161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is only a means to get money into alts. Bitcoin fails. on: December 17, 2014, 07:10:21 PM
While Bitcoin is a great way to get money into other crypto startups, i.e. an investment vehicle, that is not all it is.   It can be hard to see it becoming a major world currency when it's taking a hit, but it could survive yet.  I'm undecided.  Might as well park funds in a stable crypto like bitUSD while the crash happens, unless you think the crash has happened and it's buying time.

User Issued Asset Upgrades
https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=11921.msg157114#msg157114

1) You can now specify a required transaction fee (payable in user issued asset) once per transaction that withdraws that asset type.
2) You can now have multi-sig issuers/control over an asset
3) You can now have child asset symbols like child accounts to facilitate trust in a common issuer of related assets.
4) Issuers can now optionally retain complete control over all balances in their asset. (Freeze accounts, etc) Needed for legal compliance.
5) Issuers can now optionally white list public keys that may own/trade the issued asset.

With these powers Gateways can comply with all regulations just like with Ripple.  Companies can issue shares while remaining in full compliance with the law.

Voting demo for California has no opponent anymore.
Since the other opponents are gone because they don't want to be open source, so Bitshares team is the only player in town.
How can you lose when you're the only player?

wouldnt it be easier/desired to reward only to BTS?

That makes the most sense seeing as AGS/PTS were sharedropped BTS.  They are getting double-sharedropped.

exactly my point. also since ags/pts got sharedropped BTS they are basically disconnected from the bitshares project now which is reflected by pts price e.g.
(at least in terms of asset dividends)

Yes BTS should be removed. AGS/PTS are only reason why BTS or any other Bitshares coins exist. There are some AGS holders without any BTS shares! Anybody who donated for Bitshares development after February 28, 2014 are out. AGS donations started on January 1, 2014 and run for 199 days.

no, you are wrong. AGS/PTS holders just recently got a BTS sharedrop because they got merged into BTS.

No, they are not. They need to wait two years for their 'shares'. http://bitshares.org/bitshares-reloaded/

Ok, its not that important.  It's not possible to get it perfectly balanced for everyone.  I support this project.  Lets see what Bitshares + POW can do!

Initial Supply: 100M SPK  (Divided among AGS, PTS, and BTS holders)

Is this drop to PTS for current PTS holders or holders during the Nov 5th snapshot?

Good question...

Is there an answer for this?
thanks

I'm skeptical - but interested.

DPOS is either superior to POW - or it isn't.

POW is nice because it is truly centralized, but it can never scale because of this.

POW has a big advantage of being a great distribution mechanism in the vital early stages of a coin/DACs growth.  Having thousands of miners available to be the first users makes it a whole lot easier to get network effect, especially as the first users are the hardest to get.

This will be really interesting to watch.  I wonder how the network effect of sparkle will compare with BTS.  Sparkle will have a ton of POW miners to become the first users.  A noteworthy project.

170  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 2014 Proof of Honor (POH) Awards - Nominate an Individual! on: November 23, 2014, 10:28:10 PM
I would like to nominate Daniel "bytemaster" Larimer.

Among other things, Larimer worked out how to create bitAssets, that is, assets (like bitUSD) that exist on a blockchain but are pegged to the value their real world counterpart, Larimer pioneered the notion of a Distributed Autonomous Company (DAC), Larimer built Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS) and Transfer Invisibly To a Name (TITAN) to serve as the underlying BitShares blockchain-technology, Larimer outlined the relation between decentralization, economies of scale and cost.

Larimer also started the bounty for the most watched Bitcoin video ever back in 2010.

Larimer also deserves special mention for being exceptionally generous and honest with his projects, outlining them in detail on the forums long before developing them, sharing all his insights and solutions immediately as he thinks of them, encouraging people to challenge them, and having all code and written content available openly with free access.

People who feel like leaving may wish to park their funds it bitassets.  Want to cash out your bitcoin for Gold or even USD?  Why not use bitassets instead, bitGOLD and bitUSD, crypto that tracks the real world prices.  Its like having crypto-gold or crypto-USD.  Easily exchangeable for bitcoin in the bitshares decentralised exchange.  Just a thought for those who are seriously considering leaving.

Is there a bitSILVER yet, or is one in the pipeline?

