1201  Economy / Economics / Re: Goldman Sachs Looks to Raise $2 Billion to Buy Celsius Network's Assets on: June 28, 2022, 03:10:11 PM
They should probably increase the size of public auctions they can do to shift all these (if they're investable tokens, but I guess they could end up with less if Celsius has a lot of some assets like luna). $2bn-$11bn is quite a big jump still - I'd imagine that'd be $6bn at least at a public auction...

Is there a reason funds aren't going straight to the creditors too? I've been trying to search around online for a bit and don't seem to be able to find anything.
1202  Economy / Economics / Re: Indonesia's new digital nomad visa allows tax free living on: June 28, 2022, 02:45:17 PM
I wonder if this has been fully thought through or why they'd do this... Does it not promote domestic companies to move and incorporate themselves elsewhere? I'm not sure how easy those loopholes would be to plug and if you're a big company predominantly offering online services it surely encourages setting up your company in a country without corporation tax and employing people in Indonesia). Thst being said, there will still be restaurants and shops taking income and having to pay tax locally but I don't know if they'll fully agree with the tax bourdon placed on them (such as having to put their rates up to fund a higher tax bracket for them - since more people's money may be spent there instead of taxes).
1203  Other / Meta / Re: Private Access Tokens instead of Captcha on: June 28, 2022, 02:34:39 PM
Yup the token to bypass captcha has been here for a while. I think it was just implemented by recaptcha (because it was part of Google/worked on by Google) and you used to have to dm admins for a link to run bots on the site but now it's automated.
1204  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Community reacts after SEC’s Gensler affirms BTC’s commodity status on: June 28, 2022, 02:30:36 PM
or go full currency(like fiat) that gets treated differently in different markets. where there is certain tax on commodities like import/export duties, other taxes like capital gains on asset markets. and income/corporation tax on currency deposits from other sources to you.

or do we try to find a new definition that just treats bitcoin like a piece of art or a cake where its treated like a retail/auction product that escapes most regulation

The US has treated bitcoin as a commodity for a long time afaik, this is just reaffirming it is one (and might be what influenced them calling it one). Import and export duties might be hard to charge on crypto but perhaps the news surrounding large Russians and Chinese markets might have made the US seem like it has control over determining where they come from (it'd be logistically impossible and stupid though).

Food also takes up a space of both commodities and food too (I can see cfd data on orange juice for example - I doubt you'd pay import taxes on a bottle if you took it on a plane).
1205  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: waiting to buy lower? on: June 28, 2022, 02:12:55 PM
It does look like we're taking a break from larger price movements in bitcoins price but there's still a good chance we'll end up going lower.

Most people that sell at these point will end up panic buying again though (especially newbies) if we form a lower low after a few years, we're likely to get near it again but most get to nervous of missing other price action and start buying at a loss (a lot do well out of it too, it was just a waste of time selling in the first place).
1206  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Tips on how I controlled my Gambling addiction. on: June 28, 2022, 02:04:20 PM
I am glad at how much change you did just to avoid it but isn't it too much to ignore friends? You can still text them or whatever means to contact them but it doesn't mean you have to meet and gamble again. They are still your friends and they have the right to know what's happening to you so that they won't worry.

If most of what they did was gamble and pressure each other to then it might not be much of a loss for op. Also I'd think trying to get past the addiction would be more important than those friends at least for the first couple of months/years. If gambling was a big part of their group/life then op or the group might feel rejected if they go back too soon too.

1. Get medical Help
2. Contact the Gambling help section in their country, you can even talk online to the experts
3. Make sure you do not use the website by collectively banning them from your phone/account.

The medical help could point in this direction but I think addictions are easiest to replace with an enjoyable hobby (as long as you pick the right one - especially if there's similar aspects to the previous addiction; such as the social aspect op mentioned).
1207  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Fear of losing my coins grabbed me by neck on: June 28, 2022, 01:55:34 PM
Mobile wallets have been considered one of the most at risk wallets (after Web wallets). I've been keeping some amount of funds on my phone though to test the lightning network and before that I've kept a decent amount of funds in a phone without much issues (the majority of my funds are now on hardware but if you can't afford a hardware wallet, a phone might be OK die the time being - especially if you don't install many random apps).
1208  Economy / Speculation / Re: This interesting Bitcoin chart is not dissapointing. on: June 27, 2022, 03:48:17 PM
History repeats, data never lies.

