1021  Economy / Securities / Re: Vircurex may 2013 report, is this a joke Kumala ? on: June 11, 2013, 03:03:01 PM
It seems strange that Bitcoin service operators are STILL using VPS.  We have been running bare metal, with a "known good copy" of OS installed remotely using IPMI remote media capabilities.  Nobody at our hosting provider either knows any login credentials or has the ability to reset them.  Whole disk encryption ensures that even physical theft of disk would not lead to data loss.   The funny thing is that even with that I was too paranoid to use a hot wallet for refunds so they required manual processing.

Sounds like you know what you are doing, unlike so many in the bitcoin world.
1022  Economy / Securities / Re: SANDSTORM: - A Collective Investment Vehicle for BTC. - on: June 11, 2013, 03:00:24 PM
I don't see this in the OP, maybe you said this somewhere, but what percentage of profits are sent out as dividends?

100% profits up to 1% of capital raised will go to dividends. Profits above this will be divided into a reserve "carryover fund" and further dividends. The allocation will depend on the health of the carry over fund. This carry over is a safety net for the chance of a negative week.

Then in the last week you should have had a dividend of 0.49, but you had a dividend of 1.9? Shouldn't the extra 1.41 be divided between the buffer and the dividends?
1023  Economy / Securities / Re: SANDSTORM: - A Collective Investment Vehicle for BTC. - on: June 11, 2013, 02:57:13 PM
-The IPO is tiny. This is a reflection on the amount of trust i think i deserve. Which isn't much. I'm not kidding myself here. I think people should wait before forming an opinion on my understanding of economics and ability to trade BTC related elements.

I think I remember that on the list of things to look out for in a Ponzi: limiting initial investment, slowly letting bigger and bigger investments be made into the scheme.

-The key word there is relatively. Sandstorm is less risky than trading yourself but obviously more risky than a lot of the funds on the market.

I don't think this is true. Trading myself I do not have to wonder if the guy doing the trading is going to run off with my money.

To those saying 1% a week is untenable, I have been getting at least that much on my (admittedly small) portion of my portfolio in bitcoin investments. But I have had a few negative weeks, saying you never have negative weeks sounds a bit fishy. (My USD investment portfolio has been averaging about 1% a year, stupid stock market economy grumble grumble grumble mpfh ...)

Wasn't btcGloab the company behind the GLBSE before it disappeared? Or was that BitcoinGlobal?

1028  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I have a Raspberry Pi, how can I put it to use for mining? on: June 10, 2013, 09:16:43 PM
What you do is buy one of the USB asic devices (like the AsicMiner USB block eruptor) and plug it into your Raspberry Pi. Pis do have a USB port, right?
1029  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does anyone actually donate? on: June 10, 2013, 09:14:48 PM
To be honest I was not expecting this kind of response. Whilst checking a few addresses they seem to be empty, however if I may gweedo, "Yeah, I get tips a lot, cause I am helpful", that provides a fundamental answer.

Listed addresses being empty does not mean that the person has never been tipped, since they could put up a new address after receiving tips. Conversely, an address having bitcoins in it does not mean the person was tipped, the payment could be from something else.
1030  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does anyone actually donate? on: June 10, 2013, 09:10:52 PM
Hi,

I've just been wondering. A lot of people openly display their donation address on the forum however what I'm wondering is does or has anyone given or received a donation?

In my "Poetry" thread I handed out a bunch of tips to people. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=219714.0

Hello i need a bitcoin loan plz me your offer and rate(interest)

Sure, I could give you a loan.

7% interest per week, compounded hourly.

First send me: a scan of your government issued ID, a scan of a recent piece of mail showing your current address, your telephone number, your social security number, your mother's maiden name, your credit card number (and expiration date and security code from the back of the card), and a picture of you with a shoe on your head. And a one page description of what you are going to use the money for and how you plan to pay it back. Oh, and you will have to give your bitcoin address to send the funds.

How much do you need?

I don't see this in the OP, maybe you said this somewhere, but what percentage of profits are sent out as dividends?

Also, you do not address when/if/how additional shares will be issued?
1033  Other / Off-topic / Re: Poetry Contest: Tip your favorite poems on: June 10, 2013, 04:05:46 PM

Why are you turning away free money? At least put up the btc address for your favorite charity.

Nope - even accepting on behalf of a charity puts me in the loop. I'll have no part of it.

Posting a charities bitcoin address would not be accepting bitcoins, since any bitcoins would go directly to the charity, you would never hold them.

Why are you even using this forum if you do not use bitcoins?
1034  Other / Off-topic / Re: Poetry Contest: Tip your favorite poems on: June 10, 2013, 03:34:35 PM
Those who write on forum walls

Roll their shit in little balls

Those who read these words of wit

Eat those little balls of shit

send me your bitcoin address and i will personally send you .1 btc

Thank you but it was just for fun.

As a personal policy I don't accept btc from, give btc to, buy, sell or trade with anyone at this forum - ever. That's why I don't have an address in my sig line.

Why are you turning away free money? At least put up the btc address for your favorite charity.
1035  Other / Off-topic / Re: Poetry Contest: Tip your favorite poems on: June 09, 2013, 09:43:46 PM

Nope, I don't get you either. Maybe your idea of good poetry is not the same as my idea of good poetry.
1036  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Redomination mBTC, XBT, do nothing on: June 09, 2013, 08:12:31 PM
The naming convention and unit of measurement can be for larger than a fraction of the currency, but in general, the ordinary Joe will find it difficult to track down more than two levels of fractional currency.  I give you the extinct "half-penny" as an example.

Half pennies were not discarded because three decimals are too hard, they were discarded because inflation made them worthless. Several of the middle eastern countries use three decimal places still today.
1037  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] BitVPS on: June 09, 2013, 12:56:16 PM
Here is a question: How many more accounts could BitVPS add to fill up the currently owned servers?
1038  Economy / Speculation / Re: Fundamental analysis thread on: June 09, 2013, 04:31:12 AM
we've seen quite a few dectuples already

Many in the last wave of bitcoiners allowed jealousy to blind them and do not see the fact that they are effectively in the same position as the early adopters were in.

i still think that anyone getting in now IS an early adopter...
True, but sad. It shows that not much has happened since ~2010 to realize the potential of this new technology. Once this thread has been updated (if at all) with a wave of major merchants accepting BTC, and things like bitcoin card actually in people's hands - it will be too late to be an early adopter.

I would not say nothing has happened since 2010. There seems to be much better infrastructure around bitcoins now than when I started using it in 2011, they are more useful and easier to use now.
1039  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Investing Bitcoin on: June 08, 2013, 06:16:20 PM
Is anyone aware of any threads/links regarding investing Bitcoin in projects/companies ?
i had a nose around but didn't find much that seemed relevant.. i see the donation aspect is current, but i'm trying to get a sense of possible opportunities in profitable investment...
any info/links appreciated,
steve.

Requesting 'Best Haiku' category for next round if there is one, please. Smiley

Six pints a night,
pressure on my heart.
Fag ends in the ashtray.

I thought haiku was supposed to be 5-7-5, your poem is 4-5-6?
