Have you ordered by UPS or DHL?

I have seen people asking here about which courier and would like to know.
Is it possible to choose courier when you order from Bitmain directly?
1242  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 10, 2014, 04:59:50 PM
Could you report hash difference (if any) after 24hr?
I sure will (and that is why I said "still early days ...".

Well, it has been a few days. Can you report any increase in hashing on 4.6.0 in comparison with the stock version?
Thanks.
One thing that is still whirling away in my mind is why the same chip always comes trumps with the X? Also this may have something to do with power, as I am running the S3 off a 550 watt server PSU. If the unit is drawing anything over 460 watts, then that might be the reason.

I have one batch1 miner at 237.5 with one ASIC that always has the X, hence it is at 464-465Gh instead of 478Gh, but since it is still better than 441 at default, I let it be.
I suppose I could let it be, but it seems to be running per my "normal" now I have turned it down a notch and thus far a touch above the hash-rate I got when overclocked at the higher freq (with 4.6 upgrade).

This, however, is the proof of the pudding (to me at least) that 4.6 is worthy of getting, if not just for the security bug-fixes.

Couple of days of running under 4.6.0 now, and very happy. CPU load lower, and less hashrate variance.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Thank you Con!

And the proverbial chicken and egg situation:
The smoother hash-rate variance is due to stable submissions thus accurate dynamic Diff allocation, or is it the other way round?
1243  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 10, 2014, 04:12:20 PM
That's unusual.  I've been running 4.6 for ~2 days now with no issues (clocked at 250).  You can see from my hash results that there's been no significant performance difference: https://www.miningrigrentals.com/rigs/491
That small dip on the 8th was me upgrading.
It is unusual, 4.6 has been out for justa acouple of days for starters, and I was running ar 262.75???
But I'd say there certainly is an improvement in the hash-rate, if only (as attested above) attributable to a reduction and hash-variance.

Yep I can. I got the OK, not so good and bad news I am afraid.
1. The OK news
Upgrading to the latest cgminer clearly reduces the load and that definitely slightly improves the hashing. It may not be significant, but it certainly does.
I have not been able to collate any empirical evidence to this effect (see below), but I have no doubt cgminer 4.6 hashes faster than the stock one.
2. The not so good:
a) I have NOT been able to run a full un-interupted 24hr stretch with cgminer 4.6
b) The S3 that I updated cgminer on was overclocked to 262.5 and had been running very well without any significant HW errors.
3. The BAD
a) Having left the unit to hash as usual, I logged into the GUI the next day and was greeted with HW errors counting in the 100,000 ! In the panic, I immediately clicked the system tab and selected reboot. (I forgot to take a shot of the screen).
b) Yesterday, I gave the unit close observation for the few hours I had and the errors kept cropping up over time. This had thown me off until late last night I noticed a pattern.
The unit will hash as usual after a reboot without any issues and single digit HW errors for 2hrs. Between 2 and 3 hrs, there are two scenarios that can develop.
1. HW errors creep up into double digits and past 3 hrs they'll shoot up at will! A refresh would give any additional number from single to three digits!
2. The other scenario is one of the chips is marked X - when this happens, the HW errors remain normal BUT the hashrate decreases.
In both the scenarios above, I noticed the GUI hash-rate reduced to approx the one I had before updating cgminer at 256.25, so early this morning I decided to reduce my speed to 256.25 and so far, running like a champ! I believe by early tomorow I'll have the numbers to show against my earlier tests (barring another HW error panic ....!).

One thing that is still whirling away in my mind is why the same chip always comes trumps with the X? Also this may have something to do with power, as I am running the S3 off a 550 watt server PSU. If the unit is drawing anything over 460 watts, then that might be the reason.

Finally, I noticed that after updating to cgminer 4.6 if I do a power cycle or a reboot via the GUI, the miner status is screwed up. At times it will say its been up for hours and show a puny avg GH/s (say 12 GH/s avg) whereas I have just rebooted! But when I reboot via SSH (putty) this does not happen.

