Bitcoinbitcoin113 has a new avatar.

Why is that?

Not sure, but I've read that some people use images of their idols as avatars.

Hell yeah!

Well, there was someone who purchased a jet from the USAF because it had lost a blade.  He got it as junk/scrap, but noticed the blade count was n/3 and removed two more to rebalance it.  I'd have to check the source, but he annoyed the neighbours.  When the G-men turned up wanting to know where he got the restricted high tech device he showed them the official receipt and told them to f-off.  (still hunting for the reference, but did find the Australian who holds the water speed record got his jet for $69)

It's a reasonably priced leg, but only going one-way might add a little.

Travelling to Wellington limits the choice of a airlines (Qantas/AirNZ/PacificBlue).  PacificBlue is part of Virgin have trans-tasman flights, so do they have an option to use some points for that piece too?  A sale flight might cost $149, but a normal fare $449.  They need to be choosy.

I think he can find one for about 250gbp before tax. Somewhere in that range.

!! GBP250 is a lot.  I did a quick search and the 149 price would be less than GBP100.  I just threw it into http://www.virginaustralia.com/nz/en/

It's a shame my brother changed jobs as I think he was working in the same town and would have been very good at getting answers (but he now elsewhere in Australia).

I've been very supportive of this exchange since it's inception and done a lot of trading, but was in the process of extracting my funds for legal fees on a case I'm taking and have around AUD3000 in limbo land.  That's enough for me to jump on a plane and fly to Aus and accept a cheque or an atm withdrawal in person.

Not good enough Andre.

What about non-newbie Starfish?  (otherwise I think it's an awesome idea)

An update.  Running it at 750/240 it has been stable for almost 72 hours now.  Still not sure if it is EM or just maybe 1 of 3 VRMs are blown.  Also no sure if it can do more than 750.  I want to run it like this until either it crashes again or it lasts a week.

Don't turn it off.  The first 5970 I had fail was an XFX black edition (fancy name, still just a bit of kit).  It took four months to die (i.e. not turn on when cool), but even when very stuffed, it would drive a screen.  Recycled the fan and heatinks Smiley

As for the RMA - I paid about 80% of new price, 2nd hand rates were still 80% of new up until a few months ago (now about 50%), and they could have denied the return because I wasn't the registered purchaser.  Something better than nothing.

Not sure why you are binging up some of those other arguments, I must have unintentionally made you very angry.
Ah, the "u mad?....he mad" argument. Unfortunately, I can't counter arguments that don't exist in rational discourse so you win that one.

Hmmm, I could ask if you're crazy instead, because your first five posts to this forum are along the lines of "I know better than you and your rules suck".  I now understand you were not targeting my reply in particular.  Plus there are enough nuts here.

However, I will be looking out for your posts because they are amusing.  You should also feel honoured because you even managed to get a "RandyFolds" response.  (Starfish waves at Randy)  At some stage someone will come along and be mean on purpose.  Enjoy the forum  Smiley

How is it out of place? Because the system already exists and can't be changed? That's false. Because the system has been doing it for so long and you don't want to change now? False due to sunk cost fallacy. Because he isn't an "established user"? False. Arguments should be judged on their rationality, not the tenure of the person stating them.

I rail against the fraternity pledge hazing mindset everywhere I see it. The idea that he shouldn't care anymore because the hazing period is over or nearly over is ridiculous. Am I tilting at windmills? Perhaps.

Nice reference to Quixotie, although it was such a small part of the book.  Tilting at windmills because they look like dangerous giants.

The system can, of course, be changed.  The comment is out of place because it has been discussed previously and often.  A new user is as entitled as any other to request change, and if you are going to do that, you might put a request to the people that run the forum, rather than broadcasting.

Not sure why you are binging up some of those other arguments, I must have unintentionally made you very angry.

I'm interested in Bitcoin, but I'm lucky enough to have several real life friends who are as well. I also found Reddit, which has served to keep me pretty up to date on news - the only times I've ended up over here are when it's linked on Reddit. Curiosity finally got the better of me Smiley

I think I'll try my hand at collecting some of the bounties offered. I already have an online business that accepts Bitcoin, though not via an integrated means.  Maybe I'll go install osCommerce and set up a secondary storefront.

Now that's interesting (although off topic) - what's the online business that takes bitcoin?
1191  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Make money out of bitcoins on: March 07, 2012, 08:26:33 PM
Bitcoin - get not very rich slowly.

There is no particular way to make money out of this.
Mining is marginal and to get a decent income takes a lot of expenditure and long payback.
Creating a pool is discussed above, and taking fees from miners who don't like paying fees is hard work.
Trading - win some, lose some.
Speculate - win some, lose lots (I'm more a pessimist for spec trading).

