioning without flaws Blockchain technology was getting implemented into different sectors and bitcoin too is gaining more popularity because of the technology behind it.

I do not think that the technology of blocking is bad thanks to itself, because it has already become clear that all banking institutions and even state organizations are trying to introduce this technology into their system. Apparently there is such a merit with which they want to feel much simpler and more secure.

Even if that is the case I see those others as still significant because they introduce a new way to use something traditional or is something that is already there, just improved. Also even if they are shitcoins, most of them somewhat gives their users decentralization so I think we still need them. A lot of assets and shitcoin already made through generate the assets in the blockchain i meant the blockchain that already has the capability to issued the assets such as erc20 token and others.

Depend on what kind of coins we're talking about, bitcoin-blockchain is necessary, we need it even though you think there is no benefit in real life but bitcoin running on blockchain and we use bitcoin which mean; we use blockchain indirectly. If we're talking about shitcoins which offers something or services but not really useful, then those coins mostly used as trading object.

What do you mean by blockchain? If you are referring with the system itself, then yes Blockchain is the heart of every crypto currency. It makes the crypto thing very secure , fast and prone to hack.

                  Yeah! I do really agree with you, since there are also projects that are only good at the beginning and some worst case is that it is only popular for about weeks or months then suddenly the popularity would go down and in the end it would just be forgotten and be phased out. Keep in mind that most of the successful project up until now or up to date are projects that are beneficial or still being used right now, just like you have said someone or few people would really ask what's the purpose of the internet.

My personal perspective is that the value of blockchain technology introduced by Bitcoin is more of a conceptual one. The idea that we can decentralize the process of governance and consensus, and in that process value is created, which then can be distributed. It's quite interesting, because the cryptographic nature by design introduces a form of scarcity and security. Approaches like Iota's 'tangle', and some lesser known approaches such as the Holochain that don't store the full ledger at every node, are all essentially the same in achieving some form of decentralized governance, consensus, and value.
 
I think this is the real value, and the reason why the answer is a resounding *yes* to the question of whether we need blockchain technology.
Consensus, governance, and value, are all crucial parts to various kinds of systems, the degree to which still is unexplored.
 
You might have heard the phrase 'token economy' floating around, which encapsulates this.
 
The thing is, our world is really goddamn complex, and as certain systems and services grow in number and complexity, centralization becomes increasingly problematic. Take the government for example. The government is responsible for such a wide array of things, with so ridiculously many people depending on the adequate execution of their responsibilities, and the drawbacks of centralization become clear. The smaller the governing system and the larger/complex the system to be governed, the more difficult it is to achieve adequate control - it's just a mathematical constraint.
 
We depend on services and tools to deal with our increasingly complex environment, but what about the other way around? I know it sounds a bit fight-club esque, but our relation with our environment is more often than not out of balance. You may use facebook, but facebook uses you as well. Whether the relationship is fair, I'm not sure of, but that facebook doesn't care much, I am pretty sure of.

On a more positive note, I do believe we are in a transitionary phase of deconstruction.  A deconstruction of the services we need, and the tools available to fulfill these needs in a manner that gives the users more control, by decentralizing governance, and removing a need for trust from some central institution. We're just still learning the possibilities available with this new technology, which is going to become increasingly clear and exciting when we're going to get past this money-grabbing phase as reflected by unethical ICOs and shitcoins.

We are still in the early stages of crypto, many of those coins have value because they have a chance of becoming something in the future but if they fail then its value is going to be zero but if successful those coins could have market caps of billions of dollars.

i agree with you there are many unused coins  but it is open source and people can do what they want so that this is not reason that make use hate  this technology

I think the network that is still using the blockchain technology to develop itself and serve its users
effectively, I was on steem the other time and I was just confused at the way the whole place was, it doesn’t seem organized though looks legit.

Lots of companies are now using the blockchain technology in new and different ways, the technology was first started by bitcoin(or probably first used) now sites like steemit allow users to post articles and get paid when they are upvoted using blockchain technology.

I agree with you, recents projects on the blockchain stream doesn't worth their hype apart from some essentials ones that are showing great use case and importance. I think their should be an intermediary where new projects can be reviewed before sales this will help in regulating scam and unwanted projects on this stream.

Yes we need blockchain but it depends on what type of application most of the projects don’t need it necessarily or they just jump on the bandwagon in the fear of missing out. Having blockchain to be applied in sectors that need transparency must be push while projects with no use will fail.

Yes we need because there are certain things in the centralised system that only can be solved by decentralised system i.e. Corruption, theft of personal data and blockchain can change the banking industry like never happened before.
But still most of companies don't want to implement blockchain because of controversy of crypto but there are more than enough applications of blockchain rather than only crypto.

Agreeing with the statement I must say that we are in need of those useful technologies. We should promote it as much as possible because it is goanna be the base of business lights. Now some companies are issuing the salaries through blockchain which could appear as contribution in huge price graph of bitcoin so same as you I think we need this technologies.

I am agree with your opinion regarding the usefulness of blockchain technology. Currently Western Union payment network is busy with testing the blockchain for fast-forward payment solutions. Paying salaries is not look like real contribution to society if we gonna consider the trouble,problem factor during paycheck period.

There might be shit coins been paraded as ICOs, without even any real life usage. But that doesn't mean we should discredit the blockchain technology. It doesn't have to be Cryptos alone. It entails other services too.

There a lot of shit coins already in the market not really prioritizing the use or purpose of the coins but just to earn money from the project. This should not affect the blockchain technology, they are jusy using the fruit of Blockchain technology and it still has a lot of functions to be done in a country.

Block chain is quite different , it is not cryptocurrencies, thus no matter what we cannot associate it entirely with the cryptocurrencies just because they are the most popular aspects in the public eye.
