1581  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin all time high on: February 26, 2013, 09:55:14 PM
If you convert the Mt.Gox GBP high to USD then the ATH has been passed Smiley
We are in ATH :-) (daily, weekly, monthly volume in USD/BTC) but there were 3 transacions (1,5+ BTC in total) at 31.90+ :-) traded on MtGox. (this is last ATH)

What was the daily average high in June 2011? I am pretty sure we passed that already, that peak was not very deep.
1582  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: France Is Planning To Prohibit Cash Payments Over €1,000 on: February 26, 2013, 09:05:10 PM
Because bitcoins act sorta like cash, is it illegal to make a bitcoin transaction over the threshold as well?

How do they possibly think they will be able to police this? Cash transactions are untraceable, how is making a law going to make them any more traceable?

Newsflash: Lawbreakers break laws.

You're correct. This is inane.

When I first read your reply I thought you said "Lawmakers break laws." How are all the lawmakers going to get their bribes if cash is outlawed?
1583  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: February 26, 2013, 06:19:28 PM

Different question. I've granted 0.6 BTC trust to bitstamp and hold 0.3 BTC/bitstamp. I was fooling around and dropped my trust to bitstamp from 0.6 BTC to 0.2. My account showed that I still held 0.3 BTC/bitstamp, exceeding my trust limit. Shouldn't lowering trust levels below existing IOUs owned have triggered some process whereby 0.1 BTC/bitstamp was immediately returned to bitstamp and converted into BTC, thereby bringing my balance in line with trust granted?

As I understand, lowering your trust does not trigger any money movement. Bitstamp will no longer be able to send you IOUs, and nobody else will be able to give you their IOUs either. The next time you send anybody BTC, the Bitstamp BTC will be sent, if they trust Bitstamp.
1584  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin all time high on: February 26, 2013, 06:11:48 PM
In my opinion, saying its gonna be a bitcoin all time high based upon the value compared to USD only, is pretty narrow minded. We should compare it to a bag of currency.

Maybe we could check the all-time high with a couple other currencies and see if there is any difference?

If you measure in silver, the all-time high has already been surpassed.
1585  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why does the price appear to be so stable lately? on: February 26, 2013, 06:07:53 PM
speculation?

The price looks stable because your computer froze, and the price is no longer updating? Or maybe you are on crack and since the rest of the world is spinning it makes all the recent price changes look steady? Really, I wouldn't call the price stable until it goes a couple days without going up or down by more than a percent or two.
1586  Economy / Securities / Re: Bitcoin Company Valuation on: February 26, 2013, 05:10:19 PM
With the recent IPO of ZIGGAP, I was wonder how to Value a company when making an IPO.

Are most companies using a P/E Ratio?

Or just selling for as much as they could get?

SatoshiDice is the only company I remember actually stating their expected P/E value when doing an IPO. But the P/E is just a number which anybody can calculate from the price and earnings. If a company wants you to invest in them, they should provide financial numbers like these. I see many of the IPOs around here do not provide such numbers, so there is no way to value them.

I just looked at ZipGap, and it looks like they are way overvalued. From the data they provide, I calculate something like a P/E of 41. (This is extrapolating from their less than a month earnings, so they apparently think they will grow fast.)
1587  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: February 26, 2013, 03:01:53 AM

Just to try things out, I sent you a tiny amount of USD, even though I have no USD balance. I now have a tiny negative USD balance. I think the only place you could send that would be to Tino Y, as he is the only other person who trusts me so far, or back to me.

When you send some USD or BTC, do you get to choose who's debt is sent, or does the program pick for you? What happens if you remove the trust you have extended to me? (maybe you could try that?) If you did remove the trust from me, would my IOU's be preferentially sent to people who have multiple choices? (Like if Tino trusts me and BitStamp, and you have USD from me and BitStamp, which USD gets sent?)

I tried to send the USD on to Timo Y (rG8VFQPaJB2gNjx29Et1wKUJettQP1eLmk) but it says

No path found!

Also, did you trust me with .01 BTC? I see a -0.01 for BTC by your name.

Yes, I trusted you .01BTC, so the trust axis in BTC goes from -.01 to 0 on your page.

Aha, I see the problem! Timo has trusted me a small amount of BTC, so the USD from me which you have cannot be sent to him.
1588  Economy / Speculation / Re: Afraid to miss the market crash? on: February 25, 2013, 10:27:02 PM
Looking at past price rises, the price rises steadily and then goes up increasingly fast just before the pop. Since we have been rising pretty steadily the past few weeks, I would not start worrying about a popping bubble until the rate of increase starts increasing. Basically what I am saying is if you buy now, the price after the spike and crash and consolidation will probably be higher than it is right now.
1589  Economy / Speculation / Re: It's time to sell! on: February 25, 2013, 10:20:40 PM
Is it time to sell?

Step 1: Do you own btc?
No: Go to the "Is this a good time to buy" thread.
  Yes: continue to step 2.

Step 2: Do you have immediate need for fiat?
  Yes: Sell now.
  No: continue to step 3.

Step 3: Go do an analysis of the future price and consult your long-term trading strategies. The correct time to sell will be different for each investor.
1590  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is it a good idea to buy Bitcoin now at $29? on: February 25, 2013, 10:14:08 PM
Above silver and below an all time high. The perfect place to stay for a while attracting attention.

