1521  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: October 06, 2014, 11:01:25 AM
Beautiful well built hardware is great but it does no good if btc price keeps falling and difficulty keeps going up. How good is a miner if BTC goes sub $100 and it costs more to power the thing than it earns.  Cry

Miners need to shut down but as long as people speculate that BTC will rise in the future they will continue to mine at a loss today.

I am not sure they will continue to mine.  It is more profitable to switch off older equipment and buy bitcoin than spend electricity at loss making J/BTC cost basis.

Its normal at any given time that people will be switching off previous gen equipment as newer more electrically efficient equipment pushes old hardware below electrical breakeven with sunk cost economics (ie even losing money based on electrical cost, ignoring purchase cost).

Same thing happened to CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs... now its the turn of old gen ASICs.

Once they adapt difficulty will flatten or even fall, sell pressure will relieve and price will rise.  Flatter difficulty will help also because it extends equipment life-time which makes planning easier.

Thats what I think anyway.

Adam

I suspect anything using more than 1.5w/GH is turning of at this point.
1522  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: STOP BUYING MINING HARDWARE on: October 04, 2014, 03:39:08 PM
this thread is silly. mining can be profitable for certain people, but not everyone.

I started mining this time last year with a (~15BTC, paid in usd) bitfury, and shortly after Batch 1 (4.25) and Batch 2 (4.75) Antminer S1 products. They helped raise the capital to continue expansion.

now I have a small farm where the $2000 costs of wiring in 20kW, power supplies, PDUs, shelving, and power costs have been paid for entirely by the resale of hardware to $CAD, and I am currently running 8TH with roughly 20/24BTC from the initial hardware costs held in savings wallets.

at the current BTC prices and hardware prices though, it would be difficult for most equiment to return a profit unless your costs (power, space, and personal time) are under $0.10/kwh, unless you make some fairly liberal calculations about future BTC value and difficulty increases.

IMO difficulty is slowing down (remember the 8% and 3% only a few weeks ago), and with the low prices I think we could see a relative plateau very soon, with only 4-8%/jump until prices increase
1523  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [GUIDE] BitFury Miner Support/Tuning on: October 04, 2014, 02:03:12 PM
so one of my boards recently stopped working (slot 3, I have other boards in slots 1,2 5,6 & 9,10) - I tried reseating it several times and tried it in other slots (slot 6 and slot 13) with no effect. no hashrate, no heat, no detection in the stats.log file.

looking at it theres no visible problem. a bit of dust had accumulated between the inductor and the TPS53355 possibly (but not likely) shorting 2-3 of the pins ont he upper side of the chip. I dont think this is the problem, but its theonly lead i have

any easy troubleshooting techniques?  I have a spare TPS53355 chip I could actually drop in if that is the issue, but i dont have the fine-point soldering skils to do that myself. (contracting out that task might work, but not sure what to look for in the yellowpages (Toronto, Ontario) to find someone capable of doing it.)

any ideas? I did not have a miultimeter handy at the time so no voltage info yet. I might have to wire up a 12V/GND to the board to check at home

Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your H-Card. I own a lot of these cards and I have at least 16 dead H-cards between all my rigs that I'd like to get them up and running. I did once observe one H-Card pop and I saw some smoke and definitely could identify the electrical burn smell. I determine the 30 amp fuse on the board was no longer allowing current to go through so I desoldered it and replaced it with another fuse. Unfortunately that board no longer works and the board looks completely fine. The other 15 or so defective boards between my other units also look good but don't hash.

