Title: Most Secure bitcoin wallet ?
Post by: MadGamer on September 06, 2014, 07:22:54 AM
hi,Im new on this and I was wondering what is the most secure bitcoin wallet ? is it fine if I continue with blockchain.info ? nothing to fear from ? I won't lose my BTC or anything else ? thanks

Wallets are only as safe as you are. Blockchain.info is very safe providing you set up all the security features. Make sure you have 2-factor authentication set up at a minimum.

If you know how to secure your pc it's better to use an offline wallet like Electrum or Armory.

It all depends on what you want it for, exchange, store?

Paperwallet to store is the safest.

Use blockchain with 2fa for online wallets, for offline wallets you can either go with Electrum or Armory.

For offline wallets like bitcoin-qt you need to download the whole blockchain but with online you don't.

blockchain.info is safe but as stated above it really is only as safe as you are. As long as you do everything you can to ensure you are safe when using this you should be fine and have no problems.

Armory is the most secure in my opinion and it has the nice multisig feature.

Wallets that actually keep your private key (as opposed to online wallets that keep the private key for you) are the safest bet! I think MultiBit, Electrum, or Bitcoin Armory are the safest ones out there. Their source is public and you may compile them yourself - that way you can be sure to actually know what the wallets are doing!

As far as I know qtwallet is online unless you want to put your computer/HD in cold storage offline for ever, only to switch on /put online to transfer all the coins on it.

All online wallets can be hacked, 2fa is no guarantee

No wallet is really "Offline" imo. I mean how are you supossed to have an up to date wallet without internet? And how are you supossed  to send/recive without internet? Without internet any wallet is useless. And I would say QT is the most secure due official status.

These "what's the safest" threads are starting to drive me CRAZY ??? (no offense meant to the OP though).

There are a lot of different ways to interpret the word "safe". Go to the bitcoin.org choose-your-wallet site here (https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet), it does a good job of comparing the safety/security of different wallets. If you have a specific question regarding regarding that site, such as "what does Vulnerable Environment mean?", or a question regarding something that website doesn't mention, such as "what is the easiest to back up / protect from hard drive failure", we'd be happy to try to answer it.

Although I mean no disrespect to the other posters in this thread, they all have their own interpretation (as do I) of the word "safe" and have answered accordingly... e.g. to some, safe means "safe from hard drive failure", and to others it means "safe from malware", and to others it means "safe from hackers" or even "safe from data collection/spying". None of them are right for every purpose (or wrong).

the safest wallet there is, a leather-one that sits in your pocket with fiat.  This is what I am starting to believe.

Bitcoin is still in its infancy. Most people have the common sense not to store $1000 in their wallet and then walk around on "the wrong side of the tracks." Bitcoin is still new enough that this sort of common sense is still... uncommon. Educating yourself is the best way to avoid such pitfalls, so kudos to OP for asking questions.

Combine all this with the fact that there are no subforums here for "I just got robbed of my leather wallet" nor for "I've never had Bitcoin stolen from me", and it's easy to see why there are a disproportionate number of "I got robbed of my bitcoin" stories here.

I think it is tricky to be secure, and you do need to educate yourself (it's not something like fiat cash that everyone has known about since they were 3), but it's also not as dangerous as this forum may make it seem once you've acquired some Bitcoin common sense.

the weird thing is after spending about six months in this community, I educate my computer clients that you should store your personal photos/data/accounts in online storage like Google Cloud/DropBox etc as its safer then your harddrive, then get involved here and read the horror stories of hacking/online wallets and cloud storage without 2FA.

Sometimes you start to think that hiding your money under the matress is safer especially as the bitcoin is devalued at present

Is it safer? [link to Wikipedia] ;) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_2014_celebrity_photo_leaks)

then get involved here and read the horror stories of hacking/online wallets and cloud storage without 2FA.

Sometimes you start to think that hiding your money under the matress is safer especially as the bitcoin is devalued at present

I think you've got a great analogy. Google/Dropbox/Onedrive are great for casual things you'd rather not lose, but aren't super important (your kids birthday pictures, a few hundred bucks of bitcoin, etc.). Under your mattress is great for things you'd rather not get leaked to the Internet (see the link above...). A safety deposit box is great for really important stuff (your will, paper backups of your wallets containing lots of bitcoin, etc.).

It's all about learning how and where to store bitcoin, depending on how much value it has to you, and how much you can afford to lose (same as fiat: keep a hundred in your wallet, a little more under the mattress, and more in the bank).

There isn't an unsecure offline wallet but if your computer is full of cracked software than it's better to store your coins into an online wallet like blockchain.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but... Blockchain doesn't help against malware.

Only online wallets which offer per-transaction two factor authentication have any meaningful protection against locally installed malware (and even then it's not perfect).

Blockchain is pretty much a desktop wallet which happens to store both the software and your encrypted wallet on their servers. With this model, they couldn't offer per-transaction 2fa even if they wanted to. (I don't mean to bash them, that's just the way things are).

As far as I know, the only online services that can offer per-transaction 2fa, and therefore improved malware resistance, are multisig online wallets, and online wallets who completely control your keys (e.g. Coinbase).

Of these, I happen to know that GreenAddress.it does offer per-transaction 2fa, and I think that BitGo.com does too (both are multisig online wallets, and therefore share control of your wallet keys with you). I'll bet some of the online wallets that completely control your keys also offer per-transaction 2fa, however I don't know which do and do not. One of these is probably your best bet if you think you're not running in a secure environment.

Not really.
You can create a wallet watch-only wallet in your online computer, and create an unsigned tx.
You can then sign the tx in your offline computer, and go back to your online computer to push it.

I probably wouldn't put more than 10-20 coins on blockchain.info and then use all their safety features, like 2FA. I havent used electrum, but have heard its really nice. Armory is the way to go, you have to have a ton of Ram but most computers these days already have a ton, but i think you need at least 6gb or more.

a lot of people are getting a cheap computer thats their dedicated bitcoin wallet. back up the wallet via a thumbdrive and never have it touch the internet. with Armory, i believe you can do most everything off line until you broadcast it... I have just kept out a few coins on my computer for spending, the rest is in cold storage via paper wallet. if I need to buy something with bitcoin, i will go to coinbase and buy it if i can or buy what i need. Actually, coinbase has really upped their game with safety. you can make paper wallets and they now whats called a vault, havent really looked at it, but it seems secure.. i dont know if they have implemented multi sig as that will be the future.

Bottom line, if you dont have a lot of coin, use coinbase or blockchain.info with their safety features, more than that get armory or a trezor.. cool device.. look it up..

[...] Armory is the way to go, you have to have a ton of Ram but most computers these days already have a ton, but i think you need at least 6gb or more. [...]

Not any more. They fixed the RAM issue by Armory building it's own database of the blockchain data, which means you need double the amount of disk space. I.e. the blockchain data is now about 20 GB, so Armory will need 40 GB of disk space.

Anything wrong with using electrum inside a Virtual machine with as password protected wallet for spends?

I'm aware that malware can get through the host OS and into the virtualized environment but surely it would have to be a lot more specialised to do this, especially if you only run your VM to access electrum and shut it down staight after. That way, you're only exposing your wallet  few minutes a week or less.

Armory is the best wallet if you consider its security, but has also some disvantages like the obligation to download the blockchain.

[...] That way, you're only exposing your wallet  few minutes a week or less.

Doesn't matter how long or often you're exposed if you have some malware sitting there just waiting for it to happen.

It really all depends on your paranoia level. The more secure, the less convenient or "easy".

I would not think I could convey a label close to a bitcoin payout address. But you can see your transaction history

and a minimum of mtgox continues to be through the whole security mess and learned from that.

Get a fresh computer (or a VM), stay completely offline with it from start, install an OS, install a paper wallet generator (from USB), generate 1000 paper wallets (address + key pairs), save the pairs somewhere safe - print or usb (more copies the best), save the addresses only somewhere you can access daily and there you are: very safe.

blockchain.info is the best web wallet IMO, but it is far from the "most secure wallet".
If you have a significant amount of bitcoin, you should keep 90% of it in your offline wallet, and just keep 10% in your blockchain.info wallet with 2FA for daily usage.

