1261  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin address gap limit on: June 17, 2022, 11:17:36 AM
No, as long as you've used enough addresses then your future addresses will also be there (generally if you haven't clicked a button to add an address and haven't changed the gap limit, it's very likely you won't have to do that when restoring your wallet from the nmemonic either).
1262  Economy / Economics / Re: Russia is taking over Ukraine’s Internet on: June 17, 2022, 01:13:20 AM
The reading emails, texts and other communications has been a thing established in most countries afaik and isn't new. There's a chance the devices Ukrainians already have can remain encrypted though (android to android and iPhone to iPhone SMS communications are encrypted afaik).

As for the Internet being controlled and monitored by Russia, I imagine a lot of people already have tor or vpns configured that could circumvent some serveillance (these are probably more discreet than putting a satellite dish on the side of your house to interact with starlink - which I assume is required).
1263  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [List] Crypto exchanges with financial problems on: June 16, 2022, 07:11:41 PM
There is a difference between 'financial problems' and "the market has changed we don't need you anymore and the even larger profits are down (or negative)" so it's time to reduce headcount. As I posted elsewhere many tech businesses don't do layoffs when they are doing well. It's the keep them around just in case we need them mentality. In this bear market, you can't just keep some people.

It's probably closer to the idea of airports needing more staff in summer and retail needing more staff in autumn/winter.

It probably also depends where these layoffs are happening too, you probably won't be needing as many customer service representatives at this time but just enough of a workforce to keep the business flowing/functioning.

I didn't very much follow the whole Coinbase IPO  thing, but I guess not, so many people would want to buy stocks that are just dropping nonstop. People want to make profits, and this includes even those founders.
Well, I wouldn't say that Coinbase stock price is dropping non stop, but more that is following the crypto market which makes sense as their profit depends on the amount of people trading there. Chances are that once we enter bull market again their stock price will start rising again so yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if their founders are buying the dip.

I don't think they'll be thst in demand for the next bull market though. They publish financial information really far apart to actually look attractive to investors while they are making profits in a bull run. I think I've said before that investing in coinbase is essentially speculating on an asset already being speculated on. They also don't seem to be doing much to innovate either and are quite a basic exchange.

There's the other side to this though that their stock might do like tesco did in the UK (they essentially made huge profits during the pandemic and gave a lot of that money away to their share holders paying a dividend yield of over 30%). Some other companies I've seen in the past have paid a dividend yield of 10% of profits regardless of how much their stock is actually worth (and in the European market, that's often 10-20% of the stock's value). I'm keeping quiet about buybacks because I don't think they're as useful
1264  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase Learn And Earn on: June 16, 2022, 06:35:28 PM
My take on the Coinbase Learn and Earn is that it is a total scam...  They pay the "earn" part out as taxable income last I checked, and they give you $3 in a (usually worthless) currency.  So right off the bat you're on the hook for nearly $1 in taxes.  Then, they charge you something like $2 in fees if you want to sell it.

Ohhhhh I just checked it again and you're right. When I did my first few it paid ~$8, now it looks like it pays anywhere from $1-3 for each coin and they're going to be expensive to sell on normal coinbase (and probably don't all have support on Pro) - as on you'll probably pay half in fees and the spread.
1265  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase Learn And Earn on: June 16, 2022, 05:47:12 PM
I think it changes based on the coins coinbase wants to market so you don't have to do anything to get more, just click on them when they're available.

The tokens you get are yours so yes you can trade with them.
1266  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best way to store ledger nano 24 words seed phrase. on: June 16, 2022, 04:20:46 PM
I've memorized the password. it's some words that I won't forget.

I wouldn't trust this. I memorised one of my mnemonics and spent about a year trying to recite past the 4th word in my head - I had it written down but wanted to see if I could remember it and I did eventually but it's not the safest way to go about things (the paper was fairly far away and the pandemic had just started when I initially misremembered it).

Notepad from microsoft?

Yeah. The chance your computer memorised that is tiny and if you don't use Microsoft word often, your autosave file could be saved for a while (you might want to Google your version of word and see if it stores temporary files you could delete - although even if you do that your drive might not be completely clear of them in a worst case scenario). Realistically the threat would be reduced if you saved the blank document to your USB stick before adding the mnemonic.
1267  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best way to store ledger nano 24 words seed phrase. on: June 16, 2022, 01:13:16 PM
My concern would be how you're storing your password once you've put these 3 USB sticks somewhere. If you're not going to access them for a while, I don't think you'll do well relying on memory.

