James, are we mining on Eligius? What do you think about the Coiledcoin incident?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56675.msg678006#msg678006

Uhhh.... that was 2 years ago.  Undecided

True. I just learned about it 2 days ago Smiley, due to some recent developer hubbub. Still curious how you feel about supporting an operator who considers this sort of behavior appropriate? I don't believe he's changed his stance since.

I can't help but feel like we're wasting our time fighting over bitcoin, when it's not all that well suited to a DEX anyway, due to the long confirmation times. Didn't somebody just post that this has become excruciatingly clear with the advent of counterwallet?
124  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 25, 2014, 12:19:49 AM
EDIT: I will also that ask that you and Luke-Jr discuss the Coiledcoin 51% attack accusations separately from this thread, if that's okay.

No, I believe the Coiledcoin attack should be a part of this discussion. I would never have known about it if it hadn't been brought up, so I investigated what happened. What Luke-jr did to Coiledcoin was similar to a bully on the beach coming along and kicking apart a sand castle some kids were in the middle of building, saying it was in the way of people walking on the beach as justification. He used computing resources which did not belong to him, but were entrusted to his care, to sabotage another project.

This discussion has shown some serious problems with Bitcoin, a high degree of consolidation of centralized control, which needs to be addressed. Proof of work mining was the main turn-off as a gross waste of resources and energy when I first learned about Bitcoin. It would be good if Counterparty and Mastercoin could migrate away from Bitcoin, preferably to a PoS or proof of contribution blockchain.

Can somebody post some credible sources about the coiledcoin event? I currently mine via Eligius and would like to reconsider if this is being accurately portrayed.

More generally, I think pools should be a lot more aggressive about differentiating themselves politically, so small-time miners can 'vote' to support the kind of bitcoin we want. (Though I also understand Adam Back's point, that the miners aren't all that important in comparison to the 'political' clout of the people simply running a node, I still think there's some signal in supporting certain pools over others).
125  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] LitecoinWidget: bitcoin / altcoin price widget for android on: March 19, 2014, 06:10:27 AM
Great widget,  been using it for a while now.

Do you have any plans to add bittrex and Polo next to the list,  an are goi ng to add some more coin icons/logos in the future?

No immediate plans for adding any particular exchanges, but I'm always on the lookout for exchanges that seem like they'll have staying power.

I'll generally add icons on request, it's helpful if you can link me a reasonably high-res icon image with a transparent background.

Very nice widget.  Could you add the colorful Reddcoin logo?

please link me to a logo with a transparent background, and I'll get it on the list.

129  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [ANN] KRAKEN.COM - Exchange Now Open with USD, EUR, BTC, LTC, XRP, NMC, XDG on: March 08, 2014, 03:49:04 AM
Is there somewhere that I can see a list of all the pairs traded on kraken and their volumes (24h/7d/30d or so)?
130  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does BTC-e have a withdraw API? on: March 03, 2014, 04:26:16 PM
Does anyone know if BTC-e's API has a withdraw feature?

Bump. Also curious about this.
131  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 03, 2014, 10:27:38 AM
Doesn't it poll the github account directly controlled by the dev also? not sure what all github allows them to see, but just those 2 sites is disappointing here.
Still glad we got the altcoin bump on this one, hope more investors jump in to pick up the slack.
Too bad that second exchange didn't open up. . .
all these changes to the burn fees for transactions makes the DEX hopeless for endusers and paying a central source for trading this altcoin brings us back to square one.

Great ideas though! A dev will surely figure out usable code to do altcoin DEXing eventually.

Kudos to the dev's for thinking this up, so simple of an idea, yet so requiring of coding skills to actually implement. . .

https://forums.counterparty.co/index.php/topic,71.0.html

Sorry, yes, it does also poll github, I saw that but somehow did not make note of it. The page it polls is this:

https://raw2.github.com/PhantomPhreak/counterpartyd/master/versions.json

And just glancing through the code, it appears that the reason for this polling is to notify clients when an updated version of the client is available.

This seems reasonable to me.

Why the fearmongering

Actually, I was trying to do the opposite of fearmongering, to quell some FUD, in fact..

133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Call for TBF to give a grant to indentify and describe the last goxing mechanism on: March 03, 2014, 09:59:58 AM
By filing a criminal case against Mark if not getting voluntarily those trading records and the bank account records !!!  But quickly !

Mark is not important right now. Gox got goxed. Gox is gone. Unfortunately, quite a nice organization (not TBF) may be gone due to one silly mistake.

Some time ago I wanted somebody to PM me. I am a nice guy. I wanted to make friends. I still want to make friends.

I will be checking my inbox once a day.

In case anyone else is wondering, I believe I have found the post Loozik is referring to:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336.msg2737996#msg2737996

Guys, come on.

Which of you is Miss Whale I played the innocent prank on yesterday?

You DID NOT lose that much money to write such bad things about me.

No need to be too angry with me. I am a nice guy after all  Cheesy

I already said I wouldn't be posting more calls.

Let's be friends. PM me or something.
134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Call for TBF to give a grant to indentify and describe the last goxing mechanism on: March 03, 2014, 09:05:02 AM
Sorry OP, the Bitcoin Foundation has no moneyz left. Vessenes spent it all already.

No problem here as I am 99% sure (having spent the night looking at the blockchain on selected days) the ''disappearance'' of Gox coins were neither a result of hack / theft nor loss of privkeys but was rather an element of long planned and controlled collapse of Gox.

No need for TBF guys to spend a satoshi to investigate hack / theft as there was none.

Not to be blunt, but are you suggesting that a certain $75M lawsuit has something to do with Gox's demise?

[...] the developers implementing code to open network connections to continually poll website/s (wtf?)
[...]
Why would you force people to update into new versions that continually establish a network connection to a specific site without explicitly informing users that the update does such new networking activities? https://github.com/PhantomPhreak/counterpartyd

link to the code?

My perusal of the code shows the only site being hit is blockchain.info for address balances. I am not thrilled that this is in there, but I would be surprised if it is used for anything critical.

Also, it's easy to test how important this code is, just set a bogus IP for blockchain.info in /etc/hosts and run counterpartyd to see how functional it is without being able to access blockchain.

Please add the new Cavirtex trading pairs! Cavirtex now supports CAD/LTC and BTC/LTC.

Somebody was kind enough to mail Virtex support asking them to provide the API details for these. Hopefully, I'll hear back soon, though, I've seen Virtex support just drop things before.

Hi,

ENJOYING THE WIDGET, THANKS.

However, there isn't an accurate nmc function right now. The btce option for this coin, seems to have its algorithms in a tizz. Please can you conform if this is a recognised bug.

Thanks

Not a recognized bug. NMC on Btc-e works great for me. I suggest the following:

1. Ensure that you have the most recent version of the widget. You can find this by going to settings -> apps -> Litecoin Widget. It should be version 52 or 51.
2. Delete the NMC widget instance, and re-add it from scratch.
3. If you're still having a problem, please PM or email or post here the details.

So the parties who were wronged:
- People who bought XCP with BTC, but did not withdraw prior to closing (that would be approximately 35000 - 7000 = 28000 XCP)

I'm one of these people. I deposited some coins, and put out some bids, I think some of them were lowballs. I don't know what got filled. I never withdrew anything. Currently my poloniex account balance shows no BTC and no XCP. Much sadness Sad, it was nearly enough BTC to buy a new car.

I would be happy to donate some XCP or BTC to the recovery effort. And certainly I'm happy to have any trades reversed on poloniex. But it would be nice to get something back.