Did you hot plug your cards? If yes the first and last chips comms are destroyed. you need to bypass them and your cards should hash again with 14chips.

i dont think i ever hotplugged, but i havent tried putting the bad card back in for months now since its at home and the bitfury is a 40min drive away, for only ~33GH if it worked magically.

there was no visible issue on the board, but i alcohol cleaned some of the dusty and greasy components
1524  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: 24" PCI-E cables with 16AWG wires and 6" 18awg splitters - great for server PSU on: October 04, 2014, 01:55:59 PM
Klondike is the man, I just got another box from him!  He is a man of his word, I have sent him a little over 2 BTC for this last batch (without using escrow) and he always delivers a very high quality product.  I believe he has the best prices on cables and they are very high quality.  Even the smaller gauge splitters can handle about 250 watts per PCI-E connector without any significant heating up.  I imagine you could put a decent amount more than 250 watts per PCI-E cable, but I don't have any equipment that asks for that much power per PCI-E cable.

He always hooks me up, thank you very much Klondike!

thanks for the feedback!

I still have a few cables in stock, and expect a large delivery of cables AND SPLITTERS sometime in the next 5-10 days.
1525  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: October 04, 2014, 01:48:22 PM
thanks atledenin but that error only came up after the miner rebooted so the ssh connection was lost. I did rename the cgminer file back but the miner didnt start mining again. I ended up having to reflash back to factory settings and inputting my details in again. oh well at least it's mining again Smiley but with old cgminer Sad

You just missed a step is all. Step 4 below.  After you use wget to download cgminer, you have to change the permissions to allow execute.  The permission denied error is because there is no permission to execute the command.

   1. cd /usr/bin
   2. mv cgminer cgminer.bak
   3. wget http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/antminer/s3/4.6.0-140908/cgminer
   4. chmod +x cgminer
   5. Reboot

when in doubt, sudo.
1526  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 Discussion and Support Thread on: October 03, 2014, 01:44:40 AM
Hi, I have very bad experience with Antminer S4 B1. I ordered 10 psc of S4. Yesterday I received the shipment. I have prepared new electricity (3x 240V 32Amps) and new wiring for more power. Unfortunately, one of them immediately after turning on started stink and smoke. I turned it off. I tried to turn it on one more time but it happened again. I wrote Bitmain but still I have no answer.

Than I started to set up other nine miners. Some miners had set up DHCP some Static IP 192.168.1.99, but it was no problem. When I set up all nine miners I checked hashrate on displays and all miners have hashrate >2TH/s. After one hour I checked hashrate on ELIGIUS pool and I expected higher hashrate then 18TH/s. But I saw only 11TH/s in peak and after next hour the hashrate was only 7TH/s.

I moved miners to Slush pool, create one worker per miner and finally hashrates was from 50GH to 1600GH.

The second issiu that I am not very happy are letters (x) in ASIC status. Six of nine miners have 3-5 (x) in ASIC status. Miners are with basic setting, no overclock with temperatures from 41 to 45°C.

I red that more people have the same problem. Can you help me? Do you have any idea to solve the problem? ...or Bitmains want to be rich quickly and produce low-quality devices.

I am very disgusted with this situation.

pictures? I see you have no prior posts on the site, interested in your setup
1527  Economy / Auctions / Re: AUCTION: 3 x AMT 1.25ths 4u RackMount Miner Auction on: October 02, 2014, 07:12:45 PM
Bitpop and anyone else who was bidded in this auction or had bad experience with AMT_miners:  Do what i did, and leave a negative trust rating for them. It will help steer people away in the future
They got really posts when I posted this, and never had a solution other than sell me the winning price 3weeks after the auction ended, or to put some asicminer tubes in a case for more cost that it was to order tubes directly myself.

Leave these guys negative trust. Bunch of failed promises and no spine to back up what they say
1528  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 Discussion and Support Thread on: October 02, 2014, 01:12:36 AM
Testing 225MHz @ 0.725v right now. Power draw = 1525w

What is the hashrate? It's advertised as 1380w at the wall at 2000GH/s.

* Hash Rate: 2,000GH/s guaranteed
* Power Efficiency: 0.69Watt/GH/s at the wall

200MHz/0.0725v(stock): 2010GH/s @ 1305w = 0.65Watt/GH/s

225MHz/0.0725v: 2243GH/s @ 1505w = 0.67Watt/GH/s

That's using Eligius. Nicehash doesn't work for shit, was only getting about 1650GH while overclocked. I'll post more as I test, likely tomorrow.

