Title: How can you verify if a bitcoin is real?
Post by: StaffsLebowski on January 14, 2018, 11:13:09 AM
Hi All,

First post so please be gentle!. I'm trying to get familiar with crypto currency and understand 'how it works'. I've reached a block and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a particular point.

I understand the process of using public and private keys, back from the time when Phil Zimmermann created PGP. PGP allowed a user to encrypt a file, eg: an email/file (technically, just a bunch of ones and zeros) so that when the other user decrypted the file, they would see the words/file again. Or, to phrase it another way, the encryption was just a 'wrapper' for the content - ie, the words in my email or the file I sent.

Now, if someone sent me a bitcoin, how would I know what I was looking at? With an encrypted email, once decrypted I would be able to see something (text/file) and realise that I had actually received something. But, if someone sent me a bitcoin, what would I be looking at when I decrypted with my private key? A file filled with ones and zeros? Or maybe a simple text file with words inside saying, "Hey, this is 1 bitcoin!"

Can someone shed some light on what it I actually receive when I purchase a bitcoin and how I can verify that what I have 'in my hands', is actually a bitcoin and not just a bunch of ones and zeros? I understand that the blockchain is supposed to verify what is what but, what if I wanted to pass my bitcoin directly to you without the blockchain. Again, how would I know, what I received - was a bitcoin?

Thank you for your time and patience with my lack of understanding!

Regards,

Staffs Lebowski..

You can't send bitcoins without a blockchain. It is not that simple. Depending on how far you want to research this, it can get quite complicated.

The point is that you don't encrypt anything with public key cryptography in Bitcoin, it is used only for signing instead. (encrypting the hash is a signature)
When you send bitcoins you sign a transaction which says which public key (address) will be able to send these coins in the future.
This transaction is then validated by the entire network and miner's add it into a block. If miner's add an invalid transaction into a block, their block will be considered invalid by the rest of the network and other miners will ignore their block as it never happened.

Complex is OK. I prefer to spend 100 days trying to understand than blindly accepting the things I don't.

I'm sorry but struggling to understand this point you made: <<When you send bitcoins you sign a transaction which says which public key (address) will be able to send these coins in the future.>>

Could you ellborate?

Buy bitcoins from a reknown broker. Look up for some references around the broker. Depending on the country you might have differnent brokers.

Enter your Bitcoin address (the one you were paid into) into a public blockchain browser such as https://blockchain.info/. That will show you the relevant entries in the global shared Bitcoin ledger, which confirms that you, as the holder of the private key for that address, are the owner of those funds.

I see a lot of confusion there, but that is perfectly normal since you are new in this area apparently. First, and like some users pointed out, there is no bitcoin without blockchain. You must understand that we have the blockchain technology, that basically is just a record of blocks that are linked and secured by cryptography. The blockchain technology is what guarantees that whatever information you receive using that technology is real. This is what miners do, they make sure the blocks (records of transactions made between users) are valid/real before they are added to the blockchain.

Now bitcoin, is just a protocol, or a "set of rules", that runs on the blockchain. So you don't need to do anything to make sure that the bitcoin you have is real, because it's held on the blockchain, and is that technology that makes sure that the bitcoin transaction you just received is real (that tx is on a block that is added to the blockchain, and all that is verified by miners).

Bitcoins are not stored as balances, but rather as the sum of incoming and outcoming transactions.

A transaction is basically a signed message that says: "Alice sends Bob 1 BTC". What miners and nodes do is, they 1) verify whether the message has been signed by Alice and not and impostor and 2) they verify whether Alice actually has the funds (read: a sufficient amount of BTC in incoming transactions) to send Bob 1 BTC. If both is true, Bob himself now has a sufficient amount of BTC in incoming transactions to send 1 BTC.

Basically, you can verify whether a bitcoin is "real" by following this chain of transactions upstream until you reach the block where the coins have been mined. Mined coins are issued in a special kind of transaction that requires no inputs. The integrity of this special issuance transaction and the block that enabled it, is given due to the blocks that are mined on top of it, ie. the blockchain.

