1221  Other / Meta / Re: Enforce “grammarly ” like score minimum to post.. on: June 25, 2022, 03:46:06 PM
This is starting to appear like a paramilitary forum, which will be difficult for other members who aren't proficient in English and don't have a local board to communicate fluently. Also, we have several types of English, such as British America, Australia, and the US, how do you think the forum will manage this, or will the site reject my post because my official language is British?

Yeah it'd definitely make the forum look like it favours only a few ways of writing then too. There are Asian, European and African dialects of English that are easy to understand but grammarly probably hates (because it's not designed for them).

If its only for those who participated a campaign, yes, although the manager can decide for that since some requiring local posts.

Grammarly does more than English but there's probably going to be a local board missed out with this too (and Boards like Scandinavia having 3-6+ different languages - just an example, not sure how active that board is).

Campaign managers can shove users posts into grammarly too. Realistically, grammarly hates my grammar and I'm a native English speaker so I could imagine they'd have a hard time trying to do it and probably wouldn't get something very constructive/useful.

Also grammarly itself would probably charge for this unless there's an open source version.
1222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Does it Mean for a Crypto Company to Use Leverage? on: June 25, 2022, 03:36:51 PM
The vast majority of companies use some type of leverage, but solid companies do so with a low debt-to-equity ratio and have plenty of cash flow to face payments even if there is a market downturn, apart from other assets to provide as collateral, just in case.

A lot of stable companies have a debt to assets ratio of ~70% (or they have for a while, not sure about more recent times). It depends on the company how indebted they are, some banks have a 95%+ rate for example too.

I saw an article by the ft a few days ago that was doing a bit of a roundup on what had been going on in the cryptospace and it said a large number of companies were facing margin calls (this isn't to say they were over leveraged, just that they'd have to increase collateral or sell assets).

There's the chance in every industry a company gets liquidated by overleveraging and I do find it quite worrying some crypto companies have taken these steps already as it's a good way to desuade investors if they don't have good cash flow to quickly escape positions (crypto isn't an always strong market, the price is a lot stronger on rallies upwards than it is in bear winters - March 2020 was a good example of that).
1223  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Alt coins are About to pump again! on: June 25, 2022, 02:42:34 AM
you can check the 1d chart. you will see something

Potentially.... But I can see a few things (on the 1h chart). One is the rise you're predicting, another would be a drop and retest of 0.054 - I'd take caution when trying to call these things in either direction if I were you. I think bitcoin has to do well price wise for alts to also do well so this is a speculation on a speculation.
1224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Wallets for Bitcoin lightning network on: June 25, 2022, 12:09:03 AM
Are all these on your list just hot wallets? Not that familiar with other wallets though blue and phoenix wallets ring a bell to me.

LN wallets all have to be hot wallets or have hot wallet components imo. There's a security tradeoff with the person you're opening your channel with (and a potential it relies on trust).

Edit: Checked it, it says "Lightning support in Electrum is experimental".

I think it says this because they're an experienced and well known developer in the cryptospace and are offering the ln in all updated wallet software versions - it's been out a while but I'd like for anyone using the lightning network to try to understand it (and check you're happy and comfortable with its limitations).

^ Yes, where is Electrum wallet that is a very easy and convenient way of using Lightning Network transactions.
I like using Electrum it can be used both on-chain and lightning network transactions. A PC version is always good than the mobile version wallet app but unfortunately, this is not available on Apple's AppStore.

It's disappointing it's not available in the appstore, I'd agree with that - especially if over half of the US still has iPhones (afaik in Europe it used to be 20% and is now likely even less that exclusively own an iPhone).
1225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Class in my Village High School on: June 24, 2022, 05:31:01 PM
This is quite impressive to see you've managed to do it and incorporating it with financial education would be a good idea. I hope someone has access to the Internet in those rooms in case you get an interesting question and need to look more into it.

But even Satoshi Nakamoto also used, "We", that means, he was not alone in the project.

We're working on a release soon that puts a password on the JSON-RPC interface, but until then, avoid using the -server switch, and don't web browse on the same machine where bitcoind is running.

