801  Economy / Services / Re: Rent out your signature! Up to 0.25 BTC / month on: July 08, 2013, 02:08:36 PM
In other news, for now we stopped buying new signatures. So please don't apply anymore. We will open again in the near future.
Will you continue paying for another month after the current one runs up?
We will continue, but the model will be slightly different.

Can you give a heads-up as to what the new model is going to be like? Definitely looking forward to hearing this, Smiley.

Any update on this?
802  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Help me please... on: July 08, 2013, 01:56:53 PM
I took a loan ($500) yesterday, and I need to give it back by the end of July...
But I bought 6.329 btc and now the price is going down!!!!

HELP!

You are doing it wrong. Right now the price is trending downward, so you should be borrowing bitcoins and selling them for dollars, then at the end of the month you buy back your bitcoins and keep the difference.

Or you can go out and do some work and earn money to pay back your loan. How were you planning to pay back the loan when you took it out?

Go invest your money at BTCT.co, if you are smart you might be able to beat the downward rate of btc/usd and have money left after you pay back your loan. But if you are unlucky/bad investor you could end up with nothing.

Or if you are feeling really lucky, you can head over to bitbet (see the link in my sig) and put all your bitcoins down on some bets.
803  Economy / Services / Re: Hire a troll... Id troll anybody on: July 08, 2013, 01:39:31 PM
Just make offers, IDK How much...

You dont even have to tell me what to say, just give me a category/subject of what to talk about.
I Will talk about anything!

There's this guy named ironcross360, I'd like to see him trolled.

He did troll himself, this thread led to him being banned, for now at least.
He does not appear to be banned to me.

Look harder I guess?

Nothing on his profile says "banned" or "deactivated".
I suppose you being a Moderator gives you x-ray vision?  Grin
(Which is to suppose that you have an "account status" indicator you see that the little people cannot?)

He showed back up again as Ironcross3602 to talk about how he was banned. You can also look at his post history, he was posting about 100 times a day and now he has not been active since June 29th.
804  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sourceforge censorship in Iran on: July 08, 2013, 01:15:28 PM
BTW, it was so funny, when Iran captured their drone by spoofing its GPS receiver.. As it turns out the most advanced military in the world doesn't even bother to use signatures on their military focused navigation system. What a bunch of lamers - no wonder that they see such a big thread to their national security in enemy having access to sha256 algo.. Smiley

Ha, I hadn't heard that was how they got it, I was under the impression it was just stupidity on the part of the Americans. Seems like something you would want to do: if you have a flying death robot you should make it so the people you are spying on/shooting at cannot take control of it.
805  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is bitcoin price not going up? on: July 08, 2013, 01:12:12 PM
It's the same story - the rich get richer.

I prefer the phrasing, "It takes money to make money."

Maybe we could try one of those other systems that has always failed?  Do it somehow differently, and see if we can avoid the problem of running out of other people's money?

Avoiding the problem of running out of other people's money is generally how wealth is gained. It really only differs in how happy you make them about parting with it, and how much you have to fool them to do so.

I prefer the phrasing "the rich get richer" as it applies to systems without money, I think it causes the failure of a lot of systems, as well as the repeated failure of the most popular.

The rich are the people who made money. They know how to make money, so that is what they do, they make more money. The poor do not know how to make money, so they don't or else they would be rich.
806  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is bitcoin price not going up? on: July 08, 2013, 01:08:40 PM

i would love to see something like average price from top 3-4 exchanges with most volume = price of Bitcoin.

Why would anybody be so stupid as to use only one exchange when there are several with slightly different rates? Of course the price of bitcoin is the average of all the exchanges, it has been since there were multiple ways of exchanging.

For an example, the Winklvoss ETF filing document says they will compute the price of bitcoins as the weighted average of MtGox, BTC-E and Bitstamp.
807  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sourceforge censorship in Iran on: July 08, 2013, 12:58:08 PM

I didn't find this topic already addressed in a search, so I thought I'd mention it, since inflation in Iran doesn't appear to be diminishing.

