Haha, poor Wes at Virtex.

He made a standard reply for Nxt swarm Cheesy

Hello,

We are looking into adding Nxt. Thanks for the note.

James, how about we explore non-legal recourses first? I've suggested proof of prior art and reputation damage, any other ideas? Maybe steganography for art/video assets?
Maybe we just follow the cryptocurrency style. Open source. Free to use. For everyone!
Usage is fine. Stealing outright is not.
Things like clients should be open source and free to use for everyone. Things like web services shouldn't be open source.. Look at all the BTC and LTC clones. Everyone uses the same client/wallet. And it wasn't created by satoshi. Did it harm BTC or LTC? No..

+1. No matter what we we do, we should avoid to make Nxt a corporation. There is no Nxt entity, only open source individual's works and contribution. Between corporation and theft, I rather choose theft.
I certainly never advocated a corporation???
Just trying to prevent thieves

Seems like there are clever non-legal solutions. Maybe a non-legal non-binding statement a developer can put into the software? That way the spirit can be preserved without going all legal.

James

Also, the idea is to protect the software from mis-use. If someone comes up with a terrific way of using it and improving on it, surely that's all in the game?

One of the biggest drawbacks of copyright at it's most restrictive is that things can't even be improved.

I've seen many people on here who actually welcome people working with their code if it actually makes it better. That's one of the things that is so appealing about this project. Smiley

True. A lot of people here have just silly speech, but no action. We need to stop talkin and get movin Cheesy

Btw many people are willing to pay for conferences themselves too, but let's also invite skilled people who cannot afford it

I'll pay my entry into the Amsterdamn one myself.

Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree?
Seems like it could be a slippery slope....

OK, how about a license that prohibits just FC from doing anything with our stuff Smiley

You will hurt NXT more by fighting with people like FC.

And by breaking open-source spirit you will turn away many potential developers.

Don't make us look like dicks.
OK, message received and understood.
No change in licensing
status quo it is

Hey James,

Not status quo. The idea is valid, but in the proposed form it would just raise Hell in this neck of the woods.
If we can find a smart and different way of protecting our work, that would be great.

Just heard back from nexern!

He's working hard on the client and will send technical details and some screens around monday.

I have asked him to allow us a day at that time to get the news that it is coming on all sites that we can publish on.

So, prepare your pages Smiley
1186  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 30, 2014, 08:13:12 PM
Copyright is automatic at the time of creation. You just need to be able to prove you made the first copy. That's how it works in creative works.

Timestamping will solve this. We could even put up a bounty for novel ways of doing this if there's a need.

In poor artist land we would just snailmail manuscripts to ourselves.
Easiest way to do it years back.

Or we would go to the tax office to get an official stamp from them with a date on it.

Ah, the days of yesterday... *cue melancholic music*
1187  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 30, 2014, 08:07:33 PM
I am not a lawyer. Need a lawyer to figure out how to make it so we can prevent klones that blatantly ripoff NXT community's hard work.
For graphics, text we write, etc., it should be easy to put copyright and that automatically limits theft.

Something wrong with all these discussions about licences. This is a world of cryptoanarchy.
So you think is OK for FC to copy paste and then rip people off?
I want to prevent that. it is bad for NXT to be associated with ripoff artists

I won't talk about pictures and videos, I don't know how to protected them. But Nxt code is protected against frictionlesscoins. Right now if FC launched his coin based on current 0.5.11 binary, I would be able to kill this coin within 24 hours using a small java program and my notebook. This is how protection works in cryptoworld.

Makes sense. Then we just need to put copyright notices on all artwork, text, etc. That automatically provides legal protection from theft. I just want there to be a non-technical deterrent from thieves. As NXT gets bigger and bigger, it can't help but overlap the real world more and more.

Knowing identity of carlos allows credible legal threat to stop his nonsense. He doesn't care about actually running a coin, so your protection doesn't work. People will still get scammed and then might blame NXT.

James

Copyright is automatic at the time of creation. You just need to be able to prove you made the first copy. That's how it works in creative works.
Also, it depends on the artist/creator what to do with it. Maybe they wánt CC.

Not trying to put a downer on it, but in this niche (crypto), adding a (c) to things would probably be very much anti-marketing. I would be very hesitant to do it at this point.

If someone like FC tries a stunt like that again, I would again invade his thread and first ask him to stop using the video's without permission.