Definitely paper wallet or USB stick locked in a safe is the most secure.

Brain wallets are risky, especially if you develop Alzheimers, get a concussion, or get Amnesia somehow.

At least with paper and USB, your loved ones have access to it, in case you somehow pass.

The most secure Bitcoin wallet is a properly produced and used paper wallet.

The best combination of security and convenience is the Trezor hardware wallet, very long thread here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122438.0

Ready to buy one?  Here:

https://www.buytrezor.com/

Trezor:

Backup the seed words once and never have to back up again
Private keys never leave the device
All crypto operations happen on the device
   Open source hardware and firmware
Will be supported on many popular wallets soon

I'm using justcoin wallet, pretty secure.
No, you have your coins lent out to a total stranger.  Not even a wallet, it is an account.  NO.
Armory Wallet, but maybe a brain wallet is the easier solution for normal users.
Brain wallets are horrible.  Only for very advanced users and then I still think they are a very bad idea.  NO.

But don't forget to encrypt the keys on the USB flash drive as well! As soon as someone gets hold of that thing, they're able to spend all your precious coins, otherwise! This is something I wouldn't want to risk in any case!

I think either paper or cold storage.

Both have their upsides and down.  Assuming it is used right either could possibly be considered safest.   I think it comes down to if it's used as intended.

True, so it is a trade-off between safety and convenience.
You can put most of your coin in an offline wallet for safety, and put a small amount of coin in an hot wallet to spend them conveniently.

Coinbase is pretty popular.  Just make sure to turn on 2 factor authentication.   Also treat it as a hot wallet as it is online.  But it is good to have something like it for spending money so you don't have to get cold wallet for each transaction you do.

Keep the majority of your coin in a safe cold wallet.

People can advise newbies on what wallet to use but I can't stress enough that so many bitcoin thefts & lost coins are as a result of user error.
Seriously guys do as much research as you can, leave nothing to chance.

We are talking about your money here, leave nothing to chance, take no risks.
I use a mixture of Bitcoin QT, paper wallets and blockchain.info (for smaller amounts).
Make sure you do regular full computer, anti virus scans if you keep coins in an online wallet & if you are doing paper wallets please god create them in offline mode with encrypted passwords.
Use 2 factor authentification where possible & create complex passwords that you use nowhere else.

Sometimes you can get hacked & it's not your fault but I see so many people falling for dumb phishing sites & getting scammed.
Protect your bitcoins like you would your fiat in your leather wallet in every day life.
Defend them with your life :D

Bitcoin core is probably the best to use. or if you want to change to an alterative there really is only one option and that would be armory. any others are possibly silly to use and doesn't really contribute to the bitcoin network unlike bitcoin core. but if you cant get on with bitcoin core I can understand why people would use others.

+1 for MZ's answer.

However, Coinbase does have a new multisig option (https://www.coinbase.com/multisig) (which isn't the default, you have to go looking for it). I haven't checked it out yet, but if it's what it says it is, I'd consider it a good option if you use their multisig wallet, and only that.

I don't know if I stick with Web-based or go to Desktop applications
i am using mycelium and bit-x wallet apps on my android and belive me they both are good and smooth on the uses and are not that much easy to get hacked but if you want the security at the top most layer then yes you have to get stick with blockchain

the only con about bitcoin core is that the wallet launch takes a few minutes. can't seem to get it to open faster. beside that for pc bitcoin core is the best option.

Wallets are only as safe as you are. Blockchain.info is very safe providing you set up all the security features. Make sure you have 2-factor authentication set up at a minimum.

yes i also far safer, use the wallet blockchain + google authenticator.
but a few weeks ago my friend experienced the strange enough, he wears blockchain and also use 2FA security, but still he could hack wallet hmm.

Blockchain.info is the most secure one.

There's no way an online wallet will ever be the most secure, you really need to read up more on wallets.

Your risks with an online wallet is substantially bigger as many of the security related aspects are out of your control. You have to trust the third party providing the service and hope that they implement the best security possible and even then there is no guarantee that they will not be hacked.

I do not like online wallets but if I have to recommend an online wallet it would have to be either Xapo, coinbase and or Circle as these at least offer insurance should there be any losses which are not attributable to negligence on your side like for example when one of their employees make of with one of their wallets.

With Blockchain you have no insurance whatsoever. But as said, online wallets should never be used for anything more than daily spending amounts.

With Xapo I guess so as your funds are not actually on the card as its not a preloaded card. The card is linked to your Xapo wallet so your btc is in the wallet and not on the card. So if they go 'down' I guess so does your wallet.

I know they do carry insurance but I'm not sure exactly what is covered. Maybe best to visit their site and read up on the insurance they have and what it covers.

Trezor is worth the money.

It is a deterministic wallet so when you set it up you get 24 words that you write down and then keep very safe, very secret, and very secure.  You can make multiple copies of the 24 words, give a copy to a trusted attorney, whatever you think is secure.

If you ever lose your Trezor (or any other deterministic wallet) then you just buy another one, enter the same 24 words and like magic you get your entire wallet back, all of the recieive addresses, all of the change addresses, all of the accounts, including all of the transactions you ever made using that wallet!

All you need to do is keep the 24 seed words safe and secret and you never have to back up your wallet.

This is what makes deterministic wallets the easiest to use, safest and most secure way to do Bitcoin.

I have been using Coinbase (more than 9 months), so far it has been pretty solid. But I do not have more than dust (less than 50 USD worth in BTC), if you have more than that you should consider a paper wallet.

not hating on coinbase but i heard too many horror stories on their support. So I would just move my coins whenever you buy from them.

To a actual desktop wallet or something more better, incase they claim your coins were never there or something.

People had their Bitcoins in accounts at Mt. Gox [a now defunct Bitcoin exchange].

These people learned the hard way that there is a huge difference between having your Bitcoins in a wallet = you own/have/posses them and having them in an account = you have basically lent them out on account.

Is coinbase a wallet (you own and posses the Bitcoins) or an account (you have lent them out and coinbase now posses the Bitcoins).

This is important as the account holders at Mt. Gox (and all the other plethora of "banks" that have gone under) found out when they tried to get their Bitcoins back.

Strange to see a global moderator advising this. anything which comes into contact  with online properties is vunerable. the way blockchain.info works its vunerable to rnb and man in the middle attacks and possibly a hostile take down which would mean people losing access to their private keys unless they export them which in itself means its being broadcasted to client side which effectivly opens it up for exploits although it is encryped of course

Yes, you can use exchange deposit addresses for receiving Bitcoin but that's not OP ask for. He's asking about secure wallet, we can't talk about exchanges when a 3rd party site provide our coins security.

An extended private key must be imported into a deterministic wallet.

Trezor, Wallet32, etc.

Bitcoin core is not a deterministic wallet.

Did you really get an extended private key or is it the list of seed words?

Xapo is a pretty secure Bitcoin wallet. It uses the "cold-storage" method of storing your coins, making it difficult for a hacker to steal your coins. You could also get a Tezor, but those are more expensive.

Your statement above is very concerning.  You said "it gave me a extended private key".  I have just started to research this wallet and it looks to be a very well thought out open source modern deterministic wallet.

I still like that the extended private key never leaves the Trezor and it is basically impossible to get it.  That is why I like the Trezor.

With access to the extended private key it is possible to steal all the Bitcoins from ALL of your Bitcoin addresses in all of your accounts you have ever created or will ever create from that extended key.

Losing control of an extended private key is much worse than losing control of a single private key.

I do not know where you can import an extended private key directly.  I have taken the seed words from the Trezor and imported them into other deterministic wallets.  When you create a copay wallet I would expect it to give you the seed word list so you can import that into other deterministic wallets, but it sounds like they do not do that.

Since that is what they gave you I expect you can import it into another copay wallet if you lose your phone.

