121  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][CRYPT] CryptCoin x11 + PoS | P2P Anonymity | 0% Premine | now on MintPal! on: June 19, 2014, 07:50:17 AM
This isn't one bit anonymous. Once a spend sources coins from multiple addresses, they're permanently linked on the public ledger.

Since verifying signatures always implicates the public key holding the funds, a non-mixed transaction has zero privacy. That's the case here - no improvement at all over Bitcoin.
122  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BMR] Bitmonero - a new coin based on CryptoNote technology - LAUNCHED on: June 18, 2014, 09:33:41 PM
Consequently, it is highly probable that, by means of improved, respectful, and not paranoid communication, a mutually beneficial outcome can be obtained.  While it is always challenging to communicate without full engagement from both sides, there is a lot of motivation to meet that challenge in this case.

Actually, several attempts were made behind the scenes and TFT's continued demand was full admin rights over the Monero repo. Now, what could that be useful for when tacotime already offered push/pull rights? It's certainly not about contributing code - push/pull offers the right to do that without interference or permission.

This is basically a repeating pattern of shutting out everyone else, which is ironically what caused him to lose the project in the first place. The tone of that post makes his level of maturity obvious for everyone to see.

I might also point out that his contribution to date consists of 10 or so lines of code changed in a header file (to clone BCN). Then a bug 'fix' that actually allowed the chain to be attacked later (now fixed). This was followed by his disappearance. Disproportionate visibility indeed.
123  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero Support on: June 18, 2014, 06:41:50 AM
I cant seem to open my wallet in simplewallet, the name I use must be incorrect, but I see no file in the build/release/src folder that matches the address of my original wallet, as shown in the simplewallet log. When attempting to open said wallet, it just generates a new one, which would be fine, but I had some coin in the original one. Any way to recover the wallet name? on Ubuntu 14.04

If you don't see a .bin.keys file with the name of your wallet, then it somehow got deleted. This can't be recovered, just like if you lost wallet.dat in Bitcoin.

In the future, always back up the .bin.keys file somewhere safe right away after creating the wallet.
124  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 17, 2014, 12:19:40 AM
Everyone, if you think about it we can't really spread the hash around. We need to have 1 major or 2 major pools.

You misunderstand how proof-of-work functions. It's probabilistic and memoryless. In plain English this means your expected payout depends on nothing but your hashrate.

The pool is irrelevant, except for superstitions. In fact, centralized mining like what you're suggesting is a ticket to collapses in market confidence.
125  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 15, 2014, 02:01:06 AM
Yes that one

And MoneroPool is the pool I was using. They are mining about 20% of network hash rate too holy crap. People gonna get screwed on this.

You have to wonder about these sorts of trolls. There's no apparent motive or goal -- just (attempted) trolling for its own sake.

Oh well, it keeps our topic bumped. Roll Eyes
126  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 14, 2014, 03:02:13 AM
Domain names are of minimal consequence nowadays. It might have mattered in 1990s or even the early 2000s. Today, PageRank-like algorithms dominate the finding process so the domain name matters little beyond minor SEO bumps.

Frankly, MoneroCoin.com is just a shit domain name anyway. I agree, though, that Monero.com is worth something -- for vanity purposes. Tongue
127  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 13, 2014, 05:24:26 AM
...

More CoinJoin done by special nodes. This must be the newest fad since the 5-day PoW followed by PoS scheme no longer offers good pump n' dump returns.

MoneroCoin.com for sale / will accept offers in Monero

OMG i want it so hard! i bid 0.0000000001xmr for the domain name + 0.0000000001 if you don't post here anymore

Monero means coin, so this poorly chosen domain name basically says CoinCoin. Cheesy

Whoops, I hadn't realized fluffypony doesn't have the Windows blockchain. I'll start updating these on the OP again.
129  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 13, 2014, 12:41:27 AM
Im on Windows 7 starter 32bit. This was never a issue with the previous deamon/wallet.

The deamon sync in its normal slow time. If I sync everyday then the deamon will take about 1/2hr to sync but this problem with simple wallet is unbearable

The issue is due to both stealth addressing and the tx dust from the pool software, which is still being fixed. In a CryptoNote coin, you must test each transaction output to check to see if it is owned by your private key. Therefore, as more tx emerge, it takes longer to scan the blockchain.

One hour for 1000 blocks is much, much too slow (should be ~50x faster). Either he's on an ancient computer or something is wrong with the latest 32-bit build.
130  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 13, 2014, 12:29:48 AM
And that the least of it. Im using the latest 32bit deamon & simple wallet.

I waited for my deamon to sync  and now simple wallet is taking forever to update

Message on simple wallet is 'Height 75701 of 82689' and though its catching up its taking about 1hr per 1000 blk height. This makes my wallet usable.

