BTC price seems to have stopped falling, no radical new hardware has shown up, looks like we shouldn't expect a big diff change.

I am guessing -1.76 to -2.00% this time around. My 'for bragging rights' bet would actually be -2.26 to -2.5, however that spot is taken and I am not sure we will drop more then 2.5%

I'm still puzzling about the run of low block finding rates at the end of the last difficulty change. Not sure if this was just unusual luck or something offline but will be interesting to see over the next few days.

On the Bitmain website they say about the batch "This is the last round of production for AntMiner S5, and Batch 5 will be the second-to-last batch of S5 units to be sold."

So will be interesting if they have something planed out for next gen sooner then I thought.

Well it came out around dec s5  and last batch ships in June .
The s-1 came out around dec   and last batch shipped in June the s3's arrived in July.

So I guess the s7's arrive in July?
Of course this means not much room for the s6's
Time will tell.
 

In the mean time the Avalon 4.1 as nice a piece of gear as it is. Still costs too much I did the review on it and I have 3 of them,

 but at 6.15 btc for a 3 pack shipping included to the USA it cost too much.


1650 usd  for  2300gh when clocked to .51watts per gh same as the s-5

1505 usd for   4600gh    when stock clocked for 4 s-5's

avalon simply chose to mine their gear rather then sell to us.


I think we grow a little this diff adjustment but I stay committed to my -1.01 to -1.25 as it includes -1.11%

Looking at their hashnest numbers it seems their are deploying 1-2 PH/s per week at most. That's probably their production capacity. Shouldn't make too much impact on diff, and this batch was overpriced I think.

The data was a bit screwed up on the last day of the last difficulty period as I hadn't set things up to handle a negative difficulty adjustment properly. So I'm 0-2, first time I missed the daylight saving change, this time wasn't prepared for negative adjustment. Hopefully third time is a charm.

A lot of people  wondered why we got cold right at the end.  maybe some one turned 10ph off the last day and put it back on today.

people keep an eye out on google sheets you have a while to pick the 29th.  maybe this is a big bounce back jump.

I'm hoping 6 turns out to be high.  But hard to tell this early.  Once next gen chips come out I think we will skyrocket.  So far everyone is very very quiet about their chips it seems.

And I could be out of it but I wonder if litecoin difficulty of "Mar 19 2015    34,843    -14.53%    997,667 MH/s" was anyone switching over to BTC from Scrypt gear.

It's real early - if today (3/24) is like 3/14 (129 blocks solved), we're right back to 0%. In another 48 hours or so we should have a good idea +/- 3% of where we'll be based on the way things have been going.

The difficulty drop itself could have been enough to cause some to turn back on.

In addition, I don't think a single 164 block day is any reason to think that a large amount of hashing power came on. We'll know more in a couple days. That's why the predictions that include data from the previous difficulty period are more accurate. I'm trying to work on one of those, but it's a bit tough estimating something that (1) has natural statistical variance, and (2) has actual and somewhat unpredictable growth (positive or negative).

Are these the S5 Batch 5 miners being powered up? I didn't think they sold that many of them, only maybe 300 units or so.

If anything I think they should be powered down.  People were getting shipping notices.

Wondering how bitcoin wisdom work. If you check next difficulty is -0.67% (24-03-2015 9:30) and on the google sheet it is +9.79%

Who is the better to guess??

Bitcoinwisdom includes the blocks from the previous cycle into their estimate, and they don't seem to be adjusting for the difficulty change (although I could be wrong about that). In general they are wrong most of the time until the last couple of days, but then again - all estimates are like that.

Maybe the recent spikes are just luck? Slush's pool just did 10 Blocks in the last 12 hours, with only 12 Ph/s.

The price is down 14% for the week. It's $248 at the time of this writing.

Downward price pressure and no new efficiency hardware should continue to apply force against the difficulty.

AntPool had some massive luck today too. I wonder if the little extra BTC is also having an effect on the price. This should all sort itself out in the next week or so.

we have our first switch.
rules state a switch done before deadline is allowed. deadline is about 4.5 days from now.

I ask that everyone tries 2 or less switches. just so we don't go nuts  with changes.  Not in the rules just be nice to me as it would be very hard if everyone does 4 or 5 switches .  TIA Phil

I appriciate all the work you do on this.  It's become a fun game.

Maybe next week set it where a switch you only win 1/2 as much.   If switches are limited it benefits those who picked on first pick, and saves you from having to change people up to 2 additional guesses.