Here's a more detailed, technical information on transactions as transactions are actually little scripts and not just simple messages:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction

Wallet and blockchain explorers such as blockchain.info interpret this ledger of transactions (ie. the blockchain) for you so that you don't have to follow each transaction back to its source yourself.

You can't make a fake Bitcoin and even you can create fake transaction, network will definitely reject it, and you can't create new Bitcoin without having 51% of Bitcoin mining hashing power. So if you receive Bitcoins in your Bitcoin wallet it is surely an authentic one, or if you are still not satisfied, you can copy the transaction ID of your transaction and paste it on block explorer, if you can see that your Bitcoin is recorded there or the transaction status is confirmed then it is real. It is impossible for anyone to transfer Bitcoin without blockchain because all transactions are recorded in blockchain, unless you give the ownership (private key) of your Bitcoin wallet to other people, that's the only possible way to transfer Bitcoin without creating a transaction.

You're going to want to understand how Block chain works, before you get into the Crypto Currency part.
Once you have an understanding of the Blockchain, everything else comes easy :)

Wish you all the best in your Crypto Journey!
And please.. Don't be another moron who goes and sells his kidney and sells his kid on the black market so he can buy into this thing.
Crypto Currency is going nowhere for a long time. It will still be here after you have a vast understanding and a bunch of cash you don't mind potentially losing.

In addition to what others have said, you can query the blockchain network to ask how much BTC is associated with a public address. You can do this for any public address, since the ledger is public.

Check out blockchain.info for example. Click on a block number to see the list of transactions in the block. Then scroll down and click on one of the Bitcoin addresses to see the amount of bitcoin in that address.

Hi and thanks to all for chipping in with your input but..

I must say I'm still missing something - and I'm happy to say, maybe something has clicked yet for me..

I know the blockchain verifies that a trail of events (transactions) remains true, this is it's purpose. If you read the article on the bitcoin wiki (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Secure_Trading (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Secure_Trading)) it says that "Bitcoin users may want to trade bitcoin directly with each other in what is known as an over-the-counter market", this suggests that I can pass a bitcoin directly from my wallet to your wallet without the blockchain. Or when the say "directly" do they mean by-passing exchanges etc?

Try to join the bitcoin community and explore you. You can see people working hard to earn money. Or try to find out on how bitcoin helps people. Determine how much bitcoin value or price you are overwhelming in the price you see. Try to join the campaign and get along with others posting comments and more and you decide what bitcoin can do. You'll be able to see that by finding forum questions and answers.

This article you are referring to seems to be a little dated, as nowadays you're better off just buying Bitcoin on exchanges such as Bitstamp or Kraken. P2P trades are nowadays mostly done using Bitcoin.de or LocalBitcoins, which take care of escrow for you.

Note that trading Bitcoin is something different from sending a Bitcoin transaction. Sending a Bitcoin transaction is just that, a transaction as described in the posts above. Trading involves you exchanging bitcoins for goods or services or other currencies, such as USD or EUR. How the goods, services and other currencies are provided depends on the trade or trading platform (eg. it could be a wire transfer, it could be handing over cash). The bitcoins themselves however will still be send over the blockchain. You will know that you succesfully received your bitcoins when your wallet shows an incoming transaction with at least 1 confirmation. Recommendation being 6 confirmations, however 1 confirmation should suffice for normal everyday transactions.

In other words: Sending a Bitcoin transaction is like handing over cash. Trading bitcoin is like you handing over cash and receiving a piece of gum (or the other way round). The blockchain only takes care of handing over the cash. The tricky part is making sure that the gum is actually received. This has nothing to do with Bitcoin and that's were exchanges come into play.

Well I think this is true given the fact that you can earn here is one of the greatest evidence as well as the transaction made withbthe monetary unit of Bitcoin, this currency is indeed a great crypto which is technically cant be hold with our bare hands but when you convert it on your local money then youll realized Bitcoin is real.

