1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: *WARNING* "Bitcoin.org/Bitcoin.com" Phishing Scam!!! Possibly originating here on: December 03, 2014, 02:12:47 AM
Note: Just got a reply from Mandrik @blockchain.info - so I guess they're aware of it now. Hopefully this will get fixed and spammers won't be able to send from this domain at the very least.

Who can I contact about this?

Try contacting blockchain.info (I dunno what's the best way, I just tried sending them a msg on reddit).

In order to prevent such phishing scam from @bitcoin.com, blockchain.info would have to set clear DMARC, DKIM and SPF policies on their DNS:

4  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Developer Guide on bitcoin.org: writers/reviewers needed on: October 01, 2014, 05:43:09 PM
I think Bitcoin Core configuration files is OT here, this thread is for developer documentation, not user documentation.

This said, as (repeatedly) stated, no permission is required to update the wiki if it is oudated. If someone wants to do the work of duplicating the content and keeping it up to date on bitcoin.org, all this person have to do is to do all the work and convince other contributors it's a good idea, like any other change.

7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DDoS attack on Bitcoin.org on: September 17, 2014, 06:39:33 PM
Site still down for me, fucking no life aspies.

DNS changes may take up to 24-48 hours before being deployed worldwide.

If you ping bitcoin.org, what IP do you get? ( should be 199.83.129.139 or 199.83.131.8 )
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DDoS attack on Bitcoin.org on: September 17, 2014, 05:30:20 PM
For the record, we've had DDoS attacks on a regular basis recently and migrated to Black Lotus, but apparently this didn't help as the attackers started using UDP-flood attacks over 10gbps, which is too much for Black Lotus. The very long downtime today was far enough so we switched to other DDoS solutions for now. I'll keep monitoring what works best.

Probably just some anti-Foundation skiddie who saw this:
  https://bitcoinfoundation.org/2014/09/bitcoin-org-walk-down-memory-lane/

So you are saying it is not credible that the site is sponsored by the Foundation but claims it is completely independent ... and now people are mad?

The Foundation is welcome to help bitcoin.org.

As for the worry that the Foundation could try to "buy" some control over the website, I was concerned this could happen when we started having recurring costs (server) until we had alternative funding options. So currently, the sponsorship is just a "win-win" for everyone, and the Foundation thus far is only helpful.

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin.org needs more help with translations! on: August 14, 2014, 01:47:31 PM
I just created most of the Dutch translations for the new "Choose your wallet" page in Transifex, but not entirely sure how to continue. Do I request a live preview now to get everything right?

The docs on GitHub suggest that I create a PR, but do I need to fetch the translations from Transifex in my bitcoin.org fork?

Thanks! I have just updated the live preview:
http://bitcoinnl.us.to/nl/kies-uw-portemonnee

However translations aren't fully complete (3% left). They also usually need to be reviewed both by another Dutch speaker and by me, using Google translate to compare translated strings with the original ones to spot disprepancies.

Are you confident that your work is accurate - consistent with translations, typo-free and easy to understand and read for Dutch speakers?

Once translations are complete and reviewed, they can indeed be submitted in a pull request, but I usually take care of this part since I must review and test translations.

Thanks again for your help.

The new "Choose your wallet" page has been published recently and, as always, translations are welcome.

Also good news, bitcoin.org is now translated in 24 languages!

The following translations are outdated and help from new translators is very welcome:

Polish
Chinese (traditional)
Persian
Turkish
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin.org needs more help with translations! on: July 26, 2014, 02:40:10 AM
I am happy to help with German and French but I suspect they will have these languages well covered

I'd say you're welcome if you want to help with German, as I don't know if current translators will be available soon. And otherwise, they'll be able to review your work and it will make their life easier as long as you take time to provide good quality translations.

I am currently translating in French, but reviews are always welcome and appreciated.

The new "Choose your wallet" page has been published!

https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

And volunteers are now welcome to help translating all English strings. Please join and help on Transifex!

I have problem with the line The developers of this wallet publish the source code. I think, it should be changed to The developers of this wallet publish the client side source code, unless blockchain.info publishes the server side.

I've added a mention of the client in the text, good point, thanks!

Moreover, as I can see u r Bitcoin.org maintainer, I would like to know, if the answers under the following question are paid ?

https://bitcoin.org/en/faq#how-does-one-acquire-bitcoins

Do you mean if one of the website is paying for being linked here?