In this example, "we" probably meant the community (ie someone pointed this out to me and told me how to fix it).

There were likely always more contributors than the one person working on this but I don't think satoshi was a group but rather a figurehead type person (especially considering they corresponded quite a bit with individuals at the start).

There were definitely other groups and other developers working on the software and making forks by 2011 (eg electrum).
1226  Economy / Exchanges / Re: CoinBase worse case on: June 24, 2022, 05:10:49 PM
Is this something that's easy to mitigate though as it looks it? Like if you sent the funds on to yourself and then sent them to the other person afterwards then it'll be harder to detect (it'd cost a few cents more to do that but that's probably worth it).

It's probably more problematic that Coinbase doesn't have a great track record with keeping user data safe so there'll probably be more ways to bypass this too.
1227  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Wallets for Bitcoin lightning network on: June 24, 2022, 01:21:44 PM
Did you mean to miss out electrum? Afaik they have a mobile version compatible with the lightning network (I've only used the ln on PC with electrum though - and used blw and eclair on mobile).
1228  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin leaves oversold RSI territory on Daily chart on: June 24, 2022, 01:16:46 PM
The rsi relies quite a bit on momentum too though, in the past when bitcoin has been oversold it's taken time and stagnation to bring it back to neutral (~50-60).

I've seen long times of flux between those levels too (particularly 2018) so it's possible we could see the start of that.

I think we're due some stagnation if we're in a bear market (and then for selling pressure to have an effect when buyers see nothing has happened for a while).
1229  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which cold wallet to buy? on: June 23, 2022, 05:05:09 PM
I also am invested in 10 different crypto not just 1 or 2, does that also mean I need the Nano X?

Can you list them here? It might be that some are tokens on other networks (like erc20 for ethereum).

What wasn't mentioned above was that if you do want to move your coins to an exchange from a wallet (particularly bitcoin) you might end up waiting an hour or two for the transaction to confirm - that might not be long but it might be worth remembering.
1230  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: June 23, 2022, 02:11:39 PM
@ChipMixer
What happens with a user's deposit if the site doesn't come back online 7 days after the session expires, but he couldn't use the service or extend the session due to the downtime?

Yeah, that's my biggest concern, I sent them an email yesterday and no answer yet. I saved the session token, of course.

I'm assuming it'll come back within the 7 days or the server might know it's offline.

Realistically, since transactions were done over the blockchain the deposit address used should be enough to link the funds back to you and I seem to remember it being used in the past if people have lost their session tokens.
1231  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which cold wallet to buy? on: June 23, 2022, 01:56:11 PM
Is a hardware wallet a must? Or is leaving my crypto all on Coinbase OK?

It depends on how much you have there, I'd recommend if the amount you're storing on the exchange exceeds 10x the price of a hardware wallet, you're probably better off getting one.

If you have a smaller amount of funds you can also make a wallet with electrum and store your funds there (electrum.org - their wallet also works quite well with ledger and trezor).

How likely is it that Coinbase could get into trouble one day?

We can't know for sure but a lot of things can happen:
1. What if the exchange closes and you're out of the cryptospace for so long you lose your funds due to that.
2. The exchange could lose money due to a hack or poor financing.

There's always a risk with leaving funds on an exchange but there might also be a risk in entrusting yourself too.

I'd say ledger and trezor are the best warm wallets (cold wallets have no online interaction and require it to remain secure).
1232  Economy / Economics / Re: How Will Investing Help the Economy of a Country on: June 22, 2022, 10:01:20 PM
What do you mean by this?

Investing in crypto isn't a safe investment, I'd liken it to investing in a new innovative tech firm - it might do well but there's always a chance it might not.

Investing in communities normally starts as an investment in extracting something of value (commodities or services) which can then see more growth on top of that.
1233  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: South Korea Banned Terra/Luna Staff on: June 22, 2022, 09:51:47 PM
I saw the news about the ban on the ft before as well: https://www.ft.com/content/19c27ae1-ae72-4668-b3a9-162adc27dffc

This is worst, and probably Korean government are just preventing them to leave the country while there’s an issue of manipulation and an on-going case maybe against them.