Yes the safest and easiest method to make sure the bitcoin you got is real is to get it through verified exchanges. If you go to sites that states buy bitcoin now but you have not heard of the site before, just leave it. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

If you already have a bitcoin wallet then anything you received on it is really bitcoin, I haven't heard of a fake bitcoin though. The about sending bitcoin without blockchain, that would be impossible dude, because all btc transaction are sent to blockchain in order to get process.

Bitcoin is not real in physical form but you can own it like owning paypal balance. Once you have create a wallet , just deposit some bitcoin by converting your local money into btc and start holding like you're holding your GOLD.

Trust me, bitcoin can change your LIFE if you start invest Now.

Any transaction issued with Bitcoin cannot be reversed, they can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds. That means you should take care to do business with people and organizations you know and trust, or who have an established reputation.

Some effort is required to protect your privacy with Bitcoin. All Bitcoin transactions are stored publicly and permanently on the network, which means anyone can see the balance and transactions of any Bitcoin address. However, the identity of the user behind an address remains unknown until information is revealed during a purchase or in other circumstances.

Like in real life, your wallet must be secured. Bitcoin makes it possible to transfer value anywhere in a very easy way and it allows you to be in control of your money.

Such great features also come with great security concerns. At the same time, Bitcoin can provide very high levels of security if used correctly. Always remember that it is your responsibility to adopt good practices in order to protect your money. Read more about securing your wallet.

There is no such thing as a 'fake' Bitcoin. Either it is one or it isn't. If it isn't then it won't exist on the blockchain and no wallet will receive or display it. If you're worried about being fed false information by a rogue wallet provider, which I suppose is feasible but I've never heard of it, then run a full wallet and your own node.

If a bitcoin is real? came on, if you have bitcoins on your wallet, it is real, it is impossible to receive/Send fake bitcoins because it is impossible to hack the protocol. So do not worry about it, because if someone tells you that it can, he is lying to you, of course.

Sending p2p without the blockchain is kind of what will scare the government.  ;D
Every transaction that is made will have to enter that field for confirmations.
You cannot send one person your bitcoin without it. Bitcoin is in the blockchain.

You might have seen a lot of people here ranting about the fees. That is because of that. We send bitcoin and we pay. Because it needs to go to the blockchain.

Refers to his last post.

<<nowadays you're better off just buying Bitcoin on exchanges such as Bitstamp or Kraken>>

That's my concern. I'm a professional programmer/data specialist and I've been doing it successfully for around 25 years (never been out of work so must be doing something right!?). My first approach whenever I come across a new system/technology is to 'take it apart' to see if it 'holds water'.

A few days ago, Kraken scared the living daylights out of the crypto community when it went 'dark'. Crypto is in it's infancy, it's just like the klondyke era and lot's of companies are trying to get a foothold on the action and learning as they go along, mistakes and all. Sure, the banks I work for are exploring crypto but, there is no way on Gods earth they'd be working with a company like Kracken until it's well established, proven itself and is reliable. That'll take many years. If you don't think it's possible to go tits up, look at Lehamn Brother in 2008 the world-wide crash they caused.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated..

You can buy bitcoin from exchanges (there are much more exchanges, not only Kraken, and Kraken has already started the business again after the update, so it seems they will survive...) or you can buy it from the people at localbitcoins.
When you buy bitcoin, you have to have a bitcoin wallet to hold the bitcoins, if the bitcoins show up in the wallet, you can be sure that they're real and if you do the necessary safety precautions, they will be yours until the end of time or until you s(p)end them. (you should choose a wallet type that fits your needs, online, offline, paper, hardware, mobile, etc., check google for the differences and details).
You should not keep your bitcoins on exchanges (your opinion is right about exhanges, but they are  improving), so as soon as you exhanged your money to bitcoin, you should send it to your own wallet asap.
Banks won't bother with bitcoin now neither in the future, so they are only interested in the blockchain itself, as a kind of system to cut down the running costs of the international wire transactions... but you should know this better if you're working for banks.

