Title: Crypto can be less volatile than gold?
Post by: brawdias on May 09, 2018, 07:56:18 PM
Many people compare crypto to gold, and I see so many similarities as well.

I believe one day crypto can be less volatile than gold. If more people adopt, and address values to everyday items, trading in a daily basis, (like for grocery shopping) then crypto will  be easier to use, safer, fluctuate less in terms of prices, and a lot more stable.

What do you guys think?

Maybe one day in the far future. I can't imagine it will be possible that cryptocurrencies become less volatile then gold in near future.

If you see price of gold it take few months or years to change price a little, and cryptocurrency price can jump +- 30% in a day.

I don't think so.
Even if Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency is adopted by all the people, there will be whales that can manipulate prices.
The reason why gold price is more stable is not its adoption. Gold price is controlled by central banks.

Gold is a physical store of value. At the end of the day you are holding in your hands a gleaming piece of metal that has an arbitrary price affixed because of its value in certain industrial processes and as a benchmark of luxury.

Cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin has no real world existence outside the digital realm, no industrial utility, and is at best a hyped up version of user points or in-game currency.

There's a reason why Gold, traded over centuries, has a lesser volatility than Cryptocurrency, that's been in vogue for a few years at best: trust honed by long experience.

Well for me bitcoin/crypto is more volatile than gold.Even though that bitcoin has a great value it can never beat the stability of the value of gold.

There is definitely the possibility that this could happen. However, it's not guaranteed.

As you said, there are similarities between gold and bitcoin that can clearly be drawn quite easily. However, we see that gold is much more stable in value in real terms (inflation adjusted) compared to both fiat currency and bitcoin at the moment.

The main thing that makes crypto so volatile in my opinion is still the fact that it's relatively new, and markets are not as mature as the gold market. The number of adopters are still extremely small in bitcoin's case, compared to gold. I would not say that BTC can necessarily ever eclipse gold in terms of short and long term stability, but as adoption rates rise and more merchants start accepting BTC, there is no doubt that BTC will become less volatile over time. We're already seeing that now. The corrections and nowhere as large as a few years before.

Most people do not know about crypto, they do not know that crypto is superior because of technology compared to gold. That is the reason why people prefer gold  if we compare it, crypto has good technology, but gold does not have technology just in the form of bars or shaped money. Probably because the gold price stabilized thoroughly, then many people who want to invest. In contrast, crypto prices are sometimes unstable and difficult to predict, and this is a acceptable reason why people prefer to invest gold.

If bitcoin is well distributed among the public and the whales have lesser bitcoin at their disposal then bitcoin could be less volatile or could be stable in value. The reason why bitcoin have a sudden volatility is because of the whales who own a huge amount of bitcoins. Some owns 80k bitcoins while the other have more than 150k bitcoins at their disposal.

Although over time with adoption, Bitcoin would become much more stable, but when compared to gold there is a bit of difference in supply and demand mechanisms. While Bitcoin's supply schedule is pre-programmed/perfectly inelastic/vertical supply curve, although gold's supply is limited, but no one exactly knows how much of gold is there on earth (not including gold resources on other planets) and gold mining works more along the lines of maintaining a supply-demand equilibrium/price stability, no such mechanism in Bitcoin and that's what makes Bitcoin although a riskier, but better long-term investment than gold. The inelastic supply would always contribute to Bitcoin's volatility, but longer periods of stability will be achieved with further adoption.

the krypto market is hard to guess. because the price every day can change the fox sometimes up sometimes down is very difficult for us to find the right time for sales.
very different from the price of gold in the market. gold always rises in the market and this is in line with the dollar price in the market and very rarely did the gold decline.

The reason why the Bitcoin price is so volatile is because the bitcoins are not evenly distributed to a lot of people. You still get a few "Whales" with loads of coins that can manipulate the price. When coins are distributed more evenly, these "Whales" will have less coins to dump on markets or less fiat to buy big amounts of coins.

So you will have a much less volatile price movement in theory on the exchanges, because more people are influencing the price and not only a small group of individuals with a lot of coins/fiat.

