1641  Other / Off-topic / Re: Totally Off-Topic! on: November 23, 2011, 12:10:46 AM
This thread is totally off-topic. Therefore, practically anything goes but, please, no mega-posts--they suck! In fact, it's possible that every post will be related to the OP because I'm requesting off-topic posts.

There's only one caveat: ABSOLUTELY NO ON-TOPIC POSTING!!!

While we're on the topic of posting only off-topic and not doing any megaposts, I have a bit to say about that. The people I know of who post off-topic generally are just doing it because they have got lost in a rabbit hole. The thing about the rabbit hole is that it may or may not be the rabbit hold that Alice went down to get into Wonderland. No, wait, did Alice use a rabbit hole to get into Wonderland? Perhaps it was Dorothy who used a rabbit hole to get into Oz. No, she used a house propelled by a tornado over the rainbow. Was there a rainbow? She sang about going somewhere over the rainbow but I don't recall seeing an actual rainbow in the movie. Then again, the movie is not the book, and the book was written before the movie, so obviously the book is the definitive work. Has anyone actually read the original by Frank L Baum? I have, but it was a long long time ago and I can't remember whether there was any talk of rainbows in it at all. Have you watched the movie with the sound off and Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' playing as an alternative soundtrack? It's pretty cool. You just start queue up the CD and push play when the lion roars. What do you think of roaring lions? Lions who roar are better than lions who yelp or whine, aren't they? The person next to me just said Holland. That makes me think of dikes. Why do you think dike became the derogatory term for homosexual women. It's kinda weird to me. I don't really get it is what I'm saying. What is the age group for most people who join this club? What am I talking about? I'm in a sales office right now so I might just type what I hear sometimes because I'm trying to make this post as epic as possible. Why? well, I think that's probably pretty obvious. Why would I not want to totally break the rules set by Gage? It is pretty fun to break rules that are arbitrarily set and breaking them does no harm to anyone. Don't you think so? Internet cafe. That's what someone here just said. Isn't it interesting how many internet cafes don't have any coffee in them at all? I think it's funny anyway. Not LOL funny of course, but maybe worthy of a little smirk. Well, maybe not, but hey what do you think about why do you think about how you think about what you think about? This probably has actually gone off topic so I'm not sure I achieved my desired aim of both posting on-topic and posting a mega-post. But then again, perhaps I've just come back on topic now? It's hard to say. How do you know whether or not you are on topic when what the topic is happens to be being off topic? I don't know. From this post, you'd think I have absolutely nothing better to do than type up a ridiculous post but actually I'm procrastinating doing the actual useful things I have on my list. But doesn't any post I make on the bitcoin forums count as promotional work since my signature includes links to my website? I don't know if I can justify a post of this length though. Wouldn't it be funny if my computer shut down or had some glitch or whatever and this entire post was lost? No. And I would not try to replicate it. Well, I don't think I would. How can I actually know what I would or would not do until the circumstance actually arises. I wonder what I would do if in a life threatening situation? I like to think of myself as a pacifist, so therefore I'd like to hope that I would run to get out of the situation, but what if running wasn't an option? Would I kill in self-defense? Is it actually necessary to kill in self-defense? Surely most of the time you can just maim or injure or otherwise incapacitate. If I knew how to just render the attacker unconcious, that is exactly what I would do. I think I might have written enough. Mr Gage will have to let me know whether this is classed as a megapost. If so, I've succeeded. If not, well, at least I've hopefully wasted a bit of some other people's time now rather than just my own. Now, go spend bitcoins! Wink

Proof ESP is a dumb idea.
1642  Economy / Speculation / Re: It's quiet... *too* quiet! on: November 23, 2011, 12:03:12 AM
wait

Just a few thousand more BTC depth from 2.15 - 2.30 to go..

I see on the Gox Depth Table, a 10K bid at $2.10 and an 8K bid at $2.15.

Do these prices look to be the new lows for a while?

SJ

shhhh

btw - on the GOX depth table, there are more bids than coins in existence, or that will ever be in existence (total = 27 million bid)

1644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: suspicious activity...new security measures on WBX on: November 22, 2011, 07:56:51 PM
it's good in a way that volumes are picking up, means I make up much less of the bids/offers, but also means there are people ahead of me in the queue

also, having liquidity allows people to come in with larger bids/offers and narrower spreads
1645  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can someone explain the price difference between Tradehill and MtGox? on: November 22, 2011, 12:49:02 AM
yes, pretty slow.  I'm just sitting and waiting - watching the exchange rates etc (auto-updates on my trading calculator anyway).  I could close out some of my position, but being patient.

what's to stop anyone adding the magic line to their conf file?  Presumably you have to ask sweetly for the information.

I am continually fascinated by people who expect real world protections on an unregulated "wild west" trading system.
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, I'd just like to provide one anecdote for comparison. I did a bank transfer today. My bank sucks (actually all the banks here in Ireland suck) so I had to go to the bank physically. This bank has over 100 years history. The document I was given to sign says this:

Quote from: bank
Note: It may take up to 5 business days for a Euro payment to be credited to the beneficiary account in the Europan Union, as defined in the terms and conditions, and 7 working days for all other payments to arrive at the Beneficiary bank.

Maybe TH just needs better documentation.

Yes, they could do better, but would people read a larger terms and conditions?  When I send international transfers there is normally an A4 of small print to read, and it takes a while for funds to turn up (normally I work on a week to allow for weekends and timezones).  I can at least do internet banking for my accounts here and in Australia.