You're welcome. Don't mistake Bitcoin the technology with the companies that utilize it, as that's a common error of thought when one first comes in touch with cryptocurrencies. If you want to avoid getting Lehman'd simply don't buy financial derivates based on Bitcoin. No need to invest in certificates if you can just buy the real thing.

Bitcoin had it's own little version of the Lehman brothers when MtGox turned out to run on fractional reserves in 2013 and consequently folded. Lesson learned: Keep your coins in your own wallet and spare yourself from counterparty risk. After all this independence from third parties is exactly the value proposition of Bitcoin.

Well, There are lots of Bitcoins that are not true. Maybe in their wallets, These bitcoins are true but, in transferring it to legitimate blockchain wallet, You cannot transfer it. Then it it not a legitimate bitcoin. There are lots of mining site that ables you to earn a lots of bitcoins in just a minute, If you think that it is not good, Its a scam. Well, Always use other wallets like Coinbase and Coins.ph in able for you to verify that you bitcoin is true and not fake.

Miners are the garantee that Bitcoins you receive or send are real.
Each transaction is linked to the previous one so you can't cheat the system.
AIt is completely different from sending encrypted files, you can't send Bitcoin directly to another user, the transaction should go through the Bitcoin network and should be validated by miners.

Can someone shed some light on what it I actually receive when I purchase a bitcoin and how I can verify that what I have 'in my hands', is actually a bitcoin and not just a bunch of ones and zeros?

When you receive bitcoin, you receive "nothing" on your computer. Instead, the bitcoin gets transferred in the "cloud".

Think of a cosmic post office with 2^160 PO boxes. To receive bitcoin, you pick a box at random, take the key out of the door, and tell your payer the box number. At your leisure, you can walk past your box, and look in the window to see if payment has arrived. When your payer sends payment, they'll hand it to the bitcoin postmaster, provide some postage, and specify that the payment be placed in your PO box. You don't have to be around to receive payment. You can also leave the payment sitting in the PO box "forever". Once you are ready to spend the coin, you'll use your key to open the box, take out the payment, head over to the postmaster, and pay it on to the next recipient(s). Actually, you never handle the payment directly. You give a scrambled version of the key to the postmaster, and they'll retrieve the payment. You know the coin is real because only the postmaster handles it, and everyone is carefully watching the postmaster.

BTW, the name "wallet" is a misnomer. A better name would be "keyring". It holds the keys to each of your chosen "PO boxes". Originally, wallets would have keys to all your randomly chosen boxes. More modern Hierarchical Deterministic wallets only need to be pointed at the first random box. From there they move to new boxes via a formula - e.g. five boxes over and three rows down.

Bitcoin can never be faked as long as you have a legit bitcoin wallet. Once you buy and received bitcoin or even a chunk of it in your bitcoin wallet, then that's it, it's pure bitcoin already and you will also notice that its market price will go up and down regularly.

Since it's a public ledger of transactions on the blockchain and its broadcasted across all the network and verified by the nodes i don't think you can easily send funds to any bitcoin wallet without the knowledge of the network. How can you avoid all these protocols and send funds? It is near impossible.

If you access your wallet and it show you that you have a bitcoin, given that it is confirmed by at least 3-5 nodes, then you definitely have a bitcoin. It can't get any real that that. The blockchain, which is spread accross the world, will have a record of that bitcoin in your wallet so you're good. As long as you have the private key and did not expose it to anyone.