If I understand your question correctly, then the answer is no. Actually you can assume no link on bitcoin.org is (or has been) generating any kind of income so far to my knowledge (except the Foundation sponsorship banner of course, but it's clearly stated).

If you think any link is worth being replaced by another or anything, feel free to open a pull request (preferably only if you believe there's a good reason in doing so, because updating all translations is time consuming).

Regarding BlockChain.info u have stated this...

Quote
The developers of this wallet publish the source code. This means any developer in the world can audit the code. However, you still need to trust developers of this wallet when installing or updating the final software because it was not built deterministically like Bitcoin Core.

But, AFAIK, the complete source code is not open like Bitcoin-QT. Only the client side JS is open. Please check the bottom of https://blockchain.info/wallet/security

Quote
The client side javascript is available at https://github.com/blockchain

We dont know what is happening at the server side !!!

To my understanding, transactions are signed locally by the app, so blockchain.info servers can only be used to get data from the block chain. The "decentralization" score takes care of this part: "This wallet relies on a centralized service by default. This means a third party must be trusted to not hide or simulate payments."

This being said, if someone can prove me wrong and show that any of these centralized servers can do more than just providing block chain data when the open-source client is loaded, I would certainly agree to use the "closed-source" dialog instead.

Its just that its not user friendly!

I would much rather have a shitty design and have it be easy to use, than a good design but harder to use.

FWIW, the old page was considered hard to use / confusing for many reasons according to the comments I have reviewed, naming some:

- Wallets were either duplicated all over the place, or some web wallets were isolated to a single category even though they provide an app.
- People were missing the separation between wallets categories and mixing them all together.
- Some wallets did have their names hidden with a mandatory disclaimer, which many people found confusing.
- Previous layout was filled with texts and I've seen people complaining the page wasn't "palatable" for newcomers as a result.
- The previous layout was very innefficient at allowing people to find an app for their choosen OS (would become a problem in the future).
- Etc..

..So if there's specific issues like these with the new layout, I'm certainly interested to hear them and think of future changes. This page is clearly not one I'd consider easy to improve until it pleases everyone.

Nice but the lack of hardware wallets is really depressing.

AFAIK they are coming soon, I just wanted to reserve them some room for the near future.

Thanks for the feedback, glad to know most of you are liking the result!

GreenAddress / BitGo have been added recently, but not as part as this pull request.
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / New "Choose your wallet" page on bitcoin.org on: July 17, 2014, 03:15:45 AM
A new reworked "Choose your wallet" page has been submitted for review on bitcoin.org .

Live preview: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet (Edit, now merged)

Descriptions for the changes can be found below. Hope you all like the result, more testing, opinions and feedback is always welcome!

--

This new layout is addressing many issues and feedback, with a focus on the following points:

- Providing increased transparency about security and the zero trust model.
(making it a better education material and providing incentives to developers to improve their wallets over time.)

- Easing the selection process for the visitor.
(by simplifying the page and allowing users to filter wallets by platform, with access to clear information and screenshots.)

- Allowing the page to scale with the increasing diversity of wallets.
(by not isolating wallets into single categories anymore and introducting anticipated hardware wallets.)

- Encourage diversity and decentralization.
(by not recommending a single wallet anymore, and by rotating wallets daily by « zero trust levels » - full nodes followed by SPV wallets followed by hybrid & multisig wallets followed by web wallets.)

--

The following points are reviewed for all wallets:

- Private keys
What control the user has over his bitcoins?

- Block chain
How secure and « zero trust » is payment processing?

- Transparency
How transparent and « zero trust » is the source code?

- Environment
How secure is the environment of the wallet?

- Privacy
Does the wallet implement change addresses properly? (for now)

--

Web wallets controling users private keys were previously hidden behind a strong warning.

The new page is displaying the same warnings and a few others from the wallet bubble. Web wallets are sandboxed out of all categories unless they provide control over private keys to the user and a native app that signs transactions locally. Future certification standards could possibly allow web wallets to provide enough transparency to be listed outside of the sandbox in the future.

--

Bitcoin Core previously had a complete paragraph inviting users to adopt full nodes.

The new page instead always displays Bitcoin Core as the first wallet and the reasons why users should choose Bitcoin Core are better outlined by its good zero trust score. Bitcoin Core is also contextually linked from other wallets' disclaimers.

--

This layout has been tested on recent and older versions of CH, FF, OP, IE, SA, Android & iPhone. A few small bugs exist for older browsers, IE6-7 isn't supported for now.
