Theymos is asking for a list of who might want to take over the old WO thread:

If option 1 or 3 occur, who are the candidates for new listed owner / mods? Someone please compile a list.

Anyone interested?

I will re-post something I posted earlier, then deleted when I saw so many new WO threads pop up.

Here it is:

The WO thread is one of the longest running, most viewed threads on the entire net.

And it is so because of its anarchic nature.  It is also (surely) valuable to Bitcointalk. Anyone imposed who does not maintain it (roughly) as it has been, will kill it off.

Having Adam back is the only way to keep it exactly as it has been - and it looks like that cannot happen.

So, a compromise might be this (option 1 but we elect them):

A vote for a candidate known on the thread for a limited tenure - say a couple of years - and allow them to appoint a couple of deps of their own to support them when necessary, since if it continues as it was, it is a bloody hard job to keep up with (or go on holiday).

Candidates must be nominated by a minumum number of nominees who are way above newbie status.

If possible the votes in any election should probably come from people who have at least posted here to a certain level to avoid the vote being skewed by an army of fake accounts, or hijacked by outside interests.

Maybe it would be nice if voting was via a blockchain method of verified openness, too (ok, I can dream - but it would be cool)

So, if not Adam, then:

1. List of candidates apply within a fixed period to allow for qualifying under some minimum nomination procedure to be elected.

2. Election running for a reasonable period - a few of weeks to run from end of the nomination period based upon some minimal manifesto for each candidate.

3. Election for fixed term period of 'office'.

4. Ability of winner to appoint up to two deputies (of their choice) with a laissez fair attitude according to their manifesto, yet in keeping with the history of the thread

5. No interference from BTCT with thread, or chosen winner after election (or we are back to where we are now).

Would this not be reasonable and workable?  Yes, Theymos could just rescind it if it does not work to his liking - but I doubt he'd want to, it's a huge asset to BTCT to continue it.   It would also be fun and revitalise the WO thread - which should keep its name, as nonsensical as it is.

Any takers?

EDIT: And no, I don't want to do it.
1625  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: June 30, 2017, 08:17:55 PM
ps... what is the most popular thread on this site?

+1

Theymos does want it to continue - just not be a pain in the ass he needs to get monitored all the time.

We need to take it on, to save him the trouble.

So maybe we elect a new Adam, who gets to dep some modding duties out (it's too much for one person).  But the 'mod' term is fixed, so at least we get a say and don't get totalitarian rule.

1626  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer: BTC/USD Price Tracking and Discussion 2.0 (Unmoderated) on: June 30, 2017, 03:47:41 PM
I like the idea of free speech! Thats more in keeping with Adams original thread.

Agreed, but it won't be unmoderated - the old one was and this will be.

Still, Meuh is far too heavy handed for me.  May the best fork win.

I will follow this for now...

Agreed. I believe we need a bare minimum of moderation. Adam was pretty much the perfect mod.
After having two posts deleted within the first 4 pages (one relevant to speculation, one not so much), I felt compelled to start a new thread.

I agree and well done, except the forum will moderate it if no one else does and I think your thread is unmoderated. Some moderation is necessary, it just needs to be someone like Adam, or you, I don't mind as long as it's the spirit of the Original WO thread.
1627  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer Reloaded - Bitcoin price tracking & discussion on: June 30, 2017, 02:12:57 PM
You can now vote on the future of Wall Observer here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1993570.0

Seems the forks are the voting.

I agree on Meuh being heavy-handed, but I think no moderation at all gets us back to the post Adam era.

A light moderating hand is probably necessary to keep Theymos happy and leave us with no interference from TPTB.

I wish the old thread could have elected a new mod from within our ranks - fixed period tenure, no right to ban, post deletions justified publicly...

That would keep it 'ours', leave the heavy hand out and maintain the continuance of the most historic thread in crypto.

Some of the choices offered by Theymos could be somewhat similar to that you are saying. The option of using one of the existing forks is atm one of the less voted choices. For a reason.

And yes, maybe Meuh's thread will be a good one for STRICT ON TOPIC WALL OBSERVING... but that's not substitute for WO. That's something we need a solution for.