Edit: Seems like Eligius' stats are messed up? Hashrate average over the last 256 seconds is only 48GH/s

Edit 2: I'm trying to find a pool that reports hashrate properly, as Eligius isn't. For some reason the miner won't connect to BTCGuild...  Huh Pool is showing up as dead.

eligius is fine for me right now.

thats a nice 10% overclock, any signs its too much for the psu? 1505W at the wall with ~89% efficiency near peak power = 1350W from the PSU
1529  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] DeltaMining ASIC Miners [Home-Friendly][NO pre-orders][Based in Canada] on: October 01, 2014, 11:13:03 AM
DeltaMining confirmed that they will be using zeusminer chips and PCBs, assembled into compact and quiet cases for the home user, but still ~2months out from Batch 1 release.

@toptek - i just find the "I dont even/I cant even" phrase hilarious, particularly if they "literally". I've personally never had any problems with 2,4,6,8,etc.

perhaps with rockminer and zuesminer teaming up now, it will open up DeltaMining to be able to build custom devices for both scrypt and SHA256

Can i ask you what you think about that cheaper product: https://buy.hardwarewallet.com/hw1shop/#shop
I was buyed Trezor and i'm very happy, but today i saw that decision and i think that this will reflect to your sales becouse of the price.Do ypu think that Trezor is more secured than that piece hardware? Please answer, becouse i try to advertise your product, but peoples look the price on the first time.
Thank you.
If you think that this is not for your thread -just delete it.

it seems to achieve the same thing, but i see a few shortcomings:
1) no screen to verify transactions. If the PC fed it incorrect payment info it would sign it - whereas a trezor requires you to confirm the address and amount shown on its screen and click the OK button
2) I dont see any PIN protection for payments
3) I dont see any password capabilities, or the capability to run multiple totally seperate wallets on it like the trezor can (using a different pw for each)

I have one of these and tested it extensively with electrum.

1.) It has no screen but offers a "hardened mode" which requires you to plug it into another computer (or the same one). It will emulate a keyboard and tell you the transaction info and a one-time PIN which you'll have to enter after re-plugging again into the main computer with the wallet. It's way less elegant than trezor in this regard, but this protects against malware sneaking in attackers address.

2.) The devices requires the user to enter a PIN. If entered wrongly 3 times, device will delete wallet info.

3.) Correct. No "plausible deniability" possible like with trezor. You have one wallet and that only has one account (with unlimited number of addresses, though). I think it's bip32 limited to 1 account.

For the price it offers quite good security. It's a little more cumbersome to use securely than the trezor because of the lacking display (you need a second computer). Also: the tech is closed-source (smart card), so you have to have some additional trust there. All in all a good low cost alternative, though, I would say.

sorry for OT, thanks btchip for linking the thread above.

1) thats insane. If i want to send a transaction with the same security as a trezor I need to purchase a second computer , then boot it up everytime i want to send a transaction. no thanks.
2) again, this seems like a silly method. trezor's exponentially-increasing time to retry your pin combo is a much better idea. how can you back up and restore your wallet info on these things?

the closed-source hardware is the cherry on top - that device needs some serious improvement and is currently nowhere near the ease and reliability of a trezor

lol bitcoin newsfeed, you used to be more sharp in your trolling. so are you assuming that other companies dont have shareholders maybe? rofl. ^^

edit: you are in a bad position, we get it. but please do think twice before posting. you are not helping anyone, and especially not yourself.

Nah, I am out from this garbage Chinese cheddar for several weeks now, if not month. What was enough was enough. Lot of red flags everywhere around here. It's good to know when to stop loss, but still I should do this earlier, lesson learned. Looking at orderbook and exchange rate now, I am glad that I had opportunity to sell back then, now it would not be possible for me to get rid off all shares. Feeling sorry for bagholders who still have shares left. What can I say, I hate my decision to invest here (over 90% loss in BTC, little profit in EUR) and hate ASICminer too, one man's dream is destroyed.

sounds like you invested at the peak of hype. best to sell your position now while bitcoin is in a slump.