It takes a minute or so per 1000 blocks for me. What CPU and OS are you using?
131  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 08, 2014, 11:18:39 PM
Biggest difference Monero is in usage, Anoncoin is vaporware. Unclear if it ever be released, project team has no crypto-currency background.
(just academic crypto/math-background, so they may get the crypto done, could be failing the rest of coin and community development, they have real jobs, they wont go full time coin dev, ...)

Anoncoin needs an trusted accumulator, that if compromised could be use to forge coins (which would be impossibleto proof) and decrypting the whole Anoncoin blockchain.
No one knows if Anoncoin scales. Development is payed by US and Israel military ....
You're mixing up Anoncoin with Zerocoin/Zerocash.

Anoncoin is copying Zerocoin as soon as the code is out. This has more or less become their main mission and reason for existing.
132  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 08, 2014, 10:14:07 PM

Looks good to me. At these levels, fixed reward v. exponential doesn't differ much over human lifetimes. It's still about 0.3% 50 years out.
133  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 05, 2014, 10:13:11 PM
after "transfer' i put 0 and then deposit address + amount + paymentID what is the difference  between 0 and 1 or 2,3 4 ? ( except math of course Smiley) Tongue

This is the ring signature ambiguity parameter. The number makes you indistinguishable with that number of other users (actually outputs, but never mind that).

So if you put 2 after transfer, then some cryptography goes into effect that makes your transaction hidden between yourself and 2 other people. Anyone looking at the blockchain can't tell which of the 3 people actually spent those coins.

You pay for more anonymity with higher transaction fees paid to miners, so use it as you need it.
134  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 05, 2014, 12:44:58 AM
Anyone else seeing pretty much a 1:1 parity with investment on hardware / running costs / mining speeds with the GPU miner? Maybe a little edge on CPU, but the gap is so close.

That's incredible.
Yes, everyone has reported hashrates that would make it 1:1. Although the GPU miner might still have more optimizations to come..

Yes, I think we'll reach a state where GPUs deliver better H/s per watt, maybe even 2 or 3x better, but CPUs would still be competitive. This is a pretty good situation for a balance between accessibility, blockchain security, and decentralization.
135  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 05, 2014, 12:40:50 AM
No need for a self-moderated thread. I like the fact that trolls keep this ANN topic bumped to the front page. More or less all altcoin threads are a mess and their only utility is to raise awareness -- the trolls ironically assist with that. In time there will be a separate forum for serious discussion.

Can't give payment id

Too much dust in your wallet (from pool mining?) so it takes many outputs to construct such a specific amount (4.14318). The maximum block size grows over time but right now you can get around it by sending multiple smaller transactions. Play around with numbers to see what works.

New to Monero -- does this project have a multiplatform GUI client in the making?

Hi instacash, the Qt GUI farthest along is this one: https://github.com/Neozaru/bitmonero-qt
138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO]MANDATORY UPGRADE!Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: June 03, 2014, 06:36:51 PM
The rest of your arguments are quite absurd - how does ISO compliance mean "submitting to the establishment"? You understand that none of your devices would work, you wouldn't be able to use the Internet, so much of what you do would be impossible without bodies like the ISO and the IEEE? Compliance with internationally recognised standards is not "submitting to the establishment"

Heh, I'm not the only one that noticed the self-parody of railing against "the establishment" on the internet.
139  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO]MANDATORY UPGRADE!Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: June 03, 2014, 03:31:22 AM
Because I'd like to give some input into this particular project to make it better. To fork everytime you get upset about some trifle is not the way to go. Im voicing my concerns even of it means to critique. If I have come across a bit harsh, I'd like to apologize because it was not my intent to hurt but to remind everybody what chance we have to turn this project into something unique and powerful. Not the rebuild a rehash of overcome systems.

Ok, point taken. Regarding the ISO 4217 compliance, if you don't do it, others will force it anyway. BTC goes as XBT in the codes used by Bloomberg and Xe, two of the largest finance/currency sites because the X prefix is used for all supranational currencies and commodities. This is also why Ripple is XRP, Counterparty is XCP, and Primecoin is XPM. Part of the reason it makes sense for Monero is to legitimize it further because an anonymous coin is naturally prone to being associated with the black market.
140  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO]MANDATORY UPGRADE!Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: June 03, 2014, 02:28:06 AM

I disagree with you and I think this is positive change, see, nothing will change the fact Monero is the strongest CN coin with inherent anonymity features that surpasses Bitcoin, all we are missing now is a qt gui.

Neozaru's progress on this has been excellent, by the way: https://github.com/Neozaru/bitmonero-qt