I plan to download the copay wallet and play with it a bit.  It looks like it may be something pretty sweet.

every single bitcoin wallet that is created so far can be secure "to some extent".
for example you can have an online wallet and make it secure enough that you never lose your bitcoins but you always have to consider the risks of using each wallet.
i categorize the risks this way (from high to low):
web wallets
online wallets where you do NOT have your private keys (like xapo, coinbase): highest risk so i keep lowest amount there
online wallets where you have your have your private keys (like blockchain.info)

desktop or cell phone but still online
more security because it is on your pc, but still susceptible to malware and keyloggers
medium to low risk

offline wallet
any sort of wallet which is offline, either a wallet program like bitcoin-core, Electrum, Multibit, Armory that you just run on an ALWAYS offline pc or any sort of paper wallet as long as they are created with the right software.
this is the most secure so i keep the highest amount here.

You forget Hardware Wallet
It's hardware that was made only to keep your bitcoin secure, you can use it online or offline.
It's expensive but could be safer than most offline wallet

Example : Trezor (https://www.bitcointrezor.com/) & Ledger Wallet (https://www.ledgerwallet.com/)

Ledger wallet seems to be much cheaper than Trezor which one of these two is the best?

Example : Trezor (https://www.bitcointrezor.com/) & Ledger Wallet (https://www.ledgerwallet.com/)

Ledger wallet seems to be much cheaper than Trezor which one of these two is the best?

Trezor is old one and Ledger still new one but both of them seems promising as most secured wallet.
That's make me kindda difficult to select between them

blockchain with a 2fa security and bitcoin core or bitcoin qt these both are the strongest, safest, and most efficient wallets till now
Yes, it is true. I also only use blockchain + 2FA, I use this already several years and has never been my bitcoin lost in hack  :)

every single bitcoin wallet that is created so far can be secure "to some extent".
for example you can have an online wallet and make it secure enough that you never lose your bitcoins but you always have to consider the risks of using each wallet.
i categorize the risks this way (from high to low):
web wallets
online wallets where you do NOT have your private keys (like xapo, coinbase): highest risk so i keep lowest amount there
online wallets where you have your have your private keys (like blockchain.info)

desktop or cell phone but still online
more security because it is on your pc, but still susceptible to malware and keyloggers
medium to low risk

offline wallet
any sort of wallet which is offline, either a wallet program like bitcoin-core, Electrum, Multibit, Armory that you just run on an ALWAYS offline pc or any sort of paper wallet as long as they are created with the right software.
this is the most secure so i keep the highest amount here.

You forget Hardware Wallet
It's hardware that was made only to keep your bitcoin secure, you can use it online or offline.

Is there any difference in performance or in security, except the price which is Trezor 99$ - Ledger 15€(or 29€)

i didn't forget hardware wallets, i didn't mention them because they are not free.
all the things that i mentioned in my earlier comment are my personal preference. so i never include hardware wallet because i don't see any benefit of paying for hardware wallet when i can make a secure offline wallet on my own and for free.

Xapo is a pretty secure Bitcoin wallet. It uses the "cold-storage" method of storing your coins, making it difficult for a hacker to steal your coins. You could also get a Tezor, but those are more expensive.
xapo is not a wallet..
you do not have acces to private key your wallet, when xapo's gone, your bitcoin is gone too

Xapo is a wallet, it's web/online wallet, check here: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet look at web tab, xapo is listed as web wallet.
But like oxiyusuf said, xapo is not give you a private key, it's "hot-wallet", so becareful to use web/online wallet and exchanger, don't store all coins there, it's risky.

I was using Xapo and Coinbase web wallet when i was a newbie , till now i use them , their is no problem with them, but now i have installed electrum in my desktop wallet and transfered all my bitcoins their for safety use.

so for now newly you can join xapo or coinbase after getting some knowledge about bitcoin wallets you can download electrum and install and use it because it is the safest way , becuase if electrum gets problem i can use any other desktop wallet with the destop saved bitcoin details.

Have just arrived the xapo debit card this week. It's now VISA instead of the previous MasterCard.
I have tried it in two countries in the EU yet and it works OK on POS terminals. If you buy something in different currency (e.g. the card is USD and you pay in EUR) they charge you 3℅ more.

Bitcoin core is the official wallet from the bitcoin community. It's thoroughly checked. But it has the feature of full validation. So it requires lot of initial synchronization and download time. I suggest electrum or multibit HD if you prefer light weight wallets.

Becareful to store amount on web wallet, better to use cold wallet or desktop wallet, Electrum have 2FA security too, multisig wallet, have seed word, and you don't need to download data for synch.

Desktop means only in PC, but coinbase has implemented that their users wallet can work also on web(online) and also in their mobile app(iOS or Android), but not offline :( . Trezor, chase and ledger are the best hardware wallets.

blockchain.info wallet is secure
but you must choose a very hard password (and only used for your wallet) and you have to change it frequently
also you must use anti keylogger
and of course use 2 factor authentication
and make sure that the connection is sercured with certifecated HTTPS connection

Best,

Best,
You're definitely wrong here. Blockchain.info should not in fact be called a safe wallet at all. There were various incidents which resulted in users losing a great sum of money several times due to their negligence.
A hard password would not help at all if they decides to change the code such that it captures your password. This can effectively allow them to steal all the funds from the private keys on their server.
2 factor authentication allows the wallet to be downloaded only when the key is correct. Someone could in theory intercept your wallet when you key in correctly and this wouldn't help at all if there is an inside job or poor RNG.
A common misconception is that HTTPS connections means that it is secure. This is definitely untrue. People were using HTTPS on tor and their wallet still got hacked, it would be more secure if its an onion website. 0-day exploits are also possible with HTTPS, for example, the recent heartbleed which was discovered way long before majority of the sites started patching and people's information might have been stolen long ago.

Everyone is mentioning their favorite wallets, but not technically the "most secure" wallets. By definition, the "most secure" would be a wallet not connected to the internet, so the bitcoins cannot be stolen - which would be an offline wallet. Not a web wallet, desktop wallet, or mobile wallet. All those wallets are of course great, work well, and most are built with security in mind, but aren't the "most secure" way of safekeeping your bitcoins; the best way is offline cold storage. If you want to see how others rank bitcoin wallets, you can see the top ranked bitcoin wallets here: http://bitcoinx.io/wallets/

They are not as good as the cold or paper wallet.  But far better then most hot wallets, or internet connected wallets.

Someone was able to "hack" to get the passphrase of the wallets and easily get the bitcoins.

I think were talking about security from others.   Paper can be laminated to make it  be more resistant.  Even can store copies on USB.  Just keep them safe.

As far as security if done right paper wallets really are very secure.   And you should store them where they are not effected by elements like water, or where others see them.

I use XAPO online wallet and I find it quite good and safe because each login they will send one time password to registered mobile number so I find it quite safe unless some one destroy their server it self then do not know. But those are worst cases and also if one think those worst cases then no wallet will be safe to use.

For large amounts of money, nothing beats a properly generated paper wallet. In my opinion, then a paper wallet is more safe than a trezor.

In desktop wallets, Bitcoin core is the safest because it downloads the entire blockchain history. Unlike electrum and multibit, there was a vulnerability which could have caused the loss of money a few months back as miners were spv mining.

hi,Im new on this and I was wondering what is the most secure bitcoin wallet ? is it fine if I continue with blockchain.info ? nothing to fear from ? I won't lose my BTC or anything else ? thanks
I don't know if I stick with Web-based or go to Desktop applications

The most secure wallet is one in which you maintain possession of your private keys. The easiest way to do that and still be able to easily make day to day transactions with complete protection against malware is to use a hardware wallet. Forget paper wallets or brain wallets.

There are several hardware wallets on the market but the most widely reviewed and accepted is Trezor. It is easy to learn to use, costs $99 and will also work with Mycelium wallet on your Android phone. Trezor has their own web wallet that works fine but you can also use it with several other wallets.

When you initialize your Trezor you are given 24 words (the seed) that you can use to regenerate your wallet if you lose it or break it. As long as you never lose that list of 24 words your bitcoin are completely secure. If you doubt the utility and security of Trezor just visit their website and read the reviews.

how does it affect the daily transactions you are doing? i run bitcoin core with the full blockchain and everything works perfectly fine. beside that, you are also helping the network as your client with full blockchain functions as a node.

IMO, all of the wallets are somewhat safe and secure.

You don't know which one may be hacked, which is a perfectly possible event.
So I chose one with 2FA, mnemonic, phone access, and alias.