I seem to remember this being discussed maybe a year ago? It is still just as valid a concern now as it was then. Bitcoin is meant to go beyond national boundaries and silly politics.

Honestly, I do not see why the US is so hard on Iran, they seem to just want a boogeyman to fight against and an excuse to continue expanding their military and squeezing every last drop out of taxpayers.

a better organized gambling site

Better than what do you have in mind? What are you comparing to?
809  Economy / Speculation / Re: Winklevoss Twins File to Launch Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Product on: July 08, 2013, 02:21:03 AM
My first instincts on hearing about this ETF are that its a bad idea.

because the idea behind bitcoins is that you don't need derivatives to represent bitcoins, you just own the 'real' bitcoins. Why let someone else ever hold your bitcoins when you can do it your self. This is also why I don't like Ripple gateways and bitcoin transactions in the ripple network and why you don't need a bank.

If we want to attract more people into bitcoins we need easier ways to get actual bitcoins, not paper certificates.

People supporting the ETF seem to be mainly saying it will be great for bitcoins because it'll attract big money. Maybe bitcoins shouldn't be in too much hurry to attract big money. No need for impatience. I distrust ETFs because of things I've heard about GLD and SLV. In the small print of those ETFs it says something along the lines of 'we don't have to redeem any metal and can pay you in fiat'. I've heard people with shares in GLD own 100 times more paper than there is real metal. Net effect of these ETFs is that the money supposedly going to investing in gold is actually being diluted 100 times into paper.

If the WinkleBros can proove they have the bitcoins backing the ETF then it makes it better I guess, but I'm still a bit uneasy about the idea myself.

Not everything has to be done because it will be "better". This is a free country, bitcoins were designed in part to allow more freedom in money, if these people want to use bitcoins in this manner it will not hurt you so why not let them try to make a little money this way? Or are you just jealous you didn't think of it and/or have the resources to pull it off first?
810  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS/Groupbuy] Bitcoin Guitar Picks on: July 08, 2013, 02:14:09 AM
I might be interested in this, but only if we get past the first price tier.

If the price of bitcoins changes before you send in the order would that affect the prices we get?

OK, put me down for 10 of them.
811  Other / Off-topic / Re: best movie you have ever seen in your life on: July 08, 2013, 02:09:08 AM
Titanic
...

I thought Titanic was a horrible movie when I watched it. I guess art is in the eye of the beholder, I just didn't see why people like that. For one thing I thought Leonardo DiCaprio did a horrible job acting, his more recent films he does much better in, like I really enjoyed "Inception". And I do not find Kate Winslet attractive at all.
812  Economy / Securities / Re: Accounting for the nonzero asset corporation. The MPEx standard. on: July 04, 2013, 11:44:14 AM
Without trying to start an argument, I was curious why the S.MG art contest payout was listed as an asset and not an expense?

The payout is listed as an expense (in red, first table). The thing which was obtained in exchange for it is listed as an asset, of the intangible kind.

Aha, I had forgotten about the artwork retained after the contest. I guess I saw the category "Intangible assets and goodwill" and mistakenly thought that was part of goodwill rather than an intangible asset. Thanks for answering my question Smiley

But now we know a bit more about "goodwill". Is it used in the same way in this accounting standard as described in the wikipedia quote? (If somebody wants to cite a better source than wikipedia, that would be great too)
813  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why people holding their coins when the price is going down for sure... on: July 04, 2013, 11:30:50 AM
MT Gox withdraws are back online now, it just may have some positive price pressure on now...

I didn't sell ... glad I held on... even if drops more that's fine it'll be back at some point...

no they arent

"Two more weeks" !!! Who do they think they are, BFL?