I've only been caught on AML once previously because I was making regular funding payments to my business in Australia and we needed to move a largish block of money to pay for something following a capital raising - it was easy to get through because one of my directors knew the head of corporate banking and a five minute phone call to say "hi" sorted it out.  But even then, it would take days (still does).
1648  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: suspicious activity...new security measures on WBX on: November 21, 2011, 08:21:39 PM
Probably the unusual activity is deposit BTC, withdraw dollars because they used to have one of the best arbitrage margins in the bitcoin market.  Also, why trading on an exchange with anonymity to your deposit holder is an issue is part of choice - you can still do transactions elsewhere.

For interest, I'm doing a FSL application at the moment for trading derivatives and advice, and was going to add a clause in the proofs to allow bitcoin to see what the ASIC analysts say.  Last one I did was a few years ago, and they are not too hard.

WTF? Sodium reacts violently enough with *water* - and you're putting it in hydrochloric acid?Huh?

Sounds like a recipe for an instant explosion as the copious hydrogen production is ignited by the violently 'burning' sodium. Calcium eventually causes a few bubbles of hydrogen from pure water... bung calcium in dilute hydrochloric acid and you get a violent reaction. Only a lunatic would put *sodium* in HCl.

Sure you're not talking about concentrated sulphuric acid? Even so...

Could be, high school chemistry was a long time ago, but we had an interesting teacher with some good stories.   Playing with benzene and toluene while avoiding making the tri-nitro version was fun.
1650  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tradehill does not execute my bitcoin withdraw order on: November 21, 2011, 07:13:53 PM
I am continually fascinated by people who expect real world protections on an unregulated "wild west" trading system.  There is essentially no recourse on anything people do with bitcoin and you are trusting that you can even get your coins back after willingly sending them to some exchange or other.

I recommend you stick with equities or something more appropriate where there is 8/5 trading and three days clearance times.  And it still might be worth nothing by the time you get to trade.
1651  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can someone explain the price difference between Tradehill and MtGox? on: November 21, 2011, 03:28:35 AM

A different game is to simply use the drop-outs on Tradhill to make a few bucks.  These drop-outs popped back up this weekend.  It's like someone throwing $20.00 bills in front of your feet and running off.  I finally couldn't stand it any more and picked one up earlier today (breaking my own rule of never selling a BTC.)  Worked, but it's hardly worth the effort and here again, I don't think that more than a few people can play.

They are not always drop outs, sometimes there are just stupid prices paid.  My best price "this" month is $10/coin.  I missed on the $15.
1652  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tradehill does not execute my bitcoin withdraw order on: November 21, 2011, 03:23:20 AM
gee, you're grumpy - try some of the other exchanges and see how much help you get.  Out of the three exchanges I've had issues, TH was the only one that actually fixed stuff.

yes, they could have put the manual approval required somewhere, but I have seen it elsewhere, and it's not normally a huge issue.

As for coding, they actually might be running a business, not coding a web page - I know what I'd prefer to spend time and money on.  Not every one who does BTC is a programming geek.
1653  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tradehill does not execute my bitcoin withdraw order on: November 20, 2011, 09:19:55 PM
Get in touch with them to see if it is a problem.  They are pretty good at sorting things out.

Larger withdraws are not automatic and need clearance - might be a pain in the arse, but its there to help stop your account getting cleaned out if compromised (although it still might get emptied).
1654  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can someone explain the price difference between Tradehill and MtGox? on: November 20, 2011, 09:09:45 PM
Agree, there are different sets of traders.  Some trade exclusively on Gox, others pick and choose.  One of the differences/difficulties is the time for transfers, so having the right funds in the right place at the right time takes some effort, as well as tracking and bothering with the different exchanges.  It's a shame Aqoin dropped off, because it was a nice addition to the set of places to make a few dollars (or euros).

I've been trading my average price down for a couple of months and it's going nicely, some as speculative, some as simple arbitrage.
1655  Economy / Speculation / Re: I like the manipulator, I had him all wrong, he is robbing you fools on: November 19, 2011, 06:18:37 AM
observation - without the "manipulator, Edward would have nothing to post about.
1656  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: SCAM ALERT: spendbitcoins.com / Jeremy West on: November 19, 2011, 06:16:38 AM
I have not dealt with Jeremy directly, but the OP (Inaba) is someone who has demonstrated that I would never want to do business with (and that;'\\s not just he vodka talking).  I I was on e-bay (or equivalent), he would be the one black-listed.
1657  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a light-weight bitcoin client for IOS ? on: November 16, 2011, 07:41:23 PM
hmmm, total centralised control to the detriment of users, software changed without warning, cult like reverence from fan base.  Is that Apple or Solidcoin?  depends if it's over priced or not.
1658  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Forum members you'd better ignore... on: November 16, 2011, 03:33:30 AM
What's a troll?

It's a term I use to annoy my daughter - she hates when I use internet speak.

anyway - some of the names in the OP don't troll all the time
1659  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling Bitcoins at a high exchange rate on: November 15, 2011, 10:43:27 PM
get it right colombo, I'm 13

If you make a Colombo reference, I don't think you are 13.  He's got his glass eye on you.
1660  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Worlds Worst, most stupid video card??? on: November 15, 2011, 10:35:01 PM
So, air is cheap, water moderate, well I suppose I'd better go for SODIUM as an expensive option.

A great metal, liquid at modest temperatures, electromagnetic pumping, terrific thermal conductivity, used on some of the best nuclear reactors (low pressure so doesn't go bang like TMI, Chernobal or Fukushima).

I double-dog-dare you to do a sodium/water combo Cheesy

I double lol - I've seen what metallic calcium and potassium do in water, and sodium is great at keeping large bottles of acid "dry" (leave a lump in the bottom of HCL and it reacts with any stray H20 - although I hear industrial steam cleaning the reused bottles goes a bit wrong if there are left-over pieces).  That's a long time ago now.

Still, sodium/water - I wonder if I could get the temperatures over 200C?  Might need a fan.