That is blockchain.info.

It also has relatively low fees, and the fact you can use private wallets.

My other wallets have been Hive, and Coinbase.

Hive was painfully basic, little to no security.

Coinbase's fees were a tad high and there was talk of lower security/hackages.

So, I swapped over to blockchain.info, which has all of the security options stated above, it has the same addresses, and it also *has the 5+ ways to download|backup your wallet!*

Seems pretty damn secure to me!

Yes, it is always possible to have your wallet be hacked, site wide.
Just like having Paypal, or some other big bank.
Just like having a bank being hold up and robbed at gunpoint.

But if you have 8+ ways to keep your shiz safe, there is def. no way your personal wallet will be hacked :)

Just my thoughts as a growing bitcoin newbie

If you mean about the encrypted link between a server and a client then most of the websites nowadays have implemented SSL.
It makes their website secure but the OP is asking about the wallet how secure is it, but coinbase wallets are not much secured.
They can be shut down at any time that the coinbase can be offline or out of the market, so your don't possess in your hand.

I installed the green address app on my cousin's phone. I think its pretty convenient and moderately secure.

All the desktop wallets are secured if we go with encrypted. So, if the private keys are within you and it's encrypted by a strong password, that wallet is the secured one.

Or use cold wallets.  This is the risk with any hot wallet is that you lose it to malware/virus.

Two factor authentication can help.  In some cases they could have the password but if you have 2 factor that is something not on computer the password alone does them no good.

Coinbase does not give you the public key nor private key just like all shared online wallet. They help you to sign the message and no keys would be leaked in the process. Additionally, you need your private key to sign the message.

Desktop wallets are more secured than online wallet in my view. Because in desktop wallet the private keys are being kept within our hard disk. But, on a online wallet your privatekeys are not with you. So you are sharing your private information with third party.

Securing bitcoins is the first eduction we need to spread among newbies. Because people focus on making new bitcoins
and leaving the wallet security. That may end up in fatal. So, to avoid that kind of situations, we must secure our wallet first then start earning bitcoins.

Cold storage is the best way to secure bitcoin wallet. When nobody knows the funds available with you, then the chances to steal from you would be very less. When everybody needs a hot wallet to manage daily transactions, then
cold stored bitcoin has nothing to do for that. Then we need a strong password.

I don't know if I stick with Web-based
if you want to use web-based u can use blockchain.info, 2fa enabled with sms or email verification
or go to Desktop applications
Bitcoin Core is Best choice

Maybe Armory is the best one, but I hope more wallets will be peer reviewed and we will have safety in all of them and only the design will be different.

It is enough secure but it does not make completetly safe.
Because it depends also and from you, a strong password.
Also implementing the two factor authentication which increase the security level.

It is true it is not 100 pecent safe.  But it does have some insurance which most BTC sites/wallets do not.  So it is a nice feature for them to have.

Basically if you are targeted as a single person and account is compromised because of you then you lose your btc no insurance.  Turning on 2 factor is  a good idea as even if a "bad guy" has your password they cant log in without that 2nd factor authentication.

But if site has a hack where it's coinbase's fault, then yes you should get your coins back.    So how it was compromised is a big deal as far as their insurance protection.

Coinbase has a good think that even if someone bypass the password you can activate the 2FA for transaction over x.xx BTC.
This makes even more secure your bitcoins in your "wallet", we should try to get most of the security features.
Even though we don't control completely the funds, because coinbase does not provide private key.

That is part of their security though not giving out the key.   I suspect to get their digital assets insured it had to be locked down pretty tight.

For a advanced user it would be nice to have the private key.  But honestly for a new user they are doing them a favor not handing out the key.   So I think there is good to it.  But i admit I don't completely like the idea of not being able to use a private key and import your own btc into a wallet off their site.

I'm guessing vault is just a more solid cold storage. If you want to secure your bitcoin i still would not trust a 3rd party. You could look into the armory wallet and set it up on a 100% permanent offline computer that will basically act like the hardware wallets you can buy for BTC.

There are many great wallets that are easily secured. Also use paper wallets and if you have money and enough coins, than you should buy a hardware wallet.

Take your own research and be careful when trying (testing) new wallets.
You can take a look at bitcoin.org and see that there are many options.
Some of them offer less security and some other provide you private key(like Mycelium, multibit, bitcoin code etc..)

I would agree in most cases.  But for non-technical user coinbase with 2 factor is pretty good.  Coinbase is different then many as they have that insurance.  Read on their site to see what it covers.

But if you are a technical user who can properly keep private key yes it is better, as you have complete control.  Assuming that you store it safely and properly.

I have to mostly agree with that point of view, but if you want to store serious about of BTC and you're "non-technical" you should hire someone technical to do it. If the amount is within acceptable losses for you, then sure. Coinbase as a convenient vault storage sound better than other online wallets.

I don't think they can beat a 100% offline computer. One that has never touched the internet ever and has a secure backup copy somewhere within an encrypted usb key and or printed encrypted paper in a bank safety box. But then other than that, Coinbase sound good enough for most users.

The idea of hiring someone to setup your BTC holdings is horrible.  I don't care how much trust you have for a "non-technical" user do not hire someone to set up your private key and cold storage.   You want it to be you eyes only or it defeats the whole reason of being cold.

I'm not saying it's perfect for all users mainly technical and safe ones.  But for someone who does not know how to use bitcoin properly coinbase forces you to not have a private key.... which is good if a user does not know what they are doing.

Store bitcoin in paperwallet is like print your bitcoin into paper, like fiat. So you need to hide your paperwallet in place which only you know, maybe keep in deposit box like in bank but it for yourself only.

I don't think having someone guide you and teach you into the process is inherently bad. You should probably go through the motion of learning how to use a hardware wallet or setup a offline computer one way or another. I do guess the way i worded it might of made it sound like "oh just have someone else store and keep your BTC for you, just trust that person, no problem". Which i'd have to agree is subpar.

But if you have serious BTC and you're not sure how to go about it, i don't think there's another way to go about securing your funds. I'm pretty sure people/companies with a lot of money won't shy away at hiring a security consultant for their vault setup.

I guess someone that's really clueless could get exploited by a crook but i think if you're that unknowledgeable about Crypto, general computer stuff and logic, you should stay away from storing BTC or dealing with BTC in the first place in most cases.

The hard part might be for these people to self-evaluate to that fact.

I'd stay away from blockchain.info right now. The recent attacks really show how shoddy their stuff is and people actually have had quite a bit of issues with their API for a fair bit of time now.

And in term of security feature, i think the best would be Armory, since that lets you more easily sign transaction with your offline cold storage computer that never has and never will touch the internet.

I don't know, I just wouldn't trust an online wallet with more than 1 BTC. Any online wallet out there. And if you have to trust online wallets, I would choose 3 different ones and put 0.33 BTCs in each one of them, just to spread the risk.

About someone securing your coins, yes this is terrible if it's not a person that you absolutely trust. Your brother, mother, father. If you don't know how to secure your bitcoins by yourself, you shouldn't own any.
Also, to secure your coins is not that hard in my opinion. Setting up a wallet for Ethereum in the command line window, that was hard. Backing up the seed of your Electrum wallet by following simple instructions is not hard at all.

Multibit HD is the next generation wallet with hardware wallet option. I vote for Multibit HD for the secured wallet.

There should be no risk with having someone show you how to set it up unless you're completely clueless and somehow manage to hand over your BTC. Setting up an offline wallet isint that hard.

And for Coinbase, i think its the least worse Online wallet. I wouldn't store significant amount of money there. A few BTC at most, in the vault, supposedly insured should do, however.

Hmm secure is kind of ephemeral here. It seem to mean different things to different persons.

All the wallets that have been checked are all as secure as any other if properly used. In term of the most security features, the wallet that would win this tag would be Armory, since it make the deal of signing transaction with a offline computer much easier.

And the way Armory work is very similar to how hardware wallet works.

I guess that if a person actually came to your home and set up the software could be somehow installing everything with a privkey he already own, i guess this is some kind of thing you should keep in mind in the BTC world.

I guess we should say hire someone to hold your hand through the process of learning and setting it up, maybe online. You're not really physically storing wealth in a container, so there's no physical setup of a vault to do.