Only after that, I'd use copyright.

As you can see in this thread, the word copyright and legality raises all kinds of red flags immediately.

No problem with protecting Nxt, but shouldn't we also think of more creative ways of doing it?

In short, it doesn't sit well with me.
1188  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt marketing & promotion :: Nxt now on Cryptmarket! [articles bounties] on: January 30, 2014, 07:01:58 PM
I want to do something, but want to run it by you guys first.

I'd like to start help Nxt move out of the "trade coin" stage towards a "spending coin" by setting up something like an auction site or a shop.

The inspiration for the auction is basically https://cryptothrift.com/, and I think we all know what a "shop" is Wink.

However, I cannot run such a thing by myself. Such a site would need more people. Also, I cannot implement code for payments etc.

Basically, I need partners who would be interested in setting something like this up.

I am good at the customer and support side of things, so I would bring that (and of course the domains nxtauction.com and nxtauctions.com or nxtmerchant.com) to the table.

Would anyone be interested in joining me? My first gut feeling is that an auction site would be best as the sales side and shipping side would rest with the actual auctioneers.

Any input welcome. This idea is still very much in conceptual phase, as people to do it WITH are a condition for it to work.

Lead developer: Nexern
Status : in progress
EST : January 26

January 26 came and gone, with no update to this date

True, the developer posted a week ago in the main thread (you know, that monster that's almost 1400 pages long!) that there has been a delay.
It's being tested at the moment and will come Smiley

How about an Nxt thread that's only for posting concise, point forn info on client and code developments. Notify everyone working on nxt related projects to update with progress there. Then we have a simple source to glean info from.

I'm all for posting concise info Smiley
I would ask that we then divide who tracks what, as it can be a big chore.

The people doing it should also commit to doing frequent updates, even if there is little to tell. Even saying "no news on the client front" is news and gets people thinking: "Oh yeah, the client! I'm really looking forward to that!" (<< added over the topness mine Wink )

The key to getting people involved and up to date is reliable updates, so they know "it's time for the update again, I wonder what today will bring".

Two or three people doing this should be enough for now, I think.

1193  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt marketing & promotion :: Nxt now on Cryptmarket! [articles bounties] on: January 29, 2014, 10:01:31 PM
What we can do is keep our eyes peeled for the client to come out and then jump on it and all our collective sites and post updates within a few hours.

What do you people think?

+1.

We cannot sell vapor, we can and do work in infrastructure, keep building up an audience, and have everything ready for intense promotion as soon as we have a client for the masses. Then spread the news like wildfire.

In the meantime, I'd be careful to not waste moves that might draw people's interest. A decent viral video or a paid commercial campaign will pay off much better once we have a software product that won't put off people. In this I agree with Pin, we need to gather materials to spread, and plan coordinated moves (if any, other than the starting shot of the client release).

Let's pick a hashtag that we all can use for twitter once the moment comes, have a mailing ready, etc.

Even though I daily meticulously trawl through the main thread, it's very hard to get confirmed data with an ETA.
That makes it very hard to offer definite statements to the outside world.

However, I propose we gét this information by the time-honored method of "asking" Wink

Here is the link to the client thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=412138.0

I think we are too focused on nexern's client. Nexern himself has said that he would be glad if ANY client that is fully functional made it before  his.

We have NO official client, but any of those (well, marcus03's once he gets to the open source stage, which his is working very hard on) can be plugged.

I propose to contact all these developers (also wesleyh, by the way, as he is dropping a pure MacOS client in favour of cross-platform https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.msg4823794#msg4823794) and GET info.

We could then bundle this into a "client/feature" article. We focus the tone of the article on the community development aspect, which in my view is the best approach to make us stand out from other 2nd Generation systems anyway.

That way we cán say something, doing our job, but without giving out info that might prove wrong. Could we make this a segment in the newsletter?
1194  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt marketing & promotion :: Nxt now on Cryptmarket! [articles bounties] on: January 29, 2014, 08:59:05 PM

Can somebody please take over here and get a campaign togheter to launch with the clietn release.

I am so sick of them stupid ' I have article here and there", I have video here...

we need a campaign ! mobilize people swarm!

talented people step forward.

Pin

Pin, there are loads of talented people in here, but since we have no real solid info on the client and what it will be able to do, it's hard to provide PR for it. See the reasons below. We cán, and do provide as much information on what we cán really say something about.

