Worst kept secret in bitcoin. lol

But what if the core group of developers were Tom Williams, and they used Bruce Wagner as the rube for the marketing arm?

Although I was raised in a Dutch community in Indiana and took Spanish in high school, I don't think I would be up to this task. You could ask Psytoshi if he knows anybody.
10343  Other / Off-topic / Re: Satoshi Nakamoto is the core group of developers on: March 18, 2013, 03:50:06 PM
Interesting!

I wonder if there's an example of some product or service that came into vogue, and later finding out that its roots were not as what was originally presented, maybe with the marketing arm being behind the entire thing from the get-go.

A little mystery goes a long way.

A lot of mystery goes a lot further.

Sir, At least Duke Nukem Forever shipped...ten years later.

Who knows if BFL ever will.

I feel you have soiled the Good name of the Duke. The resemblance is only in passing.

Holy...shit.....

That is genius! It can mean anything:

From your getting hassled to potentially hustled...all the way up to "your lying to me" all the time...all wrapped up in one word.

You ought to sell that on a T-Shit to BFL customers. As well as submit it to the slang dictionary.

10348  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I went to Meze Grill today and paid with VISA on: March 18, 2013, 03:12:29 AM
Shouldn't have given up on bitcoin!  If they had simply held onto the bitcoin they earned for meals, could have possibly kept them in business.  Don't convert your bitcoin back to fiat!  HOLD

just imagine if the Meze Grill owner had saved all the BTC paid to him since day 1 of opening his doors to Bitcoin.  he might have been able to retire by now.

I don't think you can retire on 17 BTC.

Meze Grills' Bitcoin account (the one they had as "a QR code on a big laminated card":
http://blockexplorer.com/address/1MTbKpYWnzqmsLvCjdTtwrvuX81g3HCgC

Looking at that address on BlockChain, I'm thinking that the majority of it came from Bruce and Ed, and that one meal for the two NPR guys who got their coins from MyBitcoin. http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=137795648&m=137803856

Upon revisiting the podcast, something struck me as odd. Jacob and David are instructed by Bruce to go over to the two computers. Bruce sits at one, while Jacob and David are instructed to bring up MyBitcoin (mybitcoin.com). When they do, they learn that the last person setting there forgot to log out, and notice a $400K+ USD account. Bruce said it wasn't his, that it belonged to the guy who sat their last. Later that day is when MyBitcoin was hacked.

Here's my question. How many of you reading this would forget to log out on a computer that belonged to somebody else, given that if you didn't, you may loose everything you have in some financial institute account? For that matter, even if you never forget to log out, who in their right mind would view their personal financial records on somebody else's computer?

Even before Bitcoin, we all knew how foolish such an act would be, hence learning to never do it. I'm curious on how much Meze Grill entrusted Bruce with, perhaps to invest in Bitcoin.

Is there an official New York government website one could go to and search pending litigation? I have a hunch (rhymes with lunch).

Just thought I'll share with you what Bitcoin 100 would expect if you accepted our offer.

Source:  http://bitcointhedocumentary.org/wordpress/?page_id=32

PRIORITY AD SPACE ON SITE: Just one clickable link would suffice.

OWN LOGO ON FRONT PAGE: Not important, but may take you up on the offer.

HALL OF FAME: Not sure what this curtails, but probably won't need it.

THANK-YOU DVD & FULL MOVIE: We'll pass on this, opting to pay for it.

LOGO IN DVD-BOOKLET: Might be interested in this, but no big deal.

MENTION IN CREDITS: Text only will be fine.

SPECIAL THANKS IN CREDITS: Again, text only will be fine.

MENTION BY DIRECTOR IN EVERY INTERVIEW: Only if you wish, but won't be offended if you don't, even if it's the majority of the time.

You can even leave us out of the contest, thus distributing prizes to any of the other donators. I'm not sure if this was ever a concern on your part while thinking about accepting our challenge.

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm the only one offering to donate $10K-$20K USD through Bitcoin 100, in essence surpassing your initial goal of $13K USD.