Its not like there's much that need to be done physically anyways. You just install the software on a offline computer, then learn how to sign transactions on the offline computer. If a very small step up from normal bitcoin usage.

The problem is a person loading software from a USB and you do not know about it.   Look up about bad usb.  You should never on any of your computers let someone plug a USB drive of theirs in.

If you pay someone and he uses a bad usb exploit it might look like hes nice and helping.  But it could be capturing keys from everything after bad usb exploit was used.

Yea that happened to me, i asked for internet technical service and they came to my house , and they needed to put a software on my PC that checks the internet, so they asked if they can put the usb in my pc, and i said no.

So they justh ad to put in from CD, which is safer. After that i scanned my pc and no virus was on it.

A cd could still contain something bad.  But most will use USB's as it is so easy to plug in for a few seconds.

It really is scary everyone should look up bad usb.  You will never let someone use a usb in your computer again.

I know how vulnerable the usb port is for bypassing security, but i never pictured the process as having someone physically go to your house and show you how to do something you already know how to do (Use a bitcoin wallet).

Its not very any more complicated than that, you just need to keep the wallet instead, on a offline computer and then you have your cold storage that cannot be hacked. There's guides for that but if reading is somehow hard for you, then you just hire someone to walk you through the process for you.

No it was technical service for my internet, it had nothing to do with bitcoin.

But i dont like any people putting USB or stuff in my PC, i just shared this example to see why people need to be cautious , and have many antiviruses on the PC.

Wrong advice. I know people which have lost their bitcoins have in this kind of wallet. I don't know how and in which way but the fact that are at least two the verified cases in which people has loss of their bitcoins shows that this wallet it is not at all secure. I use coinbase. Never heard or read even one case of hacking of this wallet. Never heard or read any case of loss of bitcoins from this wallet.

I want to add here even that coinbase paid your fees when you send bitcoins while blockchain don't do this. In the last wallet the fee are paid from the sender (from you).

So coinbase is not only more secure but even convenient.

If using this make sure to use 2 factor authentication.  This is essential with a hot wallet like blockchain.  It is a good wallet for a little spending money.

But I highly suggest cold storage over it for storing a decent amount of coins.  Web wallets just do not offer the same security that a proper paper wallet does.

Well the password wouldn't be a password, it would be a physical encryption key. To be fair i'm not sure properly secured funds can be ever hacked or stolen, you'd need to find a vulnerability in how the internal transaction works and stealing millions would be somewhat impossible if they store 95-99% of all the bitcoins in cold storage, as they should.

Depends on user.  If done properly a paper wallet stored safely is still the best cold storage device there is.  You cannot hack paper, it does not have internet.

A hardware wallet is great security in most cases.  But again it is not safer then a paper wallet (unless someone uses paper wallet wrong)

Probably Blockchain I think. Because there you need identifier and password. Even if someone knows your password he have to know the identifier to be able to login and that is only possible to those who have access to that email with which that blockchain wallet was created

That's why I still trust blockchain and have done $4000+ of transaction so far with Blockchain

It is still a hot wallet so it is not considered "most secure".  Cold and hardware wallets beat it on security every time if done right.

Even with 2FA and password it is not 100 percent secure.  But yes adding 2FA is a big jump in security.   But I suggest you read about cold wallets.  Can be as simple as paper wallet, or lots of variations.

The same question goes and to others web wallets,
I think that they should refill users balance and get back in the feet.
I think that the most secured wallet should be Trezor as it has many good feature that's why it cost a bit expensive.

I have said it hundreds times and I will repeat it again, you shouldn't use online wallets, especially not blockchain.info which is the buggiest wallet out there. Every day opens up a new thread where some of the users have problems wigh blockchain.info.

Most secure online is actually a hardware wallet. They store online with like Trezor but require the hardware wallet.  But no doubt blockchain is one of the better one's for hot wallets.

Just make sure to use hotwallets right for spending money.   Keep most money in cold wallet's for safety.

In desktop wallets, Bitcoin core is the safest because it downloads the entire blockchain history. Unlike electrum and multibit, there was a vulnerability which could have caused the loss of money a few months back as miners were spv mining.

but downloading the entire blockchain isnt really good as it can affect your daily transactions IMHO

how does it affect the daily transactions you are doing? i run bitcoin core with the full blockchain and everything works perfectly fine. beside that, you are also helping the network as your client with full blockchain functions as a node.

maybe he means that the process of synchronizing with the network would take long for him. so if you want to spend your coins you have to wait a long time first before being able to do so.
After a long time, the synchronization time would be significant. Arguably, any reliable SPV client could provide a good amount of security but we are talking about the most secure one. Bitcoin Core does no trust miners like SPV clients do and it would be insecure if miners don't follow it and the network would reject it, exposing risk of double spending to SPV clients as they would see it as a confirmation while the network reject it.

Yes. both of them are proven safer wallets as of today.
Cold storage and strong encryption are other option if you go with any wallet type regardless of any platform.

Get a cheap pc/laptop that never see the internet. Install a wallet via usb

But if you choose only that way then it can be unsafe.
Because if this pc stops working and you don't have any other backup then you already have lost the bitcoins.
At least 2-3 backups you should have, 1 usb, 1 paper wallet, 1 pc/laptop etc..

You won't walk on the streets with all of your bitcoins in your wallet I guess.
This is the reason why bigger mobile wallet providers offer a so called cold storage (XAPO wault, etc) next to your everyday spending wallet.
It's like you only take a little amount of cash in your leather wallet in your pocket, the rest of your money is in the bank, in the safe at home or in your pillow :)
In this case you can manage your everyday spending of your bitcoins from your mobile wallet with a lower balance and the rest of your BTC can be safe in cold storage or in phisical storage like Trezor.

But most secure in the sense not vulnerable from cyber attack or system crash.
To solve system crash, we must need multiple back ups.
To prevent  attack or hacking, we must go with strong encryption with long multi-character set password.

If you want the most secure wallet, what you want is to have it on a offline computer. Does not get any better. And the wallet best suited to make signing transaction with a offline computer the easiest is Armory.

You just insert usb key, and let it guide you through the process of importing and signing the transaction with the offline computer.

It never connect online, so its the safest.

Depending on how its setup, the best protection here, beside the usual anti-malware, would be a two way firewall. Normally windows let outgoing connection go out no problem, which means its very easy for a infected computer to send out your personal information.

With a two way firewall, its much harder.

You also can use paper wallet and store the details in a file in your pc/print..
Or store then in your phone but it's all about the security and the activity that you do.
To take the preventive measures install anti-virus, anti-malware,advanced firewall and other high security tool.
Paper wallet is the cheapest and is secured enough, but if you want more safety i would go for Trezor.

The worst Bitcoin wallet by far! Being removed from official website wallet page only confirms this. The buggiest wallet out there that was very prone to the recent malleability attacks. Many users have complained about it in the last few weeks as you said it and yes it's an online wallet. We shouldn't be really using online wallets!

If you want to do cold storage using two computers at the moment Electrum is your better choice. It functions just like Armory with online/offline wallets. Armory 0.93.2 will not work with the latest Bitcoin Core 0.11.1. Armory signs HighS while 0.11.1 mandates LowS.

I have used both Electrum and Armory for cold storage using two computers and have to tell you that Trezor is easier and cheaper. It works fine with latest Electrum 2.5.1. When working, Armory as a fully validating node does have a privacy advantage over Electrum because the Electrum server you use knows which addresses you are using. But Armory is no more secure than Trezor.

If Armory (or Bitcoin Core) ever supports Trezor that would be the ideal combination for privacy plus security. Until then I am fine using Trezor with Electrum 2.5.1. Heck, if you cannot afford $99 for a Trezor the Ledger Nano with Starter USB is only $40. Both are proven and work with your phone.

Ledger Nano i think that do the same job like Trezor but unfortunately i don't own any of them.