Exactly, all transactions are recorded in a public ledger which can be verified on the blockchain with just a click on your computer or smartphone and so there's nothing shady about bitcoins and  no new bitcoin can be created or double spent outside the blockchain.

yep that has to be one the best features about crypto currencies in general that it cannot be replaced or increased the coin supply not like fiat you make alot of fake money that you even governments sometime cannot tell the fake form the real cash

you can do it buy trusting bitcoin blockchain network. or you can do it with yourself.
we have bitcoin full nodes, you can trust them and run SPV wallet or verify every block and run your own bitcoin full node wallet.
after sending bitcoin you can send some bitcoin fees to include your bitcoin in new block and that miners use that money to pay electricity costs.
So that you pay fee miners talk this fee to verify about network and correction all operation.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are actualy trying to ask. Do you mean if Bitcoin can be forged? If that is the question the answer is no and you can't get any fake Bitcoin. Everything is verified through network and miners so nothing similar can't happen.
But Bitcoin doesn't have it's physical version so you can't touch it or feel it it that was your thought.

I honestly think OP has a good question and for users new to the cryptocurrency world this is important to know especially that crypto coins do get forked once in a while and the easiest way to verify a coin is through a block explorer meant for a specific coin so if its bitcoin there specific explorers for it same goes to bitcoin cash and all other coins.

i think it's one of the stupidest questions i've ever read.

the only reason this forum and bitcoin still exists is because there is no such thing as a fake bitcoin, never will be and never can be.

you have a bitcoin wallet. it accepts bitcoins. you send bitcoins. it is 100% impossible for the bitcoin wallet or network to do anything else.

if there was a shred of doubt about this no one would touch it. the total erasure of doubt is the only thing it has going for it to win over skeptics.

It is for sure safer to go with an airdrop than ICO. For example is Marinecoin (MTC)distributing its total supply via airdrop. Check it out: https://marineco.in It is a self sustaining machine to machine system. Their Ardrop works with proof of promotion and works with artificial intelligence. The community is still quite small, but steady growing. In my opinion it could get quite big. The best thing is that you do not have to invest your money since it is completely air drop based. Its time tested as well. It had once a even bigger market cap than BTC.

Just make a legit wallet, and to do that you need to research about it for you to be sure if you dont trust anybody. By choosing a legit one you can sure that bitcoin you have is a true and original bitcoin. So far I didn't here fake bitcoin was created, but a fake site is frequently done by any hackers, and it's called phishing, it is a malicious act of keeping a false website or sending a false e-mail. Just avoid that and youll be great.

If I didn’t understand your question wrongly, you can verify that the bitcoin you received is indeed bitcoin by using a Bitcoin explorer. The transaction is public, by pasting your BTC address, you will be able to see whether you indeed receive bitcoin.

When you buy Bitcoin in any exchange then it is Bitcoin. When Bitcoin is on a digital wallet then it is Bitcoin unlike money that it can be duplicated and confused a lot of people whether it is fake or real, but as of today, we don't find fake BTC that are in circulation right?

I agree, for almost anyear of staying here, I didnt encounter about fake bitcoin. Only fake sites, people. Bitcoin is real, once you have it in your wallet it is now yours, yes it was not like a fiat that people can duplicate. You can also see it in your transaction history everytime you receive or release bitcoin from your wallet.

Here are some ways to remain safe:

1) Buy bitcoins from reputed exchanges only. This will ensure that you get correct number of bitcoins for the amount you are paying.

2) Do not make offline deals with shady persons.

3) There are websites like blockchaininfo.com where you can trace all the transactions and details about any bitcoin address. You can see past transactions in a wallet to check the credibility.

Title: Re: How can you verify if a bitcoin is real?

the point is that you don't encrypt anything with public key cryptography in Bitcoin, it is used only for signing instead...you send bitcoins you sign a transaction which says which public key will be able to send these coins in the future...transaction is then validated by the entire network and miner's add it into a block. If miner's add an invalid transaction into a block, their block will be considered invalid by the rest of the network and other miners will ignore their block as it never happened....

