1581  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Storing coins in offline wallet on: September 25, 2013, 08:22:28 PM
Rescan runs on its own when you put a new wallet.dat file in.

So can you clarify why you stated you can't swap your wallet.dat file?

Im still not seeing how that statement is not false.

PS:  I didnt mean "no" transactions are stored in the wallet.  I meant the entire transaction history of the blockchain is not exclusively stored there.  You made the statement that you can not swap your wallet.dat file becuase it will miss transactions.  In fact all transactions are updated when you put the wallet file back into the directory.
I think he wants to 'store his coins' by copying over wallet.dat, not copying the whole blockchain.
Copying over wallet.dat works fine.
I understand that. But you can't simply swap out wallet.dat files. Doing so will cause the client to "miss" transactions that appeared when the wallet was not present.

Grue,

I think you are mistaken.

I've done this many times myself.  It works.
It used to be the case that a rescan was required after swapping wallets. That was the only issue I had with changing wallets. Now it's automatically rescanned so it's no longer an issue. I edited my post to reflect that.
1582  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin QT problems after upgrade on: September 25, 2013, 08:08:53 PM
By the way, why is this called the Bitcoin QT support forum when absolutely *nobody* from Bitcoin QT participates or helps anyone here?
Because you have no patience to wait longer than 48 hours.

Its not a software support forum when a bunch of end users have to sit around making clueless guesses.

Fail # 2.
Yeah, I really hate it when volunteers don't instantly respond to your problems. /s

1584  Other / Meta / Re: Add BitMessage to additional profile fields. on: September 24, 2013, 11:04:44 PM
I think that is a good idea. There are options to add MSN, Yahoo, Skype etc, so why not have Bitmessage? It's better than Skype etc :-)
Hate to be that guy but "MSN, Yahoo" fields are included by default. Every SMF forum has those profile field. Skype isn't even an option. The only custom field that theymos added was "Bitcoin address" and "Trust"

Thank you for the payout. Always appreciate the extra income Smiley

I would like to re-enroll into the program once more. I've also changed my signature from link B to link C.
1587  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Storing coins in offline wallet on: September 23, 2013, 07:43:59 PM
Can you clarify this?   Everybody I know uses this technique without any problem.  You can simply swap out the wallet.dat file.  People do it all the time.  The client does not miss transactions because transactions are not stored in the wallet.dat file.  The client downloads blockchain transactions every time its opened.  The wallet.dat file simply catches up when the two are recombined.
The client will only "catch" the transactions that are in the newly downloaded blocks. It will not add any missed transactions from its existing block store. If you want to do that, you'll need to run the -rescan option.

transactions are not stored in the wallet.dat file.
That's false.

Your "password" is now a series of steps to decipher the key, which you'll need to memorize.

bravo

then try to navigate to the next page, currently Chrome is throwing a red flag, mentioning something about the site 'dearhusband . com ' being known as having malicious code distributed from it.  it looks like XSS to me.

Thanks TECSHARE, so this worked in California? This is the first court 'hearing' date I assume otherwise it would be an officer against me
I highly doubt his argument worked. If it did, every lawyer would be using it as a precedent in their cases, and it would be a landmark case. Not to mention being paid by the state doesn't imply the judge won't be able to give an impartial hearing.

Ive had 11 Nolles, all I had to do was put on a tie and say I was sorry. Two of the nolles didn't even require me to show up to court - I got the notification by mail.

No knowledge of law needed here.

Plead not guilty.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but apology implies you admit to doing it.
1591  Economy / Economics / Re: The Myth of Money as the Mere Concept of an IOU on: September 22, 2013, 06:27:57 PM
I'd rather believe it is unawareness of how bank operates instead of "accepting the risk in exchange for convenience". 1% of insurance capital means only 1% of depositors are insured, it only works psychologically. Of course the banks can always print more money to reduce the risk, but then the question become: Why exchange your work for some paper that can be printed at will (to save the banks)? When people start to understand how fiat money works and lose their trust in fiat money, the risk of a systematic failure is very high, none of the insurance can cover

Suppose that fiat money start to lose its purchase power 20% per year, and people start to withdraw all their savings to purchase value holding assets like gold and bitcoin, what can FDIC help?

