121  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: August 29, 2013, 03:07:48 AM
It is getting worse with time unfortunately, the last time this crash-before-initialize was right after other crash, when I needed access to my bitcoins asap Sad Maybe it is unrelated to unicode bugs...BTW, i had log full of this messages
Code:
2013-08-28 18:20 (ERROR) -- ArmoryQt.py:4294 - Error in checkSatoshiVersion
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/opt/BitcoinArmory/ArmoryQt.py", line 4248, in checkSatoshiVersion
not 'SATOSHI' in self.latestVer or \
AttributeError: 'ArmoryMainWindow' object has no attribute 'latestVer'
Tens of these messages by second...

Did you try completely reinstalling? That doesn't seem like a text encoding issue.
122  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: August 16, 2013, 04:55:20 AM
The USD ticker was switched to bitstamp. The spread between Mt.gox and other exchanges is getting a bit ridiculous and I don't beleive it to be a fair representation of the current market price. The charts (http://blockchain.info/charts/market-price) will still use Mt.gox for consistency.

Seems like it would be easy (relatively, given the data you already collect) to calculate a weighted average between all the exchanges you track, which would be a better one number representation of the exchange rate.

Submitted a Blockchain Desktop App to the Mac App Store today. I'm not sure if anyone has tried to get approval for a bitcoin client into the mac app store yet but hopefully it might get approved. If not it will be distributed by direct download.

Awesome! It will be interesting to see if they approve it or not. Good luck!

Here's the script I wrote to extract the private keys from your Armory wallet, so you can import it into a different wallet. Keep in mind that you lose the deterministic function and you should immediately sweep these keys to a new, secure address. If you go back to using Armory, start a new wallet.

I'm not sure how to run this on Windows (maybe someone more familiar with Python on Windows could help), but here's how you'd use it on Linux...

Code:
cd /path/to/extras
python extractArmoryKeys.py /path/to/wallet

It will write a file with all of the private keys that have been generated and stored in the wallet structure.
124  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: July 28, 2013, 11:52:07 PM
This is what happens when it's scanning the blockchain, never completes. This is using the 32-bit version, 64 bit version would crash before even showing the splash screen.

Is there any way to use another client until these bugs get fixed? I really need to use my coins, but can't as they are all stored in the Armory... and the Armory is locking me out :-/

Armory stores the private keys in a pretty simple format. You could extract them and import them into another client. Give me a minute and I'll write a quick script to do that...
125  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Deterministic wallets on: July 28, 2013, 06:53:55 PM
Current deterministic clients pre-generate a number of private keys in the chain. If you don't have the private (or public) keys generated though, you won't recognize a transaction ad being your own.

You will recognize your own transactions if you use consecutive numbers of keys (with limited gaps if any) and you have a server that supports scanning with a master key.
I happen to have such a server.

So like I said, if you pregenerate the private (or public) keys in your chain. Unless you're saying that there is a way to identify the child keys of a extended private key without pregenerating them, but it doesn't sound like it.

So if someone gives me an extended public key, I can generate public keys to addresses that the other person can unlock (by generating the appropriate private key on their side). Is this correct?
Not quite.
You need to give him your public key and the secret.
From these two, one can "guess" further private keys.

An extended public key is the public key + secret/chain code. From this you can determine the following public keys in the sequence, not private keys.

But you should also know that this might be dangerous for your privacy.
It you make your "public key + the secret", anywhere, anyone can find out that all the further addresses determined from it belong to you.

Yes, that is the point of giving someone an extended public key, so that they can generate addresses that you own without having any of your private material.

127  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: July 23, 2013, 02:56:35 AM
I'm in the US, as stated. Unfortunately, there are no exchanges that I'm aware of that allow funding from the US without significant delays and fees. Hence my interest in Localbitcoins.

I'm fairly determined and literate. Yet I find the funding options sufficiently overwhelming that I have yet to do a transaction on Localbitcoins. I guess I just need to jump in and  semi-blindly try some of the options, and figure out the fees by trial and error. I guess it would build my "reputation" as well.

I long for a future where purchasing bitcoins will be as easy as getting change for a $100.   hahaha

If you link your bank account to Coinbase, wait a month, and fill out some personal information, you can get bitcoins at little to no fee instantly.

Anyone have a hi-res photo of the 0.5oz round?

Sort of high res: http://imgur.com/a/v79PP

Hi - I might have missed something but it looks like you have these the wrong way round (I would expect the 1oz coin to require the 39mm case and the half to require the 30mm).

You are correct, I did have them backwards. Further, I've noticed that the 1/2 oz coins are slightly too thick to completely fit into the snap fit cases I mentioned.