We'll see how this plays out. Until now we had very few if any switches. Don't forget that "switchers" are already penalized because the later you switch the fewer intervals are available. Let's see if this gets messy and if we need some kind of extra penalty.

It'll be interesting to see if Antpool stays lucky ... I wonder how accurate their reported hashrate is. Does it include Bitmain's own miners, for example?  [EDIT: Actually it wouldn't make much sense for it to under-report its hashrate ... it would have to pay its miners more proportionally than they deserve]

Assuming pool reported hashrates are accurate, we're not at 377Ph/s (which is the estimate for this difficulty period so far). In fact, pools that report haven't shown that much of an increase. Slush's pool has solved blocks at a rate consistent with a pool running at close to 30Ph/s over the last 24 hours, but its been constantly reporting just over 12 Ph/s.

That said, even if its luck, its put us 40 blocks ahead of pace already. There's no reason to think bad luck will even it out, so even assuming luck has played a major role the past two days we're looking at a 3-5% increase this period. Possibly more depending on what Bitmain shipped. I'd be shocked if we jump over 10% though. That would mean 33 Ph/s was added to the network... seems a bit of a stretch.

The day ended with 20 blocks solved too much. Looking at Antpools solved blocks they solved about 20 extra blocks today, so it could just be luck

But of course even if it's variance (i.e. the hashrate spikes and then drops) it's still going to have an effect on difficulty. See a couple of spikes from the recent past, green is the 2016-block/difficulty line. Bow to my Paint skillz.

That's exactly right ... even if you chalk it up to luck, there would have to be an equal amount of bad luck to cancel it out. However, I think if luck causes part of a difficulty increase, difficulty is likely to correct the next period (holding all else equal except for luck), unless there's an equal amount of luck.

Great and I bought myself a miner this week. Grrr....

And a NEW WORLD RECORD hashrate was just set. Breaking 378Ph/s.

Maybe KNCMiner and Bitfury are powering up their energy efficient miners.

Let's wait and see, if in two days we keep the Hashrate over 375Peta, we are in trouble otherwise, it's just a peak as the usual.

Today looks like another +10% day, most likely it will be +10 to +15% at the end of the cycle.

We are two days in the diff... things can change quickly. We have seen peak in hashrate before.

I was looking at AntPool and they seem to be having another good day (well, good for them, not so much for other miners).

Don't say that. I love keeping a constant difficulty, because then I can actually mine something.

While there was some good luck so far this period, its becoming more certain that there was also an increase in hashrate. That could be due to a combination of (1) the ddos attacks subsiding or at least being mitigated (which artificially lowered the last two adjustments), and (2) Bitmain's shipment of S5's. (They may have gotten their large 500+ orders out before the smaller orders, which are arriving now). There's also the possibility, as you've mentioned that equipment was moving as electricity rates adjust with summer coming in the Northern Hemisphere, where I'll speculate a large percentage of mining occurs. [Edit: The good news is that these are one-time factors - so if we have a large jump, there's no reason to think that we won't go back to the 2-3% average we've seen over the past several months.]  [Edit2: The price increase from the last couple weeks could also have an impact - exchange rate has an impact, but it may lag by a week or two... which would make me think there would be a drop off toward the end of this period or during the next]. 

I added an experimental difficulty projection to the sheet that factors in what has happened so far, as well as the 3, 5, and 7 day moving averages at various weights. Right now it is showing an 8.39% increase. I feel this is a little high, but we'll see.

Keep the the law of average in mind my friend ^_^

You don't need luck when you have a significant percentage of the total network hash power at your disposal.

i'm just saying that speculating on luck doesn't work on the long term.

Like if the network luck is high during the first 500 block it doesn't mean it'll be the same thing for the rest.

But yes, if someone was holding 50 Peta off for a month+, i guess so.

Bitwisdom and spreadsheet seem to be apart pretty far.  Which one is more accurate long term like now?

in this case I would blend the 2 and get an average. Then lean on the high side of the average.

This is setup as a possible free gift  with nothing to lose  so it is not gambling

  which is how I want it to stay.  Basically many people do not want to gamble for many reasons.

 This is one of the few spots on the site designed for fun.  Free spec on the diff the price and a free guess for .1btc.

There is speculation that antpool had significantly above expected luck to account for part of the jump.

Obviously some of the jump is from new (likely more efficient) hardware being brought online. Part of it could probably be explained by batch 5 (?) of S5's being brought online. Bitmantech had an unusually long production run for this batch of S5s so it is possible they were using some of their production capacity to build their next generation of more efficient miners and brought them online for testing/were mining for themselves. Another possibility is that a private farm built a lot of privately built miners with their own chips. I haven't been following the hashrate distribution closely but it looks like the "unknown" share of found blocks is very high right now and I would think a lot of the unknown found blocks are from corporate miners not mining on pools.  