Of course, you could buy a whole lot of coins at a high price and watch the value drop 90%.

I see the rule was in place. I suppose it is most likely I simply didn't notice it.

As for it taking half a year --- did it occur to you that posting on a niche forum doesn't rank #1 on my priority list?

True, many people come and go.  They register, get interested and drop off.  However, if you consider this a low priority niche, your request doesn't appear to reconcile.  Aside from that, your post count is already above the minimum, and then there's just the pesky time requirement.  I look forward to seeing your name around the board.

Off to read the latest "why bitcoin will fail" thread.
1193  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Forum change request on: March 07, 2012, 08:10:05 PM
Reading this two ways, I ended up preferring the second version by laughing out loud.  Why, because if it's taken you six months (more, you registered in July) to work out the forum rules, then you should not be allowed to post on to the main forum.
Way to encourage those newbies. What other rules would you like to add to the forum to help keep people out? We definitely need to make sure bitcoin doesn't grow at all.
I registered in June, the rules were in place then.  I did a lot of reading and some fairly pointless initial posts.  The forum was much more aggressive then, and the mods and users have helped clean it up.  There are still some interesting shit fights that occur from time to time.  Also, don't confuse the use or growth of bitcoin with this single forum.

The way I first read the post was that  most people new to the forum have very little trouble working out what the requirements are, and https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7269.0 is not hard to find being the major stickied thread in the top topic.  There has been sufficient posting about the newbie restriction to make it clear what is going on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0

I would also observe that many of the newbie threads are read by established users and those users also post to those threads.

As a second post, however, demanding a change to an established forum when there are so many threads, posts and established users is out of place.

1195  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I think one of my GPUs has the the dreaded electromigration. on: March 07, 2012, 06:28:03 PM

The 5970 is dual GPU, and so is the 6990. If you got a single GPU card in return for a dual GPU card, then you got gyped.

Yes.  But I neither the 5970's or 6990's had much availability, and from that particular supplier, I don't think they could get any (or didn't want to spend over $1000 to find a replacement).

The 5970 was second hand, and not a bad price and having the purchase documentation was a bonus (allowing the RMA in the first place).  I don't particularly like the 6970 (noisy and only single gpu).
1196  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I think one of my GPUs has the the dreaded electromigration. on: March 07, 2012, 05:43:49 PM
My cards were running 24/7 long before mining bitcoin, but not usually with over-clocks, and that helped keep temperatures sensible.  The only RMA I've managed with a 5970 got me a 6970 in return - better than nothing.

I hope you mean 6990.

No.  It's just a single GPU card.

As for the thermal paste suggestions, I've never had a problem on that front.  I also have a friend in Germany who knows some info on the electro-migration issue, and for the volume of material that needs shifting, even for micro circuitry, his view was it is unlikely (he is another long time 24/7 gpu user).
1197  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: ATI Radeon 9800 PRO on: March 07, 2012, 08:41:49 AM
ATi Radeon 9800 != GeForce 9800GT(X(+))

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_R300
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

At least it's an AGP card and not something even older.  There were a couple of double precision HD38xx cards with AGP interface that used to run the milyway-at-home project, but with the requirement for OpenCL I'm not sure even they would work based on the info in the mining comparison.

1198  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I think one of my GPUs has the the dreaded electromigration. on: March 07, 2012, 08:32:57 AM
One of my 5970s has a similar problem.  It wont mine at 725mhz/150mhz mem/1.05v without crashing, but it runs fine at 690mhz/150mhz mem/0.95v.  I always assumed it was a fried VRM because the GPU temps are fine.

Hmm it could be a bad VRM.  I can't check VRM temps because it is in Linux.  I may drop the card in my Windows workstation to see what VRM is reading.  If one of 3 VRMs is missing in GPU-Z that is a good (well bad but clear) sign.

VRM problem is more likely.  I had had several types of failures on 5970's, and if it starts more easily when cool (as opposed to when hot), runs hot with no apparent load, or freezes when load applied (especially this one) that is one of the possible symptoms of vrm fail.  I'm assuming you haven't thrown it into a primary slot to look for ram failure (artefacts).

My cards were running 24/7 long before mining bitcoin, but not usually with over-clocks, and that helped keep temperatures sensible.  The only RMA I've managed with a 5970 got me a 6970 in return - better than nothing.

Better grammar would be to split the complex three line sentence into several smaller ones.  Spelling should not be give precedence over syntax and style, but a more equal footing.  Remember to write appropriately for your audience.

beer doesn't need correct spelling