I was kinda hoping it'd fail, not too sure I want bitcoin to be the (non government backed) asset with the highest market cap out there just yet... (if it's not steady enough, it might be another Microsoft/Twitter)

What happened in 2015? The price looked really boring (except that time it dropped by half) but the bear winter had been well underway in 2014 so why wasn't that considered the big sell off (the peak being november 2013).
1209  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DeFi is not decentralized, DAO is also not decentralized on: June 27, 2022, 03:38:59 PM
This is something that's likely to continue too as wealth in the cryptospace will likely get more and more centralised (especially as big institutions move in and the security of assets becomes deemed to be more stable).

Most defi require a centralised resource now also, even places like uniswap are centralised and only could be considered "distributed" because of the competitiveness of other dexes.

1210  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if bitcoin was exist in world Financial crisis of 2007–2008? on: June 26, 2022, 04:26:36 PM
It's probably have followed a similar trajectory as stocks did and other assets back during the financial crisis. There was chaos at the start of it with a lot of things collapsing but then a lot of growth thereafter - a lot of strong companies survived the recession well leaving weaker ones behind or absorbing them in some cases.

It's interesting to see what happened to established companies in the dot com bubble crash, quite a few of them remained really stable throughout it (and others that were established had really volatile pricing but really stable incomes).
1211  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core initial sync estimates 2 YEARS until synced on: June 26, 2022, 04:21:03 PM
It's either the drive being slow to read and write. If you've got a hdd you can defragment it and see if that speeds it up but you might want to get an ssd for a faster install.

How far are you up to with the syncs? Blocks tend to get more saturated around bull runs (especially the 2017 one) - also sometimes the estimator can be a bit random with its timings at some points too.
1212  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Swapping Bitcoin for "stablecoin": Smart move or disloyalty? on: June 26, 2022, 04:12:10 PM
  • Do you think swapping your BTC for stablecoin makes you are solution to Bitcoin bearish run or a contributor to the challenge?

In some ways it's probably a bet against the people that have already sold. If you're selling a lot, it's obviously a bad idea to sell all at once but there are ways to sell by causing a minimal effect to the market (like selling the same price every few days with a few btc).

  • Do you fell that wishing or believing that the price of BTC should fall below $10,000 makes you a real fan of Bitcoin?

I don't think this is as simple as being in favour or against bitcoin - believing something bad will happen doesn't mean you're against it.

  • Can you comfortably publicize or speak good about BTC while you are ditching it?

I think most people that have been in the cryptospace for a while don't really care about how bitcoin is valued price wise (I think the value in fiat and potential/real value are different - it's a new market with an innovative technology adoption's going to be slow).

  • Is your love real, when you flee because of a temporal setback?

Is it a setback or are you playing the same game as the people that caused the setback - at lot of hodlers are hodlers because they understand the market is impossible to predict or because they're emotional/bad traders i don't sellers are setting them back much.
1213  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: UK P2P crypto trading taxes on: June 26, 2022, 03:52:08 PM
Quote - “ Only in exceptional circumstances would HMRC expect individuals to buy and sell exchange tokens with such frequency, level of organisation and sophistication that the activity amounts to a financial trade in itself. If the taxpayer’s activity is considered to be trading then Income Tax will take priority over Capital Gains Tax and will apply to profits (or losses).”

Adding to what you've put here. There's also 3-6% national insurance that'll be paid in top of those tax rates on income.

It's harder to file capital gains than it is income tax too though (hmrc requires evidence for cgt).

How will taxes be calculated for regular account and crypto? Is it annual, after a year, or when selling because I believe that bitcoin is not taxed until after making a profit from the sale.
Is it possible for a normal account to receive about $ 100,000 per day, or does it need more papers?

Yes it's annual after the year (the January after normally - with the tax year ending the previous april 5th). You won't be taxed on profits (eg by the bank) until you file your tax return (and then they'll give you a link you can use to pay through).

Tax seems high when you have to pay it all at once in the January (and you're in a higher band) he might think it worthwhile at that point (or anytime after he's finished his balance sheet) to employ a tax advisor to take a look at it to see if they can find any ways to reduce taxes (if he's got all the information ready, they probably won't charge much just to check it over and offer advice).