I live in Toronto, and would love to visit these guys to see what they are up to and perhaps bring back some 3rd party info to the forums. Email sent.

Looks like they are building a scryptminer (40MHash/180W) as their first project, based on chips (and possibly PCBs?) of another manufacturer to limit startup capital

Anyone able to find a power cord to use with these? Bitmain says to use one rated for no less than 16A, but I seem to be having trouble finding one to meet those specs.

This one is rated at 125v x 15A so it's over 1,800watts, should work at standard 115v x 16A then.  If you're looking for an extension cord.  Doesn't it come with the power cord?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0061306C2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If not, then this will probably work.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008DW616O?psc=1

Nope, it doesn't come with a power cord. But thanks for pointing these out!

I wonder why BITMAINTECH is sending S4 without the power cord.

Few reasons
1) there's a wide variety of cord standards worldwide, especially in europe.
2) a lot of people are plugging to PDUS and other specialty wiring, so a cord offers no benefit
3) a cord costs $2-10 depending on type, plus a slight increase in shipping weight. Also makes the package slightly bigger.

I'm fine with no cord, since i plug to a 208v C14, and not the typical 115v north American plug.

ALSO - 15a at 125v is not equal to 16a at 115v. 15a is 15a, and even then you need to have some headroom for 24/7 load. Expect that 1400w will likely trip most 15a breakers, and use a 20a circuit to be safe
1537  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: September 30, 2014, 05:47:39 PM
Bitmain promised to update their firmware for all models many weeks ago, but still have not done so.
Bitmain also promised to provide a way of upgrade S2 to 1.8 or 2 Th. It's necessary to keep their word...

Doesn't make sense to upgrade a machine that is still profitable at 1w/gh.   They even gave a coupon to make up for it.

Maybe there will be upgrade kit in a few more months for 2th/1kw, but if you took the current s4 design and undervolt ed it to 0.5w/ghit would probably only be ~1.4th

An upgrade kit for 2th in the s2 would probably cost 2-2.2btc right now since it would require many more chips than the s4 uses

still dreaming about Ken coming through with the goods?

read this...

http://www.coindesk.com/us-government-shuts-embattled-mining-firm-butterfly-labs/

AMC/VMC  has a far worse record than butterfly labs and one of THE worst records in the industry.. IMHO its only a matter of time..
VMC likely only had a handful of customers though and even though they acted sketchy selling the HF boards at least most people seemed to get them even if it was late. Not sure how many were left from the original preorders. Even if they all complained, the FTC received thousands of complaints from different sources (their number, not mine).

The majority of the scam here is in AMC, which isn't really the FTC. You need to continue petitioning the SEC and Missouri SoS to get him sent away for securities fraud.

While one might argue the toss on how bright your average ActM shareholder is, one thing is for sure, they have enough common sense to not follow through with your instruction.  Take the poll result on a sister thread and see how little appetite people have for sharing their personal details with the US Gov, given their involvement in Bitcoin.  Blahgraphics tried and failed to rally the support for his campaign/vendetta against Ken.  Move along, there's nothing to see here.   Cheesy

its a bit ironic that youre still out here defending them isnt it?
1539  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: September 30, 2014, 11:11:00 AM
Can anyone tell me how to make an SP10 run relatively quiet? I read a few things about running them down at 1000w, is that safe. Even if its just at 1Th/s I am fine with that. What is your advice?

lol @ people taking noise into consideration when buying mining equipment.

If you have to care about that, just buy btc directly, mining is not for your type.

I am running 6TH worth of rk-boxes, antminers S2/S3, and BTCgarden units, and the combined volume is about half of my SP10 running at 50% fans.

mining quietly is not difficult, the BTCgarden units are the quietest by far, basically no louder than the EVGA 1300 powering them. The SP10 is a monstrosity in terms of noise, and should never be put inside a building within earshot of people
