341  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: On Hal Finney storing his keys in a safe deposit box on: December 15, 2022, 10:09:02 PM
His keys were likely encrypted before they were put in the safe deposit box of they were put in a box secured by a bank. Steganography might also have been used here too to hide a lot of keys (such as with other random things) making the private keys even harder to find - especially if they're hidden within the others.

There could also have been a chance the keys were put in other places too, maybe a bank in a different country which could keep it more secure.

I wonder if both of his children had to agree on things in order to use the funds though or if each of their keys were able to decrypt and control his.

There's the other chance he gave them some bitcoin beforehand and essentially burnt his coins to avoid conflicts but said he hadn't to make bitcoin seem easier to inherit and therefore more valid as a currency.
342  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 99% of People Will Lose Crypto in Self Custody on: December 15, 2022, 09:48:53 PM
While he has a slight point, I'm really not a fan of the 99% number, knowing how frequently attacked centralized exchanges are.

Is this fancy wording? Almost 100% will lose some money due to fees (excluding miners).

I'd put the figure at below 20% losing all the money they send in the first transaction due to anytbing from malware to lost passwords/nmemonics.

99% of investors in crypto since 2017 have probably lost money due to a hack or an inside job where the exchange goes offline - there are indirect results like crashes too that can take out people's funds as well as the hack of bitfinex and the mismanagement of ftx.
343  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin node with 24/7 inbound connections without static IP on: December 15, 2022, 05:21:11 AM
I think I mentioned this about 5 years ago (for myself) and no-IP seemed to be an option members had heard of to get a hostname (I think they used to give static IPs but might not do).

Tor is an alternative and quite a good one for running a lightning service (some wallets enforce its use). I don't think it matters too much if you're running a node connected via a hidden service or one on clearnet - you don't need as much firewall configurations to use tor in my experience anyway.
344  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: I need help with Trezor Suite on: December 14, 2022, 10:52:52 PM
I have an odd one off the top of my head: ctrl + shift + + or ctrl + 0 may work

There are zero articles i can find anywhere about trezor having zoom but if these don't work let me know and I'll check mine.
345  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Real time risk analytics of cryptocurrencies on: December 14, 2022, 10:40:51 PM
How often does the list change on average or do you not have stats for that? It might be something you could look into especially for developing an "overall risk" of the market (or specifically altcoins).

Even if you listed it as outdated, a list that showed the aggregated statistics of coins over a long period of time would also be very interesting (say 3 months, 1 year to 5 years) to show to investors how much risk they might be taking on investing in that asset type over longer periods of time (I think historic crypto market caps and bitcoin market caps should be available for data as a comparison too which a fairly quick search).
346  Economy / Economics / Re: Fiat and crypto and stock is bs, but property is real on: December 14, 2022, 01:16:10 PM
With property, how do you know the wall is definitely structurally sound without a surveyors report? Why isn't the same applied to investing?

When buying a property, you're often using someone else's interest too (like a bank) so you're more protected due to the intermediary. With crypto and stocks you don't have tage same but you could probably get them (such as by picking a well diversified portfolio for stocks and investing a small % of those funds into bitcoin).
347  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: I’m a Bitcoin OG and very confused how Defi works exactly? on: December 14, 2022, 04:50:13 AM
1. You can send tokens to cold storage once you have them but I don't think you can interact with these sites while having your funds in cold storage. You can use hardware though too and that's normally advisable (I don't think you're able to use multisig either).

2. One thing I can think of is that dYdX has leverage while uniswap doesn't which could be one thing changing the volumes (ie one quoting actual values on spot and one quoting volumes on leverage).

3. You can use side chains for lower fees if the token is on there and what you want to do is on there. You can save on trades too but you don't save much. Dydx also used to pay your loading fee when I last used them you aren't holding your funds if they're stored in Dydx, I don't know how they're stored but if you're putting a lot in there I suggest you try to find out.

4. You probably can, from what was mentioned in the above response dydx is compatible with wallet connect which should be compatible with mew (just from a quick search).
348  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PLEASE HELP ME RECOVER MY BITCOIN CORE WALLET on: December 14, 2022, 04:35:10 AM
when I try to load by bitcoin wallet I am getting another error: "Wallet file verification failed. Refusing to load database. Data file '/Users/jwiraj99/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/wallets/BTC Wallet/wallet.dat' is already loaded". Is there a way to fix this?

