1461  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Vertical miner on: July 26, 2016, 10:26:59 AM
Can you post a picture or two of your setup?
I'm not sure what you mean by vertically.
The miners are suspended in the air and not touching the ground so you have a fan sitting below it?

(But any idea that gets your miners running cooler and hashing higher sounds like a good thing!)
1462  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What about the idea of a bitcoin shop in big cities? on: July 26, 2016, 10:23:50 AM
It would be much easier to make Bitcoin ATMs and convert to cash before paying.
BTC will probably stay an online currency for now.
Most people aren't willing to ship the goods until they get some transaction confirmations, which is only appropriate for the internet right now.
1463  Economy / Economics / Re: Trump Presidency - boom for bitcoin? on: July 25, 2016, 08:18:30 PM
Unless one of the candidates passes some law in relation to BTC I don't think it really matters who wins.
I don't think either candidate winning will cause the dollar to change value much.
And even if it did, would it effect Bitcoin price?

I know some people point to Brexit as being one of the reasons BTC increased in price,
but its very hard to say since the reward got cut in half at the same time...
1464  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to encrypt so outcome will look a certain way? on: July 25, 2016, 06:56:39 PM
Yeah this sounds like some sort of ciphertext.
You would have to create it yourself, since you have a very specific outcome that you want, but it wouldn't be too hard to come up with a basic cipher.

I can think about this more when I get home later, since Im only on a quick break at work.

1465  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: An Article Claims BIG Investors Now Buy the Bulk of BTC on: July 25, 2016, 03:07:35 PM
The question is, how are big investors moving a lot of coins without it showing up?
Do you think someone is passing over the keys to accounts so they can move the coins without it showing up in a transaction?

If whales were moving a lot of coins, what methods would they use? Because it would be against their interests for people to see them moving so much BTC publicly.
(Sure you could divide the coins between addresses, but if you moved 10,000 coins, for instance, would you really do 1,000 transactions for 10 coins each to hide your move?)

Okay nevermind I'm watching the transactions in realtime and you can clearly see transactions of 200, 300 or more BTC at a time.

Heres a huge transfer
1466  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase now supports Etherium; Is this a threat to Bitcoin dominance on: July 25, 2016, 02:27:04 PM
Not really. Although Coinbase does a ton of transactions via its platform everyday, unless the merchant is actually accepting ETH, which I haven't seen that much of, bitcoin will still be the dominant coin. As slim as bitcoin adoption is, ETH adoption is arguably worse.  Coinbase may increase the trading volume on ETH a bit, but that's all.

Exactly.
Unless someone actually starts taking payments in ETH, it will just be another pump and dump scheme.
If any website does start taking payments, someone stands to make a lot of money.
For now the only ones getting rich are the owners of the exchanges.
1467  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bear market ended. Now going to $500 on: July 25, 2016, 02:19:07 PM

What matters is whether people are using bitcoin, and more than ever, they are. Also compared to the same time a year ago, the average number of daily transactions has more than doubled. A lot of this usage makes the price of bitcoin to rise.

I agree.
The thing that is going to drive the price now is usage.
We need more sites like Overstock.com to start accepting BTC.
If popular sites start accepting it as a form of payment, the price could jump much higher.

Mining difficulty, the rewarding halving, etc will only drive the price so much.
Keeping an eye on daily transactions is a good measure I had not thought about before.
1468  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-07-25] German Media Falsely Links Bitcoin and Darknet To Munich Shooting on: July 25, 2016, 01:57:05 PM
I've seen several articles mention the gun was bought on the darknet, but none of them actually mentioned Bitcoin.
It will be interesting to see in the coming days what gets reported, but none of the stories I saw even said "Bitcoin" once.