I couldn't get the picture link to work Sad

Me either, although it was working earlier today. FWIW, they looked pretty.  Smiley

I couldn't figure out how to add pictures to an album so I made a new one: http://imgur.com/a/v79PP

What size Air-Tite cases do these fit in?

The half ounce coins fit in #1020 Air-Tite T30.6mm DF, the ounce coins fit in #1050 Air-Tite H39mm DF. The half ouncers are a little loose, but not enough to move around unless a decent amount of force is used.

Pictures.

Hey Alan, what's the status of this branch. Can these features be used on prodnet yet?

They were going to be merged into the new version that includes the persistent blockchain updates, though that update has been slower (and I've been more distracted) than I expected.

However, it does still need some more testing... sounds like you are volunteering Smiley

Sure am! I'm just pulling the backupcenter branch into my clone now, then I'm going to test backup and restore on a new wallet first, and if that goes well I will do so on my savings wallet. It won't be my only backup, of course. Smiley

I think what I am going to do is, when I get all these initial orders shipped, I may wait to fund them so that the FIRST funding transaction funds as many as possible, to give them "first batch" distinction.  That might mean that those who get them the quickest might have to wait 7-10 days for me to fund them to let others catch up.  I'm curious on others' opinions.  If I don't do this, then only US buyers would have a chance to get "first batch" coins because theirs will arrive the fastest.

If I do this, I will at least publish where the funds are, so everyone can see they're just sitting there and not accruing "interest" in a ponzi scheme.

(These won't have incrementing addresses like my newest brass coins do... I will just be using the 1Ag* addresses I already generated long ago, in truly random order, since I have so many of them that aren't used)

For what it's worth, waiting a week or two for the coins to be loaded is not an issue for me.
135  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: July 02, 2013, 06:27:59 PM
Having problems sending anything without crash, from recent posts I'm guessing it is just a memory issue. 4GB Ram x86 laptop.

What is the easiest way to move out of Armory without sending coins using it?

Start in offline mode, export your private keys, import into another client.

Keep in mind that you lose the deterministic nature of Armory's wallet when you do this.
136  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: June 29, 2013, 07:16:32 PM
so have armory been fixed yet? still hasn't downloaded it, there's still warning message at the armory site

It still works perfectly (albeit with a ~5 minute startup time) if you have a large amount of RAM (anything over 8GB should be fine).

For anything much less than that, it still is basically unusable. Alan is working on changing this, but it's a major overhaul.
137  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Deterministic wallets on: June 23, 2013, 01:35:48 PM
BIP 32 defines a serialization for extended keys. I meant to exchange those extended keys. This is what the unit tests I mentioned test.
A serialized extended key determines all keys derivable from it, and carries its place in the key hierarchy.

BIP32 also defines the algorithm to derive extended keys from a seed. This is also implemented in BOP in the class I quoted.

Ah, ok. Thank you for the clarification.
138  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Should I sell me 5ghz asic or mine with it? on: June 23, 2013, 01:37:56 AM
I have a 5ghz from BFL pay date aug 2012 underway soon the order had a bug but should by shipped anytime. Now lately I see auctions going up towards 25 btc. I only paid 130 euro for the machine. Even regretting that I didn't order much more. But no one expected the long wait don't we? More people want asics now then there can by produced.

Now the gold question should I sell me asic when I recieve it or hold it for mining? Like I can look diffrent ways to it. But what you should do in mine position fair answers. Do you think it can mine more then 25 btc in its lifetime?

I decided to sell mine, it went for 19 BTC on Bitmit. I'm not sure you'll get much more than that. Still, I think it may be worth it. I made either 7.5 BTC or $1900, depending on how you look at it.

Congratulations... you can make 15-20 USD a day........ Slightly more than a mexican bean farmer......

For a $180 capital outlay, with zero labor costs.
139  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Deterministic wallets on: June 22, 2013, 10:55:04 PM
I personally don't see a reason to swap wallet format between different wallets.
And even if there was, I'm sure someone can build a converter.
So I personally don't really care about a compatibility of my wallet with other wallets, especially when I keep it simple
Not wallet formats. Key export and import.

I think to clarify, in the case of HD wallets, it's less about the individual keys and more about ensuring that all clients, given a seed, will derive the same keys from that seed.
140  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Deterministic wallets on: June 22, 2013, 05:21:52 PM
I've made it 'Accepted' by now, as per BIP 01, 'Final' requires a reference implementation...

Great, thanks! It's not showing up for me yet, but that may just be how the wiki works.
