Great News For Bitcoin! Lightening Network First Payment Was Successful!

Payment Provider Bitrefill Runs Successful Lightning Transaction Test

Faster and cheaper bitcoin transactions may soon go alive.

A recent transaction posted on Twitter from inside the offices of prepaid phone payment provider, Bitrefill, used the Lightning network to top up a mobile (for real) at near instant speed with zero fee, as the Tweet touted.

While such transaction is not yet generally available to the public and may still be largely limited to command line interfaces, it nonetheless gives a peek into how the future may look like for regular bitcoin users.

— Alex Bosworth (@alexbosworth) December 28, 2017

Lightning has been one of the most watched bitcoin-scaling solutions. It's a new layer of abstraction atop the bitcoin protocol that allows transactions to occur more quickly and cheaply, without sacrificing the security. According to data site Bitinfocharts, currently the average transaction fee of bitcoin is at $36.

Yet, people who saw Bosworth's tweet may have been confused because the use case isn't visible to Bitrefill customers. According to CEO Sergej Kotliar, the transaction shown occurred when Bosworth was testing out Bitrefill's implementation with one of the company's developers, by invitation. Bosworth needed to refill his phone at the time anyway, so he decided to test it with real money. It worked.

Kotliar said:

"Everything is ready to go on our end, but we're not launching it yet until a Lightning wallet is released for general use on mainnet."

Wallets need to be updated in order to interact with the Lightning protocol layer, and this has not generally happened yet, Kotliar explained.

Bitrefill announced it was implementing Lightning in August, on its blog. Interested users and developers are able to test it now, with fake bitcoin.

Based in Stockholm, Bitrefill primarily focused on enabling people to pay for prepaid phones with cryptocurrency. "Our high-level company vision is to enable people all over the world to use bitcoin as money. Practically we enable people to use their coins to buy everything that is digital and money-like, so pay their bills, refill their phones, vouchers, etc," its CEO told CoinDesk in an email.

Noting that production implementations of new innovations often surface tricky problems, the small team at Bitrefill decided one way it could contribute to bitcoin was to move quickly to adopt Lightning, but doing so also helped it to address frequent concerns voiced by its consumers around transaction costs and delays.

"Recent mempool overloads have affected us hard, but over time a bigger concern for us has been confirmation times," Kotliar wrote. "Here the instant transactions of lightning lets us make a truly great customer experience. Lightning solves not only confirmation times but also many other UX problems of bitcoin."

Kotliar urged peer companies not to wait to implement Lightning. He wrote:

"Integration with Lightning has been surprisingly easy. It runs in a way similar to how bitcoin works, and fits neatly with how our and many company wallets work already."

1122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fear of bitcoin on: January 02, 2018, 10:29:57 PM
Why are some governments so keen to prove that bitcoin is dangerous. Recently, the Indian government sent notifications to the citizens that they should not invest in bitcoin.
Governments and banks see bitcoin as a strong competition and yes, they are damned right about that. thus, they can do anything possible to stop people from investing into bitcoin. Governments/Banks hate bitcoin because bitcoin puts people in control of their money/asset with huge profit if saved for long-term, bitcoin is fast, secure and fully decentralized. Bitcoin market is open 24/7 while banks online open 5 days a week and 9-5 daily. Bitcoin will definitely hurt them that is why they are sending all these negative messages about bitcoin.
1123  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin Rise again in January? on: January 02, 2018, 10:21:54 PM
In my opinion bitcoin will rise up to $22000.
Why not? Bitcoin price has already started growing today the January 2nd, 2018. Bitcoin gains about 13% increase in value growing from $13,000+ reaching up to $15,000. That is a good sign showing bitcoin is getting out of the correction period. For me, i think bitcoin will finish this month selling at $18,000. And if the Lightening Network is implemented this month the price may get even higher up to $20,000.