Bitcoin does not have any physical form so it's difficult to verify it by apperance. Basically, all you have to do is to use a proper wallet which is designed only for accepting Bitcoin. There are plenty of wallets available for all platforms. Android - Coinomi, Samourai. Windows - Bitcoin Core, Electrum and so on. If you will get incoming transaction then you will know that the bitcoins you are offered, were real. If someone sends you "fake" bitcoins then it won't even show up in your wallet because it stays up-to-date with only 1 network which is Bitcoin network.

If someone sent you bitcoin than just take the transaction id of that transaction and paste it on any online bitcoin block explorer websites and if you see your transaction coming up than that bitcoin is valid and for real and also check for the confirmation of that transaction before taking it as valid.

Some people like to feel their investment like cash. But it is not possible in case of things like stocks. However, now there are bitcoin ATMs being installed in some countries and you can easily en-cash your bitcoins suing those ATMs. Once you have used such an ATM, you will realize that bitcoins are real.

I will try to state it as simple as possible that people of ordinary intelligence can easily comprehend.

You cannot send a Bitcoin to anybody without the blockchain technology because Bitcoin's existence heavily depends on the blockchain technology. They are intertwined that you cannot separate one from the other- with the supreme exception that you would only want to have something to do with the blockchain technology. Like for example, governments, public and private companies are all after the blockchain technology only, leaving behind Bitcoin. So from here, you can say that the blockchain technology can be used even without Bitcoin. Although in the latter situation, I wonder how they will be able to carry this out.

network will definitely reject it, and you can't create new Bitcoin without having 51% of Bitcoin mining hashing power.

First of all brother , illegalisation of bitcoin is not that easy , though bitcoin is a decentralised currency, it doesn’t mean that there is no one who regulates the things for bitcoin, there are bunch of governing people who regulates such a huge crypto currency and yes’s when you receive bitcoin you will receive an notification, telling you that your account is credited with this amount of bitcoin and then there will be confirmation message by the block chain also , so in all these cases fraud is very rare.

I don't think that there is a chance for you to have a fake bitcoin because you can easily see if the transaction was real or if your balance is real if it appears on the blockchain explorer of bitcoin and that is the simplest way for me to see that bitcoin is real so if you want to see or verify it then go to the blockchain but overall, bitcoin cannot be copied or have a fake type of crypto.

To answer your question I would like to clarify this things. Every coin have its own unique set of wallets and addresses so this means that if you have bitcoins you should send it to a bitcoin address and not to other altcoin addresses. Also please do not complicate things if you receive bitcoins or any other cryptocurrency coin you will receive a number just like this " 0.36542 btc or 123.59463300 doge.

This is your first post, but seems like youre more educated in crypto than mine lol..bitcoin is bitcoin once it enters youre wallet its genuine coins and not zeros or ones.

I agree on it.

Why do you ask such a question? Bitcoin and others are digital currency. It does not have to be something tangible.
There will be no concrete money in the near future. Everything will be digital. People generally trust what they see and hold. Over time, digital money will get more and more into our lives. People will get used to this technology and be accepted.

There are no people who do not use credit cards in the world. You can not use the money on the credit card tangibly.

Bitcoin does not have fake, it is not like fiat money, if someone sends you bitcoin then it will show up in your wallet if the transaction is done right. You cannot just make bitcoin at will.

That's right! Cryptocurrencies cannot be touched because it's a digital money. People can hold it only in an online wallet or in hardware wallet. I don't know why the OP asks some question like that, bitcoin is a real as people can exchange it to real currencies without any problem with this exchange you can feel real cash in your hands. I am sure that bitcoin is real as a million of people around the world use it daily and make some purchases with it.

If you ask, then all will answer that Bitcoin can not be seen but we can hold it even though this is only digital, and it is certainly just a number, let's just say we watch digital watches that are only digital and numerical figures, so if you want to investigate then please go ahead and everyone has different speculation ...

It is difficult to give you a short synthetic answer if you are starting from zero. However, to make it simple, if you have installed a legit Bitcoin wallet, this will connect to the blockchain, which is a distributed ledger, shared by people who have Bitcoins, which exists exactly to check that every Bitcoin is real. For better explanations you can probably google Bitcoin.