Congratulations to the owner of the first block mined by a large farm on this solo pool!

There was no great luck involved here, there was a lot of hashrate being thrown at this.
Yipeee! And I just pointed away my entire 14GH ... could have been me!

It doesn't say anything about the shipping date yet, I was going to order some B8 as the wait was less than 10 days but as you say sold out. I fully expect B9 will be ~10th October going by previous batches. Shame as I bought over 40x S1's but since then all bitmain's stuff has been overpriced or long pre-orders Sad
Just get the S3+ upgrade kit then, you'll have a very short lead time (shipping before / by 20th)

I sold all my S1's, I refer you to my previous comment about overpriced Smiley
Still, for a guy who's owned 41 S1's, I am sure you can rope in a few friends to amass the few heatsinks that you'd need to get the S3+ kit up and running for less than the price of an S3+. I reckon one can fashion a set of heatsinks for less than 0.04BTC, and if you do away with the stock temp control system and simply blast / pull fresh air through all would be well! But hey, just a thought!
1247  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 10, 2014, 08:48:34 AM

B8 is sold out.  B9 is up but no price yet with shipping to start on 9/20 or earlier (since B8 started shipping already).

2 wires in the UART  - specifically 3 & 5 (4 is an earth/ground)

I'm pretty sure though by at the cable to the blades it's serial comms

http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/61107G.pdf

it seems to go moving away from the blade

UART - MCU - USB hub
Again, something interesting here. thanks for sharing.

Some of the above posts seems like they are waiting for something from me here.
I was actually have nothing more to give or promise than organising and tempting these hardware hackers to achieve the goal.
My time lines said are all expectations of which some of you will try and contribute.
Hope you guys understand what I meant. If the post misleads anyone somehow, please change your mind in this direction.
Now on I will restrict from responding to those comments just to keep this thread understated from the subject.
Whatever.
1250  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [DIY] - Reward $100 | Antminer S1/S3 Blade on Raspberry Pi on: September 09, 2014, 09:44:47 PM

Seems like you misunderstood the thread and its motives.
This is not something who are looking for money, but for those who are real enthusiasts who wish to do hardware hacks.
Its not just a solution from me, any one can tryout.
When S1 owners upgrade with S1 ti S3 upgrade kits they get a lot of S1 controlboards/Blades to play with.
That's the reason for waiting.

No need to wait for upgrade kits, I bought an S1 to play with the firmware, looking for a way to unbrick control boards, looks like MrTaugeran did it, so I've found another playground.
I'll give a few updates on the hardware side when I'll finally have an S1 in hands in 2 days.

And if I'm not mistaken, using a RPI's usb or any computer should also work if you use the correct CGminer.
A simple interface board for the USB could do it.
And this interface board would cost almost nothing to produce.
Now YOU are talking!
allcoinminer promised something in a week, did not / could not fulfill his promise but rather (cheeky of me) gave another smokescreen. But the initial promise seemed substantial, only now I realize it was nothing!

Back to the hacking, I was thinking of the simple USB interface connected to a computer as the lowest cost (both financially and knowledgewise) because I currently run my S1's in a box detached from their puny temp control. I have their stock fans on one side of the box as inputs and on the other side I acquired a set of 150CFM server fans (for GBP 5.00 @) sucking all the heat out (aka exhausts). On an average hot summer day (I keep them outside under a tree) they average temp of approx 34 - 38 on any unit. Also, I power the fans independently.