Bitcoin transactions do not involve banking and government. But the price is determined by the market itself. In addition, Bitcoin digital currency is issued in limited quantities. Unlike Dollar and other currencies.
While in gold investment is the most favorite instrument. Because of the chart of price movements, world gold prices always tend to rise.
In addition to price, gold is also safe for long-term investment, there is legality and the analysis of the price movement is quite simple.
I think more stable gold. But I hope bitcoin can be like gold.

I believe in the future when many people already boringly well-understood bitcoin as financial assets, the price will stabilize. Currently, the revolutionary technologies haven't been yet widely spread and acknowledged by the mainstream. That is one of the reasons the price is volatile.

it would be great if someday bitcoin would be less volatile than gold. Even so, one thing we need to consider if paying attention to the price of gold from year to year has been approximately 7 years since gold recorded the highest price of $ 1.9k in 2011. If bitcoin also follows a trend like this, that means it could be bitcoin will stable after listing ATH where the stable number is below ATH.

imagine a pension fund or other funds joining crypto for a mid term (5-10y) investment. they hold. and they hold a lot.

It is very unlikely that is going to happen anytime soon, people have been using gold for thousands of years while bitcoin is a very recent invention, we also know that we can make the economy work with gold because that is the way it used to work and many civilizations of the past used gold and silver as their main currencies while we do not have an idea if we can make the economy work with bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, so as you can see there are many unknowns about bitcoin and those unknown factors make the volatility even greater.

Bitcoin will eventually end up like gold. Gold has a very long history behind it and bitcoin is at its early stage yet so it takes time for that to happen. If all 21 million bitcoin will be mined and circulated then absolutely the means that it is accepted worldwide and people will start using it and no entity will manipulate it anymore. That can lessen the volatility of bitcoin's price.

There is in fact a big chance that happens, bitcoin has a very limited supply and when something has a very limited supply it has a tendency to go up in value and when we take into account that the value of bitcoin is so high despite the fact that very few people around the world have adopted, it is very likely that we are going to see a huge price when people finally realize the scam that is the fiat economy, at that point I think we're going to see adoption growing incredibly fast and at that point the volatility could go down somewhat.

Well to me bitcoin is not gold but bitcoin is something really better than gold as we can see nothing is that much high in price as much as bitcoin is and nothing gives profit higher than bitcoin. Bitcoin use to increase and decrease in price it is because it has volatile nature whenever people show interest for bitcoin to invest it use to increase in price, the same way it decreases but the differed I have noticed between gold and bitcoin is, bitcoin increases very high but most of time gold use to remain at the same position.

The value of gold always rises every year and minimal inflation risk:
Gold trading has a simpler and easier analysis.
Gold prices are quite strong against the crisis and are resistant to inflation.
it's hard for crypto to match the gold stability.

Bitcoin price instability is also driven largely by the various perceptions of intrinsic value of cryptocurrency as a store of value and value transfer methods. Because of these two factors, the current Bitcoin spot price varies against the dollar and other fiat currencies.

according to this site and it looks like more than 80% of bitcoin has owned by less than 0.68% from the total address existing in the bitcoin blockchain.
But if the bitcoin even had fair distribution and it will be so volatile consider the whale can manipulate the market. Those people with infinite money can do anything to the market,.

With the way that crypto is positioned, there is no way that cryptos will be more stable than gold. Gold is one of the most stable assets in the world and even when it falls, it does so by a small margin. Which is why for people who do not have the heart for volatile investments should stick with gold.

It is true that most people prefer to invest in gold than to invest in cryptocurrencies, but I really think that is just because gold has been around for so long, but that is going to change especially when people begin to realize that the profits that they can get with cryptocurrencies are way higher than anything that they could get with gold, in my opinion you should only put your money in gold if you are already satisfied with the size of your wealth, but if that is not the case then it is way better to invest in cryptocurrencies since the potential to grow your investment in a fast way is incredible.

Just speaking the fact here, crypto is being used as a speculative tool heavily where gold, so many people consider as an investment or a form of wealth saving, this alone answers your question that cryptocurrency will never ever become as stable as gold and the market capitalization is kinda too low for bitcoin or any crypto summed up to prevent any form of manipulation, even if bill gates want he would easily manipulate the price of bitcoin.