Once you say the word GO, I'll even start and man a thread to help you reach the ten non-profits goal within 90 days max.

Forget about in-person transactions. That can come later when we have a stronger network of users.

No, DON'T forget about in-person transactions.

The mistake many businesses make when starting to accept Bitcoin is that they expect an increase in turnover quickly. I have seen merchants jump off after 8 weeks because they only got a few extra customers in that time and thought it therefore wasn't worth the effort. But it doesn't work that way.

It does take time but after accepting Bitcoin since sometime in 2011 in our restaurant in Berlin (ROOM77) we can absolutely and definately say that not only has it brought us a lot of media attention but it is actually driving business to our place.

I don't only mean the monthly Berliner Bitcoin-meetups held at our place (we give out too many Pamperos on these evenings to make money on them anyhow Wink). We get reservations from all over the world from people comming to Berlin who know exactly where they want to go for dinner without consulting any restaurant guide and even dragging their local friends to ROOM77 because they want to pay in Bitcoin. I know for a fact that no other bar/restaurant in Berlin of our size and profile is getting that kind of business and this is increasing steadily.

So accepting Bitcoin DOES drive customers to your brick'n'mortar business and if you offer a positive customer-experience you can even turn their non-Bitcoiner friends into regular customers and very often into new Bitcoin-users as well Wink.

Besides, a much better competitor already has us beaten there: cash.

That is not true either. Anyone comming from out of the Euro-zone to Berlin has clear advantages when paying in Bitcoin over having his credit card charged in a foreign currency or changing cash at Western Union. Just do the math.

Joe

Sounds to me like your place would be a perfect candidate for placement of one of those new Bitcoin ATM machines.

I assume you're still mullin' over my ~$10,000 USD donation offer.

Don't make me sweeten the offer, for I can do that also.

<thinking out loud> What if I got 5-10 venerable bitcoiners who own viable sites to pledge $500 each each provided you accomplish the task I laid out in X days?

That's another potential $5,000 USD, maybe more.

I'm doing the best I can to help fund this endeavor of yours, short of writing the damn check myself.

<still thinking out loud> Tentative example: If Team Bitcoin Documentary got 10 NPO/NGOs to embed Bitcoin Accepted Here buttons onto their respective websites, and no less than 10 venerable Bitcoin entities pledge $500 each if task is completed, then The Bitcoin Foundation will donated $1,000 USD, provided said criteria was met.

Guys, I'm doin' the best I can to get $20,000 USD in your hands ASAP to help bring this project to fruition.

I'm pretty sure this would be the first documentary ever funded mainly via the giving away of money opposed to the beggin' for donations method.

Currently, Bitcoin 100 has $20,000+ USD in our coffer, and over half of it can becomes yours.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNLSvd4LyP8

I once heard a wise man say: Don't talk too much about something you don't know too much about. So if we talk about bitcoin, I can say a lot, but if we talk about a car engine, I keep my mouth fucking shut.

The problem isnt about an idiot couldnt keep his mouth shut.

Its the general public (his followers) whos lazy to do their own research and just take what he said as facts.

It happens everywhere in the world and hence it creates this "cult". Social media is great but its also terrible to public when stupid spreading crap everywhere.

I used to set up at the Lakewood Flea Market in Atlanta next to this guy who became an instant expect on everything once some mundane fact was brought to his attention.

During one show, I thought I would have a little fun at his expense knowing that I would get three days of entertainment value from it, considering he was within earshot of my booth.

He would always bark at the customers if they so much as look at a piece in his booth longer than two seconds.

On day one, he placed toward the front of his booth a handsome Art Deco piece, but priced way too high. I walked up to the piece, picked it up, then studied it, and was surprised he didn't bark at me as he would always do, no matter who the person was. He just watched me. I then asked of him if he knew what he had here. He stood still like a mountain waiting for me to tell him. So I did.

Paraphrased, I said, "What you have here is an Eastlake vase, probably one only about 30,000 produced by the famous Thomas Eastlake, making it a limited edition. You're price looks pretty good, but I would have to double check the price on the internet later."