My guess is someone deployed a secret farm so to speak. If so I am hoping bitfury simply killed off old gear and replaced with new gear.  say they dropped 20ph and added 40ph.

and after this 8 to 12 % jump we stay flat.

So we're probably hitting the top at 12%? That is 52323655601....
Let's hope it might be a bit lower... I think that the S6 and the new SP's will make a lot of difference and that home mining won't be a thing anymore after that...

Home mining will be for low power homes. under 10 cents a kwatt.

I hope it goes back to flatter.  My biggest fear is someone has next gen chips and pumping them out.  I am hoping those chips take a few months for everyone to get though.  If a company does have next gen chips I could see them keep putting out quite a bit each week.

What I hope happens at some point btc price plummets sub 100, many miners including farms cant afford to mine, asic demand is significantly lowered, asic companies go bankrupt and diff would start to go down significantly.

Well I think for this next change we can dispense with "It's just variance". The last few could clearly fit there, but the upcoming change is due to an actual increase it total hashrate. We may well look back at the first Quarter of 2015 as "The good times" for the year (I hope not).

Yeah but it is moron to exceed by a lot. By that I mean a one time jump like I describe below for bitfury would be smart for them to do.

The math shows time and time again.  replace your shit gear with better gear and grow somewhat.

So the big bitfury gear was about 6th at 4000 watts.

If they drop in a  10th at 3000 watts.

   on 1 to 1 basis  their 20 MW farm was doing 30ph

so it now does  65ph

they may have powered off a lot   last jump and powered on 50ph. this jump.

look at bottom line  they were spending .67 watts a gh  now they spend .3 watts a gh  the market takes a big 10-15% hit lik it did last fall and it then goes flat for 5 months or so.


At 30ph using 20 MW with 6 cent power a farm makes 50800 a day.

at 65ph using 20 MW with 6 cent power a farm makes 143,688 a day.

So the economic sense of bitfury shutting off the remaining shit they were mining getting that nice little  1.50% drop last time.  

Then being perfectly setup to turn on a ton of gear for an entire 13 days making 90k a day in extra money for 13 days = 1 million plus in 2 weeks  not forgetting the other 50 k so 1.7 million in 12-14 days.

If all of the above is true. diff will go flat.  and bitfury will sell a lot of coins fast.. I am holding money to buy when we drop under 200 a coin.

The reason I could see a company putting in more then normal is being first to next gen.  If company is a month or even two ahead of others it would go a long ways on their ROI.

Currently we don't know how far along companies are on next gen so it's hard to tell a lot.

The way things are going, if they keep going, soon we will only have the ASIC manufacturers mining ... noone else.

or the rush to put in a super farm  filled with 10th 3000 watt gear as fast as possible crashes prices down to 150 or less.

I can see some like bitfury swapping out the old gear and not increasing power use.  But  their hash rate doubles since their new gear uses half the power.

This means only building miners no farm build or psus are needed since they have it with the old gear.

Cuts the build cost a lot.  and in my example above a 50k a day profit would be 145k a day for at least 1 diff jump.

the old gear they had was 6th maybe 3000 of them  so now  3000 new pieces.  just slide the old pcb boards out and slide the new ones in. reuse the heatsink the farm the cooling the psu.  only thing to waste is the old pcb boards.

and maybe they can just solder the new chip in place of the old.

pretty cheap upgrade from 20ph to  30ph.  the second part of the upgrade costs a bit more since they only had 3000 old machine to convert the rest would need all the parts.

What I really hate about this jump is that there is almost no gear available for private miners to get some more hash rate and even out the jump.

Who ever it is is definitely keeping quiet.  I keep hoping someone will make a announcement so we know who it is, but we have not been that lucky.

I am guessing +14%,  my opperation remains proffitable even with a 100% total increase in 4 months, so if it is anything less than that, I am still happy because of ROI. On the other hand, this sucks because we want bitcoin to grow. We are really losing momentum, and early adopters are even losing faith  but I am still sure Bitcoin is the next thing

BTC price sure has not helped seems to keep a few dollars under 250 for most of this difficulty.

In my eyes the big thing is if the difficulty increase keeps on during next difficulty.  If it is some new gear we will see if one week they made a big batch, or if a couple weeks they are still bumping difficulty.