Who is still using MtGox anyway? I pulled my coins out of there a long time ago. I think they are still allowing bitcoin withdrawals, take your money to another exchange and sell before the price goes down any more!
814  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Bitcoin's survival and long term prospects depend on MtGox getting killed. on: July 04, 2013, 11:26:53 AM
Please do your part killing this offensive piece of shit scamsite. Never trade on MtGox. Not now, not ever. Every dollar you pay in taxes goes to feed some bureaucrat swine, pay for hospitals, education and bombers. Every dollar you pay in MtGox fees goes to feed swine exclusively.

Find a different exchange, trade there, never MtGox again.

Oh mighty wise one, do you have a suggestion for a better exchange to use?

The first bitcoins I bought were on TradeHill, because they allowed easy Dwolla deposits and I thought MtGox seemed sketchy (this was right around the time of the big MtGox hack and rollback etc). Tradehill went away, so I stopped using them.

I then used MtGox, now I have an account there and a small amount of money there, so unless another option is clearly better I will keep using them because it is familiar. They do have a record of developing very long lag times during high volumes of trade, so I would be interested in an exchange that does the whole exchange thing better.

I tried putting up an ad on localbitcoins, but never got any response.

I used Coinbase to buy some bitcoin, but their daily limit is obnoxious and they are just selling bitcoins, it is not the same as trading on a market.

What is the best option, or do we still need somebody to make the ideal exchange site?

I have been very satisfied with CampBX of late (im in the US so I cannot speak of their service levels in other countries and currencies) When I transfer to USD to dwolla it is virtually instant.

I have been trying CampBX. I agree, transfers to and from CampBX using Dwolla are a breeze (If only it didn't take 4 days for transfers between dwolla and my bank ... but that is just the limitation of the legacy banking structure). I am still unsatisfied. CampBX website is extremely slow, even slower than MtGox. They do not seem to have the lag on orders like MtGox does, once you get an order placed it executes pretty much immediately. But placing the order is soooo slow, each page load takes 10-30 seconds, and you have to confirm everything twice. The CampBX website layout is also poorly done, I would like to have all the information in one place, but they have a separate page for every bit of information, so to check anything you need to wait for another 15 second page load. I didn't actually time the page loads, but that is my guess of how long they take on average. The main page is also obnoxious with the giant moving graphic splash, instead they should have a much smaller news section and the current market information.

Without trying to start an argument, I was curious why the S.MG art contest payout was listed as an asset and not an expense?

Any framework or set of criteria with respect to capitalization vs. expensing that is loose enough to deem the contest payout to be capital in nature can be used to justify capitalized just about every other expense imaginable. There is a reason that preexisting standards are so stringent with respect to capitalization criteria (identifiability, future economic benefit, measurability, etc).  This all seems to be lost on MP.

This led me to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodwill_(accounting)

Quote
While a business can invest to increase its reputation, by advertising or assuring that its products are of high quality, such expenses cannot be booked as contributing to goodwill. There is hence a disconnect: goodwill from acquisitions can be booked, since it is derived from a market or purchase valuation, but similar internal spending cannot be booked, although it will be recognized by investors who compare a company's market value with its book value.

I think this implies booking an expenditure such as this as goodwill is wrong, but I could be reading this incorrectly?
816  Economy / Securities / Re: Accounting for the nonzero asset corporation. The MPEx standard. on: July 03, 2013, 09:04:22 PM
The part about the loans where a loan with no end date is accounted as infinite made me smile. Essentially it makes all those PMBs empirically worthless.

A haiku:

Opening the door
See the big blue sky waiting
Fly into the air

The ground approaches,
wind whips at my teary face,
Impact imminent.

Where's my parachute?
I thought I was wearing that ...
Damn, I forgot it Sad

If you are so sure that the price is going to go down, instead of talking on the forum you should be out shorting bitcoins as hard as you can. Borrow as many bitcoins as people will lend you, sell those and buy them back later. If you are so sure that the price will go from 85 to 75 over the next week, offer to borrow at 5% for a week, I am sure there will be people who will take that offer.