I should add that the first time I tried to load my wallet while i was resynchronizing to the network I got an error that said: You need to rebuild the database using -reindex to go back to unpruned mode.  This will redownload the entire blockchain." Now I am getting the former error each time I try to load the wallet.

It doesn't look like an error that needs fixing, it's just saying you've already loaded that wallet file so it won't accept it again because then you'd have to rescan.
349  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PLEASE HELP ME RECOVER MY BITCOIN CORE WALLET on: December 13, 2022, 11:04:51 PM
Can you find your wallet.dat? Back up that file before you do anything else so you're sure you can't delete it accidentally.

Being without a settings file sounds OK as long as you still have the wallet.dat and it hasn't been corrupted.

Did you encrypt your wallet?

I'd recommend going straight to trying to do a reinstall or download the binaries from bitcoincore.org and try to see what you get access to.

When you load up your wallet with core it'll say 0 for a quite a while because it also needs to sync. But once you see the address again, it'll become a lot easier to get the funds out if you need them quickly or to wait for the software to sync.
350  Other / Meta / Re: Why do users just state their opinion on a topic rather than discuss it on: December 13, 2022, 08:33:27 PM
It probably depends on the board. If you're asking for opinions and want to know what people do, are you going to be after a majority or do you just want individual opinions (I've seen topics where I think it's worth mentioning something I've done similar to what's already been said as it gives it a vote in favour of it).

I've done the opposite in a lot of threads and quoted 5+ posts and wondered whether it's going to be too much to read.

Some people in a rush to make posts - particularly those in the gambling campaigns that pay for a certain number of posts in the gambling section - often do just post in response to the OP and sometimes it's fine and other times you can watch a thread grow to be 5 pages in the first day - a lot of the times the OP is asking a question that's been asked before. I'd say from my time as a newbie, I liked it when my threads grew and people mentioned things and discussed what others had said. You don't need everyone to discuss the same things either, for example, you don't normally go 8 posts without someone discussing what's been mentioned previously/in them.
351  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Canada bans crypto leverage and margin trading after FTX collapse on: December 13, 2022, 08:20:25 PM
I don't think they've gone that far yet and they probably won't (Re segregating their market from the world like the US does).

I think this might protect Canadian investors from a lot of insider manipulation and other things that likely goes on at these exchanges (as well as protecting investors from poorly balanced companies).

It might allow the sector to open up a bit though too, it'd be possible to make a dex with advanced futures trading that was fully decentralised and that would be much better for traders as they could see how much funds are available and how safe their funds actually were on the platform.
352  Economy / Economics / Re: A breakthrough in thermonuclear fusion technology! End of the era of hydrocarbon on: December 13, 2022, 05:09:49 PM
Those countries will probably invest in the machinary for doing fusion instead imo - or just do like they did with green energy and make it hard to get and expensive...

I think it was only a matter of time until fusion replaces everything for energy production, but a long time. The experiments here are 5-40 years away from becoming mainstream depending on how much is invested in making them that way.

Oil and gas may become like any other legacy technology there is too, you're certainly not powering a car off fusion for quite some time - and those would definitely be expensive. Is one of the main sources of hydrogen currently not from hydrocarbons which could have been used for fuel?
353  Economy / Gambling / Re: 0.022 on Morocco lol on: December 13, 2022, 12:40:18 PM
This looks like a match that could end in either outcome but I don't think France did that well against England do that could move in Morocco's favour.

I'm surprised by how much the European victories/defeats have changed in a year though too since the euro as there seems to have been a few matches ending in different results - especially if France do beat Morocco.
354  Economy / Economics / Re: This could be the biggest news in 2022 on: December 13, 2022, 12:34:32 PM
I don't think that Bitcoin Group went after the history of the bank, although salvaging a name that old is a nice gesture after all, I think that they went after the banking licenses.
However, I don't deny it, bitcoiners buying a bank is a news I do like (even if it's not really in the spirit of Satoshi's white paper, but maybe we'll get there too someday...)

I wonder if they'll merge with the bank at some point. That's the reason I'd see for doing something like this (for an "established in 1754" title if they did buy the whole bank and not just a majority of shares).