For me all wallet is secure but theres a way to secured it more and better.. How? Heres my step if you windows just install a virtual box or any vm ware install os like win 7 or xp.. after that use bitcoin core as your wallet or electrum then dont install any thing in the virtual xp or win 7 or 8 now Download a firewall block or any software that can block any outgoing and incoming traffic from firewall. open  the software block all out going and incoming traffic in to the firewall then put the bitcoin core or electrum wallet as whitelist... thats very good ways to secured your wallet...

then how you do a transaction, you must be connected to the net to do it

my suggestion is a hot wallet that run on a dedicated server for Core only

Leaving a dedicated server running (I assuming connected to internet) does not sound like a great idea overall.  It is better then those running hotwallets on machines they surf web and do lots of things on.

I think cold storage is the way to go with sizable amounts.  If spending money only sure hot wallet is not to bad for that amount of BTC.

You can easily download the UXTO info and construct a signed transaction in core and broadcast it. I would however say that there are little difference between wallets in terms of security when it comes to cold storage.

Yesterday is a good example of why you should not trust in blockchain alone.  They were down... what if you needed to get in?  A paperwallet of the account is kinda important for issues like that.

With a paperwallet you could have put it in another wallet and used it even when blockchain was down.  It's honestly hard to beat cold paper wallet.

Yes. Blockchain.info is well known for it's frequent down times. But the good thing is we have full control over our private keys which is more useful if we are capable of importing private keys into some other wallets.

Some wallets like greenaddress.it use method to allow users to have access to their Bitcoins even if they go down. Online wallet are still a risk however, they are still a central point of failure. What if the hacker captures all the private key by changing the script(with wallets like greenaddress.it where private key is never sent to server)?

For desktop wallet, password reuse isn't a significant problem as they cannot access your Bitcoins without your encrypted private key.

Well ok then greenaddress seems to be one of the best web wallets.
For example coinbase does not allow you to have the private key.
If they have any maintenance or they go offline, then you can't access your bitcoin.

The best reading on why it's not good for storage of lots of BTC is going to be reading of HOT/COLD wallets.  Read up on them.

Blockchain is a very nice wallet for spending money, that is what it shines doing.  Storing large sums of BTC over a long period of time is where cold wallets really shine.

I wouldn't say that if I were you. Blockchain.info should not even be considered as a wallet. It is too unreliable these days. If you're going for one, go for greenaddress.it (http://greenaddress.it). Even though most think that greenaddress.it has a long seed to remember, it is harder to remember the identifier on blockchain.info. Both also have an android app.

Brainwallet wasn't secure in the first place. It was already known that it can be easily bruteforced by running a dictionary against it as many used a weak passphrase. The release of this program (http://www.wired.com/2015/07/brainflayer-password-cracker-steals-bitcoins-brain/) further demonstrated the ease of running a bruteforce attack. Most online wallet don't generate wallet this way so you're safe.

Personally i think there is none 100% safe wallet, before i used blockchain.info but aftet they whent down some days ago i changed to bitcoin core and i like it much more than blockchain.info

Since the brainwallet addresses were able to be cracked,
I really believe that there isn't any 100% safe wallet.
Soon i will order a hardware wallet maybe Trezor and will see if it worth or not.

Well another but more secured and advance one is this.
https://brainwallet.io/ which i believe for now this is not crackable.
Has anyone used this: Bitsafe – 2nd Gen or 1st Generation seems promising.

I use XAPO's wallet for daily spending, just because of the debit card linked to it. I can pay directly from my bitcoin wallet, thru VISA's system. They have a so called cold storage as well (vault, and they say that it's insured somehow). But if I would have a really lots of bitcoin I would have use a phisical cold storage. I don't know if it would be paper wallet or Trezor kind, but I hope that in the near future I have to think about this dilemma :)

May i know what rates are when you try to withdraw the money at ATM.
I think that they charge additional fees (hidden fees), is the exchange rate different from coindesk bitcoin price?

Depends on what your goal for that address is.  If it's spending money and not a lot then core or other good wallets would work fine.

But if storing a lot of BTC then things change.  Cold wallets are very important for long term holding.  Paper wallets if done right is one of the best way's to store BTC assuming it's done right and stored safely.

Blockchain is the Bitcoin Blockchain that stores all the transactions and blocks. Blockchain.info is a service.

Blockchain.info or any online wallet is not 100% safe when it comes to wallets. The webpage is loaded from their server which means that if someone gains access to it, the website can be changed. Also, blockchain.info in particular is very unreliable and stores encrypted keys on their server. Even though encrypted, they do not need your 2FA, they only need to bruteforce your password to gain access to the address.

Yes. Paper wallets are good when we considering online hacking. But we need to keep them safe from physical damages.
Bitcoin core and Armony need more resources for initial setup whereas Electrum is a light weight wallet, recommended for beginners.

I haven't try to withdraw money from ATM yet. As I understood from the official topic of XAPO here, they doesn't charge hidden fees. They only charge their official fee, which buils up some of their fee and the fee of the ATM network usage. The card issuer company has a dedicated page for this where you can check the actual fees per transaction. The rates are nearly the same like if you use your fiat card in a different bank's ATM.
I use only POS purchase in shops because it's really free.

What are the prices (roughly) of these cold hardware wallets? Is the cheapest for beginners, or the price doesn't reflect the security of it?
Do I think well that if you print a paper wallet, you can add funds to it while the paper is hidden somewhere, you only need to use the paper only if you want to spend from it?

all the software wallets are free to use like electrum, bitcoin core and armory. the only wallets you have to pay for are hardware wallets like trezor and bitcoin ledger. and yes you are correct, you can deposit money into a paper wallet without having the paper, but if you need to spend it you would need the private key from the paper.

Bitcoin-qt or bitcoin core are the most secured wallet so far created wallets. But this is not the meaning that the other wallets are not recommended. But the protection of your wallet or your bitcoin is completely based on your encrytion.

Get a cheap pc/laptop that never see the internet. Install a wallet via usb

But if you choose only that way then it can be unsafe.
Because if this pc stops working and you don't have any other backup then you already have lost the bitcoins.
At least 2-3 backups you should have, 1 usb, 1 paper wallet, 1 pc/laptop etc..
also the fact that everytime you need to spend your coins you would need to start up your laptop, meaning if you go outside and find a merchant that accepts bitcoin you wouldnt be able to pay them because your laptop would be at time.
the same logic applies for paper and usb wallets  :-[, i like bitcoin but i dont like the fact that it needs to be locked away to be safe,
You won't walk on the streets with all of your bitcoins in your wallet I guess.
In this case you can manage your everyday spending of your bitcoins from your mobile wallet with a lower balance and the rest of your BTC can be safe in cold storage or in phisical storage like Trezor.

ya but technically people still carry a majority of their cash in person by having a debit card or something like that. bitcoins the same as in they are both digital
It is completely different. With certain purchases, debit card does not require a pin while using it with micro transactions. It can be cancelled if you want to. If you lose a Bitcoin wallet without backup, you would lose it forever. If you didn't setup a pin then you're dead. If you did, you can restore access with a backup.

Printers also can get infected aswell but it is not as common.  If new printer some store the last so many prints in it.  I suggest unplugging it for a few minutes and plug back in hoping to get rid of cache.

The older and dumber the printer the better  it is to use.  And of course don't use a public printer.

Bitaddress.org is basically a script written for generation of paper wallet. It is open sourced and anyone can check and build it themselves. The first screen is basically used to increase the entropy for the generation of private key. It can also be done offline and printed out. To spend it, you can download mycelium wallet and use the spend cold storage feature. It supports BIP38 encryption too.

I'm pretty sure the firmware can be infected since most printers can be connected to the network nowadays. Newer printers have a cache space of 8Mb+. This is due to the fact that many computer loads the info to the computer before they print and is therefore more efficient for the printer as it does not have to load from the computer slowly while its printing.

It is scary honestly on some of the flaws that are out there.  I have a computer security degree and can say there is always something new.

One of the worst is the huge all in one copiers that big businesses have (The combo copier/fax/email/etc).  You would be amazed at the amount of cache some have on it.   Also a amazing amount of installers will leave default credentials enabled, which allows a lot depending on company and model.