I wouldn't know about how much you can expect to receive and transfer out of your account (and it depends on how you want to do it - you definitely won't get £100k in cash straight out of a high street bank). It'd be better to send a quick email to customer services with banks and be insist on what you actually want from them (such as: a personal account being able to transfer large sums in and out - they might give you advice you don't want or something inadequate because they think they can answer it when they don't actually know how it's handled).
1214  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: June 26, 2022, 03:29:06 PM
But is there no intention for the .com version to return to active?

I think it might just be a more dynamic thing (that they'll review it whenever it seems useful to or if there are better protections for the domain - like anti ddos).

There have been a few mixers that have gone down this route though of only offering tor access (and chipmixer will probably know themselves which was lost used and I can imagine the onion version being used for higher amounts/by more people).
1215  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How trading during bear market can save your portfolio on: June 25, 2022, 07:31:20 PM
I know of instances where someone blew up an account that had 40K worth of BTC when Bitcoin was trading at 50K during the drop trying to buy dips, and now they have only 9K left.

I gave up on working out where the price was going to go around $40-50k this time - the last time we reached it - (I imagine that could've been near the time they invested).

Trying to trade swings like these feels a lot like you're going to be dragged into trading based on emotions or spending a lot of time trying to cut your losses or hope (hodling or setting a buy at price before you buy and holding thereafter feels a much safer strategy).
1216  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Gas sales to China dries up as Ukraine war halts Energy trade on: June 25, 2022, 07:20:43 PM
If the amount of oil imported to China was substantial, this might've just been a way for China to increase the strength of the Yuan to increase their earnings from their exports market and solve issues they might be having with covid and their economy (like the housing market).

China is still the second largest holder of US government bonds too from what I could find (holding about $1tr). This could also just be taking advantage of Russia's situation too - if you're being offered the same thing at a 30% discount, it'd make sense to go with that.
1217  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: I am panicking on: June 25, 2022, 07:15:23 PM
I think for giving away a hardware wallet to someone you might not trust to try to find your funds, just find a way to encrypt the data so they can't decrypt any that's left and then wipe the device and put new data on it. (you can put something like a randomly generated private key in the passphrase box as you normally don't need the passphrase to erase a device and you've got proof it should be secure then too - mnemonics are hard to use as passphrases have length limits).

If you burn an entire device (hardware wallet or computer) you might not be sure you've actually destroyed the data. If you instead just remove solid state drives, hard drives and sd cards from the device that no longer works and burn/keep safe/destroy that, you'll be a lot safer and won't be burning things that work and can be used again/recycled.
1218  Other / Meta / Re: Session expiration on: June 25, 2022, 06:50:12 PM
When I've come across this it's because I've taken a while to write a post (sometimes I think it's happened if I hit refresh too) if either of those can be done from the extension then there's a chance (or if it alters cookie/site data but I think that's unlikely).
1219  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Alt coins are About to pump again! on: June 25, 2022, 04:13:14 PM
For me, the move of ETH/BTC is almost the same as Bitcoin right now. But instead of buying Bitcoin, I rather buy Ethereum.
Speaking of the bottom, I am still not sure this time because there is still a possibility we will test again the recent bottom around $17,000. So I am expecting to visit the $18,000 - $20,000 if it will not happen, then for me, I can consider the $17,000 as the bottom now.

Are you actually buying eth now? Are you not worried about speculating on it for when the eth staking stops (just in case large amounts of eth are dumped on the market over a very short space of time - it might not happen but I'd consider it quite a risk on most cryptocurrency's pricing).
1220  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: UK P2P crypto trading taxes on: June 25, 2022, 04:08:32 PM
He'll have to register here to provide a crypto trading service (if he wants to be legal): https://www.fca.org.uk/cryptoassets-aml-ctf-regime/register

He should be able to do everything from personal accounts (if he wants to and doesn't want the protection of segregating assets and liabilities in a limited company). There are tax registrations that he'll have to complete but those only have to be done by the October of the first year of trading. Multiple bank accounts would probably be recommended (but most have 24/7 customer service lines anyway in case an account is suspended or something - eg if the bank suspects a scam or something).

Taxes shouldn't be too hard to calculate either as long as he keeps logs of trades (local bitcoins might be able to offer downloadable statements too) hell just be paying capital gains tax of 10-20%depending on his other income/taxes.