He immediately said, "I know! I know! I haven't changed the ticket yet. That's the price I paid for it." Amazingly, the guy he brought it from used the same tickets and penning style as his to price the item.

He took the item from me, removing the tag, then placed a new tag on it that was exactly the same kind, and increased the price three fold. I couldn't wait for the fun to start.

Sure enough, within 30 minutes a well-dressed woman walked up to the vase, which now sat on a table by its lonesome at the very front of the booth. She was just approaching it when he barked out virtually all I just told him earlier. She looked at the tag, then turned and walked away. Since she was facing my direction, I saw her roll her eyes.

As she was clearly leaving his booth, he continued to bark at her, even lowering his price, and asking her to make an offer. During the course of the show, I did overhear two people dispute his Eastlake claim, correcting him that it's an Art Deco vase. He didn't want to hear that, for he knew the truth. Besides, he told one them, it's a limited edition. Only 20,000 made, purposely knowing it was a lie, for in his mind the truth was 30K.

Needless to say, at the end of the show he still had it, and even asked me if I wanted to buy at a lower price than the original one. I told him I couldn't because I had a bad show, even though things flew out of my booth and he could clearly see that I had considerably a lot less inventory than when I sat up.

Sorry for the somewhat aside, but this post, and a post above it a tad, somehow reminded me of this story.

And seriously, the order management system still isn't up and running properly - what the hell does Jody get paid for?

I don't get that either! Just imagine BFL would have shipped back in October 2012 as they initially promised. Can you imagine the chaos?

People that ordered Jalapenos getting Mini Rigs - and vice versa. Their order system is a mess. I just checked today - my order is still not correct.

I still remember one of Jody's updates where she said BFL might skip Christmas holidays because they will be busy assembling our miners. Playing on people's pity. Funny. Not!

As it turned out all bullshit.

Besides playing Minecraft and trolling their own forums: What does BFL staff actually do all day? One could expect that at least their infrastructure would be set up and running by now. Yet nothing has happened.

Butt full of FLies: Incompetence. Inability. Dishonesty.

I like IW, but something has changed recently and I can't put my finger on it.

[...]

~Bruno K~

PS: To be clear, the wallet address is 1JppeHVdYQEBGR4uHVTqLQsb2FY1wUTziH

Dear Bruno,

Instawallet has always worked like a shared wallet, nothing has ever changed in this respect.

The fact you used to see coins remain at the deposit address simply means that :
 - there used to be less coin turnover,
 - the cold storage was less used,
 - any combination of the previous reasons.

Some stuff does change though, you used to get your transaction ID back immediately when sending coins, that's not the case anymore, sends are now asynchronously handled by a background worker. That's much more secure in terms of potential race conditions, much more robust in terms of infrastructure, much more maintenable (since now I can simply stop the worker, do some work on bitcoind and switch it back on).

The traffic also increases a lot, to give you an idea, our average weekly turnover is around 10kBTC in, and 10kBTC out, it recently peaked at around 50kBTC/week.

Your wallet has exactly the amount you expect to be available, you can't rely on blockchain.info to tell you how much is available in an account on a shared wallet.

This is how your balance is calculated :

Hope it's clearer Smiley

That's a fine explanation I can live with. Thanks, bud.

10360  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitcoinica liquidator wants to hear from users on: March 17, 2013, 07:41:22 AM
Let me see if I have this correct. The liquidated funds are now worth more now than when they were first stored at Mt. Gox, and the the owner of Mt. Gox is a member of TBF.

The funds were stored at Mt. Gox in good faith, yet...

From this day forward, I demand from Mt. Gox prove that these funds have not been touched.

Is there any way an audit can be done in regard to this situation? I'm not versed in how this can be accomplished, but I'm sure others here have an idea.

The way I'm looking at it is that if all the funds were released today, everybody would get back about what they lost, and maybe more.

We have no proof that Mt. Gox is not using said funds, so until that proof is given, I'm going on record and stating that they are floating (or whatever the proper term is) the funds for their everyday operation.

Please forgive me, all and MG, for I don't have the red-ass toward them, but I am sticking it up their ass on this one issue alone.
