I did buy the powered variety, unpowered ribbon risers are known to catch fire.
I had two rigs R9 270x + 7850 running 24/7 for 6 months with unpowered ribbon risers. None caught fire

There were some comments about running dual power supplies on 1 rig. I didn't see a proper explanation and someone said they thought it was the problem with their rig so let me explain.
You can run the second PSU a couple of ways.
Option 1: Use a dual PSU cable that connects both PSUs to the motherboard. It is designed for dual PSU configurations. The cable runs connects the second PSU to the same ground so if you shutdown the power on the rig it properly shuts down the power on the second PSU.
Option 2: Ground short plug The plug goes into the slot where you'd normally connect your PSU to the motherboard. It completes the ground circuit so the PSU will turn on. However it stays on and never turns off unless you use the switch on the back of the PSU or you shut down the power via surge protector or whatever. My EVGA G2 Gold came with the plug. I didn't have to buy one and I didn't have to try and make my own.
The problem comes in when people don't connect the second PSU properly. They don't have the right cable or the plug. They try and cross the wires to the MOBO or do other weird things to get the second PSU to work. As long as you don't do that you should be fine.
I could find photos if people need a better explanation.
I have a couple of these from the old days when I was a BTC miner http://bitcoinware.net/products/antminer-jumper-switch-for-psu

For your 1x slot, you can only use your top option. For 16x PCI-E slot, you can use either 1. They will both work but I prefer the USB cable version Thanks! Already ordered 12 of those. Just to start...

Using TWO PSUs on the same system is the issue IMO.
I don't think so. It was never an issue with older cards and I have excess power. no, if you connect it properly...
Trimegistus did you check it with another miner?
Like I said before, the rig won't even boot. I'm going to purchase some decent powered risers, I'm now convinced it's a power issue derived from the fact that the 480s are sucking a lot of watts from the PCi-e bus.

Guys, I'm having a hard time getting my new rig to boot MOBO: Asrock H81 Pro BTC GPU: 6 x Rx 480 Sapphire Nitro 4Gb PSU: 2 x Corsair 850 W OS: Win10 x64 I have two molex connectors powering the mobo with extra juice and I'm not using powered risers. Everything was running great with the previous video cards (R9 270) but now I can only get the mobo to boot with 3 video cards, and one has to be directly connected to the 16x PCIe. Isn't it strange? I have extra power available and besides, the old video cards were consuming more power than these new ones. Any ideas? Change UEFI settings? Anyone messing with the Gen1/Gen2 setting? Anything else? I have another 6x480s coming soon! Any help will be greatly appreciated Thank! C'mon guys, a lot of you are using the 480 + H81 BTC Pro. How do you manage to use 6 x 480 on this motherboard? use powered risers for more than 2 cards Do you mean I need to use powered risers when using more than 2 cards? Humm... I've seen a lot of people complaining about the use of powered risers claiming they cause instability problems. I have a few 1x to 16x powered risers and I'll give it a try. Fingers crossed

Strange - so you dont need apply a mod for 6 GPUs. It was an issue with my cards (Win 7) and I solved it with mod No idea then Yes, I used that mod too. But my problem is definitely hardware related because the rig won't finish to POST and therefore won't load the OS... Damn, I was so happy! Now I'm just frustrated Right now, 3 GPUs are happily mining... And the other 3 are just waiting for a solution. I have the same problem, what brands are the 480? Sapphire Nitro 4 Gb

I have got around 1000 Novacoins in stacks of 20-100 Novacoins and stake a block once every few days.
Really? My blocks are bigger and they take a long time to stake! What wallet version are you using?

Someone can answer why on my PC(1070 372.54,win 10 AU) does't work option -tt 34 -tstop 45\-45(GPU just does't turn off and miner does't close)!
I don't know what you are trying to do, but with that command (-tstop 45) you are telling the miner to stop mining at 45 ºC... that is a bit crazy because that is the temperature of my cards when they not mining! Got it? Any working card will have to reach temps above 70 ºC! So, I would suggest that you try to use something like -tt 75, -tstop 80 That will work!

anyone can help me, where the wrong setting? i want to mining at siacoin only my setting setx GPU_FORCE_64BIT_PTR 0 setx GPU_MAX_HEAP_SIZE 100 setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1 setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100 setx GPU_SINGLE_ALLOC_PERCENT 100 setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100 timeout /t 3 EthDcrMiner64.exe -dpool stratum+tcp://sia.suprnova.cc:7777 -dwal lionmining.lionworker -dpsw lionmining -dcoin sia
i get blank screen just like pop up and close the cmd box. I don't know exactly why, but I think that's not possible. SIA can only be mined as a second coin, meaning you'll always have to mine ETH, ETC or one of the other coins that use the dagger-hashimoto algo as a primary coin. Right?

One I could think of if miner keeps or reapplies the settings at restart after a crash/hang vs wattman where you need to manually redo the settings.
Good point! I never consider that because my rigs are very stable

For example, there is no WattMan in Linux.
Ok, but what about in Windows? Are there any advantages?

v6.2:
- released version for Linux with nvidia support. - fixed Ethereum solo mining mode. - added "-cvddc" and "-mvddc" options for adjusting voltages for latest AMD 4xx cards. - now you can turn on/off cards in runtime with "0"..."9" keys. - bug fixes.
Are there any significant advantages in using the miner to over/underclock instead of letting WattMan take care of that? Am I missing something here?