Every transaction with bitcoins is stored in the blockchain ledger which will be there forever and it can never be manipulated by anyone ever. Which goes on to show that it is real.

Many people doubts bitcoin and they do not believe in bitcoin, also we cannot seize them because they are being careful in online world. Scams are unpredictable and we cannot prevent scam but we can prevent being scammed. So just search more infos for them to be okay.

You can verify it thru the online ledger, you can visit blockchain and search your wallet address there. If you can't found a transaction telling receiving or received there could be two things. One, the transaction could be delayed. In this scenario you could then search the sender address, there should be listed the amount of bitcoin he or she is sending to you. Additionally, your address should be listed in there. The second scenario,  if both address don't have send or received. It is probably not been send at all. Just an advise, if you are buying or trading some to a bitcoin, better use an escrow. By that you are sure that both party will do its part.

Title: Re: How can you verify if a bitcoin is real?

If you have received Bitcoin in your wallet and if the transaction is confirmed more than 6 times then you don't have to worry about the authenticity of the Bitcoin. It is a real Bitcoin and there is no way to send a fake Bitcoin in your Bitcoin wallet. On the other hand, if you are using web wallet then you might fall for a phishing mail having content like '1 Bitcoin received' etc so in any case, look for the original wallet and check that there is a confirmed transaction associated with that wallet with the same value.

Any transaction issued with Bitcoin cannot be reversed, they can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds. That means you should take care to do business with people and organizations you know and trust, or who have an established reputation.

I can verify it by handed the funds and can use for in exchange of my daily needs.

There is no such thing as fake bitcoin. It is not fiat currency which you can just create counterfeits at will, if you don't see your bitcoin in your wallet, then the person never sent it or it is still pending.

bitcoin is real, it is exist on blocks. It is a data that stored on a blockchain if im not wrong.
every year the block is added (mined) for a certain amount. Bitcoin exist because it is everywhere.

Some people like to feel their investment like cash. But it is not possible in case of things like stocks. However, now there are bitcoin ATMs being installed in some countries and you can easily en-cash your bitcoins suing those ATMs. Once you have used such an ATM, you will realize that bitcoins are real.

By the way, this is a very cool idea. ATM check is something that is worth your attention. However, one very small problem still exists: these ATM machines for the cryptocurrency are not available everywhere.

Well every thing  no assurance  but you can only verify if the bitcoin is real when there is no fee when everything is free from registration down to the opportunities.. people work hard to earn money so in this site, company can see it to make it legitimate  or making it real . but always take an extra caution in any site for our protections if this site wont work well we can look for another site that has verification currency that can be exchange .

For me,  the things we need to do in order to verify if bitcoin is real if you have friends that joins or using bitcoin. It is a big impact to believed knoqing your friend have or using it. Next is popularity,  if it is known and the most trending topic in social media then for sure it is real. Trusting is one of the important thing to have in investing in crypto currency world.

Come to point is that you don't encrypt anything with public key cryptography in Bitcoin, it is used only for signing instead. (encrypting the hash is a signature)
When you send bitcoins you sign a transaction which says which public key (address) will be able to send these coins in the future.
This transaction is then validated by the entire network and miner's add it into a block. If miner's add an invalid transaction into a block, their block will be considered invalid by the bitcoin.

"But, if someone sent me a bitcoin, what would I be looking at when I decrypted with my private key?" receiving bitcoin in your wallet is the authenticity of what your decrypt with your private key. Unlike Email where you see letters after decryption, with bitcoins, you see the balance in your wallet.

I think there is no such thing as fake Bitcoin. I've read some news that it takes a billion dollars to create a fake Bitcoin. So no need to worry about getting the fake one. The risk of the loss of your Bitcoin is when you gave the wrong address. Sending Bitcoin using blockchain is immutable. So all transactions that have submitted are not cancellable. So make sure that you are entering the right address and please do keep your private keys safely.