Do you need QR code for your paper wallet, or it is enough if you write down the private key _manually_ with pen on a plain A4 paper and after you laminate it? And put it into a safe afterwards, and later on if you need it, you just need to read ther private key from the paper? Can you use mycellium without QR for cold storage or it needs QR format anyway?
If you scan a QR code into mycellium, won't it remember for it after? How can I be sure that it does not store my privare key?

You can write it down. But being humans, there is a possibility of you making mistakes and it takes a long time. There isn't much difference between printing a Qr code and writing it down manually. AFAIK, Mycelium does not allow users to key in private keys when using cold wallet function. You are better off just printing the Qr code. If you insist, I would just generate it on a offline Raspberry Pi.

Mycelium is opensourced so you can review the source code yourself. They claim to delete the private key from memory once the transaction is sent. I haven't have time to verify the source code though.

for me i will choose to make QR code
my other method (aside from https://www.bitaddress.org/ )
create new address with vanitygen (offline mode) and create Qr Code with pc dekstop aplication after it you can printing the Qr Code and save it

NB : uninstal your QR code after create it also clean registry and chace

Blockchain.info is all the best Bitcoin wallet i have ever seen, best from other. It provides good security for securing your money in wallet.  :)

Well you think that it is the best but i don't think so.
Because last few weeks i saw many negative experiences from the members here in forum.
Also the official bitcoin website has removed blockchain.info from their wallet choices.

Cheers!

Since the official bitcoin website has removed from their list,
There is no more trust to use blockchain wallet.
I use that website only for explore and to see if any transaction gets confirmed.

People should never keep much coins on blockchain.info or any other web based wallet service. Never keep more coins in online wallets than you have in your physical wallet. In my case it's barely more than $100.

They are insured on coinbase on their side.  So if hack happened and they were cause they should get insurance to pay the people who lost money (this has never been tested I don't think on having to be used but they show it's in place).

As far if you are targeted and it's from your side then coinbase is no insurance.  It's a loss to you.

So still paper wallet for long term storage is best.  But for a spending wallet with just a little in it not bad overall.

Printers also can get infected aswell but it is not as common.  If new printer some store the last so many prints in it.  I suggest unplugging it for a few minutes and plug back in hoping to get rid of cache.

The older and dumber the printer the better  it is to use.  And of course don't use a public printer.

My printer is unplugged 99% of the time. Is that safe?

Its a dumb printer it doesnt have LAN access, nor any other extra features.

i save more than 1BTC at online wallet (coinbase)
and save more than 1BTC at paper wallet

for me paper wallet is good place for long term wallet and online wallet is best place to save bitcoin for daily activity

Coinbase AFAIK does feature a cold storage function with keys stored at geographically distributed locations. It does not completely rule out the risk of their cold storage being compromised by RNG though. However, they would have tested it several times to ensure that the keys generated isn't weak. They are also insured.

Most printer have a cache, my cheap laser printer has a 8mb cache. Information although highly unlikely, can be extracted if you ever dump your printer.

A cheap printer is not a bad thing at all in this case.   Unplugging one like that for just a bit likely gets rid of cache.   It is really the all-in-ones that are harder to get rid of.   The huge zerox type and other brands.  They just store a LOT of data on them depending on configuration.

So people should not be printing in public/work.   So I suspect these printers will not be as big of issue for individuals as most don't spend in the thousands for a all-in one printer.

Cold wallet is meant to have more security.  So being slower and taking longer to access your coins is part of it.  As part you should have cold wallet stored somewhere safe.

Online wallet is a different creature.  It is easy to access and does not take long.  This is why you should only keep spending cash not all your money in online wallets.

I've read somewhere an article about creating a really safe bitcoin wallet. It's like booting linux from a live CD, create a wallet, save wallet.dat on 2 USB sticks. Put one of them into a safe, use only the second if needed. You can put BTC into your wallet without the USB sticks. If you want to spend, boot again the live CD, copy back wallet.dat and voila.
The trick is a fresh linux each time you want to spend to be sure no malware or any harmful thing is sitting in the back of your system to steal your BTC's.

Since Bitcoin Core uses change address, you have to find a way to disable it or update the backup every 100 transactions. In this case, I would go for Electrum as it has a user friendly offline signing feature. USB Sticks are also quite susceptible to physical damage and is quite unsafe. Electrum are HD wallets and does not require frequent backups, only the seed is needed.

I don't think blocktrail allows users to control any of the keys. For optimal security, the user must control at least n-of-m keys and the service must control less than n. This prevents the service from hacking any of your coins. Trezor is too expensive, Ledger HW1 is a cheaper option.

hi,Im new on this and I was wondering what is the most secure bitcoin wallet ? is it fine if I continue with blockchain.info ? nothing to fear from ? I won't lose my BTC or anything else ? thanks
I don't know if I stick with Web-based or go to Desktop applications
I would suggest you go for an offline desktop application like armory. Better security from hackers and you can hide your wallet key in your paper wallet or anywhere you consider safe enough.

Actually block chain is having good feature to keep secure BTC in your wallet. it have two time authentication so wallet will safe for sure and u can use coinbase wallet also it also have good feature in it you can find in google play store itself

Electrum, trezor, greenaddress.it all has 2FA feature. Using blockchain.info shouldn't be a choice at all. The way that they implement 2FA isn't safe. 2FA protects you from the client side attacks, bruteforce etc. But it doesn't protect you if an employee has access to the server storing the encrypted wallet.

Bitcoin Core does not qualify as a userfriendly wallet. It takes a long time for users to download and verify the entire blockchain if it's the first download or after several months. The bandwidth usage is also very high. SPV clients are slightly less secure as they trust the miners completely but takes seconds to setup.

Even bitcoin core takes lots of bandwidth and synchronization time for set up it's the only wallet indiscriminately developed by bitcoin foundation. But it's not recommended to all type of users only for advanced users can use all the features of it.

Thats nice, but if the site shuts down unexpectedly, what can you do with your online balance? Probably nothing. This is the reason why I have only little money in my web wallet. People prefer something like cold storage to put bitcoin in there to be after.

The problem of coinbase is private key, if coinbase shutting down his bitcoin wallet service and you didn't have "prive key" (because coinbase not give you acces to priv key) so you will lose your bitcoin :)

i prefer you to use bitcoin android app, safe and full acces also "pure nodes" like bitcoin core

Not saying that I like blockchain.info but they do allow users to have a backup of their private key and could allow users to transfer the private key to their desktop wallet. Wallets like greenaddress.it has 2 of 3 multisig address, users control 2, site controls one. The website wouldn't be able to get your coins and you can use your coins even if they closes down.

Its developed by satoshi himself, taken over by Gavin Andreasen. Bitcoin Foundation afaik, isn't involved in the development.

I can't agree too much on your point. You are right about an average user using an SPV client would be good enough but in reality, those who care about security should do so. It verifies the block individually and does not place any trust on anyone. SPV Clients on the other hand requires trust placed on the miners.

Airbitz is the best for mobile. It automatically backs up your keys, has One Touch Two Factor, password recovery questions, and all information is encrypted locally. If servers for some reason go down you can still access your funds and you hold the private keys. It also has a merchant directory so it's easy to find businesses to spend bitcoin near you. I think it's the easiest and most secure for people totally new to bitcoin. With Blockchain's app I would take extra caution and enable 2FA on your email address. There are more attack vectors for web based wallets as opposed to mobile ones.

For hardware wallets, I've used Trezor which is great and I've also heard Ledger is good too but do not have experience with that one.

Most secure would be hardware/paper wallets. Coinbase does have a feature which allows users to have full control over their keys with multisig vault. That wouldn't be as secure as creating one yourself IMO. However, the coins are insured against hacks so you would be quite safe imo.

It's funny to see that there are still people thinking letting their precious coins be controlled by a third party is secure  :D Even if they have the best insurance in the world, I would never ever leave coins online. If I have to use my mobile wallet to make some real life transactions, I send the exact amount to the mobile wallet and make the transaction. If there are coins left, I direcly send them back to my offline wallet. If my mobile wallet isn't in use, the balance is always zero.

Same counts for exchanges. If I am going to do some day trading, I simply send the amount of coins I want and start trading. When I am done trading the next day, or the day after that, all coins will go back to my offline wallet. It's that simple.