P.S.: Post deletions justified publicly is a no-no. That's completely disruptive of the thread, a lot of hassle, and ... well many reasons. The point is that deletion should only be done in such blatant cases that it would already be self-explanatory.

I can accept this, I was thinking it works in the Monero thread - just an occasional tidy up summary in red.  But I grant you if it's as busy as it has been, it maybe messy.

I just don't want an arbitrary power doing as it wishes and never justifying it, or allowing dissent, or complaint to be aired. Meuh's thread sucks if it stays as is - he just seems to want technical analysis - WO was never really just that!
1628  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: June 30, 2017, 02:06:49 PM
If it is indeed option 1, then shouldn't we have a say in who it is?

It won't be any good if its a divisive character.

Remember to short the QUOTES.

- keep the last sentence of the QUOTE.
- the date in the QUOTE is the marker (link) to retrieve the initial message.

---

Rise of the rules in progress (Enforcement).
Stay in the subject.

Is that what you have been asked to do, or what you want - I really don't think (unless it's excessive) it is a problem. Sometimes a long arument needs quoting in full to show how it developed.  Unless it's an argument with JJG of course ;-)

I really don't want excess moderation, the WO was legendary because of its anarchy (and in spite of it) please let's keep it laissez faire..?

The only moderation I would really like to see is one against neo-nazi anti-semitism.  This is IMO unnacceptable. All else, even trolling is part of the show.

We are grown ups - please respect that and save yourself a lot of stress?

I will observe the thread in the hope it is as relaxed (in general) as before and respects Adm's legacy, which was to create one of the most amazing threads on the internet.
1632  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: June 30, 2017, 07:43:24 AM
Seems a number of forks already exist - fighting for the crowd.

I will delete my election suggestion - was probably daft anyway, I should have realised a fork was inevitable.

Ho hum!

The WO thread just got locked.  Theymos want to solve the problem of the wonderful rudderless ship.

Am ashamed to say I am also a Brit and in the same boat  - made loads of paper wallets way back (for different amounts) and it took me all day, so it looks a load of hassle.

But, if I use an old computer which is not on or ever likely to be on the net, get BTC QT onto it, then please (ELI5):

I import key from paper wallet to QT wallet, make signature, save signature, then DELETE that QT wallet (and repeat process for each BTC paper wallet address)?

If you are able to help may I PM you to verify this process (and save my embarrassment).  I am not a techie either, just a long term Bitcoiner who is a mac user and runs a mile even from simple CLI stuff.

yes. that's all you need to do. it's the typing the keys in that'll drive you crazy though. do it one character at a time as 9 times out of 10 you'll get one wrong.

feed your addresses into the byteball wallet first on a live computer as it's an individual message per address. note them down and then sign the message for each address with the offline machine.

cut and paste all of the signed messages into a txt file and then take them off the computer and put them onto a live one where you can paste into the byteball wallet. obviously note the message that matches the address.

you'd be better off nuking the computer's hard disk afterwards and then reinstalling the operating system just to be absolutely sure.

you can also do it with this - https://github.com/brainwallet/brainwallet.github.io/archive/f7679dd03f39a04edced641960a7c3df1116fea9.zip which is what i used. it has a sign message section.

you won't need to delete the wallet every time you sign. you can import all the keys and sign each address after selecting it.

Thanks - really appreciate the help!

I am all mac, so the brainwallet app won't work for me, but I reckon using a BTC wallet will do.  I see a long day ahead!  But even the stellar drop will more than cover my time.

1635  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 28, 2017, 10:18:48 AM

Ok thanks guys. I may be making a big mistake but I think as I am too worried about moving them about (which I have actually done in the past) I will not bother. I will keep the paper wallets safe and secure and just stay how I am. Some may say I am crazy but some wallets hold more than others and if anything should happen I would be more than upset/ pissed off. I'd probably go on some sort of rampage.

Maybe I'll just keep doing what I am doing and miss the boat this time.