1125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's your biggest regret about bitcoin on: January 02, 2018, 09:58:27 PM
Selling most of my bitcoins when the value was about 150$  Angry
Selling my bitcoin in June/July 2017 when bitcoin was selling at $1,500 and invested the money in to the property investment. Sad
1126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why media against bitcoin ? on: January 02, 2018, 09:51:16 PM
when ever I found any news about bitcoin it is negative news , i am confused why traditional mass media always against bitcoin ?
Bitcoin is still a new technology and about 80% of the modern technologies has suffered from media criticism e.g. Tesla Motors - the recent one. Today's media is full of bias and bullsh*t that is why Donald Trump always regard them as "Fake News". Today's media is all about blackmail and creating unreal stories to confuse the public that is why i don't really read many papers nowadays as i was used to do.
1127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Am i late to buy bitcoin now ?? on: January 02, 2018, 09:29:36 PM
Hello there one year ago i bought 3 bitcoins but lost them all in gambling... :'(nd now seeing the bitcoin price makes me cryy...
I have 1500USD right now...i am thinking to buy the bitcoin now whatever i can get with them
Should i buy now or not as bitcoin is reached its all time high and in to the moon...please advice me
No, it is never too late to invest in bitcoin. you can invent in bitcoin now for the future. The only issue is people want to make huge profit over night which is not like that. You should at invest for at least a year in order to make more profit. Very few lucky few lucky people invested in bitcoin and doubled their money in the same month. So, when you are investing, plan for the long-term investment. good luck.
1128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin address scam lookup! on: January 02, 2018, 08:55:51 PM
While browsing through the local craigslist ads, I realized there might be a need for a centralized database where people could report addresses that are involved in or associated with scams.

Is there such a thing already???
If not, I really think there is a market for such a service.

Let's say you are being presented with ridiculous offers that not only sound too good to be true but are also shady as f**k.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to look that address up into a registry where other people have previously reported scams???

Not sure how feasible this would turn out to be, considering the amount of addresses generated every second... BUT... I don't think it could hurt either...
Most scammers are probably lazy and wouldn't think of switching addresses until such a service would become popular and/or adopted by bigger players (e.g exchanges)

That could really help a lot of gullible people who otherwise would fall prey to such scams.
I would personally use such a service if there was one

Let me know what you think...
That's basically useless because a scammer can create hundreds of bitcoin addresses in few minutes and renew them everyday.
1129  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-1-1]Bitcoin's gender divide could be a bad sign, experts say on: January 02, 2018, 08:40:36 PM
Of course things are bubbly and of course men are more attracted to tech and suicidal risk. I don't really know why this fella was paid to tell us this.

Lovely ladies will arrive in time when it's calmed down. In the meantime they'll enjoy thinking about kittens and keeping a nice house.
I don't see anything wrong with the stats because some games belongs to the boys! Girls are not made to handle heavy pressure or involve in taking huge risk like Cryptos. One thing i noticed about girls, they don't really like anything that involved in taking risk at all because they are always scared of losing unlike boys. Girls are afraid of putting themselves in to an awkward situation while we boys are the trouble makers - we can get in to anything if we can make money regardless of how risky it is. Cool
1130  Economy / Speculation / Re: NO ONE CAN STOP BITCOIN IN LONG TERM. on: January 02, 2018, 05:00:58 PM
Investing money in bitcoin for long term is a very good investment strategy. Imagine the people who invested in bitcoin 3-5 years ago. Do you know how much they make from their bitcoin investments over the year? That must be some staggering amount of money, i guess.
1131  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price is going down. on: January 02, 2018, 04:56:32 PM
The bitcoin price went down for about two weeks and now is about to shoot itself to the sky again. The price was down for weeks due to the recent market correction but it appears the price has started recovering because it gains about 8% increase in value.
1132  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC 70k end of 2018. on: January 02, 2018, 04:50:46 PM
BTC will go up 20.000$ in 1 month.
Price will be 70 k end of 2018.
No way, bitcoin price can never grow to reach $20,000 in a month, it may take some time i guess. And we are expecting to see the bitcoin price grow to reach anywhere between $50k to $60 by the end of this year 2018.
1133  Economy / Speculation / Re: THIS is the time to buy! on: January 02, 2018, 04:46:53 PM
Yes, now is definitely the time to buy bitcoin because the price started shooting to the month. I don't think the bitcoin will ever drop to $10k, the only level where it can be is between $12k - $13k and that level too is about to be history my friends.
1134  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is bitcoin price so high? on: January 02, 2018, 04:36:25 PM
Bitcoin price has stratospherically risen leaving minor players with massive gains and bigger players millionaires. Is this a bubble? Are the gains real?
The bitcoin price is down for about two weeks because of the market correction, but it appears the price started recovering good for now, because the bitcoin price gains about 8% increase in value today. so, if you want to invest in bitcoin, now is definitely the time before the price skyrockets again.
1135  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is rising again... on: January 02, 2018, 04:30:55 PM
Dear All newbies,,,
Bitcoin is running up again. Buy now! this is the change for you to make money.
Indeed, it appears bitcoin price is going up more especially today, the bitcoin price gains about 8% increase in value today! that is a good sign, bitcoin is getting out of the correction. You guys should definitely invest now before it gets high again.
1136  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price will be $100,000 by 2018 on: January 02, 2018, 03:55:56 PM
Another prediction, the guys without the technical knowledge or proper understanding of bitcoin and bitcoin network are the ones making such predictions, by only looking at the previous bitcoin growth chart. It is every funny, actually! We shall see about that, then. Smiley
1137  Economy / Speculation / Re: Too Many Gloom & Doomers! on: January 02, 2018, 03:49:18 PM
Fees have killed it and unless the developers deal the the mining monopoly then
the "Gloom & Doomers" are well founded and now could well be a good time
to place a stop-loss unless you like walking home instead of taking a taxi