Really? So you believe that most people are unaware that banks operate on a fractional reserve system? I would argue that anyone coming out of highschool would know:
  • banks lend/invest depositor's money
  • as corollary, banks do not have enough "cash" on hand to cover every depositor's deposits (aka fractional reserve)
  • in the case of bank failure, part or all their deposits may be lost

Bitcointalk:  the forum of a revolutionary new cryptocurrency, where the moderators don't understand the downsides of fiat and fractional reserve, and argue that government regulation is a good thing.

I could've sworn this place was populated by relatively intelligent people at one point, but that memory is getting pretty fuzzy.
Ad hominem
For the record, I am aware of the downsides of fiat currency and fractional reserve banking. Also, I never argued that "government regulation is a good thing". That is a strawman.
1592  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should I pay my Traffic Tickets? on: September 22, 2013, 04:47:40 PM
ITT: people who don't know shit about law.

Your only hope of getting out of the ticket is proving you didn't do it, or the law is unconstitutional. Saying the "law is not effective at doing x" WILL NOT GET YOU ACQUITTED. If it did work, why has no lawyer ever tried this argument?

Option 3: Send a letter and include the fantastic video showing how speed limits are not aimed at safety at all:[/b]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BKdbxX1pDw
The US Government forces imported cars to use more gas to increase gas usage. For example there are no BMW 316i in the US, there are only 318. While in Europe the 316 is more common. This is to force people to use more gas.

showing a youtube video is the least professional way, and possibly the least convincing way to present your argument.

1593  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Too small amount Error in Bitcoin-QT 0.8.3 ? on: September 22, 2013, 04:14:18 PM
that "feature" totally sucks. I need to send small transactions to test my business logic. I would be willing to pay enough transaction fees to make the small transactions possible. this is the first time bitcoin developers have pissed me off with their changes.
protip: use testnet for tests Smiley

1595  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How can I pay little to no miners fee on: September 22, 2013, 02:15:04 PM

Well thanks , that was what I was looking for Cheesy

I also had to pay 0.0001 , which is accaptable comparing to 0.0005 but I do wonder if there is 'pay no fee' option?
There is no such option. But if you are so cheap that you can't afford to pay 1 cent in fees, you can use the "no forced transaction fee" fork for bitcoin-qt (find it yourself).

1597  Economy / Economics / Re: The Myth of Money as the Mere Concept of an IOU on: September 21, 2013, 07:43:09 PM
What exactly is wrong with losing ownership of the money? Deposit insurance covers in case of a bank failure. It's technically a IOU, but the possibility of not being able to withdraw their is slim. What you're arguing over is semantics. Yes, the money deposited in a bank is an IOU, but for all intents and purposes it's just as good as real money.

If all the people go to bank and withdraw their money, there will be a bank run. Just like FRB, FDIC is another level of insurance to calm down depositors. If all the banks facing withdraw pressure at the same time, even FDIC can not payout that much money. FDIC only have $100 billion at hand to insure about $10 trillion deposits
But what I argued was that IOU "all intents and purposes it's just as good as real money". Yes, there's a tiny risk of catastrophic failure if the bank fails and the deposit insurance fails, but people accept that risk in exchange for convenience and security of their money, compared to stashing them under their mattresses. People not are misinformed about what happens to their money when they are making a deposit, so I'm really having trouble seeing the issue here.

Also,
For example, when a commercial bank loans money deposited with it, this bank does not withdraw that money from the borrowed account. So the loaned money must belong to both its borrower and its loaner
No, that's not true. In this case, the bank has a IOU to the depositor, and the lender has a IOU to the bank. The money belongs to one person only: the lender. The bank has a fraction of the deposits in cash for customer withdraws, hence why the bank can also fulfill the depositor's withdraw request at any time (to an extent).

If you cannot see anything wrong with losing ownership of your money, then why don't you give it all to me?
Because:
  • you don't have deposit insurance
  • you can't give me my money at moment's notice
  • i don't know or trust you
  • you are not bound by any government regulation or audits

Maybe I wouldn't be fucked, if some exchange add new coins on time.
Exchanges operate as a business. If they don't feel PeopleCoin is significant enough, they won't add it. They are under no obligations to add any coins. Next time get a trusted member to do escrow.

This forum used to be hosted by MtGox. Not sure about today.
Today we're on Private Internet Access. We pay for this by giving them one ad slot automatically in the weekly ad auctions and linking them on the bottom of each page. Given that ad slots usually run between $500 and $2000 per week, I'm not actually sure who's getting the better end of the deal, here...
To them, it's only a good deal if we bring in more customers than server expenses. It's not like they can sell their slot to someone else.