What you say I think is true. People may prefer gold because it has a stable price and always increases over time. Gold becomes a good investment medium and crypto becomes an investment medium that can provide high profits. Today, many people are getting rich by crypto, and I have seen the evidence. However, all forms of investment have risks, I think investing in crypto is higher than gold investment.

I don't think so.
Even if Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency is adopted by all the people, there will be whales that can manipulate prices.
The reason why gold price is more stable is not its adoption. Gold price is controlled by central banks.
Right, but let's not forget that in a market with a lot of potentials, the institutions will always have to get a huge position in such market and I would not be surprised if this market turns out to be like that. However, it would not change its decentralized nature anyway, but the thing here is that with a huge market capitalization and great level of adoption, it is entirely possible to have less fluctuation, but when is what we do not know.

With a huge market cap, I believe less volatile than gold is going to be possible. This is still a very small market compared to the larger market and we still do have a long way to go, which I believe anyone who understands the future potential will definitely know better. There would be less fluctuation in the long run, but we are still far from it I believe and with real life usage and main stream adoption, I believe we can get there fast.

I think it's possible, but in the future, in 15 years. So far, cryptocurrencies are only developing, and it would be good if they now just grew in price, reaching its peak.

I do not think that. Gold has the same characteristics as decentralized supply, but some recent adjustments show that government and banking will have some impact on the management of gold prices and volatility. Right now, cryptocurrency is yet to be managed and controlled. Volatility will help the market to survive. This is the most important feature of crypto.

Why 15 years? Does it depend on the speed of Bitcoin mining? We all know that sooner or later all coins will be mined, I have read some articles about when it will finally happen (and all of them give different predictions actually), but then the price will not be so volatile, to my mind. Or I am mistaken? So small bitcoin price volatility will immediately make other coins/tokens less volatile as well.

Crypto needs to be volatile in order to us to have good trading strategy or profit unlike in gold it is more into investment that can be a source of income whenever crypto is not on good state. Having both can ensure a better life.

Stable is not good if we are trader. Stable only good if the price of crypto will be used for buying any stuff.
What do you think? So this is very difficult choice for me. First i want to use crypto in daily adoption to use to buy something but if its happen then trader will be not effective anymore.

You can compare only crypto to gold through it's value but not it's nature. Gold is more stable than crypto because crypto are so volatile, it  rapidly change it's price. And volatility of crypto are the reason why you earn more profit from it.

Crypto currency can not by its nature be less volatile than gold. It will always have high volatility. Therefore, the expectation of the other will remain only expectations. If we look at gold prices and crypto currency, it becomes obvious that gold is much more stable and will remain so. At the same time, prices for crypto currency have always been and will be as volatile as possible. Apparently, it will always be so.

The currency of any country is tied to the gold-currency reserve of this country itself. But the state of the world is not in a hurry to fully legalize the cryptocurrency. In my opinion, it is very dangerous to replace gold with the crypto. Well, we should not forget that the state is primarily centralized, which is completely proportional to the cryptocurrency.

Yes, it can. If people start treating Bitcoin as investment. Another thing is that if the number of holders increased significantly. that for one to have 1BTC it would be a great feat then someone showing up on exchanges with huge BTC to dump would reduced significantly and help the price to become stabilised

Price of gold is stable its price goes up slowly but not often while in Bitcoin it's fast in just a time it's price is high then all of a sudden it goes down and that's unpredictable so when you invest in bitcoin be wise to avoid lose of money.

price stability in the crypto is a difficult thing to achieve. fluctuations in the crypto always happen and that's what makes people get stuck. Indeed the risks are great, but the results can be obtained from crypto is much greater than gold. the full crypto risk but great results, arguably secure gold but the achievement each year is not necessarily high escalated. just choose the course that you think can make you get big results.