So there you have it, keep hacking ma friend, but once I have a look over the Kano driver, I'll be in a better position to say whether I can keep on this hacking path. But I like your approach very much!
1251  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 09, 2014, 07:21:17 PM
So, the S3+ is the S3 with a firmware upgrade or is there a hardware mod as well or is that information not available?
If you'd asked me (I know you did), I'd say the S3+ is the S3 from around batch 6, and ofcourse, you'll also get a firmware upgrade.
1252  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [DIY] - Reward $100 | Antminer S1/S3 Blade on Raspberry Pi on: September 09, 2014, 06:52:07 PM
I'm getting an S1 in 2 days as a new toy to play with after the gridseed and zeus.
Considering what is the control board, I believe something can be done, but will almost for sure need custom firmware, and a few components.
I'll elaborate when I'll have the control board in hands, but it's not like splitting the data sent to one board to feed 2 or more boards.
I won't have the software skills to do it, but I'll probably have the hardware ones, if it can be done.
I've got my ear to the ground on that ma' friend!
I am convinced that those ribbon cables are simply rx/tx lines from a USB chip on the controller board. In my scheme of things, I was actually looking at running the boards without the bitmain controller board and simply powering them up and connecting to my own laptop's USB via a custom USB chip (I am guessing there are going to be at least 4 tx/rx lines per board) that can handle 4 lines then looking at kano's driver (I already have a miner) to run on a windows PC.

But hey, mine is probably more suited to me and will be in the works for a while now, nevertheless I await your results in a couple of days when you get your S1 (I personally want to use the boards from an S1 that I will be upgrading with the S3 kit).
1253  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 09, 2014, 06:42:25 PM
the s3+ firmware + the 4.6 cg miner has pretty much got rid of the hardware errors I was getting on one of my S3s.  ok it was only 1.5% (according to Mantmonitor) now it's 0.0018%.

you can check the version via the api

Quote
if you are on a remote machine, from another copy of cgminer you can do the following command:
Code:
java API version 192.168.1.99
Where 192.168.1.99 is the S3.

Or on the S3 itself run
Code:
cgminer-api version

Yes, I see the version number in the download URL.

Wonder what frequency the S3+'s will be shipped as.  Another 11 days or sooner....  And transit will take how long?
Ahh! you found the post about version checking .... good on you.
As far as the frequesncy of the S3+, check the product web page on bitmaintech, off my head it is 440GH/s but overclockable to 500GH/s.

I have noticed bursts of hash rate significantly over 500 even though my frequencies shouldn't get the rate that high as I'd get an X in the row of os when using the higher frequencies  one is on 237.5 and the other 231.25. just spotted one claiming 657.
Hash spikes are not un-usual when your Diff is still low. Let it run for a while and these will become more reasonable (and these will be in the 5s data). Check again after several hours and again after 24 hrs to get a better picture.

PS. Is there any S3 cgminer 4.6 support thread aside from this?
1255  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 09, 2014, 05:39:10 PM
Reading the last few pages I opted to install the latest cgminer on what had been the problem S3, #2.  Before doing so I ran opkg list-installed | grep cgminer on both S3's so as to ascertain the present version.  Both had 3.12.0-1.  I downloaded the latest version on #2 and ran opkg list-installed again.  Right now I'm guessing that installing via wget and rebooting doesn't update the installed listing as after installation of the latest cgminer the installed list still showed 3.12.0-1.  Since that has the lower loads it could be the more efficient miner.

I will install the latest cgminer on #1 and check back a little later today.
After updating cgminer, I think there is another way to ascertain the version than the one installed which was mentioned earlier in the thread. If you use the wget method, ensure you chmod+x the new cgminer before rebooting.

The poolside hashrate show #1 to be lower now, GUI 438.38, # 1 having the higher load (2.46) and hardware errors.  #1, cat5 connected, seems to have rebooted 22 minutes ago for no reason, now has a low hardware error count (of course only running 22 minutes) of 5, DIFF 449, DiffA 165394, DiffR 0, DiffS 0.

#2 poolside hashrate higher by 11.7%, GUI 440.28, wifi connected, lower load (1.39), DIFF 367, DiffA 6,986,294, DiffR 5505, DiffS 0.