(While most of us would assume Bitcoin was used, the average person probably wouldn't make that connection.)
1469  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: About Starting in mining on: July 25, 2016, 01:27:53 PM
If your electricity is really 0.01 for each kwh, I would probably buy some mining gear.
Buy a couple Antminer S9 or see if you can get a bunch of used S7 from some forum members.
(I believe even the S7 are still profitable if you pay 0.05 or lower)

Confirm your electricity costs don't increase as you use more energy.
For example, where I live, you get a lower rate at first, then when you go above a certain limit, the cost increases.
1470  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is CHINA CONTROLLING Bitcoin? on: July 25, 2016, 12:02:24 PM
China also makes most of the ASIC miners, which are paid for in BTC.
Which means there are some Chinese manufacturing companies who hold a ton of Bitcoin.
It would be great to see some competition in the ASIC market, but just like with most things, most people will not be able to match the production costs of making the chips in China.
Labor and electricity is so cheap, regulations are not strict, etc.
China is the perfect place for anything related to Bitcoins, so they naturally have an advantage.
1471  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Protect your node from spies and DDoS - Updated blacklist on: July 25, 2016, 11:56:11 AM
Yeah blocking AWS server ranges is probably a good idea then.
Unfortunately tons of people use them for nefarious purposes.
There are so many guides on hackforums about using AWS for bad things any script kiddie can set one up and use it for ill purposes. Sad
1472  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will reach $1000 again or not ? on: July 25, 2016, 10:54:59 AM
Next halving is in approximately four years.
If people are still using BTC as one of the main forms of cryptocurrency I'm sure it would be at $1000 by then.
Hopefully if other coins come into use Bitcoin doesn't fall out of favor.
1473  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Protect your node from spies and DDoS - Updated blacklist on: July 25, 2016, 10:49:15 AM
Anyone have any theories as to who is doing this or what they would have to gain from it?
It seems like a lot of work for nothing.
So unless someone really has a vendetta against a specific node operator, or really hates the idea of Bitcoin, I can't see why anyone would waste their time trying to attack nodes.
1474  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to send BTC to 10 people and only pay transaction fee once on: July 25, 2016, 10:39:42 AM
I think Xapo is one of the companies that is very strict.
So they may close your account if they see you sending to gambling sites, and you might have to verify your identity
(Probably similar to Coinbase)
If you are doing nothing wrong then you should be fine.
1475  Other / Meta / Re: Have you ever clicked on a link in someone's signature? on: July 25, 2016, 04:30:00 AM
There are a couple members who I really trust who have signatures that I have clicked.
But yeah for the most part I google a site and then follow the link. Its just good security practice.
I do the same thing with emails. I never open anything in any email unless I speak to someone and they tell me they sent me a document etc.
1476  Economy / Speculation / Re: Critical Levels - EW analysis on: July 24, 2016, 09:24:57 PM
Quick question for you guys about the books mentioned-
are any of these appropriate for a beginner, or is there some other resource I should start with?

Im interested in learning about markets, trading, and reading these waves, but I don't have much more than a basic understanding of how the graphs work.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
1477  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ThrowBack] from $27 to $886,000 on: July 24, 2016, 09:00:11 PM
Talking with someone I met a few weeks ago and Bitcoin came up, he mentioned that years ago he had bought about 1,000 bitcoin for $1 each.
He said he had sold some of them but still had about half, so thats 500 BTC X $650 = $325,000
I have no way to verify that he actually has that many coins, but he knows a lot about computers, programming etc and I don't think he has any reason to lie.
1478  Economy / Speculation / Re: The price drop on: July 24, 2016, 06:59:09 PM
Panic kicking in nicely again. It's getting harder and harder to suppress the truth about this failing coin.

You're joking right?
There is only one coin can you use to buy Steam games, items on Overstock.com, fund accounts on several major poker sites, and tons of illegal goods on the darknet markets.
In what way is Bitcoin failing?
1479  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Coinbase NOT Regulated - No reply to Account Closure - Is Coinbase a scam? on: July 24, 2016, 05:51:50 PM
I was reading some poker forums today and someone mentioned they were warned by Coinbase for sending payments to a poker site.
Is there any chance OP was using Coinbase account to send to gambling sites?

(If we even hear from OP again, since it seems like he stopped responding to this thread.)
1480  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for a Bitcoin wallet on: July 24, 2016, 05:01:40 PM
I have just installed electrum and I have copied the phrase and entered a pin, this was not too much of a problem as I appreciate security of the wallet. It is currently generating the wallet addresses and has been on this for a while.

I just edited my post to say that it took a long time when I first installed,
but I also think this is because my phone is old.
(3-4 years is a long time for a smartphone to be outdated)