This lists the current bitassets:
http://www.bitsharesblocks.com/assets

bitSILVER is not 'launched' yet.  The markets open once there are 51 price feeds and a certain amount of buy/sell orders on each side.  It should be up within a few months I'd expect.

That would be a false sense of security as bitGold and bitUSD wouldn't be convertible to their real equivalents if the BTSx network dies.  Mastercoin is a good example of a hype coin that later died and BitSharesX reminds me a lot of Mastercoin - misinformation and deception and money changing hands between a few private funds in China.

It's true holding bitassets does expose you to systemic failure of Bitshares.  So far it's been working very well though.  Bitassets are collateralized by Bitshares, for them to lose their value and become uncollateralized, Bitshares (BTS) has to lose its value extremely rapidly, as in a 60% crash on all exchanges in the space of a few hours.  That kind of thing.  So it is possible but very very unlikely.  Providing that doesn't happen, a buyer of bitassets will always be able to exchange their bitasset for equivilant value of Bitshares as there will always be a short who is required by the rules of the market to cover their position and buy back the bitassets within 30 days.  I.e. 1 bitUSD is exchangeable for 1 USD worth of BTS which is then tradable for 1 real USD.

You also earn a few percent in interest/yield by holding bitassets, like a bank account, but one that actually pays interest.

174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Choices for earning BTC interest on: October 07, 2014, 02:33:21 PM
You can earn interest on bitBTC which follows the price of bitcoin.  It's one of Bitshares-X's bitassets, and for some reason they call it 'yield' instead of interest.  It comes from various transaction fees.

176  Other / MultiBit / Re: How to convert root key into private key on: September 27, 2014, 02:25:01 PM
I managed to borrow a friends windows 8 machine and downloaded armoury.  I imported the root key I have on my paper wallet, but I noticed no addresses appeared.  I clicked to back up and export the key lists, but only another root key was given.  No private key.  I tried creating an address and then exporting the key lists and a private key turned up so I imported it into multibit and let it sync, but as I thought there were 0 bitcoins on that address (makes sense as I had just created it...).

So I am confused.

I have a watch only address on blockchain.info and I can see the coins, but why when I import the root key no address appears?  Do I have to download the entire blockchain?

Edit:  What's even more confusing is the watch only address I can see my BTC sitting on is the same as the address than the wallet generated, in which case, how can the private key of that address not contain my BTC?

Going to try resetting blockchain and transactions for a long sync...

SUCCESS

Thank you for those who helped.
177  Other / MultiBit / Re: How to import root key from armoury paper wallet into multibit? on: September 27, 2014, 10:01:41 AM
I think you have to have an offline Armory installation at least.

Then restore wallet with Armory.

Open Wallet Properties for the wallet.

Click "Backup This Wallet"

Choose "Export Key Lists"

Click "Export Key Lists"

And you get your private keys in various formats.

Thanks for the reply.  I given that a go but the problem is I am on mac 10.6.8 and armoury only works on 10.7 or later, it wont open.

178  Other / MultiBit / How to convert root key into private key SOLVED on: September 27, 2014, 09:05:11 AM
Hi,
I have an armoury paper wallet with a root key and a secure print code.  I need to import it into multibit.  I managed to do it once before about a year ago so I know it is possible, I was using these instructions:
http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/5324/how-do-i-import-private-keys-from-bitcoin-qt-to-multibit-client

But I can't get it to work this time, there was something else I had to do last time that isn't in the instructions (because the instructions explain how to import a private key rather than a root key).  I did something to 'convert' the root key into the private key but I can't remember how I did it.

I've had others on the forum tell me to download offline armoury and do it there, but I am running Macos 10.6.8 and armoury only seems to be available for 10.7 or later.

Please can someone help? I don't have access to armoury where I originally made the backup.

179  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where do YOU see bitcoin in 1 month? 1 year? 5 years? on: September 24, 2014, 06:51:13 PM

1 month - $320 - $650

1 year - $1500 - $6000

5 years - $25k - $50k

180  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: BTSX+BitUSD vs NuShares+NuBits - which will win the USD peg war? on: September 24, 2014, 11:41:36 AM
I'm betting on BTSX, but time will tell.  Bitassets have great names too, bitUSD, it sounds 'official', but that is secondary of course to the market mechanism.