  I am certain a farm was put online or upgraded.  The network is so big now that sales can't drive diff up that easy.

So I'm gonna say - variance :). Bitcoinwisdom charts are diving down. The spike was tall and wide so it's definitely going have an impact on this cycle's difficulty, but I don't think it will be anywhere near 10%.

Well hot streaks can happen.  When I used to play the ponies
 I picked 4  horses in 4 consecutive  races
 everyone paid 22 to 28 bucks  for  a 2 buck bet.

Picking 4 winning 10 to 1 shots  at a race track is not the same as your example above , but I am sure it is difficult to do.

I believe it was an upgrade of a farm and some good luck stacked in on that.

I think upgrades and new installations are happening, just perhaps not 25 PH/s at a time. Difficulty has gone up 20-30% in the last ~6 months, when it used to jump that much in a single cycle in early 2014. So I think we're in a more of a steady growth period if BTC price stays where it is.

Yeah, diff has simply slowed down a lot due to the price being so low, if btc was still $1300 ... diff would most likely be a couple hundred billion by now. IIRC when btc price was its highest AM had announced projections of bringing 2EHASH of hardware online within a year. Which, thankfully never happened. Falling prices curbed them real fast!
Like I always say, mining follows price. So far thats proven nothing but true. Its already happened w/ LTC.

I would love for it to be in the 6's at this point.  The day before some pools did have some insane luck.  Antpool did amazing.

Even the solo ckpool got two blocks in the last couple days, which is wild.

Hopefully we see the difficulty stay down. We jumped from like 380PH to 335PH in the last couple of days as well.

My opinion is variance coupled with Bitmain.

BMT is supposed to start shipping B5 S5's today, right?  It's coincidence that a week before they ship we see a pretty good spike in hashrate, which was relatively short lived.  Also a coincidence that Antpool did really well for a few days, good luck run.  I'm not a huge believer in coincidences.

Could be they were testing the units preparing to ship them, as well as trying to gain a few extra BTC by running the units for a day or two before sending them out the door.

Would only take about 25,000 units to pop up the rate by an extra 30PH, which I would assume is within the realm of possibility.

Now, that being said, if this speculation is true, how will that affect us in the near term?  Obviously if they're shipping out another 30PH or so worth of gear we'll see upwards of a 10% diff adjustment going when it's powered on, if it's meant to be new equipment.  If a good portion of it is to be able to replace and retire older, more inefficient hardware, then the diff adjustment would be a little less and even out to probably 4-7% given a 30-50% replacement rate.

I have a feeling it's mostly the latter, replacing old gear.  I think you might be onto something about that initial spike in relation to the S5 batch, that would explain it.  With summer in the north coming up hopefully difficulty will slow down a bit.

What I wish we knew was who it is.  Companies are quiet so we really nave no idea where the gear is popping up at.

If it is someone replacing with gear we don't know chips they were using.  Would be nice to know if they are new gen or not.

It is most likely upgrading gear. Many of us keep the  power footprint the same to cut cost of the upgrade.

For an example:

3x  s-3's = 1200 watts and 1.5 th on 1 evga 1300 g2

2x  s-5's = 1200 watts and  2.3th on 1 evga 1300 g2

I think a lot of the above has happened.  but that is not enough for this spike.

Say 20ph with some luck.  So 20ph- 7 ph = 13ph  maybe 20ph in big farm upgrades or startups.

Wow this is getting crazy. Big pool unplug miners to drop the % and then plug them back to get more BTC after.

 I say no,but not impossible.

I know a lot of btc addies used by bitmaintech  their btc sales are not that high.  way less  10,000 s-5's more like 4000.

 now they could provide a hidden address to a big farm and they could also sell tons via bank transfer.
 
 So if they did 6000  that way and 4000 via btc it is only 10000 units which = 11.5ph.

 But  I do think they may have working s-6 units they fired them up and back down. which could be 4th a unit x 2000 = 8ph.

Let's wait and see if that hashrate fires back up after the difficulty change.

when the halving comes around a couple of things might happen. Like having btc jump so miners are still useful, btc difficulty drop so that it would be profitable to mine, or many other possibilities.

At first halving there was another expectation ASIC race. First halving happened then price didnt changed too much. After first ASICs came to market , then BTC market price gone crazy from $ 10 to $ 250 (was peak at btce).

But I agree with you. At the next halving there are lots of possibilities. And its really hard to wait enourmous hash increase due to mining saturation and technology limitations.

Btw, I guessed difficulty just too high. I didnt think mining operators made such tricky things.