You might've been better off using notepad for this since it won't have anything that remembers the words you typed for its dictionary. It is unlikely anything detectable has been saved and if you use word a lot it might have already relearnt some of those words enough times and removed their original meaning.
1268  Other / Off-topic / Re: Sad news for Telegram users on: June 16, 2022, 01:03:31 PM
Telegram does not want to walk the same path as other companies. They want revenue from users instead of advertising agencies.

That sounds a lot like Discord. You can search up Discord nitro if you want to know more. I think the main differences are things like: being able to use different channel emojis in other channels, being able to have a different profile picture on your user account for each channel/"server" and better streaming quality - I doubt any of those really matter that much and the last one requires reliable internet upload speeds which most people won't have anyway..

If paid subscription is being introduced in Telegram, will it also be introduced in WhatsApp this time? Can you see the ad there?

WhatsApp is very basic compared with telegram so no.
1269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitfinex hack case against Crocodile of Wall Street delayed to August 2nd on: June 16, 2022, 12:43:06 PM
What's going on with the plea bargain if they've recovered all the Bitcoins it isn't needed. I'm confused is Bitfinex getting back all 119,754 bitcoin worth Billions or just $71 million?

I'm guessing they'll probably be criminally convicted for the hack to provide some sort of punishment for that considering they held the funds for so long before they were returned... It seems strange that wasn't part of the initial deal for a plea bargain if they held on to the funds and used those as a negotiating tool (though that might not have worked - withholding 10% though might).
1270  Economy / Economics / Re: Apple wants to replace all passwords with biometrics on: June 16, 2022, 01:44:32 AM
I wonder how they plan to make the system secure against malware and similar attacks. I'd assume maybe a separate chip would be the best way to go with this but that might eat into their profits so they'll probably find a way that's less secure but still robust against attackers (eg a space away from where a normal user or app would be able to access).

I'd be surprised if this hasn't already been attempted or already been done with this already, I think this technology could be made more secure if an nfc card was also used to offer an extra key to decrypt the password database (eg the main encryption key as you won't get much with that alone - they can also likely already be made more secure as bank cards have already had to be).
1271  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is the crash in bitcoin price a threat to forum existence? on: June 15, 2022, 10:56:17 PM
I think the forum and bitcoin were both started as hobbyistic endeavours so the forum will live on as well as bitcoin will if something catastrophic were to happen to the price of the crypto market.

It seemed to have a stronger, perhaps smaller community when I joined here back when bitcoin was vauled at around $200. Everything seemed quite small back then though.

The forum itself probably costs as much to run as it receives in views/hits - of fewer people access the site it'll probably be a lot easier and cheaper to run. If the forum does disappear, there are a few user generated sites that store informstion for it and archive sites that used to parse the whole forum on a daily basis (I think it's done once a month now - on archive.org - but I've not checked recently).
1272  Other / Meta / Re: Warning in PM, is this a new feature? on: June 15, 2022, 03:29:02 PM
I think it's been around for a few years now and I assume it's used where suspicious link removed might've been before (for more established users - but this is just my guess).

Suspicious link removed just taints any links that aren't well recognised or thing known to be bad.
1273  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling Problem, Is it Possible to be a Thing of the Past? on: June 15, 2022, 01:20:28 PM
A global system might be unachievable on its own as the person will probably have to link all their gambling accounts in one website and that's probably how it would be circumvented (eg just making new accounts).

Addiction can be treated through regular counseling. No measure of exclusion will work unless it is a forced one.

Yeah it can be treated much better by counselling as a counsellor will able to replace it with an activity the person might consider more fulfilling than gambling too which might help(/forcibly) distract them while they try to move away from it.

1274  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who will be Russia's next market target?? on: June 15, 2022, 01:08:00 PM
I assumed the Asian, South American and African markets were large enough to be able to purchase a lot of Russian oil or Russia might be able to store it and use it for things more locally (eg manufacturing of things like cars).