I think you are confused with the statement as the actual fact is Crypto is more volatile than gold as crypto is supported by a decentralized system and accounts lot of fluctuation. Hence, crypto will always be more volatile than gold at any situation. Gold is traded globally which decrease its volatility, the only time we see price fluctuation in gold when there is news or rumors regarding war rest at all time gold seems to be stable wheres in crypto prices are fluctuating everyday.

Maybe one day in the far future. I can't imagine it will be possible that cryptocurrencies become less volatile then gold in near future.

If you see price of gold it take few months or years to change price a little, and cryptocurrency price can jump +- 30% in a day.
Absolutely maybe one day and it is a day I believe will come anyway. I remember gold was once volatile like this in a huge way and in the early days of the market there would always be time when we will get to see moments such as this, but as time goes on, I believe things would change in a very good way as the market keep maturing which is the future we all are eagerly waiting for anyway.

Well for me bitcoin/crypto is more volatile than gold.Even though that bitcoin has a great value it can never beat the stability of the value of gold.
For now, yeah! In the future, we do not know and we can only wait to see how it turns out. Let's not forget though that the market presently as it has grown is no longer what it used to be back then when the market can simply start rising hugely and then you get to see it dump pretty fast.

Once there is huge demand and real life usage generally, which obviously would have caused a huge spike in value; at that point, we may start seeing less volatility but not like it would be completely out.

May be or may be not. The thing is if you give it name of gold then it looses the basic working principle that is being a currency. Yes, bitcoin is currency in reality. That was the prime reason it was created just to make the transaction secure and lightening fast but eventually we the humans out of our greed made it look like store value.

I don’t think it will be used like gold. If I’m the future it really does get source of trading etc then it will be more or less currency.

I don't think so.
Even if Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency is adopted by all the people, there will be whales that can manipulate prices.
The reason why gold price is more stable is not its adoption. Gold price is controlled by central banks.

Yes, I agree that the price of bitcoin can easily manipulated. Sometimes it increases and sometimes it decreases depending on the time because it varies over a period of time. On the other hand, the price of gold is dynamic because it has an constant value and cannot be manipulated by others.

The main thing that makes crypto so easy to change in my opinion is still the fact that it's relatively new, and the market is not as famous as the gold market. Probably because the gold price is stable thoroughly, so many people want to invest. In contrast, crypto prices are sometimes unstable and unpredictable, and this is an acceptable reason why people would rather invest in gold.

The cryptocurrency is not yet fully regulated, and any whale can control it, but gold is stored in central banks around the world as a strategic reserve, and no whale can hold a lot of gold.
And you can't carry gold to other countries at will, because it may be suspected of smuggling gold, but cryptocurrency, you can freely send it to any corner of the world.
Therefore, the price of gold is so stable because it is strictly regulated by all countries in the world, but crypto not.

Gold is a precious stone, a thing. It can be kept in hands, stored, handed down from generation to generation. And crypto is nothing, it's just numbers, now it's there, and tomorrow it's not known what will happen. Therefore, crypto and gold can not be compared, they are completely different assets.    Coming from the fact that the crypto market is experiencing a certain gold rush, you should allocate more than half of your funds to this market. It is purely from the logic that in our time priorities are more tuned to new technologies, despite political and social beliefs. This choice puts on the fact with the coming quantum technologies, the current market must experience many changes. To be more exact, many coins will leave the market, as there will simply be no demand for them, due to the same technological superiority.

I managed to participate in several ICO, some I earned quite well, I can say with certainty, for a good project, it must have potential for the future, that it will be needed in five years. Unfortunately most projects do not have this potential. I was lucky and I came across a project focused on protecting against hacking quantum processors, and to maximize the use of all the advantages of new technologies, project Kelvin Blockchain (https://medium.com/@kelvinchain/the-post-quantum-era-of-blockchain-todays-solutions-for-the-world-of-tomorrow-16bdd970f49a), you need at least to consider, because not every day there is such a good option for investing money.

Although crypto rated unsafe but thus gives very great results and many investors have already proved it. If you are looking for a quick profit then crypto place and not gold.

I doubt that crypto can be less volatile than gold. Crypto is a market that is controlled by demand and supply and can be manipulated by introducing fake demands and supplies. That's the problem. As long as those whales are still out there manipulating everything , crypto cannot be less volatile than Gold.

