Damn, that is quite interesting. It looks like you can definitely run Ubuntu, and it looks like Rikomagic has something similar specifically for linux. I will continue researching and then grab a couple of the most promising for testing. Let me know of any others and I will report results for anyone else interested.

Hello everyone HF has given us the ability to release a Python 3 tool that allows you to adjust the voltages of your board.  This is only useful if your going to really want to push them past 900Mhz since at some point you will need to increase the voltages to push the power!

By default the setting we set during programming was .930 voltage.  You can read more about the tool here and please use that thread to ask any related questions.

Cheers!
103  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / HF - Tool to set voltages on: June 05, 2014, 05:11:37 AM
Hey everyone we are able to release a tool that allows you to adjust your voltage settings for your Evo and Habanero boards.

HF has provided us with a python 3 script that we are allowed to distribute.

Basically in a nutshell this is good to use ONLY if your trying to push your boards past 900Mhz because you will need to increase the voltage on the board in order to give the chip more power.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK, please read the LICENSE FILE first before using this tool.

This only works with one miner plugged in at a time!

The hftool.py utility is used to query and manipulate hashfast module settings.

Requirements:
 Python 3.x
 pip for Python 3.x
 Pyusb

Installing pip for python 3 on most unix systems (command for ubuntu below)
 sudo apt-get install python3-pip

hftool requires pyusb. To install it:
 pip3 install --pre pyusb

Put these into a file /etc/udev/rules.d/01-hashfast.rules:

You will need root access to create this file and also when done its recommended you reboot in order for these rules to take effect.

Code:
ATTRS{idVendor}=="297c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0001", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ACTION=="add", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev”, ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1"
ATTRS{idVendor}=="297c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="8001", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ACTION=="add", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev", ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1"
ATTRS{idVendor}=="03eb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2ff6", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ACTION=="add", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev", ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1"

RUNNING

Start the tool by with:
Code:
$ ./hftool.py -h

Read die frequencies and voltages:
Code:
$ ./hftool.py -r

Write die frequencies and settings:
Code:
$ ./hftool.py -w 0:VLT@FRQ,1:VLT@FRQ,2:VLT@FRQ,3:VLT@FRQ

example would be setting all dies to .930 volts at 875Mhz
Code:
$ ./hftool.py -w 0:930@875,1:930@875,2:930@875,3:930@875

You can grab it from Bitbucket Git depo here https://bitbucket.org/gateway69/hf-tool

AND no I dont work for HF, we pushed them to get a tool released so our customers of our Habanero boards could tweak and push their boards.

Order your Habanero from Batch 2 today for $850 here

What program do I open the pepper mining app with on a RPi?

I tried using windows but I only get the spinning wheel.

you need to run your miner with --api-listen --api-network

and if your on the same network then enter the ip of the pi, and default port 4028 (unless you changed that in the cgminer config)

Finally got my 2 units up and running. They blow up at anything faster than 550 mhz... so I need to put some tweaking time in.

did you try the pepper app tool to see what your temps where per die? this helps as a first pass, then of course a decent fan on the cooler is required to really push these suckers..

I don't get you windows people Smiley j/k.. anyhow.. good to see things are up and running! keep that back plate cool or fans blowing air on the board as as well.

Please note my reliable mining controllers are Linux based.   Cool

Just a quick update now that my miners are off the test bench and into a "production" environment.

Nepton 280L - one 140mm stock fan, one 125cfm screamer (Same fan as the S1 runs, except I clipped off the PWM/RPM wires).

These are running at ambient temp of 90F/33C.

A few notes:

My windows XP test bench squelches cores at anything over 90C.  My xubuntu 12.04 hasn't clocked a single squelch in nearly 24 hours.  Same cgminer version.

Someone mentioned above that you can go too tight/uneven on the cooling.  I chipped the corner of one die on my second unit - incidentally I got very lucky, since "Chip" doesn't show any performance detriment.

If anyone is posting their speeds and temps, can you please post the ambient temp as well?  It's hard to make operating comparisons without ambient temps.

These ran stable for 8 hours yesterday 900Mhz(675gh/s) at 100C.  If I can get the ambient temps down (or add another screamer fan), I'm sure I can push farther.  MrTeal, at what clock speed do these trend towards implosion?  Can you recommend an "ideal" operating speed(or temp) for 24/7 hashing?

Awesome boards, congratulations to you and your team for putting out a quality product!