I think the socioeconomics of Russia before any of this didn't look very attractive though and it's quite obvious to see (possibly for the Russian military too) that a lot of former soviet countries have done much better out of being away from Russia than their country has (not sure about other issues but I remember healthcare being documented a few years ago in Russia as being quite inaccessible).
1275  Economy / Speculation / Re: $13,000 is quite possible this week on: June 14, 2022, 04:10:02 PM

But whales are confuse for dumping more because they know Bitcoin has more value and it is undervalue around $13k. So more dumping means draining their bags so quickly. People are really hungry for Bitcoin in new inflationary era.
Not sure if you can categorized whales as the one who are dumping right now. They have a lot bag full of bitcoin so for me it doesn't make sense to dump them at all. On the contrary, whales are going to buy tons and shitloads of BTC because it is cheap. If there are people who are dumping right now, it is those who have panic and most likely, newbies or investors who don't have experienced seeing this kind of crash.

Actively trading whales will likely dump when the price dumps because it makes sense too. Most assets don't normally do a small sell off and recover from it - a lot take 2 or 3 legs to do it.

Also if you sell your crypto, you're provided liquidity from the rest of the market and if you can put a buy order below where you sold and have it filled you end up with more crypto.

If you sold 100 btc at $25k and bought back at $21k (if there was enough liquidity) then you'll be able to buy 120btc or have $400k left to withdraw after buying back your btc. It is a risky strategy but they might not care anyway if they're just waiting for a reason to leave with their funds.
1276  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Papertrading tradingview unit represent what? on: June 14, 2022, 03:18:53 PM
Why wouldn't you expect it to be $, I think I remember it being that (but I'm not too sure).

If so, you're buying unit/unit price if you want to work out how much btc that is.
1277  Economy / Economics / Re: World Bank slashes global growth forecast to 2.9% on: June 13, 2022, 08:37:00 PM
A growth of 2.6% is still a growth, it's better than not having one at all or having a shrink...

Stagflation has happened quite a few times before (or at least fairly intense recessions). There's a good chance that if we see one it won't last as long as one preciously mightve due to greater global connectivity (through systems like the Internet) and the evident rise of future technology that's still being produced and conceptualised and being adopted where it's useful. Stagflation in the past had been worsened by not having these kinds of offerings at the time (eg the 1850s [Europe] 1870s [US]).
1278  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto market capitalization now well under $1T on: June 13, 2022, 08:26:54 PM
The same looks to be true for a lot of stocks now though too at a similar time to bitcoin (and most assets except some fiat and food).

Market cap is fairly meaningless on a scope of determining interest in assets though (unless you're expecting people not to hold them - I don't think many in the community participate in selling crashes and buying the ups at the exact times they happen/are at their worst especially if they've been here a while).
1279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Binance gives more reasons to remain decentralized with bitcoin on: June 13, 2022, 04:43:01 PM
Yeah they've done it quite a lot before and they might've been responding late to the block that took about an hour to be mined this morning (afaik it took that long - as well as increased withdrawals from holders and dip buyers).

It might come from funds being less accessible from cold wallets too but I'm not too sure how likely that'd be - especially since cz probably has a reserve of their own somewhere.
1280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What exactly do we call this feeling of ‘to hold to zero’ or ‘sell at loss’? on: June 13, 2022, 04:20:31 PM
I’ve been staring at my portfolio since morning, going through my head is to hold to zero or sell at loss? Do you think this is the end for Bitcoin or we’ll reach a new ATH after this downsize?

I think, HODL of course, because it's not the first time all crypto market is dumping like this...

Breaking the zones we did yesterday felt a lot like the (start of the) drop from 6k to 2.9k we did back in 2018 - this is probably a reflection in the strength of crypto but is still likely disappointing for new investors.

If you're going to get obsessed with the prices of things, you're definitely better off holding.

If you've got an extremely strong level of self control and a good amount of confidence in crypto only then would I consider selling and moving funds out for a short time (perhaps into a diversified equity fund).

Let this be a lesson to all that claim btc is a store of value.
Store of Value don't fall off a cliff like btc.

By this logic nothing is a store of value (gold fell off a cliff around the same time, oil did similar at the start of the pandemic and might still be doing in some cases).