Thanks for the advice but I am not as technical as most here. (More than the average person but not more than some regulars here)
ECB has hit the nail on the head. It really isn't that difficult and the rewards are quite worth it, particularly since there are going to be quite a few more airdrops in the future.
There is another byteball airdrop scheduled for the 9th July and more on every full moon for the next 6 to 7 months! That equates to a substantial amount of BTC in anyone's book!
Are you located in the South of the UK? If you need help I might be able to help you out as I am situated on the South coast. Not trying to scam anyone btw just trying to help.

1636  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 19, 2017, 03:29:02 PM
48 nodes is already huge for XMR market. And the guy you mentioned has been working very hard to promote it. Its just a matter of time before the Chinese will see XMR project and will pump the price really hard. Just for now, we will have to wait and see what the future will bring us.
I sure hope this brings a bit of a boost. Monero seems to have hit a plateau and is struggling to keep up to 50$.

Patience is a virtue.  Two years ago it was way under 50c.  In 2016 it went up in value over 2500%.

Monero is a top tier, respected and useful currency.  Smart money knows it and most here just hodl it happily.  A couple of years ago $50 prices were the moon.

Now it's 'meh'?
1637  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 17, 2017, 11:57:15 AM
A small fire and it will light up to daa moooon.

How do you know, are you a clairvoyant? Why always 99% thinking that all cryptos are "going to daa moooon"?  Cheesy

Seriously, if a price of 1 XMR today will go at 20$, and will remain for some time, what you gonna do?

Buy the dip.
1638  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 16, 2017, 05:31:50 PM
At this point in time, Monero is very undervalued, for a mix and a large commission, the price should be ten times higher.

There is no logic behind this quote

Logic does not work here. There is a steady growth that goes the steps of the track level will be coming soon.

But... IIRC just within your last two posts you posted a link to a chart that said XMR/USD was 'looking awfull' [sic]

1639  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 08, 2017, 05:25:57 PM
Ooh an old timer's thread!

I started out in crypto in May of 2013 mining LTC. After scrypt ASICs came out I started looking for somewhere else to go and ran across this article. It's an oldie but a goody:

http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=a_massive_investigation_of_instamines_and_fastmines_for_the_top_alt_coins

It was important to me to find a fairly launched coin with a future and monero fit the bill. Been mining XMR since June 2014. I also sold my LTC for XMR. I made the mistake of going on vacation late last August with a monero sell order that I didn't think could possibly get filled. Of course it did so I lost a bit of my stash for much cheaper than I should have. I don't leave coins on the exchange anymore, but more recently I've been mining more profitable coins so I can dump them and buy monero. I've also got a few friends doing the same thing and have evangelizing a bit more. With the GUI and RingCT I feel like XMR is near-ready for prime time.

I've been reading the monero threads everyday for years. Feel like I know most of you. I was here when Fluffy Pony was just a mortal. When TacoTime was a person and not a fast food chain. When TrueCryptonaire seemed reasonable. I even googled "Barolo" to see what all the fuss was about.

This is a new handle because I forgot my old password and accidentally banned myself trying to get in today, but even with my old handle I only ever posted 2 or 3 times. I'm sure there are more like me that don't say much or anything at all.

Cashed in all my LTC for XMR (or MRO as I think it started off) it started off 'expensive' in 2014 compared to the lows of 2015, so I just averaged down by buying the hell out of it at the 25c to 50c level.

Even paid my son a few hundred in one of his wage packets instead of a couple of day's pay when he said he wanted to buy some.

I had to call him up last week and ask him round for an intensive course in handling his own wallet and how to cash out via BTC and Stamp etc since it has become a fairly decent stash of cash for him. It was just parked on MyMonero, which I didn't want to be responsible for any more, or decide for him whether to cash in.  Like a boss he said: 'No - I want to hodl it'

When I look back at the sub 50c Monero he got then, it makes me smile.  He had forgotten about them, he was totally bowled over.

It's been quite a ride. Shame about losing so many in my boating accident of course, but I still have a few.

1640  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 03, 2017, 07:24:23 PM
Ugh, had a run-in with a car that ran a red light. The bike I bought with my BTC profits is most probably a total loss. I'm reasonably fine physically tho, and of course the woman who ran the red ligth will have to pay for all damages. If it is a total loss, I am undecided on whether to get a Panigale 959 next or a Multistrada Pike's Peak.

Glad it's the machine and not you.