On the one I have with the Nepton 280L with high CFM fans I use the following command line arguments
cgminer.exe --hfa-temp-overheat 103 --hfa-fan 100 --hfa-hash-clock XXX --hfa-noshed --hfa-temp-target 0 --api-network --api-listen
Generally that board is topped out around 950MHz on one of the dies, but it's pretty chip specific.
Hashfast claims the chips can run quite hot (and recently changed the FW on their Evo boards to run them up to 110C, and I've never had an issue with a chip getting damaged due to thermals. The chip itself will shut down at 105C, so I set the limit a little below that so cgminer will lower clocks if it gets too hot.

Also at some point you need more voltage to push the boards.. we programmed them at .93, but you need a tool which we are trying to get HF to allow us to release which allows you to bump up the voltages because at some point Mhz wise the chip needs more power.  You can see this sometimes in the Pepper Mining app when you watch the die temps if every you see small dips randomly (not to be confused with a board clocking it self down or squelching a core).

I don't get you windows people Smiley j/k.. anyhow.. good to see things are up and running! keep that back plate cool or fans blowing air on the board as as well.

Looking forward to see what you can do!  Also note the back-plate can get quite hot and depending on how much you push the board you might need to cool them a bit.

Well, I was thinking about that but I could not find any details about what the backplate looks like (size, placement, etc. for mounting some kind of cooling).

Yes the Raystorm does support the LGA115x spacing.  FYI, on the peppermining.com site the cooling compatibility is listed as "standard 75mm Intel (lga 1366 socket b)" but in any case the Raystorm supports both.

Just put in an order for 2 x Habeneros.  I will be experimenting with a dual pump high pressure custom liquid cooling system that I plan to cram into a 4U case I have (from an old busted Avalon clone).  As soon as I have everything working I will post here with results.  Should be able to get to 700 Gh/s with this per card; maybe a lot more.

Setup:

DPS-2000BB with sidehack's power adapter (and IBM server 2000 watts super efficient supply, extra room for overclocking)
Phobya 5 Bar (about 167 feet water) triple 120mm (50mm thick) G Changer radiator
Delta PFB1212UHE-F00 fans (triple, for radiator) which put out a hurricane force wind of 252 cfm EACH (not for home use, these are 60+ decibal fans)
Koolance RP452X2 reservoir-pump combo with upgraded dual Swiftech 655-B pumps in series (should reach about 4-5 Bar pressure at about 2-4 L/m flow rate)
XSPC RayStorm special copper edition lga 1366 cooling blocks
1/4" ID x 3/8" OD Tygon lab grade tubing

This is my first liquid cooling foray, but I did a lot of research into optimizing for maximum head pressure (using commercially available parts, anyways) and reliability (since this will be in a data center, failure is bad).  The dual pumps double head pressure, and add safety margins as a failure of one pump will not be fatal immediately (the other pump should continue to supply cooling albeit at half the pressure).  Even a single pump on this is improved over the H100i system though.  Once I get everything working, I may add some kind of controller for safety.

If possible, I plan to mount the cards on their edges in parallel using PCB card slots I found on mouser.  I plan to put a rail of some kind across the top of the case and mount a card slot on the top and bottom of the case for each card.  I got a variety of different card slots so I will have to report back which work.  If that fails, I have some other ideas, maybe will use risers and stack the cards but that is not optimal.

At frozencpu, my entire purchase (include tubing, screws of various kinds, and compression connections) was about 1.59 BTC.  Add to that 2.5 BTC for the 2x Habeneros, and I have a 4.09 BTC cost for about 1.4+ Gh/s system (throw in $80 for the power supply and sidehack board).  Not cheap, but about the same price as a Spondoolie SP10 but with the benefit that (1) I can re-use every component (except the Habenero of course) in my next miner project, and (2) I will be able to use an rPi to control/tweak/optimize.

Anyone with great experience in custom liquid cooling that might have suggestions (or especially if there is a major issue in my equipment selection) please feel free to PM or post here!!!!

Looking forward to see what you can do!  Also note the back-plate can get quite hot and depending on how much you push the board you might need to cool them a bit.

Btw, after testing a bunch of h80i's and the h80i clone from coolmaster I have to say my new favorite cooler is the Cool Master Glacer 240L, its a dual radiator system and has a nice big pump for the cooling head.

What are you able to do on the Hab w/ an H80i? ... clocks / temps?