$15M sounds cheap for a bank though anf it actually could be negative news it's getting this much attention (if current investments in the are higher).
355  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: (WTB) Looking Proper Formula for Mining Calculator on: December 13, 2022, 01:43:32 AM
Is there a lot of coins you want to compare it to too? I think some might perform differently based on the size of the blocks and how much ram/cache you have available.

There are also already scripts available for this like nicehash.
356  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If there were someone's Assets in FTX before FTX collapse? on: December 13, 2022, 01:34:50 AM
Those same people were warned from the earlier report that the exchange may be insolvent but they chose to ignore that and now they have to wait for the liquidation of FTX assets.

The news felt like it was going really fast at the time I caught it (CZ's binance tweet about selling FTT) I don't think it was easy to withdraw your funds within enough time unless you were there around the time just before withdrawals were suspended (I think there was about 2-12 hours of constant speculation and rapid news changing - some news agencies were trying to push out articles every 10 minutes at a similar pace to what we've seen for potential escalation in wars).

There will be people who lost money due to:
  • Having funds on ftx
  • Having anything related to ftx (such as ftt)
  • Having other cryptos, there was too much news to read at once but I heard something happened to Solana around that time
357  Economy / Economics / Re: Binance's Alleged Crypto Audit Failed, Its Auditor Refused to Vouch For It on: December 13, 2022, 01:20:45 AM
In my opinion Binance does have the best interests of its customers in mind

I think it has the best interest of itself in mind. It's just become quite present on social media and in crypto that it can look to have the best interests of its customers in mind.

It may find ways to serve both but I doubt it'll hold back if it finds (more) ways to exploit its customers (like when they kept withdrawal fees far higher than they had to be - though they might've just realised they were funding their competitor).

Unfortunately, users are affected by the reputation of the provider, and when the options are limited, the pressure is less.
Which leaves at least me to question why they've done this now? Why?

Less competition = more customers coming to you. Why would you want to get an audit done where you aren't certain you're going to pass the audit? Binance isn't great at dealing with regulators, perhaps it's just not great at communication except for some who want to believe what they say and not verify their claims.

Either that or this is some plan to keep them in the news, maybe to make those who didn't want to do kyc come back or to make those who did want to use them more - there's presumably a lot of people who have used futures to gamble in the past and it's "good" free advertising for that.
358  Economy / Gambling / Re: Researching for Upcoming Game on: December 12, 2022, 10:55:56 PM
I think if you want your project/games to stand out here you probably have to offer something quite different or a few things that are unique from the completion.

No kyc and a provably fair system.are the best way to go. I don't think a service can expect to do well straight away either, a lot of people here are skeptical of new projects, you'll get a lot more deposits a few years after initially opening if you keep a good reputation.

Games with a bit of character are generally beter than those that aren't too, from something as simple as artwork to offering different rules to introducing completely new games that can't be played elsewhere are generally good places to start imo.
359  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance's proof of reserves raises red flags: Report on: December 12, 2022, 12:30:59 PM
The not posting liabilities publicly seems to be a bit of a big problem for most, I assumed users were able to locate their collateral addresses as unique to them if they're going to have a real collateral system (but that'd be really expensive).

I think binance is trying to make itself seem more functional than it is - I don't know if "binance has 97% collateral cover" would make sense though and the article says they have 101% of it when they remove margin positions which sounds like it has full collateral cover for now.

Obviously blockchains can't store the future and if there is a way to check this sort of thing with binance it'll probably be used to cause market manipulation at some point. The proof of reserves idea has been floating around for years, they either had it implemented and waiting or rushed it and it's broken (and if binance hasn't changed much since I last used them it might be the second)...
360  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: How to install and operate bitcoin core wallet? on: December 12, 2022, 11:57:21 AM
I wouldn't say the setup is too complicated, or complicated at all. Bitcoin core doesn't feel as intuitive as some other wallet software and seems to leave quite a few features hidden (such as how it used to not generate an address on startup iirc) but it's not hard to set up and is easy to use once you get used to it.

As said above you can run a full node if you have 500gb disk space free or you can run a pruned node that takes up less space (but you'll still have to do the initial sync and you might not be able to use multiple wallets as easily).