Its not really secure wallets because you dont have full control of your funds and still people can control your funds that is the founder of coinbase. :D
Every online wallet like coinbase, xapo, blockchain or anything it is no more secure than hardware wallet or desktop wallet. :P

Not to mention that Coinbase gives themselves right to close your wallet if they judge you have broken their ToS. Many accounts have been closed that were sending funds to online betting sites, poker rooms, etc.

Electrum or Multibit for desktop and you are good to go! Nobody will ever close your account and your funds will be much safer and solely under your control!

Most malware would require at least an internet connection to operate. Without it, commands can't be received by the malware if it exist in your computer and is hence very secure. Arguably, hardware wallets are more secure if the firmware is secure and open-source. However, I still find offline wallet quite secure.

It depends on your generation and spending methods. If you generate it on a freshly installed offline OS, you are likely not to have problems if the code used for generating the wallet isn't bugged. Same with the spending.

I'm pretty sure it is a yes. I haven't encounter anyone with problems using that offline generator. However, all in all, review compile the script yourself. By running a precompiled script, you are trusting your keys with the person who compiled it. I would recommend going for bitaddress.org though. The UI is much easier there.

DO NOT put a big holding wallet on a smartphone, it is not as secure as cold storage.  Treat it as hot storage, and only keep spending money.   There is just not enough good security for phones specifically if your rooted/jailbroken.

I can't remember the name but there is one that was a hardware but one was being designed with cell phone support internal.   Hopefully someone can link to that been a while since ive heard about it.

Get something on your phone with 2factor, so you at least have more then one password.  But again remember its a hot wallet don't keep much there.  Really read into cold wallets or hardware.  Not phone wallet.

Offline wallets are usualy the most secure. hiowever keeping large amount of money in any wallet is not recommended.
why? i cant agree with this statement if the wallet is a hardware one its nearly impossible to hack it in my opinion so why is it insecure?
Can you use hardware wallets with smartphones? Or they can be used only with PC's (windows only, or linux/mac also supported)?

Smartphones are quite secure but the user must not install too much apps. Arguably, this risk is almost the same as an desktop's. It is more of the fact that it is very portable and users can lose it easily.

Mycelium supports trezor if that's what you mean.

It all depends on the user though.  Say rooted and jailbroken phones... normally are not near as secure as one that was not opened up for that extra access.  Also it would become important to always be up to date on updates.  And as far as staying secure not installing much apps, or visiting certain sites again varies hugely based on person.

I think we agree on the key thing is that it should be considered a hot wallet.  So that really effects how it should be used.

hi,Im new on this and I was wondering what is the most secure bitcoin wallet ? is it fine if I continue with blockchain.info ? nothing to fear from ? I won't lose my BTC or anything else ? thanks
I don't know if I stick with Web-based or go to Desktop applications

The absolutely safest choice would likely be Armory, running on a system that you not only control physically, but have a deep level of trust that you are in fact the sole person in control of it (meaning, Windows as an OS is likely out).

But since you're currently using a web wallet (blockchain.info), I suspect you're not really asking about the absolutely safest choice, but wonder if online wallets are "safe enough". Right?

There's no easy answer to that, since it heavily depends on the total value you plan to store in your wallet. For anything above 1 BTC, I would personally recommend not to use an online wallet.

On the other hand, Armory, or Bitcoin Core can be a bit cumbersome to get to work, and are maybe not for everyone. As an in-between solution, I think Electrum (http://electrum.org/) is an excellent choice. Installation is trivially easy, you avoid downloading the entire Blockchain, and it uses a deterministic seed that allows to recreate your private keys in case you ever lose your computer.

In terms of security, there is a small trade-off compared to, say, Armory, in that you trust a third party to provide you with an accurate version of the Blockchain. Note however that this does not mean your stored funds are in any way at risk, or that your transactions can be altered -- the only possible attack vector (to my knowledge) is that of delaying a transaction you want to send. And even that has never happened once, as far as I know.

You can see by my signature that I'm a big fan of Electrum. I think everyone who currently uses an online wallet should seriously consider switching to it. /fanboy :D

Thanks for the answers to everyone.
My question was if there is a hardware wallet that is supported by mobile wallet applications. As far as I understood it correctly, Mycellium is the one wich supports one of them (trezor). I understand that you don't recommend the mobile wallet for storing more than 1 BTC because of security and the possibility of losing the phone.
If we only consider security, I don't really understand what can be the problem with a phone (compared to a PC) if I use the same hardware wallet (e.g. trezor). Does it matter if I use the trezor on different platform? Not the trezor itself that guarantees the security?

The most secure wallet you can get is one that you have with you, one you can disconnect from the internet when you want to.  I have my BTC placed on my Netbook.  This allows me to enter it to the system when I need something and take it offline when I am not using it.  I use another online wallet for an intermediate transfer to my wallet when I have something worth transferring.  If you can secure it off line, it is a great wallet.  just do not loose it, or it will be gone forever.

I have my BTC online.  I am not sure if this is a secure method, but I have never had an issue with it and my BTC is always there when I go to it.  I never had any transfer issues or accessing my BTC when I need to.  It is very easy and I have access to it anywhere I have the internet.

if you store your bitcoins in a 3rd party site like exchanges then your coins isnt really safe as you dont have the full control over your private keys so in the case of site closing without notice to their users then your coins will be gone or if they claim their hot and cold wallets are hacked

they're known for super cheap randomizing in their apps for example. which lead to some weird reuse of addresses...

better use something like blocktrail (HD wallet) or coinomi or mycelium.

1. Bitcoin Core
2. Hardware wallet
3. Paper wallet

armoury. it was built from the ground up to focus on security. i would rather not use a web wallet like some people have suggested as you dont have physical acess too the wallet.
as long as you dont do shady stuff on your PC you are preaty much at no risk of loosing your wallet file, and if you are, just back it up somewhere.

Bitcoin is based on cryptography. So, the strong encryption protects bitcoin ecosystem safely. Same way a strong encryption can protect your wallet as well as your bitcoins. We need to go the same way of bitcoin to secure our hard earnings.

I can understand Hardware wallets & Paper wallets being on the list , but Bitcoin Core being on the list and being the first one on it is just not too logical for me , all someone needs to do to hack that wallet is probably a file that gets the wallet.dat from the PC (just like the others wallets) .

Same way, bitcoin is the public ledger payments system. So everybody can see the address and it's balances. But bitcoin system's encrytion method do not allow to crack the private key of a particular address. So, basically bitcoin is a secured one. Only our wallets need a password to protect our bitcoins.

It is feature filled so I would say you can't go wrong in using it.

Blockchain.info used random.org to generate entropy but HTTPS was implemented and the error code was returned as a result and it was hence insecure in some devices which uses an bugged RNG. The entropy is now fully from random.org. It wasn't random.org's fault. Blockchain.info should have regularly audited it.

Same way, bitcoin is the public ledger payments system. So everybody can see the address and it's balances. But bitcoin system's encrytion method do not allow to crack the private key of a particular address. So, basically bitcoin is a secured one. Only our wallets need a password to protect our bitcoins.
If quantum computing does becomes a reality one day, the private key can be derived from the public key. This is a problem if there is address reuse. It can be easily migrated with a fork however.

Paper wallet would be the safest possible way to protect your bitcoins.
But I have been looking in to the USB based PI wallet. It seems like the most secure way to transact with your BTC yet. Just wiki it and you will see for yourself.

It is secure as much as you stay secured, have a strong password, 2FA activated and using a clean device(without viruses), but i have seen that blockchain is not allowing some users to withdraw their money sadly.

Can you point to article or where this is coming from?  That would be odd for blockchain to stop users from their own funds.

They allow you to get the private key through their paper wallet.. so you should be able to import it into about any wallet.

Link? They allow users to make backups of the private key into their computer to import. AFAIK, Blockchain.info never had a incident which the support refuses access to the wallet without valid reasons. If the support disallow user's access to the wallet when user does not have 2FA nor password, that's understandable, if not, they would potentially be allowing hackers to get into the wallet. Also, password is not sent to their server if you inspect the code. Any traces of them stealing Bitcoins can be easily seen.

That being said, Blockchain.info was removed due to the many security incidents that has happened.