Their are a lot of variables that you need to consider.

OEM H80i from CoolIT with San Ace 120 12v Server fan
875-850Mhz, temps around 100c (depends on ambient temp of the room also, and how well you have the cooling head applied).
Results may very.

Of course since we cant test every combination we would love to hear what you guys are using and see some pictures!

Cheers!

Pepper Mining app is released! Read more about it at https://peppermining.com/pepper-miner-app/

Ill also be hanging out for a bit starting now on the freenode habanero channel.. join ##habanero and maybe I can answer any questions you have.

how can switch what board core temps I see ?

Currently the app only works with one board, its on the long todo list and I wanted to get this out first so you can at least try to start using this to help out.

The old "Redo" is always worth trying. I also noticed after tweaking several cooling heads that this process seems to work best...

1. Hand tighten them all down first.
2. Start hashing at a low clock speed and then tighten as evenly as possible.
3. Crank up the clock speed.
4. Loosen each corner until you verify a move up or down in temp to make sure that certain corners are not too tight.

I noticed that in many cases I needed to loosen certain corners by a turn or two to get even temps across chips. It's a bit like tuning a guitar.

I have to strongly agree with this having taken tested many habaneros and one thing to note is you can get it to tight which then also causes temps to rise.

Take your time and try it a few times but following the rules above should help..

116  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Pepper Mining App on: June 01, 2014, 05:59:34 PM
I just released a early preview version of the Pepper Mining app that works with cgminer and any board using the HF Golden Nonce chip Habanero boards are using.

The idea of this tool really is to help you get proper cooling on your boards since this is one of most important aspects of being able to increase hashing rates.  I have tested several Habaneros over the last week and getting the cooling head aligned isn't an easy task.

Steps:

1.
So what I do is put the cooling head on and tighten it till i start to feel a decent amount of resistance on the screw heads (you will need to play with this to figure out what that is).  Then I launch cgminer at a low hash clock rate such as

Code:
cgminer --hfa-fan 100 --hfa-temp-overheat 110 --hfa-hash-clock 300 --api-listen --api-network

If you applied enough basic pressure this should be running fine, if your getting thermal trips then you do not have enough pressure so find the screw or screws that need a bit more pressure.

2.
If its hashing launch the pepper mining app, and go to the stats graph, this is where you can see how well you did with getting cooling even.

You can see here that asic 1 and 2 are a bit hot or could use some adjustments.  As you can see from left to right they are running a bit higher than the others, and from this screen shot mid way on the right you can see I did a small quarter turn of the screw for asic 2 and the temp dropped down.

This is just an example of how to use the app, once you have properly aligned or gotten them as close together as you can, you can start bumping up the hash clock frequency in cgminer to see what you can run stable.

Pic of the board with the die locations:

One thing is for sure if you want to push your boards stock fans that come with the coolers do not cut it, you need a decent server style fan to push a lot of air though the radiator.  I use San Ace 120 12v server style fans and by using these I can see anywhere from 5-10C drop in temps across the board allowing me to push boards anywhere from 850-900+

Read more about this app here and the download links.

Board with a bit of info on it..

LEDs are grouped into four main categories. Beside each PCIe power input there's an LED which indicates whether there is voltage present on those plugs. On the right hand side of the board (away from USB) there is another LED by the 7V (actually 6.8V) power supply and test point that indicates that voltage rail is working. On the side of the board with the USB, there is one more LED by the 3.3V power supply and test point that indicates that the 3.3V rail is powered up.

Lastly, there is a row of 8 LEDs that are general indicators. Right now the top four light up when the board is on and running, and the bottom four will light up when the low voltage power supplies have been requested to be turned on. We'll probably fold more debugging information into those going forward, once we finalize all the information that we want to display.

Is there any step by step guide planed ?

I believe yours are on the way if I guess your name vs your nick here Wink

I think one board is suffering from DA.

Dumb Ass customer !

No more errors, both hashing now.

I'm sure I need to do dome tweaking to tune them into full capacity.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Its good to hear! I should be releasing our tool that shows you each die temp and hopefully will help anyone to provide the proper pressure on each screw for the cooling head.  Also I do personally recommend to use later versions of cgminer because they have commands and lots of fixes that have been fine tuned for HF devices which includes the Habanero over the last few months, and esp being able to set the clock speed, and fix any of the reset errors that happen.