I think that this is possible, but it will take at least another 10 years. The crypto-currency market is extremely volatile now and this situation will not change quickly.

Quite possibly but that will only be if we as investors change the way that we treat the cryptocurrencies, there are way too many people who are shorting coins on a daily basis that saying reduced volatility can be more like a dream than a reality. Nonetheless, this is a new market, there is still a lot of growing to be done, the volatility will one day no longer be an issue.

I certainly agree that this market is the future, but now and in the near future, it certainly will not be able to push gold, since gold is the number one for thousands of years

In my own opinion, gold is just an option for people to invest but if they want to earn more profit or income monthly then cryptocurrency will be always much better.

I don't feel that. Gold has an indistinguishable qualities from decentralized supply, however some ongoing changes demonstrate that administration and saving money will have some effect on the administration of gold costs and unpredictability. At the present time, digital money is yet to be overseen and controlled. Instability will assist the market with surviving. This is the most essential element of crypto.

The vast majority like to put resources into gold over crypto, in light of the fact that gold cost is more steady. Putting resources into crypto is exceptionally unsafe, on the grounds that the cost is extremely unpredictable. On the off chance that everybody utilizes crypto in regular daily existence, I trust the cost of crypto can be steady. In the event that everybody knows the upsides of crypto, I figure numerous individuals will put resources into crypto. In the event that we put resources into crypto for quite a while, at that point the benefits are enormous than putting resources into gold. Also the innovation claimed by crypto, for the individuals who know for beyond any doubt they will be keen on putting resources into crypto.

In terms of security, Cryptography is safer than Gold in transactions. if in terms of price stability, gold is more stable than crypto. Why ?, because there are so many Crypto markets, so many people disagree about the coins. there is also crypto when it drops drastically as it is today, most likely due to massive coin sales. Of all that, very minimal Gold can be like that.

Even if Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency is adopted by all the people, there will be whales that can manipulate prices.
The reason why gold price is more stable is not its adoption. Gold price is controlled by central banks.

Indeed the Whale is the King of Evil in this world.
I do not like the Whale because it hurts a lot of people.

But I think Cryptocurrency is very fast to spin, we can see overnight cryptocurrency can go up and down about 50% ++.

It will more than USD's proof  (https://hodlnation.com/ru/crypto-news/1003/vk-page)

Of course on these levels volatility will be much lower than now

So.. I think it's possible

Probably we will see it in 10 years

Price of the bitcoin and other cryptos changes very often that we can not really imagine or expect to change on a particular day.
Gold is very very old and much more stable than any other cryptocurrency and to become the bitcoin as stable as gold should pass many years or many many decades.
The bitcoin may seems stable now for the past months but still it is not as stable as gold because anytime we can see any crash or any pump of the price.

No, cryptocurrency can't be less volatile than gold. How could a decentralized digital coins be less volatile? There is no way because these coins are not controlled by a single entity or group. The decentralized nature of cryprocurrency is actually the one responsible for making these coins highly volatile. The prices may change drastically in either way. Unlike golds are controlled by centralized systems.

I think that it can become true after 30-50 years when everyone will use cryptocurrency or hold it like gold savings. But in near future, it will not happen, but we can still get rich by using this volatility in trading.

Goverments control gold price and they wouldn't let to speculation. BTC is not controlled by a group and it can't be more stable than gold. Compared to gold, there are also so many differences in supply and demand.

That's correct people will rather prefer cryptocurrency than gold. I have mentioned on many occasions that popularity makes a product or stuff more and more popular. Gold will be very stable as it goes up and down in a very rare instance. Crypto will give you a good return with good profit.

Volatility is the major part of every field investment either it is commodity market or crypto market because up and down is necessary for earning. But it is not clear that crypto is less volatile than gold because gold up and down are very low and it is running from so many years. Is show that gold is less volatile.