Too many gambling addicts here if you ask me

Haha, welcome to the party.

A stop loss would have been appropriate two weeks ago. We've fallen 40% or so off the high...the loss has already passed you!

This isn't new for Bitcoin, we've seen 80% crashes before. Everyone in the media has been expecting "the bubble to pop" and it has now that the price has gone from nearly $20k to $12-13k. So, what's the surprise? Bitcoin will sit at this level while we all wait to see how the Lightning Network implementation pans out.
So let's hope for the Lightning Network to work because without an update to speed up the bitcoin transaction speed and lower the transaction fee, the bitcoiners are going to be sitting ducks because in time everyone will be leaving bitcoin by calling it an outdated coin.

Why 1 Bitcoin Can Be Worth $100,000 In A Few Years
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7o5m-dFf7s
Yeah, that's a bitcoin price prediction. there are tons of bitcoin price prediction out there. Everybody is a bitcoin prophet nowadays, everybody can predict the bitcoin price that he desires with date and some even time Smiley No jokes, without the bitcoin current transaction issues the value can be very vibrant all the time, but due to such issues many are moving to other altcoins looking for solution.
1139  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin going up on: January 02, 2018, 03:34:43 PM
Hey guys,
Will bitcoin go up even more than what it is now?
Since its going up, does that mean people are buying more or selling more?
Thanks
Yeah, whenever you witness the bitcoin price is going up that means people are buying more bitcoins and holding more not selling more. and when you see the price going down that means many people are selling and not many people are holding bitcoins. One thing to keep in mind is the market correction, whenever the bitcoin price sets the new all-time high record in value by the reaching the apex level, the correction will come in to balanced the market price.
1140  Economy / Speculation / Re: Has the Tide Shifted? on: January 02, 2018, 03:27:19 PM
It's always been said "Never short Bitcoins"

That's been the lingo up until now and it holds true. People shorting Bitcoins often got hurt.

However will the tide shift now? It seems like Bitcoin will form a pyramid shape with $20,000 being it's apex.

Will there be a new lingo of "Never go long on Bitcoins"?

A big sign of Bitcon's demise: Bulltards making many reverse FUD threads with multiple accounts.

That last statement made me chuckle. It's really funny how those forum spammers think they'll change the general population's outlook on bitcoin. They don't seem to know that what the public thinks of bitcoin is simply the news that's published and announced for the average Joes.

I don't think it's soon enough to say whether or not Bitcoin will have another rally. It seems like we've been in this limbo period of 13000-15000 for a while now, and there are small gains here and there as well as no huge losses. For now, I doubt we can predict that far into the future.
we have been at the 300-600 $ range for the last 3+ years - that was a while  Wink
It is funny how speculations and FUDs are changing the face of cryptocurrency universe. I think 2017 has shown us lots of things to learn from, and to master the atmospheric storms in the market for the future. Cool