Title: Re: How can you verify if a bitcoin is real?

The point is that you do not encrypt anything with public key cryptography in bitcoin, just for signing only. When you send bitcoins, you sign a transaction that says which public key (address) can send these coins in the future, this transaction then validated by the entire network and the miner adds it into the block.

There are fake bitcoins, in the real world we call it "play money" well in ghe cryptoworld there are what we call "scams and fake crypto". For example, there are numerous fke mining apps and fake faucets, in fake mining apps people are deceived in their smartphones thinking that they actually earn but they are just really wasting their time, they tried to withdraw it then it ended up being a senseless piece of crap application that wasted your time, and I think in the crypto world this may be our "play money" but without us noticing it is fake.

This is a great opportunity for people who just entered the Cryptocurrency Market like me. The bottom line is that we do not encrypt anything with public key cryptography in Bitcoin, it's only used to sign it ... but we send bitcoins and sign transactions that say which public key will be able to send these coins in the future, but for later transactions validated by the whole network and miners add it into the block. If the miners add invalid transactions into blocks, their blocks will be considered invalid by other networks and other miners will ignore their blocks because nothing has ever happened.

Bitcoin is a type of digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds. We can withdraw the money from banks. Many people are having savings with bitcoin. So there's no need to worry about. Bitcoin is real.

Hi there StaffsLebowski! So you are telling that someone has sent you a public key and want to verify if it contains bitcoin? I that is the case then you can use blockchain to search the given address. You could see where the balance of that public key, it could also show the transaction to and from that address. But you need the private key to retrieved that bitcoin. You will use any wallet address and add there the public and private address. By then you can move the bitcoin on that address.

investing is not a safe way to verify if the crypto or any other types of investments are real. most scam imvestments are only paying at first but they will soon stop paying because they will turned into scam.

But in the case of bitcoin , bitcoin is already proven to be safe and legit because it has been already existed for many years . However there is only a risk that your invested capital can go down due to its volatility.

If you receive it in your wallet and it has confirmations (at least 3 to be safe) it's your and real.

Lol. That is literally a real way of confirming a bitcoin. haha xd.

I verify if bitcoin is real by searching in internet and ask some people about it. When I first try I ask it to my friend how to do it and if it is real.

blockchain is a technology above bitcoin, the term is a ledger that records all bitcoin transaction activity. if you have already made a verified wallet, if there is a bitcoin in or you send bitcoin, there must be a notification. but yes, bitcoin is digital, there is no physical form but you can see it. especially you can see in the market, and also your wallet.

Like in real life, your wallet must be secured. Bitcoin makes it possible to transfer value anywhere in a very easy way and it allows you to be in control of your money.

you may want to rephrase your question because it isn’t very clear what you’re asking.
why it’s not clear? because once an address belongs to a wallet, it will forever belong to that wallet, so “used to” is not a tense that applies
that aside, the only way an address can be verified as belonging to a wallet (which is really a private key) is by having access to the private key

If you meant to ask whether an address has been previously used or not, then you only need to check the transaction history even if it currently has zero balance.

I am not sure whether there is a way to trace when a bitcoin address was last opened via its private key, but if there is a way then that would help you verify the address.

You can verify that address in Blockchain Explorer like Blockchain.info.
After visiting Bitcoin Block Explorer - Blockchain website you can paste that wallet address and after that you are able to see How much balance have in that particular wallet.

Enter your Bitcoin address (the one you were paid into) into a public blockchain browser such as https://blockchain.info/. That will show you the relevant entries in the global shared Bitcoin ledger, which confirms that you, as the holder of the private key for that address, are the owner of those funds.

You go to their site so you can verify that bitcoin is real all about bitcoin you read there you will know that bitcoin is real I am sure that I am myself that bitcoin is real really because in 2 months only bitcoin is turned when I cash out more than 10k it fun.