Agree. Crypto market has so short history that we can't tell about volatility as solid fact. But I think crypto never will be as gold. They have absolutely different essence and purpose. At least gold is physical thing (we don't say about gold futures). On the market without physical delivery it's the same today already

Not a chance. Crypto is something that is volatile because it is unregulated and decentralized, we can buy and sell and do basically whatever we want with it without explaining it to anyone and can manipulate to hurt others if we want to and still get away with it without any consequences unlike regular traditional investment methods like gold.

For example there are laws against buying gold from one country and flying it to another country whereas there is absolutely no law that states you can buy bitcoin from one country and cashing it somewhere else.

Bitcoin and all other coins are highly volatile and gold is not because the governments have laws for gold and stocks whereas no government ever can truly put any laws for bitcoin, even if they do there is no way they can force it and you can do whatever you want anyway since they can't really follow what you are doing with it.

Unlike cryptocurrency with in a week it can reach to 30-50% value fluctuation. Maybe in the future if it happens when crypto become the main form of payment in all goods and services.

I think that seems impossible for me. Yes many people comparing crypto to gold because cryptos have limited supply and need to be mined but too many people invested in cryptocurrencies because market is very volatile and it seems like attractive for investors. So i think volatility is the most important thing in crypto market. If it will end in the future crypto will be less popular. But surely it can be for coins which have big marketcap.

I think gold is more stable than crypto. The price of gold in the five year period is quite stable and hang around a particular price range. Unlike crypto like Bktcoins or Ether which within the same five year period has seen a volatile price swing from high to low or vice versa .

Without the participation of the regulator to reduce volatility will be very difficult, at any time a big player can affect the market.

yes I agree with you, Fiat and Gold prices can be stable and have low volatility because there are regulators who protect them so to reduce the volatility in cryptocurrency it seems very impossible considering more liquid and decentralized

You can't say this for cryptocurrency, maybe one of those cryptos (ripple, ethereum, bitcoin etc.) can be used for grocery shopping in the near future but not all cryptos can do that.

Crypto world is just new market, but gold has existed for a long time so it has lost it's volatility. After 5-10 years we can see more stable market for crypto when something can be controlled and big whales can not speculate, then we can see less volatility.

Some coins may be stable, but most of prices are formed by demand and supply, so it is not like for crypto to become much more stable than gold.

I don't think that crypto will ever be stable. And it is not supposed to be stable. If you want a stable asset, then you should invest in bullion coins or treasury bonds. Crypto will not serve that purpose.

Yes, high volatility - is main feature of the cryptocurrency. And there are many opportunities to earn money because of that. On the other hand, this volatility is too high, so many people just afraid to invest

Using common sense, this is not a short-term, easy thing to achieve!
Because, Gold price is mostly controlled by Central Banks, not just the adoption thing.

Plus, we can make Crypto price stable if we just Back it up with precious metals price, like gold.
If you analyse the fiat currency price, you'll notice its measurable by Gold too. So, in order to resolve the Volatility issue, we have to use Tokenized precious metals.

Gigzi current ICO project will make this possible and more effective, using a unique decentralized business model: https://gigzi.com

It could be but not with the way that the coins are being handled right now and certainly now without regulations in the market. Gold is that way because there are a lot of regulations guarding the asset and the trading that revolves around it so if we want cryptos to be less volatile than gold then we would need regulations to stop all the people from manipulating the prices.

yes cryptocurrency demand is not as much as gold and cryptocurrency is a bit that uses it different from gold, which is a lot of platforms that can accept and use it so making the price of gold can be very expensive and gold also has a very high influence because it can be used for payments on multiple platforms.

The cryptocurrency can be split indefinitely, which is why the price of cryptocurrency will skyrocket!

I think its possible if the current system and valuation of the crypto-currency was overhaul and follow the ideas of the so called stable coins. This way less crypto volatility can be achieve. Unlike this current and existing system that full of loop holes the high volatility issue still remain as it is!

I think cryptocurrency is highly volatile due to speculation in part. There are such people that they are always looking forwards to taking benefit from the market, as to do so, they speculate the market, thus increasing or decreasing values of coins. I think that people have started becoming aware of it, and regulations are in place, and as a result, it will make cryptocurrency less volatile in the coming days.