I have contacted nexern, but heard nothing back.

What we cán do regarding the client is basically repeat what nexern himself has said in the main thread.

However, that information is pretty limited, and I feel uncomfortable bringing out information that may not be correct. That will only hurt Nxt ánd all the work that nexern has put in the client. if we announce a feature of the client that for whatever reason doesn't make it in the first release, people will complain. Not fun.

I am a bit at a loss how we are supposed to go ahead on the client front. People keep asking us to push it, but without info, no PR. For me, it's as simple as that, for the reasons above.

What we can do is keep our eyes peeled for the client to come out and then jump on it and all our collective sites and post updates within a few hours.

What do you people think?

You can kick this pig, is going nowhere. One of your big stakeholders in all respect of NXT dumped 1M coins on Bter just to let you all see I can.
I hope you all not surprised this pig is not moving.
The big stakeholders are offloading for more than a weeks now and they will continue to do so for months so don’t expect price to rise in the coming months, but expect the worse, and don’t give me the“good coins getting wide spread” now sh**, cos coins going nowhere, 60 people own 80% of NXT.!!!
You were still not able to release the “official” client (vaporware) so people will have to use other clients instead.
Nexern is personally responsible for the price dip (3x he did not deliver) that will follow after my message.
Just like CCinvestor I am a whale waiting to dump but as you do not succeed to produce anything I start dump right now. (and don’t give me the “good coins getting wide spread” again)
Marketing is a disaster and a joke, you gave 1M to 1 guy that decides to give it out on stupid translations and stupid video.
Nowhere have I seen any marketing effort of value! There is no master plan, no guidance and leadership like dogecoin did, lack of that will kill this puppy soon
Meanwhile you all discussing stupid things like voting system and color of the coin, NXT get your act together and start do something cos ethereum and emunie will kill you instantly they hit the market. What you all got right now is hot air.
It is arrogant to think you have something to offer that others don’t have, if you don’t start get NXT ibn to the open before ethereum and emunie might as well sell all your freaking coins right now cos rhey are worth sh***

and where is that f*** client!

Then get yourself together and make giveaways, promotions and fund some big projects. I'm not a big stakeholder, I have a few several thousand NXT, but I'm trying my personal best with my projects. If I would have 1 million NXT or more I would work full time on Nxt for 6 months or more, to make it worth nearly $1each.

Why should i, did lophie or any other 80 big holders do this?

Man, are you still in Kindergarten?

Also

I am a whale waiting to dump

That made me laugh so hard, when I just noticed it. This image of you will haunt me in my dreams.
I'm easily amused, me Smiley

Nice to hear your opinion

After writing that post, didn't you feel a wall of irony falling on you?

Your argument revolves about us seemingly needing to want you to dump.
So many assumptions and half-facts here.
So many opinions dressed up as facts.

The arrogance of people who think they are entitled is amazing.

I agree however that you should sell your coins now, if you think it's such a horrible product.

General question about our campaign: how are we going to "work" the release of nexern's client? Tbh I hardly know anything about it...

Do we know something about it that we can send out the coming days as teasers?

If not, maybe we should nag nexern  Wink

Edit: just browsed through some of nexern's post. I'll see if I can cobble a list of PR things together tomorrow. I'll try to double check with nexern if he's not too busy

It's not about a client. Who cares if some crypto has got some new client, except us. The main focus is on features. Can we provide any new features (in new client)? How useful are they? What can we do with them? Can we compare them with other cryptos?

I'm asking for both, as both info on the client ánd info on features is interesting.
We get a lot of hassle over our in browser client, so I disagree that a client won't be big news.
Features are also important.

I've PMed nexern to just fill me in (if he has time of course) on both and also the thing hé is excited about.

Any news is news at the moment.

We can't keep promoting a system without giving at least some concrete information indefinitely, so if there is something coming, why not promote it?

I also asked nexern which parts shouldn't be promoted as "coming soon" as we don't need to promote something and then not deliver.

Too many coins... I fear a very bad ending... hopefully not for cryptocurrencies in general.   Undecided

Don't worry. When I launch Qubic all cryptocoins will die, only cryptoplatforms will survive.

What will happen to Nxtcoins after you launch the Qubic?

Coins are just a small part of the nxt platform :-)