I think that will be a case that goes on for a long time now too (perhaps more than a year this travel ban will be in place).
1234  Economy / Gambling / Re: Which crypto sportbooks are VPN friendly on: June 22, 2022, 07:58:47 PM
Where have you looked at already? A lot of sites don't like you using a vpn because they normally have odds that favour them for domestic bets (I just checked through a few site's terms - searching "proxy" and "vpn"). A lot of this might also depend on whether some sites ask for kyc before you deposit/withdraw.
1235  Economy / Economics / Re: US Gas Tax Holiday; is it necessary on: June 22, 2022, 07:40:01 PM
Is this move fuelled by a desire to gain favors in the election or is he truely wasting public funds?
Can't read Biden's mind, but when you're asking a question like that about a politician, cynical ol' me would tell you that you'd be crazy not to think optics didn't play a part in making such a decision.

The US seem far from a recession though, I don't think 18 cents/gallon (~4%) is actually going to be that noticeable. The UK government reduced taxes on petrol (gas) by 5% and have since started investigating whether forecourts (gas stations?) have actually been passing on the saving or not (I guess that's going to be hard to track though too).

If they're cutting the entire rate, I don't think it'll affect much on a federal level. But areas like california with their high fuel tax levies (if those are still in force) are probably going to notice this even less too.
1236  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DOGE records increased utilisation in criminal activities, research shows on: June 22, 2022, 07:24:12 PM
The thread title and topic is a bit laughable... I don't think any traceable crime could really occur when doge was 15 sats Grin.

But yes as things increase in popularity and price you can expect criminals to try to monopolise off that as well as people who don't understand why something's gone up not caring about where they put it (if they've not mentally realised the gain in actual numbers or don't need it).
1237  Economy / Economics / Re: Strong russia and china narrative vs weak usa but the thing is on: June 22, 2022, 03:59:26 PM
I think China's equivelant to wall street is probably in Hong Kong but that was owned by the UK and still has a large amount of dual nationals (afaik).

The difference between these is that you can invest in stocks from a lot more countries than are able to invest in Chinese stocks (this is a thing that's changing as you can buy etfs for chinese companies but not individual stocks).

The similarities economically are the same across most regions at the moment though - China has a lot more economic issues due to covid still spreading a lot over there and being quite an isolated economy. Russia isn't a very functional economy either, there's a reason you don't hear much about it and I've seen estimates their current strategy of taking over old businesses that leave is going to cause a lot of supply chain problems and cash flow issues (at least to get it started).
1238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Make .cookie file readable for bitcoin group on: June 22, 2022, 03:34:28 PM
Can you not just

Code:
sudo chmod 640 .cookie

If you're not used to doing things like this, it might be a reason not to and just run everything under admin until you actually need something more secure (eg have something people are likely to interact with).
1239  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: WiPhone Hardware Wallet project? on: June 22, 2022, 03:04:48 PM
Looks like a fun project but I'm not sure how practical it would be to use it for a crypto wallet. (it's a shame they didn't get an arm processor as most hardware wallet's code run off those).

If you're thinking of using the wifi or Bluetooth parts it might become as secure/insecure as a hot wallet as well (in a worst case scenario).

You'll probably be needing a keyboard as well (unless you plan on dumping runnable python code from a computer straight onto it and doing all your inputs to that via a camera or the keypad it comes with).

1240  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is E-DeFi , and How it could help Crypto Community in Time of Dip on: June 22, 2022, 02:45:01 PM
Bitcoin is already safe and fully decentralized.  Tell me how and why is this 'E-DeFi' more advanced and helpful than Bitcoin currently is?  You make it sound like Bitcoin is just a purely speculative asset with no capability of offering Peer to Peer transactions in a decentralized manner.

I assumed they meant a decentralised version of a site like opensea but for selling additional goods (such as physical items).

It's probably overinnovating for the time though as a lot of this would require escrow (for physical items and some digital ones that are hard to verify) or could just be easily done by using currently available options (making your own website and advertising it would be a lot easier (and arguably already as decentralised as it needs to be).