I'm also extremely short, hoping for a flash dump.
What do you mean by "extremely short", if you mean you sell bitcoins you have borrowed, then may I ask where did you borrow them?If you are saying "extremely short" by selling out almost all your bitcoins, (but still hold a little), then you are actally "long", there is nothing short. And you have parked fiat money there, you youself are already a factor that makes a down-trend hard.

My bad, I ment shot in the not leveraged way! Besides I'm never all long or short. In stable periods I reset to 50%/50%.

So if we stay at $30 for a month or so, I buy in again and maintain my 50%/50% Dollar value ratio by selling less and less on the way up.

Srsly, whats the merit of fractioning one's position aka never going "all-in"?
I understand that it makes sense when you trade on margin, but other then that, whats the point?
Id really like to understand your reasoning behind it.

If you have 100% bitcoins, and there is found a hole in the code which makes bitcoin worthless, then you are left with nothing. If you have 100% USD, and the fed prints a gazillion dollars overnight and everybody switches to bitcoin before you wake up, you miss the rocket and are left with nothing. Therefore, it makes sense to have some percent in each currency to lower the overall risk.
1591  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone got the XRP? (Ripple Giveaway) on: February 25, 2013, 10:07:32 PM
I got mine, it took a couple days but it showed up eventually.

If you have not received any, make sure you follow the posting rules - no formating and no other text in the post.

Some people are selling their XRP. I am saving mine for later, maybe some of my friends will be interested in ripple, and I can spot them the 300+ XRP they will need to start an account.
1592  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: pls staup wit da ripple threads on: February 25, 2013, 10:03:05 PM
pls staup it. it's like errywhere.

You started a Ripple thread to complain about how many Ripple threads there are ... irony!
1593  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: February 25, 2013, 10:01:42 PM
I've extended 1 USD of trust to everyone I listed previously.

thoughtcourier     rn7iD6DpnCwH8kjJDCsENibMXkgmJkRCRz                          <-- this is me

what now?

I'd feel equally comfortable trusting strangers on the internet with small amounts as one internet company with a large amount.

My main interest in Ripple is transferring Bitcoin over it and seeing if there's a way to implement P2P lending club over it.

Just to try things out, I sent you a tiny amount of USD, even though I have no USD balance. I now have a tiny negative USD balance. I think the only place you could send that would be to Tino Y, as he is the only other person who trusts me so far, or back to me.

1594  Economy / Securities / Re: MPEx & Bitcoin Stock Exchanges on: February 25, 2013, 08:44:53 PM
No mention of Crypto::Stocks?
Because it has about two assets with any value in them.

How is that different to MPEX ?

Different because MPEx does not also have a bunch of worthless cruft cluttering it.
Different because MPEx has other stuff besides stocks (like options).
1595  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WTF happened to ripple? on: February 25, 2013, 05:25:43 PM
Maybe they can manipulate or crash the XRP market. Who cares? That will only affect people who transact in XRP, not those who transact in other currencies.  And the ability to transact in arbitrary currencies is the main selling point of Ripple. The XRP are just an auxiliary tool.

In fact, not only *can* they crash the XRP market, they will, repeatedly. As long as the giveaways continue happening, XRP will be seriously hampered as a store of value. This is one of the reasons the pre-issue doesn't bother me too much: unless they're lying about how they plan to distribute XRP, it will be difficult for them to make much money by cashing out. Their stated intentions – making Ripple free to use as long as possible for as many people as possible – are incompatible with making a quick buck off of the pre-issued XRP.

Not only will the XRP market crash each time there is another dump/giveaway/massive sale by the founders, they have also explicitly stated that the reserve requirements and transaction fees may be lowered in the future, and each time these are lowered the price will drop as well.
1596  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: February 25, 2013, 04:32:17 PM
I am still trying to wrap my head around how to use this in conjunction with bitcons.

Lets say, for example, from a previous business dealing I owe 100 btc to Mr T. I plan to pay him at some point in the future, could we use ripple to our advantage? What I am thinking is by using Ripple he could trade that amount I owe him before I actually pay it. But I am stuck trying to figure out who trust who in ripple? Would I trust him 100 btc in ripple, and then lower my trust amount as I pay him back, or would he trust me 100 btc, then I send him 100 PeterLambert BTC IOU, which he then sends back when I give him actual btc?
1597  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple bubble on: February 23, 2013, 10:34:29 PM
As far as I am concerned the Ripple giveaway is a scam unless everyone else is also not seeing any balance after more than 48 hours of posting their wallet address. I posted again just in case the script magically skipped me.

Did you make sure you followed the posting rules: no other text in the post, no formating?
1598  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: February 23, 2013, 10:32:21 PM

I went to the 'trade' page, and tried to set up a trade. I am not sure why it shows up under your name?
1599  Economy / Securities / Re: {Bakewell} Get an equitable stake in a transparent & growing mining company on: February 23, 2013, 10:16:14 PM
What is the plan for the old rig once the new one arrives?
1600  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: February 23, 2013, 06:25:27 PM
An order popped up that I did not enter (the last one at the bottom):

wtf? can anyone explain this? or is it a bug?

I think that was me.