#2 has new thermal paste applied yesterday.  I'll be picking more up today and might rip #1 apart to change.  Again, I'll download the cgminer to #1 and get back later with new stats.
I'd expect the miner connected via wifi to have a higher DiffR (i.e rejected shares) because of the higher latency inherent in a wifi connection, and your numbers thus far bear this out.
The cat5 connected unit, though showing a lower poolside hash-rate, should have a higher Accepted number (and / or DiffA) compared to the wifi one.
All in all, I would highly recomend updating to the latest cgminer though I have noticed some wierd things since I installed it on my S3's, but in any case, sort your bits and bobs out and get a more accurate picture.
1256  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 09, 2014, 05:12:14 PM
Do you know by chance how much of a load reduction is realized with the new CGMiner?  We've ordered a number of the new S3+ units and am wondering what PSU wattage would be needed for 1 unit pending they've rated it with the older version. I was planning on 500w PSUs for singles... Perhaps 400s would work?

Thanks!

Strato
Don't get in a muddle here. Decreasing CPU load does NOT decrease the power consumption of the unit to any significant level.
*** START PINCH OF SALT *** I could argue that it creates "freedom" for the CPU to process even more data thus increase power consumption. *** END PINCH OF SALT ***

I'd say stick to a 500 watt PSU or even better a 550 watt PSU for a single unit.
1257  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 09, 2014, 04:45:34 PM
May I ask what determines load?  I have two Antminers,

#1 using cat5 connection and its wifi connection disabled has:
loads of 2.70, 2.56, 2.51,
hashrate 441.03,
DIFF 354,
Fan/Temp 3000/41 & 2220/41 room
Temp/Humidity 83°/-%;

and #2 at some distance running via wifi has:
loads of 1.62, 1.47. 1.42,
hashrate 440.80,
DIFF 367,
Fan/Temp 2040/40 & 1860/39,
room Temp/Humidity 80°/39%.

So the first has loads 147% higher than the second?  Both S3's at stock frequency.
The biggest load is on an Antminer is cgminer, because it does all the work.
Installing the latest cgminer (which does NOT void your warranty) will, it has been shown, reduce the load by a significant margin.

I am actually surprised at your results, I would have thought the wifi connected antminer would have a higher load than the cat5 connected one, and that it would be reflected in the Diff that has been allocated by the pool, aka I would have expected the cat5 connected ant to have a higher Diff. Could you check your pool-side speeds and see if they reflect the GUI speeds? Also, what are the DiffR numbers for each? (PS. I'll expect a slightly higher DiffR on the wifi connected ant, assuming they are connected to the same pool)
1258  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [DIY] - Reward $100 | Antminer S1/S3 Blade on Raspberry Pi on: September 09, 2014, 04:35:41 PM
6 - 8 blades and its going to cost you $110 to do it. i have tested 6 but not 8

Spill the beans on this one then .... $110 seems a bit steep, does your mod entail scrapping the S1 control boards?

No but it does require additional hardware. I will spill the beans in a week or so

Any progress on this?

No considerable improvements from the start.
But it will when the S1 upgrade kits are available.
Forgive me, but that sounds like a load of trite! What on earth does the S3 upgrade kit (that you are waiting on) have that the existing S1 and S3 do not have?
I was actually holding out for your solution, but looks like this is real pie in the sky! Shame upon you.
1259  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: September 09, 2014, 07:51:33 AM
Heads up guys, if you update your CGMiner beyond what it comes with, bitmain will deny you any future RMA

Source: They denied several of my S1s back in the day when I applied Kano's fix.

Hi bobsag3,

Your above lines are not true, we sincerely support RMA for any tech issues except for overclocking.
We really appreciate Kano's work.
Thanks for clearing that up. It seemed a bit far-fetched and clearly bobsag3 has a history with Bitmain.

Crikey, there's no frequency! Never seen anything like that.
Also, you forgot to obscure your details....
Also, why don't you use:

stratum+tcp://stratum.btcguild.com:3333

as your mining URL as opposed to the http:// .... ?
